"Société le Nickel exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, with controls that are extremely complex at all scales, including lithology, oxydo-reduction conditions, mineralogy and multivariate geochemistry. In this context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: support effect – the exploration data set can only warrant the estimation of large panels of 20 × 20 × 3 m3 that are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5 × 5 × 3 m3 information effect – the selection at the production stage uses estimates based on information that is much denser than that available for mine planning.The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for the estimation (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at the mining stage (ie the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria not only involve Ni grades, but also other elements such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO and SiO2.The solution presented in this paper is to construct an SMU multivariate simulation in the saprolitic horizon and construct an efficient post-processing aimed at producing multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model, which had its validity tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process that happens at the mining stage by offering the ability to simulate a composite value located at random within each block.The paper also presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream (reserve optimisation and mine sequencing) phases of the project. The original version of the paper (see Deraisme, Bertoli and Epinoux, 2014) used an early version of the scenario reduction plug-in (named S2RM) built in Isatis® software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set was based on Ni only. The implementation presented here is for the second generation of S2RM, where measuring the distance between the initial and the reduced set of realisations is based on all study variables. Paper presented at the conference Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume. 18pp., 12 refs. (Originally entitled: Tunnel roof diagnosis using a robotic sensor test bed.) An integral roof diagnosis method is proposed to assist in assessment of risk regarding the stability of an excavation. A Robotic Sensor Test Bed (RSTB) is being developed for the characterisation of roof stability. The sensor test bed consists of a sonic/ultrasonic wave response sensor, a laser surface profiler and a surface temperature sensor. These sensors are mounted on an articulated robot manipulator for performing remote-controlled or fully automated diagnoses. A number of laboratory and field sonic/ultrasonic tests were conducted. A high-energy ultrasonic transducer and an impact device were used to resonate rock slabs. The fracture depths of the slabs were found to be inversely related to the measured resonance frequencies. The agreement between identified and actual dimensions was acceptable. Field tests also showed that loose rock on the surface can be clearly distinguished from solid formation by comparing their wave responses. The robotic laser profiler part of the RSTB was used to measure surface geometry. Different scanning methods are being developed to achieve the fastest and most precise measurements and to provide pertinent information about rock joints and major fractures

The leaching of Tellness (Norway) ilmenite concentrate in hydrochloric acid and mixed aqueous HCl-alcohol solutions at boiling temperatures was investigated. It was found that the alcohols methanol, ethanol and ethylene glycol all substantially increased the leach rate and in the case of methanol and ethanol this was achieved at lower boiling temperatures compared with aqueous HC.

Introduction The domestic copper industry has suffered for some time from declining ore grades; rising costs associated with conventional mining, milling, smelting and refining; tightening environmental restrictions; and shrinking markets due to materials substitution. Ore grade depletion is a major problem. It is illustrated by the decline in average copper yield shown in Fig. 1. From 1979, copper grade has dropped 60%, lowering yields from 1.2% to 0.49% (Sousa, 1981). The US copper industry is taking drastic measures to enhance its competitive posture and to guarantee its future worldwide position. In a sense, this involves a general restructuring of the processing philosophy of US copper producers. Judging from recent trends, this restructuring relates to the application of solution mining techniques to the treatment of copper ores and low grade waste material. Recovering copper by leaching techniques has been practiced for centuries. As early as the mid-16th century, some Hungarian copper mines were recycling copper bearing leach solutions through waste heaps (Nash, 1912). In the US, recovering copper from dilute mine waters has been carried out for more than 100 years. There are, however, certain technical innovations that have elevated the importance of solution mining as a process for copper recovery. These include: • Advances in solvent extract-electrowinning (SX-EW); • Developments in acid and acid ferric cure processes for oxide and mixed oxide sulfide ores; • Improvements in heap and dump construction; and • Advances in in situ leaching technology. Generally, solution mining enjoys certain intrinsic advantages over conventional mining and milling. Compared to conventional milling, the combined capital and operating costs of leaching facilities are normally lower, start-up times are faster, and the leaching operation usually has less impact on the environment. Furthermore, solution mining represents an expedient way of extracting metals from small shallow deposits, and is particularly suited to the treatment of low grade sources. And, in the case of waste dump leaching, there is a tremendous resource in-place that has the mining cost already off the books. This paper updates current US copper solution mining trends. Solution mining systems Schlitt (1980) summarized the characteristics of the principle leach systems in the US. He pointed out that the wide variations in copper deposits make solution mining a more site-specific activity than conventional mining and milling. Heap leaching is usually selected for moderate to high grade ores having a copper mineralization that is amenable to acid leaching (oxides, silicates and certain sulfides). Higher grade ores mined specifically for heap leaching are usually treated to optimize copper extraction, therefore, crushing and some pretreatment (acid curing) may be justified. On the other hand, dump leaching practice usually involves leaching low grade waste rock placed on large dumps as dictated by topography and haulage costs. Mine waste is therefore treated in an uncrushed run-of-mine condition. Finally, in situ leaching is appropriate for either very deep ore bodies or for recovering copper from low grade rock left behind in abandoned pit walls, stopes, and subsidence zones from earlier mining activities. True in-situ solution mining should be defined as the leaching of ore in its original geologic setting. Heap leaching Heap leaching has a long history as a hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery. The methodology of heap leaching established at Rio Tinto in Spain more than 300 years ago is basically the same as that used today. The properties of coal from the Pittsburgh seam, procured from the Bruceton and Federal No. 2 Mines were found to be similar. Strength and stiffness properties of Beehive Mine coal were determined and the material found to be isotropic. Mechanical, index and geologic properties of roof and floor coal measure rocks from Beehive mines were measured and correlated. Analytic formulations are given for coal creep under uniaxial loading, while triaxial creep is being investigated. Results of testing of coal model structures are compared with predictions from using several material models.

"Bauxite has been the almost universal ore of aluminum for about 100 years, with most of the world's reserves oc¬curring in the developing countries. As a result of fiscal and political activities prompted in part by the energy crisis, the formation of the IBA combined with increasing freight and labour costs, these reserves are no longer as competitive or as secure as they once were. This has given fresh impetus to the development of processes for alumina production that utilize raw material other than bauxite. Canada has no bauxite and it is prudent to look for alter¬native raw materials within our own boundaries suitable for one of these processes.Of the three igneous rocks that have been used as a source of alumina, only anorthosite is considered as a potential source in Canada. The Al content would be extracted by a sinter process, which currently requires a raw material with a. minimum of 28% Al2O2. Thus, about 4 tons of anorthosite and 10 to 12 tons of limestone are needed to produce one ton of alumina. There are two petrologically distinct types of anorthosite, one containing the plagioclase andesine-labradorite and around 26% Al2O3, and the other containing upwards of 30% Al2O3, in by¬townite-anorthite; for our purposes they may be con¬sidered as low- and high-alumina anorthosite respectively. The high-alumina anorthosites are somewhat rare; the low-alumina anorthosites are much more common, partic¬ularly in Eastern Canada. Geologically speaking, there is no shortage of anorthosite in Canada. The reserves are im¬mense, although their low Al2O3 content coupled with con¬siderations of location, access and proximity to limestone could be constraints to their development. Fly ash from coal-fired thermal power stations and nepheline syenite can also be used in a sinter process, but neither is likely to be utilized in Canada in the immediate future.The H+ process utilizes an acid attack to leach Al from a raw material with at least 20% Al2O3. One of the best raw materials is kaolinite-bearing clay; not only is it high in Al, but most of it can be extracted. With the possible exception of the Whitemud clay in Saskatchewan, Canada is apparently deficient in clays with sufficient reserves to support an alumina plant utilizing the H+ process. Low-alumina clays with illite and montmorillonite may also prove to be a suitable raw material if advantageously sited with respect to industrial centers. The average shale con¬tains only 15% Al2O33, much of which may be contained in minerals, such as feldspar, not amenable to acid leaching. If shale is used as a source of alumina, it will be because it contains some other valuable commodity, such as oil or uranium, the extraction of which leaves the spent shale upgraded in extractable Al2O3 and lowers the over-all costs to a point where it is economic, Thus, rejects from coal washing plants are most commonly considered as a source of alumina; they are already mined, are available in large and ever increasing amounts, and may contain significant amounts of combustible material which upgrades the Al2O3, content of the resulting ash. Coal rejects from existing and developing coalfields in Alberta and British Columbia are a possible source of raw material, but present data indicate they may contain insufficient Al2O3."

In Australia we usually define "resource" in purely material terms, and rarely relate it to intellect and human capacity. We look at the sheer abundance of our natural resources and are satisfied with the feeling that we don't really need-to rely on using our brains. Certainly our country is fortunate to have the mineral resources it does, but in many ways Australia's worst enemy is its "lucky country" syndrome because we tend to underutilise the great resource we have in the capacities of our people. Raw material exports will undoubtedly continue to contribute a major share of our export revenue, but to harness the riches our country has to offer most effectively we need the vision and planning necessary to bring together our material and human resources. There is a need not only to find, exploit and process our minerals economically, but to turn as much of our mineral wealth as possible into high value products before it leaves the country. In particular we must use our brainpower if we want to maximise economic benefit from and political influence over the strategic minerals which leave our shores. In the past we have been successful in finding and exploiting minerals because our mining industry has been in the forefront of private sector research and development. But if Australia is to have an advantage over other mineral rich countries in insulating itself from the effects of cyclical swings in commodity prices, then the future of the industry must lie even more in technological sophistication rather than depending. on such considerations as size and location of mineral deposits. To survive, our mineral industry must have the foresight and resourcefulness to make its own luck. There are two keys to increased efficiency in exploration and production and in further processing methods: enhancement of the skills of the workforce and continual improvement of R&D.

IN the construction of a set of ordinary mine plans, two axes or coordinates are used; also, two different projections are essential viz., a plan (horizontal projection) and longitudinal section (vertical projection). In isometric projection three axes are employed-one axis vertical and the remaining two inclined to it at angles of 120°, also making an angle of 120° with one another, as shown in Fig. 1. The two inclined axes are used to plot the horizontal projection, while altitudes are plotted on the vertical axis. As an illustration, consider the ease of a simple object, such as a box. To show all the dimensions in the usual manner requires two drawings-a plan and elevation, as in Fig 2.

In response to the continuing problem of noise induced hearing loss NIHL among mine workers, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health NIOSH has conducted numerous noise surveys in coal preparation plants. The research, consisting of worker dose monitoring, task observations, and equipment noise profiling, was completed in eight separate preparation plants. Worker dose monitoring was conducted for three shifts in most cases. Workers experiencing higher than allowable doses were task-observed for one full shift to correlate dose to noise source(s). Finally, noise levels on all floors, and in lunchrooms and control rooms, were characterized. Results indicate that only workers who routinely spend a significant portion of their shift in the plants (away from the control rooms) are susceptible to overexposure from noise. Certain pieces of equipment (screens, centrifuges, sieve bends) are the loudest primary noise sources responsible for the worker noise exposures.

Plant operators in the mineral processing industry have been implementing expert systems for several years now, with the intent to increase production and reduce costs. Most systems have been installed on grinding circuits of some type and have proven that the technology is viable in that application. However, few applications on other processes have been attempted for various reasons, such as lack of reference sites, complexity of the process, lack of suitable measurements and lack of confidence in the technology. The successful application of an expert system on an Alumina Calcining kiln is the first such application in the West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco), and demonstrates how this technology can be successfully applied to other processes. The key objective of an expert system is to optimize the process. To achieve this the process must first be stabilized, followed by optimization of the operating parameters. The steps taken by this expert system to optimize the process are: • Check for abnormal conditions and deal with them using a prioritized set of special actions. • Use a selection of rule blocks to stabilize the process. • Once the process is stable, achieve additional benefits through further optimization of the process. The potential benefits that a user can expect to achieve through installing an expert system can be assessed on the basis that performance will improve from that of an "average operator" to that of the "best operator" performing at his optimum for 24 hours a day, every day. The quantifiable process benefits include: • Increased production • More consistent product quality • Reduced operating costs • Reduced standard deviation of key variables • Consistent plant operation The success of this project was measured in several ways: project implementation, realised economic benefits, and realised non-economic benefits. With a commitment to maintain the system over the long term, the longevity of the system is assured and will become an important part of the Alumina Calcining control strategy at Windalco. This paper discusses the various phases of implementing the ABB Expert Optimizer expert system, what the benefits were and the procedure that is in place to maintain the system to ensure continued long term success.

Africa has a long history of mining and has been one’of the world’s greatest sources of gold and other mineral resources since the days of the Egyptian pharaohs. Mining in Africa has been dominated by South Africa since World War II. However, in the past 10 to 15 years, other African countries are beginning to slowly catch up with South Africa. Ghana, formerly called the “Gold Coast” is located on the West Coast of Africa. Ghana has been involved in mining activities for well over 100 years. Most of the mining activities centered on the mining of gold and were to a large extent limited to underground mining methods. With a more liberal economic policy regarding the exploration and exploitation of Ghana’s mineral resources, mining activities are beginning to evolve to a much larger scale. Drilling and blasting which is an important aspect of this evolution is also changing due to the involvement of foreign-based mining and explosives companies.

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. Extraction of copper from a chalcopyrite concentrate by means of a cupric chloride leach is described. Initially the concentrate is mixed with sulphur in a 9: 1 ratio, and heated to 350-400°C. This converts the chalcopyrite into more readily soluble sulphides, while the iron rejected from the chalcopyrite is transformed to pyrite, which is insoluble in the leach solution employed. A two-stage countercurrent leach using a leach solution of 1 M cupric chloride, 3.5 M sodium chloride, and 1 M hydrochloric acid extracts 98 per cent of the copper, if conducted at 105°C. Iron extraction is relatively low, the mole ratio of iron to copper extracted being 0.17, compared to 1.0 for unreacted chalcopyrite. After dissolution, copper can be recovered by electrolysis, cupric chloride leach solution being regenerated at the anode.Electrolytic power requirement is low, being approximately 0.5 kWh per kg of copper. The sulphur and, most of the iron entering as feed are rejected from the process in the form of pyrite, which remains in the leach residue.

This is one of a series of papers being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the dissemination of information on methods and practices used in the mining and preparation of crushed stone for market requirements. Performance in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour are given whenever that information is available. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods, and are, therefore, included if possible. In addition to the factual description of equipment and methods used, it is desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made. This paper is particularly concerned with the opertions at the Columbia plant of Palmetto Quarries Co. of Columbia, S.C. The plant is about one-half mile east of the Congaree River and adjacent to the southwest corner of the city of Columbia. Rail access is by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and by a spur strack of the Seaboard Airline Railroad.

Results of flotation tests on lead-zinc ore from Broken Hill, N.S.W., confirmed that flotation at pH 9 in the presence of cement gave poorer metallurgical results than flotation at pH 7. Additions of 2 kg/tonne wood raspings [e.g. blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), blue gum (E. saligna), brushbox (Tristania conferta), or turpentine gum (Syncarpia laurifolia)l had little effect at pH 7 but greatly accentuated the deleterious effect of cement at pH 9. This was shown to be caused by e:xtractives (e.g. polyphenols and carbohydrate materials) derived from woods at pH 9. The proportion of extractives, as shown by DV absorbance spectra, increased with increase of pH and was affected by various salts.Additions of 1 kg/tonne Al2(S04)3.16H20 when cement or cement and wood were present showed that metallurgical results obtained by flotation were then very simHar to those in the absence of cement or wood or both. This was ascribed to lower pH values in the presence of aluminium sulphate and possibly to specific chemical effects.Additions of aluminium sulphate appear to offer an economic solution to the problem of treatment of ores contaminated with cemented fill at Broken Hill.

THE object of this paper is to review certain features in connection with the mining of narrow lodes, say up to 20 ft. or so wide. The types of ore-body to which it is intended to refer are those which occur. chiefly as fissure or shear-Iodes-that is, those lodes which are to be found in belts of country which have been subjected to dynamic stresses, resulting in the formation of cracks and fissures, into some of which has been concentrated sufficient metal-bearing material to form ores. Very frequently one of the walls of such a lode is found to be a fault, or plane of differential movement.The first point which comes up for consideration is the shaft and its position. From the information afforded by the prospecting which has been done on a lode relative to the dip, nature of country, &c., the position of the main hauling shaft can be determined. For purposes of general utility the hangingwall is generally chosen, if a vertical shaft, though, on account of freedom from creeps, the foot-wall would be safer. Vertical shafts are preferable to underlie shafts in many ways; but wherethe lode maintains a flat dip the cost of cross-cutting at the various levels becomes very heavy'. A leaching column technique that produces effluent similar in quality to coal mine drainage in the Eastern Interior Basin has been developed. The columns are charged with 1000 grams of crushed overburden and cycled through the leaching process once a week for twelve weeks. Inter-relationships among the important chemical constituents are very similar to those present in actual mine drainage waters, but the overall concentrations of ion are more dilute in the leachates. Multiplying the leachate concentrations by a factor of 4.5 gives values similar to mine waters. Available data suggests that each of the leaching cycles represents about three years of natural weathering, so that the leaching technique can predict the evolution of the mire drainage water over a time span of nearly 40 years. Use of the leaching technique with drill core samples should provide a method of approximating mine drainage quality in advance of mining and should be quite useful in identifying potentially toxic units in the overburden. However, the results should he considered to be a 'worst case' situation because the technique' does not consider the effects of reclamation.

The objective of this research was to develop a mathematical model for gyratory crushers to help in the prediction of energy consumption and to analyze dominant parameters that affect this energy consumption. The development of a gyratory crusher model was achieved in the following three main stages: mathematical representation and coding of the crushing process; building an amperage constant model to derive an energy-scaling formula; and modifying the amperage constant model to represent a full-scale model. Due to their significant influence on feed-size distributions, two blasting parameters, i.e., burden and spacing, were considered. The crusher parameters that affect energy consumption were also identified. A case study of an operating dolomite mine was performed. The results indicated that by changing the burden, spacing and crusher closed-side setting, the overall (blasting and crushing) costs could be reduced by 4.7% to 7.9% annually. It can also be concluded that burden and spacing values have a linear positive relationship with the crusher energy consumption, while closed-side setting values have an inverse linear relationship with the energy consumption.
