Although Canadian bentonite is competitive in quality for most uses, it has not been accepted for the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates. In 1962, Canada consumed about 10,000 tons of imported bentonite for this use. By the end of 1965, the planned domestic consumption for this purpose alone will probably be more than 100,000 tons a year, valued at about $3 million. Consequently, a challenge exists for the establishment of a Canadian source of high-quality bentonite for pelletizing. Such a bentonite would also be suitable for the two other major applications -well drilling and foundry use. Brief mention is made of such topics as the identification, 1noperties, occurrences, exploration, applications, technology and laboratory testing of this clay. In particular, the type of bentonite in demand, the geological horizons warranting exploration, and simple preliminary test methods are discussed.

Each mining district presents different problems as to the methods of ore extraction cad underground support, which are dependent upon the type of the ore deposit and the character of the inclosing rock. Mining costs, however, depend largely aeon the efficiency with which the methods employed underground are [applie] as well as upon the selection of the method best adapted to the physical conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present to the operator in other districts a detailed description of ho mining method used ins results obtained in tie exploitation of the bedded magnetite deposits of the Mineville district. AN economist at MIT provided Americans with myth destroying information which should prove effective against the gentlemen of the extreme left. For a number of years they have charged that a small number of companies in each industry has been grabbing more and more of the industry's business. M. A. Adelman has shown that the concentration of business in the hands of big corporations has not shown any sign of growth during the last 50 years. Quite the contrary, there has been a slight decline in this concentration, according to Adelman. There are more small companies per thousand population than ever before. Bearing this out is the fact that International Harvester is now doing 41 pct of the possible market against a former 85 pct; American Can Co. has dropped from 90 pct to 50 pct; American Smelting is down to 31 pct compared with 90 pct; and lastly, U. S. Steel which has plummeted from 65 pct to slightly more than 30 pct of the steel market. Declines of the same proportions have hit big companies in other industries. Price cuts on Detroit's 1953 automobiles indicate that even among the biggest competition is still one of the most important household gods. Big business is still slugging it out for the attention of the American consumer. It's a battle which can only have one result-benefit to the man who buys.

"Certain mining methods (eg. Cut-and-fill) result in the contamination of run-of-mine ore with shotcrete. This shotcrete remains mixed with the ore throughout processing. Experimentation performed by Falconbridge Limited revealed that underground contamination of ore by shotcrete (eg. as little as 1% by weight) has led to ill-effects on the nickel recoveries from the flotation process in the mill. The nickel recoveries of contaminated samples were lower than tests without the shotcrete Contamination.To optimize flotation circuits it is important to know why the contamination has created these effects and also to find a method to abate or remove them. Laboratory testing showed that the age of the shotcrete was a factor in it’s effect on nickel recoveries. Younger aged shotcrete gave nickel recoveries lower than baseline nickel recoveries with no contamination. Older shotcrete gave nickel recoveries similar to the baseline.Literature on other cementitious material contaminations on ore revealed that a possible means of remediating this problem is the use of acid in the flotation. The initial pH in the flotation pulp was designed to be pH 9.2, but with the young shotcrete contamination the pH was in the neighbourhood of 10.5. Acid addition may act as a means of lowering the pH to the optimal operational value. Laboratory test work showed that acid addition brought nickel recoveries closer to the baseline."

Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the technical feasibility of separating anthracite particles from a water-anthracite slurry by atomizing the water and removing the resulting mist in an air current. Products containing 21 percent or less moisture were obtained from slurries made with minus 60-mesh anthracite. Typical recoveries ranged between 67 and 79 percent of the feed when the slurries were atomized in air currents with velocities below 70 ft/min.

"Displacement of rock mass around a tunnel opening varies according to the rock mass properties, insitu stress conditions and applied support in the tunnel. Such displacement is also altered by presence of bands of rock mass that differ in properties. This paper focuses on the deformation behavior of rock mass around tunnel openings at four tunnel sections in Kaligandaki headrace tunnel where extensive instrumentation was done. Based on the actually measured tunnel displacement records and actually measured support pressure; back analysis has been done to estimate rock mass properties and insitu stresses. Numerical analysis has been done to analyze and assess the deformation behavior of the rock mass around the tunnel sections.INTRODUCTION Instrumentation and monitoring of tunnel convergences have significant importance in evaluation of tunnel stability. One of the key aspects of monitored data is that early convergences can be used in estimation of long term convergence. In addition, these data can also be used in evaluation of rock mass parameters and in-situ stresses around the tunnel. Convergence around a tunnel periphery may vary according to rock mass quality. Presence of bands of different rock mass may hinder the displacement pattern in the tunnel. Particularly, displacement characteristic of tunnel periphery in schistose, foliated and deformed rock mass is altered by presence of bands of comparatively stronger rock mass, e.g., quartz veins or presence of shear seams or faults. Similar observations were also recorded in monitored tunnel sections in Kaligandaki headrace tunnel, located in the Nepal Himalayas. Extensive monitoring was done by installing multiple point borehole extensometers (MPBX) at three different locations of the tunnel periphery at four different tunnel sections. In addition, convergence measurements by tape extensometers and installation of pressure cells to record support pressures were also carried out at each of the tunnel sections. Observations showed that the tunnel convergences varied according to rock mass quality, in-situ stress and effective support pressure.Rock mass parameters and stresses have significant role in the extent of tunnel deformation, but these parameters are often unknown or difficult to predict. Back analysis based on actual tunnel displacement records and known support pressure is believed to be an important method in such endeavor. This paper performs back analysis to evaluate rock mass parameters and discusses correlation of rock mass behavior with tunnel deformation and applied support. For this purpose, the rock mass parameters are estimated from actual tunnel displacement records, mapped rock mass quality records and laboratory tested data. Then, numerical modelling is conducted to correlate post peak behavior of the rock mass with actual tunnel displacement."

Safe underground mine backfilling with hydraulic fill requires efficient fill drainage and stable fill retaining walls or bulkheads. If any or both the above two requirements are not satisfied, such a backfilling operation creates unsafe conditions and may lead to backfill retaining wall failures. Mine backfill retaining wall failures are always associated with economic losses, fatalities and interruption to mine production. Mining industry wants to either reduce or eliminate these fill retaining wall failures. The fill retaining wall failures could be effectively avoided through the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining walls and engineered drainage systems through the retaining walls. This paper presents the experience of the author in developing, implementing, and monitoring several hundred fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining walls at a mine in Australia with the highest safety standard. The details on the mine backfill drainage system and fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining wall designs are also presented.

The process of bioleaching marmatite using moderately thermophilic bacteria has been studied in this research by comparing marmatite leaching performance of mesophilic bacteria and moderately thermophilic bacteria and valuating the effect of venting capacity on marmatite leaching performance of moderately thermophilic bacteria and the effect of pulp densities on marmatite leaching performance of moderately thermophilic bacteria. The results show that moderately thermophilic bacteria have more advantages over mesophilic bacteria in bioleaching marmatite. Aeration agitation can improve the transfer of O2 and CO2 in solution and promote the growth of bacteria and therefore, enhance the leaching efficiency. With the increase of pulp density, the total leaching amount of valuable metals increased, however, the extraction efficiency decreased due to many rea-sons, like increasing shear force that results in poorly growth condition for bacteria, etc.

As the Platinum mining industry expands in the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex it is increasingly evident that a major constraint to development is a lack of appropriate infrastructure. Of critical concern are water resources and spatial development / infrastructure. This paper identifies the context for infrastructure development in the Eastern Limb and two solutions that have evolved in the areas of water supply and spatial development. INTRODUCTION In an economics context, infrastructure is considered to be the structural elements of an economy which allow for the production of goods and services, without themselves being part of the production process. Despite the lack of a specific definition, infrastructure has largely become understood as to comprise road and rail transport systems, public transport systems, airports, public educational facilities, water supply and water resources, wastewater management, solid waste treatment and disposal, electric power generation and transmission, telecommunications and hazardous waste management systems. Critically it is important to understand that infrastructure not only comprises these physical elements but also the operating procedures, management practices and developmental policies that facilitate the effective utilization and development of the infrastructure in response to societal demand.

"The Bolivar Dam, located near the Village of Bolivar, Ohio is one of a system of dams designed to provide flood control and water conservation in the Muskingum Watershed. The Bolivar Dam is a “dry dam” that only impounds water during flood events. In order to address problematic seepage, which negatively affects the structural stability of the dam, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) designed a partial-depth and partial-length Seepage Barrier Wall (SBW) through the upstream slope of the dam. For this project, TREVIICOS constructed a 36 in (914 mm) positive SBW by plastic concrete panel wall method and excavated using hydromill and clamshell equipment. The plastic concrete was manufactured on-site, which allowed for enhanced quality control and prompt service. This required the installation, commissioning and operation of a concrete batch plant on-site. This paper presents the challenging aspects of the design, manufacture and placement of the plastic concrete for the SBW in order to meet contract strength and permeability requirements as well as workability requirements necessary for tremie concrete placement.Project General InformationBolivar Dam is located in Northeast Ohio (Fig. 1). It is one of a system of sixteen dam projects designed to provide flood control and water conservation in the Muskingum Basin, which covers 20 percent of the State of Ohio (Fig. 2). Bolivar Dam is on Sandy Creek, a tributary of the Tuscarawas River.The Dam has been constructed, operated and maintained by the USACE, for the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. Its construction was completed in 1937 and it has been in operation for flood control since 1939.Bolivar Dam is a rolled earth fill dam, with a typical embankment section made of a central impervious core flanked upstream and downstream by a pervious outer shell with downstream rock toe. The embankment has a maximum height of 87 ft (26.5 m) and a crest length of 6,300 ft (1,920 m), and is comprised of the main embankment starting on the left abutment of about 1,500 ft (457 m) heading to the Northeast, followed by the terrace embankment of 4,800 ft (1,463 m) heading to the North. An upstream impervious blanket extends up to 500 ft (152 m) upstream of the dam along the majority of its length. The outlet works are to the left of the embankment, and consist of an intake structure with six gates, followed by two outlet conduits that finish in a stilling basin. To the left of the outlet works is the uncontrolled emergency spillway, which was doubled in width to 540 ft (165 m) in 1989, and excavated material utilized for construction of a stability berm against the upstream face of the main embankment. A concrete parapet wall was also installed along the upstream side of the crest during this work. In 1982, a toe drain, downstream filter berm and line of 35 relief wells were installed. The filter berm was recently extended an additional 200 ft (61.0 m) downstream and granular filters were placed over an approximate 2000 linear ft (610 m) reach of the lower terrace slope. Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I thank you for inviting me once again to address your conference. I would first like to welcome you all, especially international delegates and conference speakers. ItÆs a pleasure to be with you all and I hope that you have the time to enjoy the many beautiful sights that the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have to offer.   Holding your conference in Waihi is particularly apt, especially bearing in mind the conference theme û 'Mining in the Community'. There can be few venues in the world that can boast a world class gold deposit of the likes of Martha Hill located right here in the centre of a rural service town. ItÆs a deposit that has a mining history active now in its third century and that to date has yielded some 7.5 million ounces of gold and 50 million ounces of silver. I doubt that when John McCombie and Robert Lee discovered gold at Martha Hill in 1878 that they had any inkling that their endeavours would be the foundation for a mine that would become such an inseparable part of the economic and social fabric of Waihi for the next 130 years.   This is now my fifth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, I especially value such occasions as it allows me to comment on your industryÆs performance over the past year, share my thoughts on matters affecting your industry, and also to give you some feedback from central government.

Introduction Industrial safety professionals recognize that adequate illumination is essential to a safe and productive work environment. The need for effective, lighting in underground coal mines is even greater.1 Designing appropriate lighting systems for these mines is no easy [ ] task because of the unique environment and work procedures encountered in underground coal-mining operations. Miners must depend totally on artificial lighting systems to see. Moreover, the working face is a low-reflectivity and low-contrast environment and is continually advancing or retreating.2 Laboratory mock-ups have been a major part of the process lighting equipment manufacturers must under- go to design an underground machine-mounted lighting system. The mock-ups often have taken considerable time. Furthermore, modifications to a lighting system (using different luminaires with an existing configuration or changing a luminaire's location, orientation, etc.) could require more time with additional mock-ups and laboratory measurements. Understanding the need to improve this situation, the US Bureau of Mines has developed an alternate method for facilitating lighting system mock-ups. A PC-Program (CAP),* with the latest software technology enables users to design, alter, and evaluate under- ground machine-mounted illumination systems. Lux levels and distance are measured as the luminaire is moved incrementally through angular traverses about horizontal and vertical axes. The measurements and angles subsequently are entered into the model. From this input data, three-dimensional isolux or isofootcandle profiles are constructed for luminaires that can be placed at various locations and orientations on a mining machine. As an example, Figure 1 shows a computer display of 21.5 Ix or 2.00 fc profiles for luminaires mounted on a simulated mine-shuttle car. Using this information, the model allows the user to determine the lux level at different locations in space about the shuttle car. How the model calculates illumination During initial development of the CAP model, the isolux profile of the luminaire was determined using the inverse square law (ISL) .3 The method of gathering data comprised recording a single measurement of distance at 21.5 ± 1.21x (2.00 ±11 fc) for angular traverses following 0.09 rad (5 degree) increments. This data was then used to find the illumination in space for any other distance at a given azimuth and elevation using the ISL. Limitations, however, exist with this method.4 The main one is that the ISL assumes a luminaire is a single point source of light, so long as the distance is greater than five times the 1al;gest dimension of the luminous area of the luminaire.5 Also, by using a single measurement to calculate the illumination for a given luminaire in the CAP model a large error could result from an inaccurate measurement.

This report describes exploration for lead-zinc ores at the Madonna mine between 1945 and 1953 by the Utze Lode Co., the Bureau of Mines, and the company with Government financial aid under the Defense Production Act of 1950. The Madonna mine yielded silver, lead, and zinc with a net smelter value of over $5,000.000. from 1882 to 1924. The mine was inactive from 1924 to 1942 when the Utze Lode Co. acquired the property. Possibilities for finding ore in the mine, especially at depth, were considered favorable. The Utze Lode Co. began rehabilitating the Madonna mine in 1945. An exploration program, which consisted of winze sinking and drifting, failed to produce commercial are.

The Bureau of Mines at Morgantown, W. Va., has been investigating, on a pilot plant scale, various methods of gasifying bituminous coal with oxygen and superheated steam to produce synthesis gas, as part of the broader program of finding new uses for coal. Differences in the pressure gasification methods used have depended on differences in the manner in which the pulverized coal is fed to the gasifier. One of the methods of feeding the coal that was investigated was the continuous, integrated coal-water slurry system. Goal and water were first mixed to produce a slurry; then the slurry was pumped through a heated coil. to evaporate the water fraction; the resulting steam was superheated, and some of it was separated so as to adjust the ratio of the residual steam to the coal fraction and make the resulting mixture suitable for partial combustion with oxygen in a pressure gasifier. Both before and during this reported3 developmental work it was necessary to make an extensive literature search into the technology of aqueous slurries in order to establish design criteria for the pilot plant and to correlate results of various phases of the work with that of other investigators, The pilot work coincided with the commercial development of a long-distance pipeline for the transportation of coal as a coal-water slurry, and this fact tended to broaden the scope of the pilot plant work and the extent of the literature search. This bibliography is the compilation of the material that was collected.

The Bureau of Mines investigated nitrous oxide (N20) stability when used as a solvent for organic removal from metal powder surfaces. Both supercritical and subcritical conditions were studied. This investigation was prompted by the occurrence of a violent reaction when supercritical N20 was being used to deoil a metal powder grinding waste sample that contained 20 to 25 wt pct cutting oil. Tests were conducted to determine the cause of the reaction and to define stability limits. Test data showed that the waste's oil fraction reacted violently with N20 acting as an oxidizer; the metal powder acted as a promoter to reduce the ignition temperature. Although the data were scattered, this temperature appeared to reach a minimum at a certain pressure (dependent on vessel and sample size). The minimum ignition temperature for a 0.64-g sample in a 72-cm3 vessel was 360° C at 200 psig. As the sample size increased, the ignition temperature decreased. For example, when the sample size was increased to 10 g, a reaction occurred at 240° C and 600 psig. Because of the variability of ignition temperature with pressure and sample size, safe operating conditions were not established. Overall, this research showed that extreme caution should be exercised when using N20 in an organic or organic-metal system.

So many ceramics look the same, but are they?In the past 20 years, there have been significant changes in the materials available, as well as changes to the supply chain, for ceramics used in wear applications in the hard rock mining industry. The biggest change in supply has been from the Chinese market, with many suppliers promoting their products as æstate of the artÆ. Some of them are state of the art, but are they all? There will be some concluding remarks in this respect.There are still some outstanding new developments coming from the more traditional suppliers and these should not be ignored. However, as an end user, how can one be sure that the product received meets the technical specifications of that material?This paper will address some of the questions on how to differentiate between different materials by giving a technical overview of the current (but not exclusive) range of popular ceramics, plus incorporating how these ceramics are used in process plant products by presenting case studies. The presentation will include technical data coupled with micrographs of various ceramics to illustrate just why they are different.It will also be shown that by careful selection of the wear material, it is possible to gain significant benefit when using superior materials in an ore processing plant. The impact of cost of the products, life, process efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs will be considered using cyclone components as an example.The properties (including the microstructures) of the various ceramics will be compared to the application in order to get some understanding of what is considered good or bad.Misra and Finnie (1982) summarised their paper, æA review of Abrasive Wear of MetalsÆ by saying:à it is difficult to give guidelines for selecting materials for abrasive wear resistance. Each application is a different one, and a design engineer has to take into account various other factors such as impact, fatigue and corrosion which are often coupled with abrasive wear. "Mineral comminution is often a costly process which also requires high level of energy. In the course of the studies carried out by the researchers of the Department of Civil-Environmental Engineering and Architecture at the University of Cagliari, aiming at the optimization of the reduction processes, it has been experimented, among of others, the effects of high-speed water jets on minerals grinding. As far as coal is concerned, some of the solutions initially adopted are presented in this paper, which essentially relied on the water jet power only, with secondary use of mechanical actions, to reach the most modern solutions that envisage the use of mechanical energy, normally used in traditional grinding machines, in synergy with hydraulic energy transferred by water jet.INTRODUCTION Mineral comminution can be rather expensive and demand a high-energy consumption, especially for fine sizes (Austin, 1979). Further interesting perspectives in this area may be offered by comminution means aided by high pressure water jets (Ciccu 2007), whose crushing potential is currently used for several operations such as cutting different materials, rock digging and industrial cleaning. The crushing action of water jets may induce a traction stress in materials where substances of a mineral nature, especially if characterised by permeable porosity, oppose a minor resistance (Griffith, 1920). The first solutions to this purpose essentially relied on the sole energy of water jets, with a secondary use of mechanical actions (Ciccu, 1993). Results were encouraging, despite the high values of specific energy for the low capacity of treatment. However, due to the difficulty in making the techniques mainly based on hydraulic energy practically applicable to solids comminution a solution was experimented, with some interesting results, consisting in the combination of mechanical energy, normally used in traditional grinding devices, with hydraulic energy transferred through water jets, in a synergic relationship (Ciccu, 1998; Tilocca, 2016)."

Keywords: Co3O4, Cobalt Compounds, Morphology, Urea, Homogeneous Precipitation Depending on experimental condition, precipitation from cobalt nitrate and chloride solution in the presence of urea yield dispersed cobalt compounds with different chemical compositions and morphologies. The effects of concentration of cobalt solution and urea, agitation, on precipitation morphology were investigated experimentally. Generally in closed systems the particles are identified as cobalt (II) basic carbonate with needle type shape. In open system, spherical and plate-like precipitations of cobalt (II) basic cyanate are formed. The chemical formula of cobalt compounds was confirmed. They are CoII,III(OH)0.83(CO3)0.49 Ay?0.14 H2O (in tightly-capped reactor: A stands for NO3?, Cl?; y[A]molecular weight < 12.9) and CoII,III(OH)0.83(NCO)XAy?0.14 H2O. (in open reactor A stands for: NO3?, Cl?; 42 x + y[A]molecular weight < 44.82). The main reason was that the primary particles had different chemical compositions for the effects of the different kinds of anions and stoichio-chemical compositions of the primary particles. The effect degree of the anions depended on the co-existing anion radius in the reaction solution. According DTA-TG analysis of the cobalt compounds, the latter particles transform to Co3O4 powders on calcining. The shape of the Co3O4 particle with porous character has inheritance with precipitation. In this paper, it concludes that the particle formed by the principle of nucleation-aggregation in aqueous solution. The process of aggregation has played an important role in formation of particles. During calcination, the aggregation would be destroyed partly.

It educates the public about the mineral industries and reports outstanding accomplishments in the fields of mining and the earth sciences. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Pierre Lassonde, president of Newmont Mining and resident of the World Gold Council. He is one of Canada’s leading gold analysts.

In 2000, Laubscher’s Mining Rock Mass Rating (MRMR) classification system was updated and published. The new system brought a few fundamental changes that were in direct response to the challenges and problems encountered when applying the classification system in the mining environment, specifically caving operations. The fundamental changes introduced into the MRMR system in 2000 were the abandonment of the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) as an input parameter, accounting for healed and cemented joints, and the concept of rock block strength. The objective of this paper is not to discuss the role and usefulness of classification systems; the fact that classification systems are widely used in every stage of mining projects speaks for itself. This paper discusses some of the experiences gained with the MRMR 2000 system in various mining projects and shows how the changes to the system have resulted in improved assessment of rock mass conditions. Issues related to core logging for rock mass assessment are also presented.
