Since 1900, smelters have produced in Canada over 10 million tonnes of iron silicate waste slag containing significant quantities of nickel, cobalt and copper. The slag is reduced with aluminum and calcium oxide additions to produce a copper, nickel, and cobalt enriched alloy and an obsidian slag. It was found that the obsidian slag contained very low copper, nickel, and cobalt contents, indeed below 0.06% of each the base metals. These metals have been collected in a type of ferroalloy with up to 1.6% Cu, 2.1% Ni, and 0.7% Co. These alloys can be recycled according to standard procedures in base metal smelters. Surprisingly, the obsidian slag was found to display good cementitious and pozzolanic properties, which is a requirement for cement production. The strength producing properties of the obsidian slag are considered to be exceptional at the 28 day standard test age. In most cases, the obsidian concrete is characterized by significantly greater strengths than control concrete tests and concrete containing fly ash or blast furnace slag. Compressive strength data at 365 days for the obsidian concrete is impressive.

With the growing demand for energy, explora¬tion for uranium deposits has dramatically increased in the past few years. Since the early ages of uranium exploration, natural gamma ray logs has proved fast and convenient in locating and evaluating mineralized bodies. However, natural gamma ray logging is an indirect measure of the uranium content and in some circonstances, the radiometric signal can be 'altered in a very significant way. To check the presence of any distortion, statistical comparision of radiometric counts and chemical assay values for the same samples is generally performed. Of course in such studies, one inevitably mixes samples where the radiometric signal is really proportional to the uranium content and samples where this signal is influenced by many other sources or distorted before being recorded. Nevertheless, the average tendency leads to correction factors which are then applied to every radiometric reading in the deposit or portion of the deposit where the statistical comparison is made. To account for the "average" character of these correction factors, a parameter of uncertainty like a standard deviation of possible errors is associated to each corrected value. This parameter can be latter used in an ore reserve estimation when the weights assigned to samples should depend on the precision of their grade. The purpose of this paper is to present a new regression technique which can be used without any restrictive hypothesis like a normal or lognormal distribution. Different standard ways which can be used to statistically compare radiometric and chemical assay values for the same sample and to derive a correction factor for the latter will first be reviewed, after a general discussion of disequilibrium problems. The discussion and the examples will be restricted to the case of natural gamma ray logging in drill holes but the methods presented in this paper can also be applied to data from the radiometric probing of a working face or a truck load in an operating mine.

A comprehensive project has been completed at the University of British Columbia that focused on the development of a commercially competitive composite cable bolt. Laboratory evaluation consisted of pull tests, preliminary shear tests, grout column testing and scanning electron microscope evaluation of the composite cable bolt. Field implementation at five underground mines throughout Canada were completed for technical and overall performance evaluation of the new product. The project began in 1989 under the sponsorship of HDRK Ltd., a consortium of mining companies including Inco, Noranda and Falconbridge Ltd. The objective was to develop a cuttable cable bolt that would serve as support for a continuous miner within a hardrock environment (Mah, 1994). The bolt was required to be cuttable by a continuous roadheader without adverse effects to equipment, personnel and the milling process. From the beginning, the focus was to employ existing cable bolt installation technology (Goris et al., 1994) whereby the cable bolts are grouted within a 4.8-cm-diam (1.08-in.diam) or larger employing a portland cement grout having a water:cement ratio between 0.35:1 to 0.4:1.

DOUG HALBE: Thanks, Terry. And in spite of your introductory comments, I'm going to attempt to continue our hallowed tradition of saying nice things about the speakers. This is really a serious comment now. We, as mineral processing and mill people, don't often talk to people outside our general operating area. One thing that we've tried to do in this operators' symposium is get speakers from various types of plant operations to help illustrate all the things we have in common. Our next speaker is from the industrial minerals area. I think there's a lot to be learned from industrial minerals operations. Some of the people in the last session learned some things about fine grinding in industrial mineral operations. I was a little surprised to see people there grind to 2 microns. Our next speaker is Frank Alsobrook. Frank is another nonmetallurgical engineer. He has a degree in geology, a master's of science from the University of Wisconsin. He's had his own very successful consulting company for a number of years. This is your 11th anniversary, Frank? Very good. He's also the immediate past chair of the industrial minerals division. I think the folks at the speakers' table should be ashamed. You have been so rowdy that Frank chose to sit in the audience. [laughter] We'd like you to come up now, Frank, and tell us some things that you've seen that might be useful to us. INTRODUCTION FRANK ALSOBROOK: The three topics addressed briefly are (1) teamwork and operations modeling, (2) the pitfalls of capital conservatism, and (3) the potential for by-product recovery. Ideas for improvements in these areas are not unique to industrial minerals but apply to metal mining and processing operations, as well. Several additional topics are suggested at the end of the paper.

This paper will cover the problems confronting an owner when planning and estimating the cost of a proposed tunnel. Three factors are known: the length, size and the time allocated for the completion of the work. In general the difficulties encountered when driving a tunnel in California are the greatest at the lower elevations and in the Coast Range and are minimal in the Sierra Nevada mountains particularly in granitic formation. The writer will discuss the experience gained from observing the driving of about 120 miles of tunnel in California as well as the repairs of some tunnels. SIZE OF TUNNELS It is known that a small tunnel may be more costly to drive than one of somewhat larger dimensions. This fact was found to be true when a tunnel about 4,000 feet long was constructed to eliminate 7 miles of canal. The formation was lava so it was anticipated the ground would be self supporting because of the small bore. Actually the tunnel required support for most of its length and working conditions were poor. It became apparent that a larger size could have been driven at no additional cost and probably in less time. The objective of this paper is to describe a study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy during which a model was developed to optimize haulback mining procedures in single and multiple seam contour mines, The study objective was to achieve financial- based productivity increases approaching twenty percent. This paper reviews the results of the first year's Phase I activities, which include four main tasks: formulate a methodology that can be used to select equipment and mining procedures that result in optimal performance in a particular haulback mining situation; conduct field studies of representative single and multiple seam mines to obtain quantitative background information for development of the formulated methodology: develop the methodology into a useful design tool for mine operators; and prepare plans for field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed tool.

The effect of the chemical composition of pulverized bituminous coal particles on their physical transformation during the initial stages of combustion has been investigated. The results suggested that cenosphere formation does not require extensive thermal decomposition of the coal particles. The vitrinites in the bituminous coal softened earlier and developed larger cenospheres than the othe macerals. The coal particles swell to a higher extent during combustion than in pyrolysis; however, the cenospheres formed in the former process experienced a higher extent of fragmentation. The development of microporosity occurred predominantly after the resolidification of the swelled char particles. The type of macerals originally in the coal did not significantly affect the microporosity of the chars. Conversely, the morphology and anisotropy of the chars were strongly dependent on the maceral composition of the coal.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, ['ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. 4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder's method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. Outokumpu Oy has acquired considerable experience with on-stream X-ray fluorescence analyzers and with computer control of flotation processes over several years. It became evident at the outset of this work that a reliable and accurate on-stream analyzer was more than a collection of different pieces of hardware linked together. Extensive work was done to develop an integral analyzer system, beginning with process samples through the spectrometer to report typewriters, recorders and the control computer. To date, over ten Courier-300 analyzer systems based on this development have been installed world-wide, several of which provide the key information for successful computer control systems. Computer control of flotation processes has been under development at the Pyhäsalmi concentrator since 1968. Two different control strategies have been implemented. The copper flotation is controlled by means of a mathematical model and economic criteria, whereas the "evolutionary operation principle" is applied to the zinc flotation. The computer control system installed at' the Vuonos-mine has been developed according to the same guidelines. In order to consolidate this wide experience, a flotation computer control system, Proscon-100, was developed by Outokumpu Oy, and the first system was installed at Kotalahti in 1972. In addition to the technological experience, enough information has also been gathered to illustrate the economical, benefits accruing through the use of these advanced tools of automation.

We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

One year ago this month, we in Central Florida witnessed the beginning of a most exciting and glamorous attraction. After three years of construction and anticipation, Walt Disney World opened its gates near Orlando and during its first year of operation received a flood of over 10 million visitors---half of all who came to Florida last year! The side effects of this newest addition to Florida have been phenomenal. Traffic on heavy days has been backed up for 30 miles from the amusement park along a major interstate highway. Hotels and motels have been jammed packed for months, and reservations are still difficult to make. Gasoline stations, restaurants and souvenir shops are doing a booming business. Everywhere you look as you ride the highways of Central Florida you see the signs of growth. New hotels spring up almost overnight. Golf courses galore. New housing projects and apartments sprawl where orange groves used to be. New roads criss-cross areas which were once deserted. There seems to be no end to the steady influx of tourists and new residents to the Sunshine State. And it's mainly because that we are the Sunshine State that they come. Air and water pollution is and has been at a minimum in Florida. Pollution and emissions are fighting words among some groups dedicated to preserving the bountiful environment we share in Florida. Little wonder then that some of these people display concern when they learn that just 50 miles from the entrance to the Magic Kingdom of Disney, phosphate draglines strip away thousands of acres of land each year to extract one of our nation's most precious

More than 100,000 residents of Springfield and surrounding communities live on karst (sinkhole) terrain on the Springfield Plateau in southwestern Missouri. The city occupier much of the headwaters area of Wilson Creek basin, which is underlain by the Burlington Limestone (Mississippian), a cavernous, massively bedded formation averaging 150 feet in thickness. Sinkholes, some as deep as 75 feet, pock-mark the uplands. Stony red residual clay mantles the pinnacled limestone bedrock. Surface water lost to sinkholes and losing reaches of upstream areas resurges in springs and estevellas (reversible sinkholes) in the lower reaches of Wilson Creek. The Springfield Southwest Treatment Plant, an activated sludge process sewage treatment facility, situated about mid-basin at the confluence of Wilson Creek and a tributary, South Creek, serves the entire city. Effluent from the treatment plant together with industrial, street-wash and other waste from the-headwaters of the basin have degraded both surface and ground water quality in much of the Wilson Creek watershed. The area affected includes Wilson's Creek Battlefield National Park and recreational reaches of James River below the mouth of Wilson Creek.

If the primary purpose of a control system is to assure a fixed-quality product at maximum yield, the real issue involved in control of the fine coal cleaning circuit in a plant is to demonstrate that control is technically feasible and economically beneficial . This paper suggests that it is not easy to do so in most cases. Fine coal, defined here as the 28 mesh x 0 fraction of the plant feed, is generally cleaned using a combination of hydrocyclones and flotation. Both of these processes are relatively insensitive to changes in operating variables. Further, the fines fraction general 1 y forms no more than 20% of the plant feed and, at times, is as low as 10%. The instruments to measure flow rates, densities, and product qua1ity (ash, sulfur, etc.) are not sufficiently accurate to allow effective responses to changing state variables and product quality. It is sufficient to run the fine coal circuits at maximum recovery, and the control of product quality and optimization of yield should be achieved by controlling the coarse coal circuits and measuring the quality of the entire clean coal leaving the plant. This contention is made with particular reference to U.S. plants cleaning coal for the utility industry and should be viewed in this context only. It is explicitly admitted that this strategy is mathematically non-optimal in the sense that all size fractions are not necessarily cleaned at equal elementary ash, and would result in a loss of yield. However, under the conditions of conventional coal cleaning practice, this is a sensible approach.

BACKGROUND OF TARP The first settlement in Chicago in the 1830's was only 0.61 m (2 ft) above the level of Lake Michigan. The area was flat and swampy with local streams and rivers generally flowing to Lake Michigan. Repeated outbreaks of cholera and typhoid fever in the middle and late 1800's led to the reversal of the river system (away from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River). As a result of this reversal, the Chicagoland area has had to restrict water withdrawals from Lake Michigan and has had to develop and implement water management programs in compliance with orders set down by the Supreme Court of the United States. In order to comply with restricted lake diversion requirements and to compensate for a natural setting which was essentially hostile to human habitation, it has been necessary to embark on the construction of massive public works which include the world's largest water filtration plants, the world's largest wastewater treatment plants and finally the construction of TARP. The rivers and streams in the Chicago area are the headwaters of the Illinois waterway system. These headwaters are heavily polluted from combined sewer overflows of the area. Present pollution control laws require that combined sewer overflows be eliminated so that the rivers and streams can be used by the citizens of Cook, Du Page and Will Counties and other downstream communities. Fifty-three of the older most densely populated communities including the City of Chicago, covering an area of 971 sq km (375 sq miles), are served by combined sewers. The predicted warming of the earth's surface, presently the subject of much debate, controversy and legislation, is based on what is termed "the greenhouse effect." This is the result of the property of certain atmospheric gases. These gases allow the passage of radiant energy to the earth's surface and reflect back, to the earth, the infrared radiation given out by the heated surface. Physicists have computed that if there were no greenhouse effect the average temperature of the earth, now about 15° C (60T), would be close to -18° C (OT). Just what gases have produced this salubrious effect? Water vapor is the most important. Then come carbon dioxide, methane and a number of minor constituents of the atmosphere, both natural and man-made. Climate change, its cause and its impact on human activities have been the subject of scientific and historical study for more than a century. Recently, some scientists have concluded that if the man-made increase in the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases continues, by the late 21st century the earth's global average temperature will rise between 2° to 8° F. This temperature rise would cause the water in the oceans to expand and the massive polar glaciers to melt. In 1980, it was predicted that the sea level would rise 7.6 m (25 ft) by the late 21st century. By 1985, the predicted rise was 1 m (3 ft); and by 1989, it was 0.3 m (1 ft) (Jastrow, Nierenberg and Seitz, 1990). Agricultural scientists have pointed out that an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide would enhance biological growth including the production of foodstuffs.

1.1 The purpose of this paper is to show the way by which estimates are made of the tonnage and grade of iron ore and taconite reserves of Minnesota. 1.2 The procedures include those of estimating the open pit reserves of: (a) Natural iron ore, and (b) Taconite 1.3 The methods of estimation which will be discussed are primarily based on the information from exploring iron ore deposits. They consider the geology of the deposit as well as the contained mineral of potential value. 2.0 Some geologic, engineering, and economic principles. 2.1 Ore 2.11 "In the broad economic sense, and from a legal standpoint as well, ore is mineralized rock, which under appropriate conditions of time, space, technology, economics, and politics, can be mined, processed, and made to yield a saleable metal , or other mineral products at a profit."(Parks, 1957) Stated differently, metallic ore is rock material from which presently known methods of beneficiation, a merchantable concentrate, suitable for use in the manufacture of metals at a profit, can be produced. Crude ores as low as 0.38% metal, as in the case of copper and even lower in the case of the precious metals.

The phosphate rock review did not arrive in time for publication in the. June issue. The world phosphate industry continued its slide in 1992 from the already depressed levels in 1991. The industry is locked into a 30-year fertilizer price low due to the worldwide fertilizer glut. Domestic production and imported, marketable phosphate rock decreased 1%, while domestic consumption increased by 1 % last year. The US Bureau of Mines reported a decrease in the domestic phosphate rock value from $25.42/t in 1991 to $23/t in 1992 ($23.06/st to $20.80/st). The diammonion phosphate (DAP) product price also dropped in value from $138/ t in January 1992 to $11 0/t in December ($125/st to $99.70/st). Continued declines in DAP prices is forcing the US fertilizer industry to develop cost-saving programs and reorganizations. Layoffs in 1992 resulted in a 7.6% decrease in the Florida phosphate workforce. Since 1980, the Florida workforce has declined by 35%. Small phosphate companies were forced to close operations or were sold to larger phosphate companies. Federal and state environmental regulations for byproduct waste disposal methods are being studied. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved phosphogypsum use in agri¬cultural and research applications as long as the radium 226 concentration is lower than 10 pci/g. The EPA is also reviewing regulations concerning air emissions at fertilizer plants. Industry publications reported the possibility of continued company sales and mergers in 1993. Industry expectations are optimistic while waiting for an upturn in the market. The US phosphate industry consolidation into three or four major companies should evolve into a stronger world market force.
