A mineral resource evaluation of the Coyote-Southeast RARE II area (No. 5033) was performed jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1981 for the U.S. Forest Service RARE II program. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a mineral resource inventory of the study area's mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized outcrops. The study area's boundaries encompass 51,700 acres on the east flank of the Sierra Nevada and are within Inyo National Forest southeast of the city of Bishop in east-central California. Cretaceous granite underlies most of the area; the remainder of the rocks are metasedimentary. At the contact of the two, tactites formed at many places where carbonate rocks were present; replacement processes produced local scheelite (calcium tungstate) occurrences.

The leaching and reduction of Cr(VI) in soils contaminated by chromium-containing slag were investigated with column experiments. The results showed that Cr(VI) concentration in leachate decreased from 988 mg L-1 to 407 mg L-1 after 7 days when water was used as leaching agent. However, Cr(VI) in leachate in culture medium treatment was not detected at above periods. In comparison, Cr(VI) concentration in leachate from autoclaved soil remained 398 mg L-1 at the end of experiment. The results indicated that the indigenous microorganism was capable of reducing Cr(VI). The amount of Cr(VI) reduction was 335 mg at the whole experiment period and the reduction rate was 67.09 mg d-1. Carbon supply showed minor effect on Cr(VI) reduction. However the reduction capability of Cr(VI) could be improved by combination of the carbon and the nitrogen. The optimal quantity was 5 g L-1 of yeast extract and 4 g L-1 of glucose.

"INTRODUCTION The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war materiel; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this critical fuel situation, an investiga¬tion was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England. Meta-anthracite, which is a satisfactory fuel for some purposes, had been mined in Massachusetts and Rhode Island many years ago. However, the introduction of freer-burning anthracite and bituminous coal into New England markets resulted in the abandonment of these mines.The coal mined in the vicinity of Portsmouth on Aquidneck Island, Newport County, R. I., had been used successfully for smelting copper ore and for fuel. It is reported that this coal is less graphitic than the material mined at Cranston near Providence, R. I. The coal is meta-anthracite and does not burn freely. However, improved equipment for burning coal has been developed, and if minable reserves of meta-anthracite should be found, methods of burning it probably could be devised.The purpose of this investigation was to determine sources of additional fuel. Since meta-anthracite mined at Portsmouth had been used with some success, an investigation was undertaken to determine the characteristics and continuity of the beds in this area."

The U. S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is developing a hydrologic monitoring system for in situ leaching operations. A working prototype of this system was installed and tested at the Cyprus Casa Grande copper mine. Requirements specific to in situ leaching operations were identified by researchers. The system has been a useful tool for researchers and for mine personnel. Observations of the hydrologic monitoring system, including details of the development process, the design of the system, and the software developed at the Bureau have resulted in new ideas for an enhanced design of the system.

The Florida Department of Transportation, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is studying the feasibility of a 1128 meter (3,700 foot) vehicular tunnel to provide direct access for Port of Miami traffic to/from I-395, I-95, SR-836 (Dolphin Expressway) and Miami International Airport. Both Bored and Immersed Tube tunnels were evaluated and re-evaluated for constructing two, two-lane, 11.9 meter (39-foot) diameter tunnels beneath the Main Shipping Channel lying between Watson Island and the Port of Miami on Dodge Island in Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida, USA. Bedrock Geology of South Florida is predominately very permeable, vuggy limestone with sand seams and occasional voids. Groundwater inflows in deep cut-and-cover excavations, tunnel buoyancy, grouting, maintenance of Port operations and potential/possible environmental impacts to Biscayne Bay were significant issues.

Therefore, the possibility of a mine fife occurring is of particular concern.The first objective is to prevent a fife.The second objective is to design the ventilation system so that a positive fresh air supply can be ensured on each main level regardless of the location of the fife.The third objective is to be able to detect the fife at an early stage and to extinguish it before it can develop into a major fife. Accordingly, at Inco, very extensive measures are taken to prevent fires and to locate, isolate and extinguish them rapidly. To obtain an early warning, it is not sufficient to know that a fife has started, but it is also necessary to know where the fife is burning."

"Gold has been reported from most geological environments in Nova Scotia; however, virtually all production (circa 2,000, 000 troy ounces; circa 60 tonnes) has come from that part of the province to the south of the Glooscap Fault which is underlain by Lower Paleozoic rocks of the Meguma Group. Over fifty concordant sets of quartz-carbonate-arsenopyrite veins have seen production. The host rocks are greenschist-grade equivalents of Cambro-Ordovician flyschoid quartz wackes and shales folded and metamorphosed during the Devonian Acadian Orogeny. The veins were emplaced under conditions of greenschist-grade regional metamorphism and under the same conditions of tectonic stress that later resulted in the regional folds and penetrative, axial-plane slaty cleavage. Rapid filling of hydraulic fractures caused by excess metamorphic pore fluid pressure under Acadian tectonic stress conditions can account for the geometry and paragenesis of these veins.The ultimate source for gold deposits in most greenschist-grade domains remains in doubt, but these domains seem to have had ample gold within them available for mobilization. The work done, to date, on the gold geology of Nova Scotia suggests that regional greenschist metamorphism was an effective mobilizer and a potential concentrator of Au, As, W, Fe and S from these vast reservoirs.In rocks of pre-Acadian age north of the Glooscap Fault, gold occurs as an important accessory in volcanogenic massive sulphide ore, as a minor constituent in other types of basemetal concentrations and in one small concordant group of quartz veins.The post-Acadian metallogenetic domain, which overlies and overprints the two older domains, contains small amounts of gold in many mineralizing environments. Veins, with stibnite and gold, cross-cut crystalline rocks. Disseminated gold is present in basal conglomerates of post-tectonic molasse. Gold has been a by-product of Mississippi Valley-type Pb-Zn-Ba-Sr deposits in Lower Carboniferous sedimentary rocks and has been reported with Pb-Zn-Ba-F in veins which cross-cut Lower Carboniferous and older rocks. Small post-glacial placers have also seen minor production."

Ore breakage characterization plays an essential role in the design and optimization of comminution circuits. Recently, the JKMRC comminution research team has developed a Rotary Breakage Tester (JKRBT). The JKRBT uses a rotor-stator impacting system, in which particles gain a con-trolled kinetic energy and are impacted against the stator, causing particle breakage. The first unit of industrialised JKRBT was installed at the Anglo Research in South Africa in March 2007, and five more JKRBTs are currently being fabricated for some of the world?s major mining companies. In addition to the JKRBT, an improved breakage model has been developed at the JKMRC, which more accurately describes the effect of specific energy, particle size and incremental breakage caused by repetitive impacts. The validation outcomes show that the JKRBT, together with the new breakage model, generate statistically similar breakage parameters to the traditional drop weight tester (DWT), but with significant advantages over its predecessor. The limitations of the DWT, specifically its lack of precision of the energy input, the lengthy time required to run individual tests and the challenges en-countered in testing small particles, have all been overcome by the JKRBT. The recent developments in the JKRBT and the new breakage model offer several prospective applications. These developments have the potential to revolutionize the ore breakage characterization in the years to come.

Oil and gas development in Mississippi during the year 1933 was rather active and a number of important wildcat wells were drilled throughout the state. Mississippi showed an increase in drilling operations during 1933. There were 58 completions from 22 counties during this period, compared with 53 completions in 10 counties during 1932. The Jackson gas field in Hinds and Rankin counties continued to be the most active area with 26 completions, resulting in 17 gas wells, 2 oil wells, and 7 dry holes, compared with 38 gas wells, 1 oil well and 5 dry holes during 1932. A further attempt to extend the producing limits of the Amory gas field resulted in a dry hole. Extensive exploration in south Mississippi has proved the existence of ample source beds and presence of an extensive sandbody near the top of Cockfield. Core tests, supplemented by extensive geophysical work, have been carried on in Jackson, George, Harrison, Pearl River and Stone counties. Exploration will be continued in 1934. The most important deep test drilled in 1933, and the deepest well ever drilled in a southeastern state, was the Eastman Gardner et al., Bank of Seminary No. 1, sec. 26-8N.-15W., Covington County. This well went through about 1300 ft. of Selma chalk, and was abandoned in the Eutaw at 8004 ft. Another interesting operation during the past year was the Foster Creek Oil Corporation's Foster Creek Lumber Co. No. 1, sec. 14-2N.-2W., in the "Eastern Conroe Trend." This test is shut down at 3687 ft. in the Catahoula sandstone and has not encountered any important shows of oil or gas. A total of 107 of the 117 gas wells completed in the Jackson gas field since its discovery in 1930 are still producing, and have a combined open flow of approximately 3,724,896,000 cu. ft. It is reasonable to assume that this area will be rather inactive during 1934 as the maximum daily production during 1933 was 3,476,000 cu. ft. The 10 wells that have gone dead were edge wells. The water level is now between the sub-sea depths of 2190 and 2195 ft. The Gulf Refining Company's Rainey No. 1, sec. 13-5N.-lE., one of the early wells in the field, had gas and water at —2225 ft. This paper presents the results of a study using computer human modeling to examine machine appendage speed. The objective was to determine the impact of roof bolter machine appendage speed on the likelihood of the operator coming in contact with. A contact means two or more objects intersecting or touching each other, e.g., appendage makes contact with the operator?s hand, arm, head or leg. Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem and laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. As an alternative, researchers developed a computer model approach as the primary means to gather data. By simulating an operator?s random behavior and machine?s appendage velocity, researchers can study potential hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects. Analysis information is helpful to the mining industry in terms of making recommendations that reduce the likelihood that roof-bolter operators experience injury due to contact with a moving boom. Data analysis of roof bolter simulations show that the virtual-operator?s response time has little effect on the number of contacts experienced. Based on frequency and cross-tabulation, regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the boom was moving up, were always greater on the palm, and were always greater for the boom part of the machine. Also, regardless of boom speed, the 25th-percentile-sized operators experienced more contacts than did other operator sizes. Furthermore, regardless of boom speed, the 152-cm mine seam experienced more contacts than did other seam heights tested. Results of a survival analytic approach suggest that controlling the boom speed is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Based on the data collected, boom speed greater than 41 cm/s results in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator and should probably be avoided. At speeds less than or equal to 25 cm/s are associated with a more modest relative risk, which represents an acceptable level of risk. Also, at speeds between 25 and 41 cm/s, there could be a particular boom speed in this range at which a significant inflection point in the relative risk estimates occurs. Based on the results, this issue needs to be addressed by future research.

The German experience in dealing with the health hazard of respirable dust in underground mines is reported from first-hand observation in this Bureau of Mines paper. The report covers-- 1. The control of dust by water infusion, water spraying, and ventilation. 2. The sampling devices (tyndalloscope , konimeter , and BAT-I) and methods used to determine the dust concentrations in mines. 3. The systems of classifying hazardous and safe dust levels in mines. 4. The research facilities devoted to theoretical and applied work on mine dust and pneumoconiotic disease. Tile major research projects on dust and disease now underway in West Germany are outlined in an appendix.

This report describes a field-test program to determine the effectiveness of a polymeric wall sealant to reduce the excape of naturally occurring radio-active gas radon from the walls of an underground uranium mine into the ventilation air. A 75-foot-long, dead-end drift with a surface area of about 6,000 ft2 was used as the test site in which the average natural radon flux from the normally dry rock was 16 fCi/cm2-s. The effect on radon emanation of wetting the walls with water to a depth of 3 inches was tested, after which the rock was completely covered with a coating of dry-mix concrete to provide a base for the sealant, an acrylic latex. Sealant was applied in two coats to about 0.25 mm thick. An overall reduction of average radon flux of about 75 pct was achieved. Radon production and other environmental values were measured continuously and automatically by a Bureau of Mines data acquisition system. A commercial microcomputer was programed to convert raw data to engineering units and to perform other useful operations while recording all data on magnetic diskettes. Direct measurements of radon flux from the rock surface were made by a charcoal adsorption technique.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory study to determine what effect use of water-jet-assisted cutting has on frictional-ignition suppression. A single bit with a steel tip, installed on a rotating drum, repeatedly made 22-in-long cuts in a block of Berea sandstone. The drum was operated in an enclosure that contained an explosive methane-air mixture. High-pressure front-mounted water jets operating at 2,000 to 5,000 psig and low-pressure rear-mounted sprays operating at 80 psig were used; the number of ignitions that occurred with each type of spray was compared. The rear-mounted spray was more effective for preventing frictional ignitions than the front-mounted water jet.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a profitability analysis of producing crude oil by waterflooding. Included are the estimated costs of installation of water injection and producing equipment for waterfloods at 2,000 and 4,000 feet and the estimated annual operational expenses for each in west Texas. Using these cost estimates as a base for selecting a range of costs that are indicative of producing crude oil by waterflooding, a simulation technique was derived for determining the profitability under various conditions. Because of the large number of combinations of variables used in this study, a high-speed digital computer was utilized for the calculations. The variables include operational expenses, capitalized costs, price of the oil, annual production, and leasehold acquisition cost. The results obtained from the simulations are presented Fn the appendix. In addition, a nomographical approach was chosen for presentation of the profitability. Five nomographs are presented that can be used for fast estimation of the discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return that might be expected from a prospective or active operation under various sets of assumed conditions.

"The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively pros¬pected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941.The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program.The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.During July 1943, the coal area in the immediate vicinity of Costello Creek was geologically and topographically mapped. by Clyde Wahrhaftig and Jacob Freedman, geologists, U. S. Geological Survey. F. A. Rutledge, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines examined the property July 18 to 22, 1943, and a project of trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling was initiated on August 4, 1943. During the project Clyde Wahrhaftig remained at the Dunkle mine to interprets drill cores and assist the author in planning the explora¬tory program. The project was completed October 7, 1943.Field investigations were under the general direction of R. S. Sanford, acting chief, Alaska Branch, Mining Division. Coal analyses were made by Maurice L. Sharp, coal analyst for the Alaska Railroad.Special mention is made of the cooperation and assistance received from Clyde Wahrhaftig, geologist, U. S. Geological Survey.The many courtesies received from the owner, W. E. Dunkle, and the members of the Army Coal Procurement Section, Alaska. Department, also are acknowledged.The W. E. Dunkle coal mine is in the Broad Pass region on the south slope of the Alaska Range at an altitude of 2,800 feet (fig. 1). It is situated within the Third Judicial Division, headquarters of which is Valdez, Alaska. The area is situated approximately at latitude 63° 15' N. and longitude 149° 30' W. and is connected with the Alaska Railroad at Colorado Station by an 11-mile gravel road that is passable throughout the year. This road is maintained by the Alaska Road Commission. A private telephone line to Colorado Station connects with the telephone and telegraph service of the Alaskan Railroad.The passenger rate from Anchorage, Alaska, to Colorado station is $12.10. Freight rates are $1.60 a hundred pounds for heavy machinery and $2.66 a hundred pounds for first-class freight.The Costello Creek coal basin is in an area of low relief and has been dissected by numerous creeks flowing down the south flank of the Alaska Range. The Dunkle coal mine is on Coal Creek, a small tributary of Camp Creek, 1,000 feet from their junction. About 700 feet below this junction, Camp Creek joins Costello Creek, which in turn empties into Bull River 1/2 mile above the latter's confluence with the West Fork of the Chulitna River. As part of a program for improving, the safety of permissible explosives, the Federal Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation to establish the ability of sodium chloride to reduce the incendivity of permissible explosives to firedamp atmospheres. A motivating influence for this investigation has been the comparatively extensive experience of British and other European investigators, who used sodium chloride as a component of their permitted explosives (1, 5, 6 7).5/ In the United States research and development work of this type has been less extensive, although sodium chloride has been added to permissible explosives as a cooling agent (9) for many years. The results of the first phase of this investigation were presented in a previous paper (8), which established that adding up to 10 percent sodium chloride to permissible explosives reduces the likelihood of ignition of firedamp in the gallery test; however, the results were somewhat inconsistent, and the conclusions were qualified. Accordingly, the investigation was continued with a study of the effect of added sodium chloride as a function of the quantity added and of the particle size of the salt.

Metal market prices rose drastically in 2006, and most broke historical records as shown in Figs. 1-4. This increase has been basically driven by economic growth in Asian countries, especially China. The growth trend is expected to continue for several years. Then, India will follow the same growth trend. Their metal demands keep the price levels high for 20 years or more. One more additional important factor on the metal market prices is hedge funds come into the market. Japan imports all metals for domestic use from overseas. The amounts imported were 1.27 million tons in copper, 0.32 million tons in lead, 0.59 million tons in zinc, 0.20 million tons in nickel, and 1.18 million tons in manganese, respectively in 2006 (Source: http://www.jogmec.go.jp/j_resourse/index.html#03). Though mainly we import the concentrates and our domestic customer smelters take the part of metallurgical leaching, the payment necessary for purchasing the concentrates is estimated about US$ 10 billions in 2006. The payments in 2005 and in 2003 were about a half and a quarter of the 2006, respectively. Japan must have effective counter measures to reduce the future payments.

Noise from vibrating screens is generated in two ways: 1) Noise due to the material being processed and, 2) noise from the screen itself. Non-metallic decks had been shown previously to reduce material noise. The noise reduction and change in screening performance was quantified for six non-metallic decks using dolomite, granite and coal as the materials. The non-metallic decks were from 2 to 7 dBA quieter and from -1 to +10 percent less efficient as compared to a steel wire cloth deck of the same open area. Damping of the sidewalls and isolation of the drive mechanisms had been shown, in a development configuration, to reduce the noise of the screen itself. Tests of four prototype damping treatments gave reductions up to 4.9 dBA and the mechanism isolators gave an additional 2.1 dBA. The treatments were successfully life tested in two ways: 1) Lab tests to a simulated 25,000 hours were conducted on samples of the treatments in a corrosive salt spray to simulate coal plant wash water and, 2) the full size treatments were run on a full size screen for 5,000 hours.
