This report describes in detail three waterflooding projects and a pressure-maintenance project in Butler and Cowley Counties, Kans., that will be visited on the 1963 annual spring tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the flooding of five oil-producing horizons separately with injection water furnished by two water-treating plants. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, the source and treatment of the injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

This report summarizes the principal activities and results of 15 years of research by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, on methane control in coal mines. This research has investigated fundamental factors regarding the occurrence and movement of methane in coal beds, removal of methane prior to mining, and control of methane during mining. The report includes a bibliography listing the more than 150 publications resulting from the Bureau's methane control program as well as numerous other references, a section on methane recovery and use, a look at the upcoming Bureau of Mines research program, and a brief review of methane drainage practices in other coal-producing countries.

All technical facilities of the Bureau of Mines have been geared for more efficient use and conservation of mining equipment, developing plans for safety, improving the quality of coal through better methods of preparation, studying the problems of coal storage and utilization, and extending the uses of coal5/ for the war and postwar economy. The Bureau is now analyzing all of the coal purchased by the Army and much of that required by the Navy. Work on boiler feed water was doubled over last year to meet the increased demand made by the War Department for protecting vital boiler plants in many new camps and defense plants. Progress has been made in safely storing coal to reduce dangers of spontaneous ignition to a minimum and to preserve coking power. Mixtures of oil and coal to be used as a substitute fuel have been investigated. The Chambers Creek Interceptor Sewer Tunnel project consisted of 2-1/2 miles (4 kilometres) of nominal 9-foot (2.7-metre) O.D. tunnel driven through predominantly glacially overridden soils. Mole-Collucio Construction Company initially elected to drive the entire tunnel with a Lovat TBM. However, this machine could not control the fast raveling ground conditions which developed when the TBM encountered sands overlying very dense, hard glacial till or boulders. As a result, a shield and digger machine was brought in for a 1700-foot (518-metre) long segment. Pumped wells spaced roughly 50 to 125 feet (15 to 38 metres) apart were utilized to dewater about two-thirds of the alignment during construction. Initial support consisted of steel ribs and wood lagging, with a final lining comprised of pre-cast concrete pipe segments grouted in place.

Stability analysis and design of open pit slopes is generally based on an assessment of rock cores and rock exposures on surface or in underground workings. Until recently, core for such assessments has been readily available from exploration drilling programs. In recent years, many exploration programs have reduced the amount of coring and rely more heavily on less expensive rotary or percussion drilling programs where drill cut-tings are sampled for geological evaluation and assay. This paper describes a technique whereby costs of the geotechnical investigation are reduced by using rotary percussion drilling information to assess geotechnical properties of the rock mass. A limited number of core holes are required to establish basic relationships between the mechanical properties of core and the characteristics of the percussion chips. These properties are used as a basis to extrapolate the coring information to encompass the entire area of the rock mass for which percussion drilling information is available.

Since 1910 the Bureau of Mines has given training in the care and use of oxygen breathing apparatus under conditions that may exist during mine fires and after mine explosions. In 1929 the Bureau supplemented this instruction by initiating a course in advanced mine rescue training to prepare mine officials and others to organize men for mine rescue and recovery operations. The course of instruction has been developed and expanded since its inception to keep abreast with new ideas, methods, and equipment. Four miners' circulars were issued to be used in the training course. The first of this series (Miners' Circular 33) deals with mine gases and the various methods of detecting them; the second (Miners' Circular 34) gives instructions for sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres; the third (this circular) describes methods and equipment for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in conducting recovery operations, These circulars have been revised from time to time to keep them up to date.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. When we apply the Au nanoparticle superlattices to the future nanooptical and nanoelectronic devices, the control of not only the particle size but also the interparticle spacing and symmetry of superlattice are the essential problems to be overcome. First, we developed a novel synthetic procedure to precisely control the particle size of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticles in the range from 1.5 to 9.7 nm by the heat-treatment of the small Au nanoparticles in the solid state. Absorption and nonlinear optical properties of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticle superlattices were then elucidated. On the other hand, the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) 2D superlattices of small Au nanoparticles with the interparticle spacings from 1.9 to 3.6 nm were successfully prepared by using newly-synthesized ligand for single electron tunneling devices. Finally, various symmetric superlattices, such as chain (2-fold), quasi-honeycomb (3-fold), square (4-fold), etc., of Au nanoparticles could be produced by making use of interligand interactions or some templates.

A technique was developed for sampling and analyzing airborne dusts in diesel-operated, underground, metal, and nonmetal mines. Samples were taken using personal respirable samplers, operated as area samplers, and an 11-stage cascade impactor. Real-time particle size distribution and concentration measurements were made with a quartz crystal micro-balance cascade impactor and a portable electrical aerosol analyzer. The materials characterized were minerals (by XRD), elements (by XRF), particle size distribution and concentration (gravimetrically), and organic constituents (by HPLC). The method was used to characterize dusts generated at the chute pulling operations on the main haulage level of an underground tungsten mine. Analysis showed that respirable dust concentration ranged from 0.8 to 2.3 mg/m3. It consisted of silica (3-7%); organic constituents from diesel exhaust (0.11-0.31 mg/m3 equivalent airborne concentration); and mineral dust (39-100%). The remainder was diesel exhaust particles. It was concluded that size selective sampling may be used to estimate the ratio of diesel exhaust to nondiesel dusts in the respirable fraction.

"An apparatus and procedure developed in the laboratory of the South-west Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines are capable not only of determining the rate and volume of penetration of solutions into porous materials but also of determining the total volume of voids within particles of porous material, and the density. The method is applicable to ores, bricks, concretes, tiles, filter bottoms, or other porous materials of this nature. As will be made clear in the descriptive matter to follow, the method measures (a) the volume of voids within the porous materials and is not concerned with the interstitial space between the particles.Porous materials usually contain some large voids and also pores that are capillary in nature. To measure the total volume of voids in a sample it is necessary to replace the gas or gases within the voids with some liquid of known density. The large cavities can be filled quite readily, but under ordinary conditions a long time may be required to fill capillary pores. As many porous materials are of a decomposable nature it is necessary to evacuate the porous materials and then submerge them in a liquid of known density to bring about saturation in a short time. Then by the use of a hydrostatic balance the volume of porous material (solid itself) can be determined. To determine the volume of porous material plus voids it is necessary to coat the sample with some material, such s paraffin, which will prevent solution from entering the voids; then, by means of a hydrostatic balance, the volume of porous material plus voids is determined and by subtracting that of the porous material from this the volume of voids is ascertained. The rate of penetration of solutions can be determined either (a) by measuring the change in weight as the sample becomes saturated when immersed ni a liquid of know density, or (b) by measuring the volume of liquid penetrating with a dilatometer. In either instance, due to the fact that some penetration takes place as soon as the sample comes in contact with solution and before a reading can be taken, the sample must be paraffined to determine the total volume of penetration. Since many porous materials partly decompose and disintegrate in liquids the rate and volume of penetration can better be measured by dilatometer than by the change in weight, as saturation takes place when immersed in a liquid. The details of procedure for determining (a) total volume of voids, and (b) rate and volume of penetration are given in this paper."

The U.S. produces about 34 percent of the world's aluminum yet must import 90 percent of the raw materials needed. There are abundant resources of aluminum-bearing minerals such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, shale, and dawsonite, but none of the numerous processes proposed for recovering alumina from them has yet proved economically competitive with the Bayer process using imported bauxite. To help develop an economically viable process for utilizing these resources, the Bureau of Mines is testing on a common basis several proudsing processing techniques. New improvements and approaches developed by industry and the Government are being evaluated on a mall scale to obtain enough information on which to form a judgment regarding the best processes for commercial adoption. A continuous miniplant having a feed rate of about 70 pounds per hour is being operated now to investigate the nitric acid process for recovering alumina from clay. Parts of this plant will be used subsequently for work on other processes for recovering alumina from clay, anorthosite, alunite, and dawsonite. Initial results of the operation and plans for the overall project will be discussed.

The use of a time series variogram as an aid in controlling the quality of a product was pioneered by Pierre M. Gy and is described. The ability to analyse and interpret covariance relationships time series data is possible using the variogram. The concept of stream heterogeneity allows sources of variability in process streams to be identified and isolated. Principally this is distributional heterogeneity that is due to a short range effect of segregation in the process stream related to size or composition distribution of the material on a local scale and due to a long-range change in the size and grade of the material stream. The variogram is simply a tool for representing these sources of variability in a way that is explicit, allowing identification of the source and providing important insights to temporal continuity between samples. This paper describes the chronologically related large-scale variability in an iron ore process stream (%Fe), and illustrates the control and mitigation of variability at various stages within the process using a variogram. Three main sources of variability are identified including the random variability V[0], the process variability V[1], and the variability due to cyclical phenomena V[cyclic], arising from human routine or mechanical defects. These sources of variability can be represented on the control chart that provides the plant superintendent with insights as to the sampling capability of the systems in place. Maintaining levels of variability within customer specification limits requires that production systems be controlled without overcorrecting for the trends in changing quality. This can be done only by representing the limits of control relative to the limits of specification on a control chart. Where the specification limits encroach on the control limits, one or the other, or both, may need to be changed; specification limits that constrain the control limits lead to reactive decision making that is expensive and stressful for plant operators.

The exchange of oxygen between carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide that occurs reversibly on carbon surfaces was studied at temperatures of 750° to 850°C and a pressure of 1 atmosphere. Carbon-14 was used to detect and measure the exchange reaction. The extent of oxygen exchange was a linear function of com- position of the gas mixture, and this relationship was used to evaluate the forward and backward rate constants of the reaction. Equilibrium constants, directly determined for oxygen exchange in this study, agreed well with values in the literature that were derived only by indirect procedures. This result establishes the validity of oxygen exchange in the mechanism of carbon gasification by CO2. Rates of carbon gasification were less than an order of magnitude slower than rates of oxygen exchange. Activation energies for these two processes were 58 and 53 kcal/mole, respectively. The closeness in the activation energies argues against any change in the rate-controlling step over a wide temperature span at atmospheric pressure. The role of CO as a retardant on the CO2-C reaction, and the nature of the carbon-oxygen complex are also discussed in view of the data obtained.

The first International Conference on Ground Control in Mining opened with the topic of pillar design. Two classic papers were presented, one by Bieniwski and the other by Wilson. Unfortunately, the two methods were so radically different from each other that it was nearly impossible to reconcile them. Adding to the confusion were the many other pillar strength formulas (such as the Salamon-Munro, the Holland-Gaddy, and the Obert-Duvall, just to name a few) that were also available. Little wonder that discussions of pillar design in those days often ended with anguished cries of “but which formula is the right one?” The past 25 years have seen substantial progress in the science of coal pillar design. Indeed, one testament to the improvement is the relative scarcity of papers on the topic at recent Conferences. Two factors have been largely responsible for the progress that has been made. The first has been the collection of large data bases of actual case histories of pillar performance in a variety of settings, from shallow room-and-pillar mines through deep cover longwalls. These have made possible the development of empirical design procedures that are closely linked to real world experience. The second important factor is the development of sophisticated computer models that can accurately simulate pillar behavior and roof/pillar/floor interactions. Together, these two lines of research have led to a new understanding of pillar mechanics that identifies three modes of pillar failure: • Sudden, massive collapse, accompanied by airblast, for slender pillars (width/height<4) • Squeezing, or slow, non-violent failure, for most room and pillar applications (4<w/h<10) • Entry failure or bumps for deep cover and longwall applications (w/h>10) It is particularly satisfying that the insights gained from numerical models broadly support those obtained from the empirical studies. While far less controversial than in the past, pillar design problems continue to arise. One recent example is pillar design for highwall mining. NIOSH has just released a software package, called ARMPS-HWM, which employs a number of modern pillar design concepts. Carroll Cave, located in Camden County, in south central Missouri, is one of the most significant caves in Missouri with over 12 miles of mapped passages and over 100 known but unmapped side passages. In the early 1990’s there was a breakdown of the originally excellent landowner/caver relations as the ownership of the only known entrance moved to a new generation and grottos squabbled for control. Subsequently the current owner of the natural cave entrance refused to grant anyone permission to enter.

We encountered several areas of methodologic uncertainty during development of a data collection method for use with vibrating hand tools in metal assembly. A local manufacturer sought our assistance designing a data collection method for evaluating and predicting risks of upper extremity disorders associated with use of vibrating hand tools. Current methods of vibration measurement are described in ISO 5349 [2]. However, the complexity of measuring vibration along with other exposures such as force and posture has limited the number of workplace-based studies of upper extremity disorders that have included direct measurements of vibration. Data from this preliminary study was used to look at two issues: a comparison of vibration values between production and non-production workers when performing the same task, and a comparison of worker ratings of vibration comfort to direct measurement of tool vibration. Methods Eight experienced production workers used each of six metal fastening tools to install fasteners. Vibration was collected by 3 tri-axial accelerometers, one attached to the tool handle following ISO 5349 recommended locations, one attached to the hand dorsum on the 3rd knuckle and one to the thumb side of the wrist. Data sampling rate was 10,000 samples/second. Hand grip and feed forces were obtained using a Novel pressure sensing mat on the palm. Each trial consisted of installing 10 fasteners per tool for each of the 6 tools. The test set-up placed the wrist in the position typically used by the operator during production. Each worker documented subjective comfort and effort ratings on a seven point scale following each series of fastener installations. One series of testing was completed by three non-production workers inexperienced in fastener installation to simulate use of alternative employees for data gathering. Vibration data for each trial were acquired, digitized, and stored using Lab View. The X, Y, & Z axes were used to calculate the vector sum response for each tri-axial accelerometer. The tool data were digitally filtered following ISO recommendations. Calculated data consisted of the mean RMS over the tool’s on- time, the starting and breaking peak impulses, and the peak of the frequency response. Results Production workers (n=8) were right hand dominant males with a mean age of 55 years and normal hand strength (mean right grip = 106 lbs). Non-production workers (n=3) had similar characteristics. We found large and statistically meaningful differences in hand force during tool use between production and non-production workers (mean production workers = 9.77 lbs, mean non-production workers = 43.30 lbs, p = 0.0001). Vibration values obtained from the hand also showed a statistically meaningful difference (mean in production workers = 0.67 Gs, mean in non-production workers = 1.48Gs, p = 0.0014, figure 1). Experienced worker ratings of comfort during tool use demonstrated a moderate correlation with measured vibration (r=0.63). Worker ratings trended with direct recordings from the tool handle as shown in figure 2.

Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

Disc cutters have determined excavation rates of rock tunneling projects for more than 50 years. First developed in 1956 by James S. Robbins, disc cutters (then 279 mm or 11 in. in diameter) were used to bore limestone of 190 MPa (27,500 psi) unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and were loaded with 7.12 t (15,700 lbs) each. Modern cutters have reached up to 508 mm (20 in.) in diameter and are typically loaded with up to 31.7 t (70,000 lb) to economically bore through the hardest of rock up to plus 400 MPa (60,000 psi) UCS. New developments, such as larger cutter diameters, are geared to increasing the bearing capacity and wear life of the cutting structure. This, in turn, increases cutter life, cutter load and cutter penetration. Disc cutters have also been re-designed on a small scale for use in hard-rock utility installations. Additional variables also affect the three factors, including cutter spacing on the cutterhead, cutterhead diameter and cutter materials.

The only reported mineral production in 1977 was small output of alluvial gold, valued at an estimated $54,320.2 In addition, marine shells are gathered for use in lime manufacture, although output was not reported. Proposed development of a bauxite mine and smelter, involving Rennell and Vaghena Islands, was deferred in June. Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Ltd. (CRA), in partnership with Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co. Ltd., and the Solomon Government, with- drew from the project, and Mitsui, which conducted a feasibility study and metallurgical testing of the bauxite, decided to defer further work because of slack demand for aluminum in Japan and difficulties in arranging financing. The Mitsui feasibility studies reportedly indicated that the project could be viable despite technical difficulties and relatively high initial investment costs. The project was to produce 1.5 million tons of bauxite and 600,000 tons of alumina per year from reserves totaling 60 million tans at 45% to 50% A1203.
