The American Petroleum Institute (API) method of predicting pile capacities in sands is reviewed. Factors that influence pile capacity such as soil parameters, pile parameters, loading effects and installation effects are listed. In addition, the simultaneous occurrence of physical phenomena such as grain crushing, pile shaking, stress-redistribution and plugging add to the uncertainty in the prediction model. To better understand the method of prediction, each parameter and the associated uncertainty is revisited. It is evident that these factors are inter­related and sometimes compensating. This discussion also draws attention to the influence that pile installation procedures can have on pile capacities and highlights the need for field experience with various pile installation procedures for designers. In summary, the strength of the method lies in its simplicity and ease of application, but the possible savings generated by an improved method are too substantial to ignore.

In the 1953 National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest, 58 teams from 9 States participated, 14 teams from 6 States in mine rescue and 47 teams from 9 States in first aid. Three of the teams were combination teams in that the same team participated in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are shown in table 1. [ ] The contest was conducted in accordance with the general rules prepared by the Rules Committee and approved by the General Committee of the National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Committee.

Solutions of copper(II) sulphate in acidified aqueous acetonitrile leach copper from copper-lead matte derived from the drossing of lead with sulphur to produce solutions of copper(I) sulphate. The reactivity of the matte constituents towards copper(II) sulphate is Cu2S> PbS > CuS > > Pb. According to the leach conditions, part or ,all of the copper may be leached 'leaving a residue of CuS/PbS, or S/CuS/PbS04, or S/PbS04, to be recycled to the lead smelter. Complete extraction of the copper requires leaching with oxygen which occurs under mild conditions in the presence of acetonitrile and sulphuric acid in water. Copper is selectively recovered as a pure product by electrochemical or thermal disproportionation of copper(I) sulphate solutions. A notional process is proposed.

The negative effects of pyrite and pyrrhotite on thiosulfate gold leaching have been investigated. Possible remedies to reduce some problems are discussed. In a gold bearing pure silicate ore, 92% of gold could be extracted within 3 hours using a solution containing 0.2 mol/L ammonium thiosulfate, 0.9 mol/L ammonia, 30 - 300 ppm copper sulfate and 8.6 ppm dissolved oxygen at pH 10.26. The thiosulfate consumption was 7.1 kg/t under these conditions and could be further reduced to 3.5 kg/t by decreasing the dissolved oxygen to 0.3 ppm. Addition of 16% pyrrhotite or pyrite into the silicate slurry led to a decrease in gold extraction by 2% or 9% respectively and an increase of thiosulfate consumption by 11 kg/t or12.8 kg/t respectively in three hours. Several adjustments, such as increasing copper ion and ammonia concentration and reducing the dissolved oxygen level to 0.3 ppm resulted in increased gold extraction and lower thiosulfate consumption despite the presence of these sulfides.

The multi-gravity separator (MGS) is a novel piece of equipment for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. However, the published literature does not demonstrate its use in the separation of coal fines. Therefore, an attempt was made to study the effects of different process variables on the performance of an MGS for the beneficiation of coal fines. The results obtained from this study revealed that among the parameters studied, drum rotation and feed solids concentration play dominating roles in controlling the yield and ash content of the clean coal. Mathematical modeling equations that correlate the variables studied and the yield and ash contents of the clean coal were developed to predict the performance of an MGS under different operating and design conditions. The entire exercise revealed that the MGS could produce a clean coal with an ash content of 14.67% and a yield of 71.23% from a feed coal having an ash content of 24.61%.

In the green backfilling mining of underground coal mines, gangue in a coal seam is used to replace and fill goafs. However, the gas drainage time changes in the amount of gangue output and order in the extraction sequence of stope blocks, thereby changing the production output. A multi-objective integer programming model was proposed to solve this based on an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The results show a feasible gangue filling rate can be found and the extraction sequence for a long-term planning time is optimized. It increases the planned annual output by 26% and reduces equipment idle time.

"In regular CIL circuits, activated carbon is used for two purposes: avoiding solid/liquid separation after cyanide leaching, and minimizing gold losses in the tails. The carbon distribution and gold profiles in the successive CIL stages are operating variables, not objectives. When the CIL feed contains a preg robbing constituent however, such as native carbon, there will be competition for gold cyanide and this conflicts with minimizing of losses of gold to CIL tails. This paper examines some of the limitations of activated carbon in CIL circuits handling preg robbing Carlin Trend ores.INTRODUCTION Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) has been a great success treating regular gold ores, but the technology is still challenged by preg robbing feedstocks. Little information is available in the gold milling literature on CIL gold extraction from “free” milling gold ores which are preg robbing, or on autoclave discharge (POX’ed) slurries of double refractory ores. Neither feedstock is readily available for experimentation. No literature reference could be found describing deliberate modifications to CIL operations or CIL circuits due to the presence of two types of carbon: “native” and activated. There is some literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of native carbons (Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001). Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices (Tretbar, Arehart & Graves). In this paper, the term “native” carbon indicates (severely) preg robbing carbonaceous materials found in gold ores. There is considerable literature on the gold cyanide adsorption activity of man-made “activated carbons”. Various tests have been devised to measure this activity, commensurate with CIP and CIL practices. These tests are comparative, i.e. results relate to a standard carbon and depend on the test methodology and carbon history. The test results are equilibrium oriented, hence of limited value to CIL circuit designers or plant operators handling preg robbing solids; in CIL circuits most carbons are not loaded to capacity. Information on gold cyanide adsorption and desorption kinetics might be more relevant and that is one subject explored in this paper."

Concern exists about the potential release of metals from the proposed mining operation at Martha Hill to the Ohinemuri River. Speculation on possible impacts is fuelled by the dearth of published data on existing metal levels not only for this river system but for streams throughout the Coromandel. At first sight this lack of data is surprising given the apparent interest in this subject and the fact that future mining activity in this region has been a possibility since at least 1979. That such a situation has arisen is not altogether unexpected given the difficulties faced by various organisations, including the mining industry, in determining metal levels which are generally acknowledged to be low. This paper presents data for a number of stations in the vicinity of the proposed operation; it explains the analytical procedures which were adopted and the rationale for them and relates the information which has been obtained to water quality criteria.

In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 µm) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce® mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir®) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (<4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. This paper discusses the BSF circuit upgrades and compares operational data before and after the upgrade to quantify the improvements in metallurgical performance, structural vibration and mechanism wear life. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the effect of shape and size on strength of geologic materials. The results indicate that the shape effect is caused by the development of confining pressure at the interfaces. The linearization of the obtained formula is of the same form determined by experiments. The size effect is attributed to the fact that the geologic materials contain discontinuities in the form of fractures, bedding planes, and cleats. The maximum reduction factor for the size effect is the one-sixth power of the volume of a cubic test specimen. The results of this work are particularly useful in determining the strength of coal pillars in underground mines.

Consider the case of a mining company with N investment opportunities in projects of different commodities. The problem is: since the company has limitation of capital, equipments, technical staffs, etc, what is the best portfolio of production projects in order to maximize expectations from shareholders? In the no-longer past, the traditional method for the selection of portfolio of projects was the rank-an-cut method. But, this does not properly account for the risk to which the company is exposed. The Markowitz?s Mean-Variance is an advance because the risk of the NPV can be estimated at the level of the company or even division of the corporation. The final product of the Markowitz?s model is the efficient frontier, in which, the manager can clearly understand the maximum return from existing assets and the associated risk level - but this model does not recommend which one is the best portfolio. In this paper we present a model to select the best portfolio considering not only economic indicators, but also requirements of production, constraint in investments, etc. We show that if investors are diversified, managers should select projects with highest return, regardless of risk. However, in practice, if bonuses of managers are tied to their performance, the choice for portfolio with lower return and risk can happen. Numerical application considering typical portfolio of large mining company is used as example.

With widespread acceptance in the market place, many engineers are choosing ground improvement techniques to provide suitable foundation subgrade at sites that would have traditionally required deep foundations. This paper discusses the Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) ground improvement technique and some case histories highlighting the use of this technique for retail development sites. CMC are a sustainable and cost-effective ground improvement technology that transmit load from the foundation to a lower bearing stratum through a composite CMC/soil matrix. The CMC installation is also an attractive option from an environmental perspective because it utilizes reverse flight augers, which displace the soil laterally. This installation technique achieves two goals: it densifies the soil around the CMC, which improves load transfer into the element and avoids spoil and its disposal. Through the introduction of two cases histories, we will present the key benefits of the CMC technology. Each case history will clearly illustrate how a CMC solution can reduce the overall cost of a project when compared to a more traditional type of deep foundations. They will also show how the use of CMCs has benefits that relate to the overall sustainability of the project. While CMCs are an attractive financial and sustainable option, they have also demonstrated that the performance of the system is comparable to that of deep pile foundations. Because CMCs are a relatively new technology many potential users are not aware of its benefits. While we discuss the use of CMCs to support buildings in this paper, CMCs also have been used for a variety of other applications including foundations for tanks, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, and embankments

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. Guidelines for publication of information defining the amount and grade of resource material available in a deposit are well established in Australasia?s JORC Guidelines, Canada?s National Instrument 43-101 and similar documents in South Africa, Peru, Chile and elsewhere (Table 1). These guidelines provide standards to apply regarding the geologic and geostatistical basis for describing the level of confidence to be assumed for an estimate of the amount and grade of material. All of them provide for a strict distinction between material that has been demonstrated to be economically mineable and that which has not, and all of them provide terms such as ?resource? or ?exploration information? to be applied to data regarding material that has not been demonstrated to be economically mineable. It is not until an economic study has been completed that we are allowed to apply the powerful terms ?reserves? and ?ore? to our deposit material. Indeed, the application of these eye-catching labels immediately tells the reader that an economic study has been completed by a qualified person, and that the results of the study were positive. While extensive guidelines are established for describing the level of confidence in published geologic data, and the nature of the economic study that should be accomplished before using the terms ?reserves? or ?ore?, surprisingly little guidance is provided regarding the process to use, and the level of detail to attain, for estimating capital and operating costs for the study. The intent of this paper is to lay the groundwork for development of suitable guidelines for the cost estimating process. While the codes do not provide specific instructions for the cost estimate, they do provide numerous hints and clues to help determine the level of detail expected and the type of procedure to apply in preparing the estimate. This paper will first review the various codes to gain an insight into the thinking of the drafters of the codes regarding their unstated expectations for the cost estimating process. Based on this review, a series of guidelines are proposed for this purpose.

"Although CO2 content indicates the quantity of carbonate in altered basaltic rocks, it does not measure the intensity of carbonate alteration. CO/CaO molar ratios, which correlate with the relative proportions of individual carbonate species, measure the intensity of carbonatization. The Timmins gold area is characterized by pervasive carbonatization, with large parts of the area having CO2/Ca0 ratios greater than 1, representing C02 supersaturation relative to CaO. The mean CO/CaO in the Timmins area is0.67, compared to 0.13 in two unmineralized control areas. Regional arsenic abundance in the gold-bearing area averages 4 ppm, compared to about 0.35 ppm for the non-mineralized areas. The average K20 and Rb abundances are similar in both mineralized and non-mineralized areas (about 0.30% K20 and 7 ppm Rb). Although there appears to have been no wholesale addition of K20 or Rb to the mineralized area from external sources, these alkalies have been redistributed internally, resulting in patterns of local enrichments and depletions which are characteristic of the mineralized region.Local target anomalies associated with known mineralization consist of CO2/Ca0 > 1.5, As > 10 ppm and K2O > 0. 75%. Not all three values are required to be above these thresholds in order to identify local targets. Combinations such as C02/ Ca0 > 1.5 and As < 10 ppm, CO/CaO 1-1.5 and K20 > 0. 75 or K20 > 0. 75 and As > 10 ppm are equally indicative of proximity to gold occurrences. Gold-bearing veins and associated anomalies occur throughout the entire volcanic succession and are not restricted to any particular stratigraphic horizons. The levels and patterns of alteration and occurrences of gold appear to be structurally controlled."

South Deep Gold Mine, owned by Gold Fields Ltd., is situated near Westonaria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and mines the conglomerate bands of the Upper Elsburg reefs (Mondeor Conglomerate Formation) of the Witwatersrand Supergroup and the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) of the Ventersdorp Supergroup. The stoping and underground developments are mechanized. The Upper Elsburg reefs are mined by a variety of mining methods, including mechanized drift and fill, modified drift and bench, longhole stoping, and low-profile mining. Optimal mine design and scheduling for deep-level mechanized mining are complex, and success is highly dependent on detailed, robust, and accurate geological and geostatistical models. Geological structures significantly influence the sedimentological characteristics, distribution, and preservation of the Upper Elsburg reefs and VCR. Accordingly, particular emphasis is placed on the generation of a mine-scale structural model that accommodates the relationships between the older north-trending fault systems (West Rand and Panvlakte faults) and younger east-trending dextral wrench faults. Results from underground mapping, borehole intersections, and highresolution three-dimensional seismic data have been integrated to produce coherent three-dimensional geological models. The Upper Elsburg reefs suboutcrop against the VCR and comprise an easterly diverging clastic wedge, thickening from the suboutcrop position, to approximately 130 m at the mine?s eastern boundary. The Upper Elsburg reefs are characterized by conglomerate and quartzite bands forming multiple, stacked, upward-fining unconformity-bounded couplets. Palaeocurrent directions are dominantly from west-northwest to east-southeast, indicating that the more proximal deposits are preserved close to the suboutcrop, with distal facies to the east. Sedimentological modelling is applied to individual stratigraphic units and caters for facies definition. This is achieved through channel width (CW) kriging and fitting of type sections to borehole and mapping data. Homogenous geological geozones for each stratigraphic unit are thus defined within individual structural blocks on the basis of those sedimentological parameters that have been found to have a positive spatial correlation to gold concentration. These geozones then serve as constraints to the evaluation of the orebody. This contribution presents a summary of the modelling processes that are currently applied in the development of high-confidence, timeously produced geological models that are essential input for mineral resource estimation and mechanized mine planning and scheduling.

The kinetic and practical aspects of the extraction of copper from copper-rich solutions by cementation on iron was investigated. Tests were made on the effect of stirring speed, cupric sulphate concentration, acid concentration, temperature, and ferric sulphate concentration on the reaction rate and excess iron consumption.Most kinetic investigations were conducted under a nitrogen atmosphere to prevent any oxidation of the iron or copper metals. The stirring mechanism for all tests incorporated the use of a rotating impeller above a static disc in the solution. The activation energy for cementation on the steel disc at high stirring speed was 8&#183;6 kcal/mole, indicating a predominant chemical control.Increasing the pH first decreased, then above pH 3, increased the reaction rate. Additions of sodium sulphate also significantly increased the reaction rate.The use of high temperature and high pH under an inert atmosphere has been suggested for increasing the reaction rate and producing a high purity sponge copper product.
