From the beginning, man has concerned himself with the task of controlling the elements and forces about him so as to provide a better and easier life. In the accomplishment of this task, he is required to utilize in the best way possible the resources which are available to him. In many cases, the available resources must bee refined before they are in a useable form. Many products in the mining industry fall into this category, as some form of refinement is generally needed to produce a saleable product. Over the years man developed more efficient ways of extracting the resources from earth through the use of electrical and mechanical devices. A reduction in manual labor, which is a by-product of increased efficiency through machines, has also been enjoyed. The combination of man's senses and new devices has also enabled man to reach a high level of control in the refinement process. Control of a process through machinery and man's senses has been termed an "art." Until recently man's senses (sight, feel) were the only method available for making measurements simply because suitable measurement devices (instruments) were not available. Even today some items cannot be measured and man's senses must be used. However, the development in our instrument laboratories tends to indicate that time will eliminate this. In recent years, control of many processes has been reduced to a science and part or all of the art eliminated. This does not imply that process art should be degraded; however, when a process is reduced to a science, uniformity of the product from day to day is attained. Decreased processing time and more efficient use of additives and raw materials are other benefits that result from control of a process when it is reduced to a science.

The Kidston gold discoveries were originally made about 1907, and by 1934, 1.76 Mg (62,000 oz) of gold had been produced from placer and lode mining of higher grade, most¬ly oxidized gold ore. As mining in the lode ore penetrated deeper, costs increased and the world gold price stagnated. The lode or underground production averaged close to 6.9 g/t (0.2 oz per ton) Au for the 201 kt mined. No mining or development took place from 1934 until 1965. Kidston's high grade ores were exhausted by 1934. From 1965 to 1976, exploration had developed 3 Mt of about 3 g/t (0.88 oz per ton) Au. Placer Pacific acquired rights to the property in 1976 and began a geologic and engineering study of the district. It was clear that the deposit had the potential for becom¬ing a large-tonnage, low-grade producer. However, explora¬tion had to discover the tonnage and grade and engineering needed to solve the obstacles of production costs. Bulk material handling problems were addressed by Placer's wide experience in open pit mining, and the increase in work index accompanying deeper ores was handled by Placer's metallurgists. The matter of power for the operation was solved by engineering studies. These showed that power could be generated and brought in economically. The price of gold also increased after 1976, and this helped in the economic analysis. The Kidston discovery since 1976 is really a combination of good exploration geology and careful engineering plan¬ning that overcame the obstacles presented by ore characteris¬tics and the location of the deposit. Recently, research efforts have been made to lower the magnesium content of phosphate rock concentrate to be a suitable feed for phosphoric acid production and other related industries. Among these efforts is the bioprocessing technique. However, this study is devoted to study of using an enzyme, extracted from coffee waste, as a surface modifier during the fatty acid flotation of calcareous phosphate rock. A mixture of oleic acid and kerosene was used as collector. Factors, which affect the enzyme activity such as enzyme dosage, solution pH, temperature and conditioning time, were studied. Under the appropriate conditions, a concentrate product containing less than 0.60% MgO was achieved from the Abu Tartur feed (1.80% MgO) with a P2O5 recovery of more than 94%.

The first stage of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Red Line Extension Northwest, is a two-track rapid transit extension from Harvard Square in Cambridge, through three stations, to the Alewife Station/Garage complex in North Cambridge. The extension, about 5.0 km. (3.1 miles) in length, is entirely in tunnel, with the Alewife Station/Garage complex and adjacent line sections of tunnel constructed by cut-and-cover methods. The Station/Garage complex, just west of Alewife Brook Parkway, is in an area underlain by deep deposits of very soft highly sensitive clays. It is proposed to construct the station and adjacent tunnel sections by the slurry trench method, using the slurry wall as the permanent structural wall of the station and tunnel. The unusual nature of the underlying clay and its very high sensitivity raised questions concerning the feasibility of the proposed construction. Since research failed to reveal any construction precedent for the specific conditions encountered, a test section was undertaken to determine construction problems, resolve uncertainties, and to establish acceptable parameters for the construction of the slurry walls. PROJECT ORGANIZATION Sverdrup & Parcel as tunnel and transit systems consultant for the Red Line Extension-Davis Square to Alewife had overall responsibility for determining program objectives, project management and test implementation.

BACKGROUND Gold Fields Mining Corporation started their Chimney Creek operation in late 1987. The dump leaching operations commenced in October and the mill startup took place during the last half of November. The milling process at Chimney Creek is almost a conventional CIP plant with the major exception being the installation of a second thickener as a washing stage prior to CIP12 ' A simplified flow sheet is shown in FIGURE 1. Most of the gold in the mill is liberated by grinding in cyanide. After grinding in a conventional SAGball sill circuit, the cyclone overflow reports to the thickeners. The thickener overflow from the first thickener is pumped through 5 stages of carbon columns for gold adsorption. Slurry from the thickener underflow is leached, washed, re-thickened and pumped to CIP. After approximately 6 hours of retention time in CIP, the slurry is pumped to tailings for final deposition. The carbon from CIP is transferred to the third stage of carbon adsorption and then advanced as normal through the columns and strip circuit. Loaded carbon is stripped at approximately 1500C (3000 F) and 55 kPa (80 psi). After 4-5 hours of stripping, the grade of four tons of carbon is reduced from 5,140-6,860 g/t (150¬200 oz/ton) to typically 17 g/t (0.5 oz/ton). Zinc precipitation is used to recover the gold from the pregnant solution. After a water wash, the stripped carbon is transferred to acid wash or to the kiln feed tank for reactivation. All strip lots are acid washed in 3.0% HC1 and all stripped carbon passes through the kiln for thermal reactivation. Then the carbon is quenched, sized and stored in tanks or bins for transferral to CIP or to the carbon columns. Loaded carbon from the dump leach circuit is treated in a circuit consisting of five carbon columns which are parallel to the mill circuit. No distinction is made between the mill or dump leach carbon once the gold has been stripped from them. CARBON FINES HANDLING Once the carbon has been transferred from the carbon columns, every effort is made to minimize carbon attrition and to recover the carbon fines that have been generated in the process. The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 t/h (2,200 stph) of low-grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines that feed four bulk-flotation banks with a scavenger-concentrate regrind mill und a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk-flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grude in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent- addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population-balance model that estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer that computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module that implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over a period of three months. The model-based expert optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5%, and an optimized bulk-concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

Recent work by Haas has made available information on densities and vapor pressures of solutions of differing salinities at temperatures up to 330°C. From these data it is possible to predict the behavior of volcanic exhalations of various degrees of salinity as they approach the sea floor. Particular attention is devoted to solutions of 5.0 weight per cent NaCl and 20 weight per cent NaCl, two fluids that approximate quite closely the salinities of what Roedder termed: (1) normal hydrothermal fluids and (2) fluids typical of stratiform deposits of low-temperature conditions of origin. It is apparent that solutions above 220-230°C. cannot reach a sea floor on which the depth of water is 600 feet or less in the liquid state but will boil at some appreciable depth beneath the sea floor. Such boiling would result in the precipitation of all constituents of the ore fluids of significantly lower vapor pressure than water. The principal such constituent would be salt, and no sulfide deposits, the major constituent of which is salt are known. It follows, therefore, that ore fluids probably never get close to the sea floor of shallow seas at temperatures high enough to permit boiling. Ore fluids significantly above 230°C. can reach the sea floor in the fluid state only if the depth of the sea in the area. in question is well above 600 feet, for example, solutions at temperatures of ±300°C. reach the sea floor in the liquid state only if the depth of sea water is slightly over 3000 feet. Ore fluids reaching the sea floor at such depths may be the parents of such fluids as the Red and Salton Sea brines. On the basis of these data, the Cyprus and Kuroko deposits are discussed.

A number of wells were drilled at two phosphogypsum stacks, one at P-21 owned by IMC and the other at Agrico's South Pierce Stack. Each well was sampled, and composites representing 5-ft increments were leached with synthetic rainwater to determine the extent of metal and nonmetal migration. To simulate what was occurring in the stack, composite samples were placed in a column, so that the column represented the stack in miniature form. Leaching experiments showed that both metals and nonmetals moved down the column when water was added to the top of the column. Data obtained from P-21 showed that with time the concentration of metals and nonmetals reached equilibrium values. The concentration of Ca, SO4, F, Si, and PO4 were -600 ppm,~1,500 ppm, 32 ppm, 14 ppm, and 22 ppm, respectively. Column leaching of South Pierce material, representing 0 to 55 ft of stack, showed that after 355 in. of water, the stack was near equilibrium values down to the 33-ft level. With continued addition of water, the portion of the stack at equilibrium would continue to increase and eventually reach the values observed for P-21. The test showed that the sulfate concentration of the effluent from the stack would never reach the USEPA standard value of 250 ppm. During the leaching test, it was determined that the permeability of the phosphogypsum in the columns was 0.000103 cm/sec. This number was used in the modeling. The data obtained from the leaching experiments cast some doubt on the practice of entombment now being practiced for closure of phosphogypsum stacks. The data clearly shows that with time, the amount of material leaching from the stack is low in concentration, with only the calcium and sulfate at higher levels. When a stack is closed at an existing operating plant, allowing rainwater to fall on the stack and capturing the solution in the existing pond system would eliminate the need for covering the stack, since with time the closed stack would continue to leach and at some point reach the equilibrium values of the P-21 stack. Entombment means that the leachable material in the stack will always be there and will require monitoring forever. Allowing rainwater to decontaminate the stack may be the best environmental solution to the problem.

During 1983, 42.2% of the 686.0 (624.3 Mt) million tons of coal reported, 289.6 (263.5 Mt) million tons were mechanically cleaned, of which 107 (97.4 Mt) million tons were cleaned by dense media (magnetite and sand) processes.' The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 38% between 1938 and 1983. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 150 million tons (137 Mt) of coal were cleaned by heavy-media processes in 1986, and that this number may increase to 265 million tons (241 Mt) by 1990.2 Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes that clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes generally offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: • Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of raw coal whose specific gravity is near the specific gravity of separation. • Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled within + 0.005 sp gr units. • Ability to handle a wide range of coal sizes. • Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. • Ability to handle fluctuations in feed, in terms of both quantity and quality. Unfortunately, dense medium processes can have the following disadvantages: • Relatively high capital costs caused primarily by the need for equipment to collect and recycle the medium. Relatively high operating costs caused primarily by operation of medium recycle equipment and loss of medium.

Murer Company, Andermatt, Switzerland, can claim to have done pioneer work in the construction of inclined shafts. This happened in 1968/69, when we decided to bore with a Wirth tunnel borer an inclined shaft, 1100 m in length, 3.0 m in diameter, and with a grade of 65%, in the 2400 kilo pascall per sq. cm granite of the Montblanc Massive. The whole excavation was accomplished in ten months which, at least for European conditions, can be claimed as a record. It was, at least to our knowledge, the first inclined shaft to be bored full-face (Fig. 1). Encouraged by the experiences and performances attained at Châtelard, we approached other projects of the same kind. We were awarded, together with Hochtief Ltd., Essen, a contract from Schluchseewerke, Freiburg, Germany, in December 1969, for the construction of a penstock for the Hornbergstufe at Wehr, Germany, with a diameter of 6.3 m. This inclined shaft with a grade of 55% is located in Schwarzwalder granite with a compressive strength of up to 2000 kilo pascall per sq. cm, about 31,000 psi. As no exact geological data were available about the rock to be worked, and a fault zone from 80 to 150 m long had to be faced, as well as a few individual fissures of varying thickness, it was decided to use the multi-stage method. The 3-m diam tunnelling machine which had driven the oblique shaft at Châtelard had now finished work, and an immediate beginning was made with driving the pilot staft. This was very welcome to the contractor, since exact information about the type of rock present and the inflows of water was required immediately and before the final borehole diameter was fixed, for the purpose of dimensioning the supports to be subsequently installed.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc. (FMI) will soon begin copper production from the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits near Safford, Arizona. Ore reserves total 615 M tons grading 0.36% copper, predominantly as chrysocolla. Copper extraction will be by leaching with sulfuric acid. Fluor Canada Ltd. provided EPCM services to design an ore handling and conventional SWEW facility capable of producing a nominal 240 million pounds per year of cathode copper. The ore handling facility will process 114,000 tons per day of ore through three-stage, open-circuit crushing followed by agglomeration and product placement on the permanent leach pad. Stacking of ore on the leach pad will utilize Terra Nova Technologies' "Super Portable" mobile stacking system. The stacking system fleet consists of 13 self- propelled, crawler-mounted mobile conveyor units, each with 72-inch-wide belting and a capacity of 6,800 tons per hour, including ten 250-foot-long portable conveyors, a horizontal feed conveyor, a 285-foot-long horizontal conveyor and a 220-foot-long radial stacker. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project History The Safford Leach Project is located in the Safford mining district in Graham County, Arizona, approximately eight miles northeast of the town of Safford and 170 miles east of Phoenix. The 3,360-acre property is located in the Gila River Valley, immediately south of the Gila Mountains, at elevations between approximately 3,000 and 5,400 feet above sea level. The Safford Leach Project is comprised of the Dos Pobres and San Juan deposits, two of five known copper ore deposits in the Safford mining district.

The Tertiary carbonate aquifer of central Florida is composed of about 2/3 calcite and 1/3 dolomite with minor amounts of quartz and apatite. The Mg content of the calcite is lower in the recharge areas than in the deeper confined parts of the aquifer system. Various geochemical lines of evidence indicate that much of the dolomite is of penecontemporaneous origin but that some may have been formed much later, possibly by ground water. Theoretical studies indicate that the Mg/Ca ratio in solutions is about unity for the three-phase equilibrium, calcite-dolomite-water. Solutions, such as ocean water and some subsurface brines, have Mg/Ca ratios higher than one and should represent dolomitizing solutions. In the areas of principal recharge to the Floridan aquifer, ground water is undersaturated with respect to both calcite and dolomite, and the Mg/Ca ratiois as low as 0.05. As the water moves downgradient, the Mg/Ca ratio systematically increases and approaches unity; saturation of the solution with respect to both calcite and dolomite also increases with length of travel in the system. Thus, in the zone of active potable-water circulation, the chemical process is one of dissolution of minerals until saturation is reached or exceeded. However, in the deeper brackish-water zones that underlie peninsular Florida, dolomite may be forming where the Mg/Ca ratio is greater than one. The necessary Mg may be derived from ocean water or brines recycled through the system as the hydrologic regimen is changed. The driving force may be simple mixing, relative fluctuations of sea level, or a combination of mechanisms.

Tar sand deposits in Utah represent more than 25 billion barrels of in-place bitumen, 96% of the known U.S. reserves. The technological development of a hot water processing strategy for the Canadian tar sands and the commercial Production of synthetic crude oil from this natural resource suggest that similar success may be possible for the utilization of Utah tar sands to provide our country with a new domestic source of synthetic crude oil. In this regard an active research program to develop a hot water processing strategy for Utah tar sands has been sustained at the University of Utah for the past five years. The hot water process for Utah tar sands differs significantly from that used for Canadian, tar sands due to the inherent differences in the respective bitumen viscosities and the nature of the bitumen-sand association. These differences have led to the identification of certain design criteria necessary to achieve satisfactory phase disengagement during digestion. (8,9) Subsequent flotation of the digested tar sand is a subject of current attention and is considered in this contribution for the Asphalt Ridge tar sand deposit. Although contact angle measurements of pure Asphalt Ridge bitumen indicate moderate hydrophobicity, air bubble attachment to the bitumen concentrate taken from a 37 liter flotation cell is not possible. This surprising result suggests that the flotation separation is dependent on air bubble entrapment rather than on attachment due to surface hydrophobicity. The occlusion of air bubbles in the bitumen is apparent from visual examination of the concentrate, especially at lower temperatures. It seems that a bitumen bubble agglomerate forms in the impeller region of the flotation cell, the effective density of which is such to allow the agglomerate to float to the surface. A factorial design of the major operating variables in the flotation separation indicated that the quality of separation was significantly dependent on the flotation temperature and to a lesser extent on the degree of agitation. For a flotation temperature of 77C recovery of 96.7 percent was realized at a grade of 61.0 percent bitumen. The improved separation at higher flotation temperatures was found to be due to the decrease in bitumen viscosity resulting in more effective rejection of coarse sand from the concentrate.

The CMC-3 new generation system for continuous methane monitoring enables on-line measurement of methane concentration within the range of 0-100% CH4 with a great autonomy of operation. In principle the system has been worked out in the asspect of hazard detection in mines endangered with rock and gas outbursts. But after last crash in the Halemba colliery, according to the recommendation of the after-accident committee, the system was directed to this colliery for operational tests. The paper describes construction and functions of this system and gives some results of tests conducted at the Halemba colliery. The results point out the necessity of using monitoring equipment of continuous operation in mines of high dynamics of methane emission. INTRODUCTION Commonly used in Polish coal mining the methane monitoring systems of CTT/63/46 Up or CMM-20 and CMC-1 type are based on cyclic measurements with 4-minute repetition of measurements. This period has been stated sufficient from viewpoint of methane emission dynamics under normal exploatation. In these systems, automatic switching-off electrical power is performed by the surface station, i.e in case of detecting exceeded concentration value the station generates control pulse signal which actuates the switchng-off devices CRA and IZZO. Such a way of disconnection causes a considerable time delay, up to several minutes, in electric power break at hazardous areas. In the methane monitoring system with the new CMC-3 station, the different phylosophy of operation has been applied. Measurement of methane concentration is performed in a continnous way. In case of exceeding the alarm value, immediate control of the IZZO unit directly by methane monitor follows and consequently energy break without necessity of communicating with the surface station. Alarm values are set directly in methane monitor. The system ensures central powering of underground equipment from the surface, and in case of power failure the methane monitor equipped with battery operates autonomously for about 12 hours. Such an extention of the methane monitor funtionality has been achieved thanks to the use of internal microprocessor controller. The system with the CMC-3 station has been worked out in the aspect of methane hazard detection in mines exposed to gas outbursts. But after last gas explosion, according the desicion of the After-accident Commitee, the system was installed in the Halemba coliery where it underwent operational tests. Besides

In the establishment of a useful failure criteria for complicated, fabricated structures, two basic areas of knowledge must be evaluated: 1. The accuracy of the applied stress analysis must be known in comparison with actual stresses encountered during mill operation. 2. The metallurgical fracture properties of the basic materials must be established with reference to non-destructive examination (NDE) methods to be used during fabrication. Both of the above can only be evaluated by use of full scale tests on the structures, and/or components, of interest. This paper describes such tests and comparisons as applied to several large mill installations. In addition, weldment component fatigue tests arid flawed casting strain gauge tests are also discussed. The combination of such test results allows for the formulation of failure criteria directly applicable to the fabrication and examination procedures followed in grinding mill structure manufacture.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health and- ministration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to coal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. The purpose of this discussion is to try to offer some suggestions as to how the zinc and lead markets will perform over the balance of the decade, review some of the factors influencing production and come to some conclusions regarding prices. The past 2 years have been simply awful in terms of consumption, prices and overall profitability for the industry. In looking ahead to the year 2,000, it is probably not a bad idea to look back about 20 years to see where we have been and how we got to where we are. Zinc consumption from 1950 to the early 1970's increased steadily and rather nicely at an annual average rate of close to 4.0%. It was starting in the early 1970's that things started to get volatile and at times, difficult for the industry. The general economic boom of the early 70's was marked by annual consumption rates close to 5.0 million tons, a level not seen again for over 10 years. The First Oil shock of 1973-74 was followed by the sharpest consumption drop in memory. In two years, Western World zinc consumption fell 27%. While our chart shows a rather dramatic recovery thereafter, the average annual growth rate since 1970 has only been a rather modest 1.5%.

In the underground type of mining operation, the finer portion of the waste material commonly is pumped as a hydraulic slurry to a tailings disposal pond. (1)* The tailings slurry is deposited via a pipe manifold system located around the perimeter of the pond. This method of deposition produces zoning because the coarser material tends to settle out immediately while the finer particles tend to remain in suspension and are deposited progressively nearer the center of the pond. The manifold system must be raised periodically as the pond fills with the tailings material. Over a period of time, this procedure will produce a zoned embankment known as a tailings dam. A typical pond and dam are shown in Figure 1. In plan view, the dimensions of tailings dams can be on the order of miles, with the height of the dam reaching 100 to 200 feet. Due to such factors as inadequate compaction, inherently low strength of the tailings material, and the possibility of high phreatic surface, many dams at some point become unstable, i.e., the factor of safety against a slope failure approaches 1.0. Remedial measures are required to improve the safety factor in order to prevent massive failure of the dam. In most cases, stability can be improved by effectively flattening the slope of the dam as shown in Figure 2, but this is not possible in every case. Occasionally, a tailings dam is constructed adjacent to a natural or legal boundary so that it is not possible to construct a conventional berm or to reduce the slope angle with earth moving equipment. Even a terracing process would require removal of the material and this may not be practical. In such a situation, an alternate scheme to improve stability must be found.

In July, 1988, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Advisory Committee on Standards and Regulations for Diesel-Powered Equipment in Underground Coal Mines recommended that the Secretary of Labor set in motion a mechanism whereby a diesel particulate standard can be set. Prerequisite to establishing a standard would be the development and evaluation of instrumentation to measure diesel particulate. In response, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, Dust Division, has been evaluating instrumentation that can be used to determine diesel particulate levels in underground mines. This instrumentation employs the principle of impaction to separate particles by size, thereby, separating the diesel and nondiesel particulate. Separation of the particulate by size was chosen because diesel particulate is generally less than 1.0 micrometer in size. No other methods have been developed to successfully distinguish between the coal and diesel particulate. MSHA developed an impactor that is inexpensive and compatible with existing pumps and filter holders. The instrumentation evaluation has primarily focused on the repeatability and performance of several personal dust samplers. The samplers tested include the Sierra-Andersen Model 298 personal impactor and MSHA developed personal impactor. The MSHA impactor is inexpensive and compatible with the existing pumps and filter holders. In addition to evaluating the precision and performance of these instruments, tests have been conducted to determine background levels of submicron particulate in nondieselized coal mines and to measure the submicron particulate content in dieselized coal mines. Tests were conducted in coal mines where diesel equipment was used only in outby areas and also in coal mines where diesel equipment was used for face haulage. This paper describes the results of the tests and provides a description of the instrument at ion used to conduct the tests.
