There are a number of air classifiers manufactured throughout the United States and the rest of the world. The classifiers manufactured by Alpine, A. G. of Augsburg, Germany, are unique in their abilities. It is this uniqueness that I wish to delve into and in this respect we will limit this discussion primarily to the classifiers as manufactured by Alpine. It has been reported in the past that these classifiers were introduced into the. United States in the late 50's. Until the introduction of the Alpine Classifiers, air classification seldom produced a satisfactory fractionation of a product below 45 microns (325 mesh) or above approximately 22 mesh. It has been a common practice to classify fine materials which used water as a carrier medium The use of centrifuges are today producing thousands of tons of finely partitive powders in the very small particle size range. The use of centrifuges in connection with wet grinding mills has increased the rates of production of these mills considerably.

In the past, salt cavities for storage of liquid and gaseous fuels have been developed and operated using practical experience as a guide rather than rock mechanics principles and practices. Although many salt cavities are still operating satisfactorily. some of them are beginning to show various problems associated with long-term deterioration of the cavities. This paper describes a major breakthrough in the rock mechanics design of solution cavities which is the development and application of the REM computer simulation system. From the computer simulation analysis, the long-term deterioration process of cavities can be related to the basic parameters of rock mechanics design and the storage operations. The computer simulation system is also used for optimizing cavity design and operational specifications. This optimization technique is explained by its application to the three basic storage systems: 1) open dry storage system for liquids and solids 2) open wet storage system for liquids 3) pressurized storage system for gases, liquids and solids The effectiveness of the optimization technique is illustrated with some field examples by showing the direct interaction between the computer simulation system and field data of a test well including tectonic stress conditions, material property coefficients and geological anomalies.

Coal is found in every major geographic region throughout Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852 over 100 small mines have opened and closed. Last years production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure one illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and western United States. The Arctic region of Alaska generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The Central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of western United States. The Southcentral and Southeastern regions has a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the west coast of the United States.

Recently developed clay deposits that will impact regional and world markets are described. These deposits, their location, geology, and physical properties are delineated. Kaolins from the State of Para in Brazil and from Ukraine; bentonites from Argentina and India; and palygorskite and sepiolite from China are world class deposits that when processed using modem technology will produce excellent products. Other deposits that may affect regional markets are l<aolins from China, Australia and Indonesia; bentonites from Georgia (formerly USSR) and China; and palygorskite from India and Ukraine. New ball clay deposits that will affect regional markets are in China and Indonesia.

The challenge of mining coal seams having a pitch of 30 degrees is one not frequently found in the United States, due primarily to the scarcity of such deposits. However, in the Thompson Creek District in Pitkin, Colorado, such a challenge exists to produce high quality medium volatile coking coal, and development of a longwall system is underway. The deposits under consideration are those of the Anschutz Corporation Inc. of Denver, Colorado, which are not in a virgin state. The properties were originally mined by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation from 1894-1907, and by the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. from 1953-1966. Approximately five and one half million tons of coal have been mined by the above companies, attesting to its quality. The cessation of operations in both instances was occasioned by economics. Both companies employed a room and pillar system of mining, but being denied the use of high capacity mining and loading machinery because of the excessive pitch of the coal seam. This resulted in an unfavorable productivity expressed as output per man-shift, and thus the high cost of production occasioned by hand loading and semi-mechanization dictated cessation of operations. Under normal circumstances, methane released along a longwall face represents only 10%-20% of the total me- thane emitted from the entire longwall panel. However, there might be a sudden surge of methane at the face which may cause a potential problem because the friction from shearer cutting, support movement, and scraper conveyor dragging can be ready ignition sources. Therefore, to predict the distribution of methane will be critical to prevent possible explosions. In this paper, methane dispersion patterns along a lognwall face are simulated under normal and abnormal conditions. With the simulation of methane released from the face, around shearer drum, and from the broken coal on the conveyor, places with possible high methane content can be identified by different phases of working process and shearer positions. Local ventilation measures are evaluated so precautionary measures can be planned ahead.

Introduction In 1979, rumors of a developing drug problem within IMC Fertilizer&apos;s Carlsbad, NM workforce began to surface. For the next two years, a management team contacted local, state, and federal regulatory agencies that had the potential resources to help combat this apparently escalating problem. These contacts included the local police department, the county sheriff&apos;s office, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). IMC approached each agency with two proposals. The first required the agency provide an undercover agent for placement in the company&apos;s underground facilities. The alternative required the company to provide the agent with the participating agency lending necessary legal expertise and guidance to accumulate the necessary data. MSHA regulations prohibit intoxicating beverages and narcotics on mining property. They also forbid persons under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from working in or around mines. The agency could not, however, help with this problem. The remaining agencies were sympathetic, but were unwilling to assist in implementing either program, citing legal implications. Without exception, these agencies not only refused to provide help, they discouraged any type of undercover operation, searches, drug screenings, or using dogs trained in narcotics detection. As law enforcement officials, they reasoned that any such program constitutes potential civil rights violations. An attorney advised IMC that it was not required to adhere to the same guidelines as law enforcement and regulatory agencies. It was his legal opinion that the company could conduct an undercover operation. But he recommended finding a private firm that specialized in this type of investigation. An experienced firm should have the expertise to conduct the operation and avoid the legal pitfalls that could be encountered. The management team agreed with the attorney and elected to hire a private firm. After extensive research and evaluation, three reputable companies were contacted, advised of the needs, and asked to submit a proposal. Their initial response was enthusiastic. None, however, submitted a proposal. Each was unable to locate a qualified agent willing to work in an underground environment. Privacy and civil rights At this point, it was apparent that an undercover operation was not feasible due to the lack of inhouse expertise and the lack of outside assistance. After more research, it was concluded that the only viable options left were the ones that the law enforcement community had earlier discouraged. These options included locker and personal searches, use of dogs trained in narcotics detection, and drug screening or testing. The management team evaluated the pros and cons of locker and personal searches. They concluded that if conducted properly, this approach could eliminate the problems. The potential legal liabilities, however, appeared to be tremendous. Strict guidelines would have to be adhered to in order to avoid invasion of privacy and civil rights violations. This meant announcing locker searches before conducting them and obtaining written permission from an individual before searching his person. Although the group was reluctant to lose yet another option, it was concluded that conducting searches under these conditions would be ineffective. It would also convey the message to the workforce that the substance abusers had the upper hand. This author was extremely critical of this legal opinion at the time. I have since concluded that the attorney was correct. This occurred in mid-1982. Court decisions of that era indicated the legal and political climate was sensitive to these issues. In this paper, several commonly used computer truck dispatching criteria are evaluated. A computer-oriented truck dispatching and production simulator was developed to provide data for comprehensive cross comparison among the dispatching criteria. The definitions, primary considerations, characteristics, and performances of these dispatching criteria were investigated. From the simulation results, it was concluded that, in general, no one criterion can dominate all others. All basic dispatching criteria including minimizing truck waiting time, minimizing shovel waiting time, minimizing truck saturation, maximizing truck momentary productivity, or truck routes optimization provide a local optimal solution. To obtain a direct global optimization solution for this complex stochastic process does not appear to be likely. Therefore, the search for an optimal dispatching criterion that will fit all conditions may not be realistic. However, based on the simulation results of the mine operation, several dispatching criteria which have good potential to increase performance can be selected. It may be necessary to search for the best combination of these truck dispatching criteria for a given situation. For example, a truck flow measurement such as the truck clustering factor at shovels can be used as a switch parameter to change from one criterion to another. The values for the switch parameter at which actions should be taken to change the criterion can be established through simulation programs.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950&apos;s and 19601s, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines available today have unit volumes in the range of 38 to 42 m3 (1,350 to 1,500 cft). In fact, the motivating forces of increasing capital and energy costs and decreasing ore grades, which created the need for large flotation cells, not only still exist, but are becoming more critical. This paper reports the development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the development of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

An air-pulsated jig has been widely adopted as a main coal washer. It may be mainly because of its many technical and economic features such as large capacity, low running cost, long life, etc. However, the recent increasing demand of fuel coal requires a higher productivity and efficiency of the air-pulsated jig. To fill this requirement theoretical and experimental investigations have been conducted on model and practical jigs in Japan. This paper generalizes the results of these investigations. In jig operation it is essentially of the most importance to create efficiently the pulsation of the water best suited for coal washing. The optimum pulsation should be determined by the theory of jigging process, and the method to realize it by that of pulsating mechanism.

Sometimes a project is born easy, sometimes a project has a hard time being born. Probably every project can say we had tremendous problems to overcome and they would all be right. This project had all things happen to it. Born easy, a hard time after being born, there were tremendous problems to overcome but here it is, a major copper project, a major operation, and a new source of copper for Mexico and the world market. La caridad is an ore body located in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It is at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level and the nearest major city is Hermosillo, the capital city of Sonora. Hermosillo is located approximately 270 kms (about 168 miles) to the southwest of la caridad. North of la caridad, 130 kms (about 81 miles), is the U.S. border town of Douglas, Arizona, which has a sister city on the Mexican side of the border -Agua Prieta.

The Thunderbird plant was erected in Sullivan County in Indiana during 1958-1959. It was first put in operation in March of 1959. At the present time the source of the raw coal is from the Indiana No. 6 seam. The underground operation at present consists of two continuous mining units and two conventional units. The underground is all belt haulage and the first unit with which this paper is concerned is the slope belt. It is a 48-inch-wide inclined belt with 980-foot centers and a lift of 275 feet. The belt is powered with a 350 H, P, motor and has a rated capacity of 600 Tons per Hour. The belt is equipped with a Merrick Scale Company Weightometer, The raw coal moves from the belt to a 6&apos;x12&apos; extra heavy Allis-Chalmers Ripl-Flo equipped with 6" round-hole screens. The over product of the screen is fed into a 10&apos;x20&apos; long McNally- Pittsburg rotary breaker equipped with 4-l/2" round-hole screens. The oversize rock is discharged into a bin that is emptied with a refuse truck. The through-product of the breaker, along with the through-product of the Ripl-Flo, passes either directly to the McNally Giant washbox or to a 36" belt that transports it to a 1000-ton storage bin,&apos; The change from either to the washbox or to the storage bin is made by use of a motorized gate controlled by the plant operator,

"PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million inhabitants. The project was constructed by a joint venture of four South American contractors (“the JV”), and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment Plant: A 16 hectare area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored Tunnel: Nearly 15 km of 3.6 m inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m below grade, was bored with two EPB tunnel boring machines to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions: Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access & Ventilation Shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of: one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (Intake and Treatment Plant, respectively), and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installed afterwards. Access Shaft 3, the intermediate shaft located between the launch shaft and the treatment plant, experienced persistent leaks during initial excavation attempts."

The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920&apos;s, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

American Aggregates Corporation is one of the leading producers of mineral aggregates in the nation. Production is from deposits of glacial sand and gravel and limestone and dolomite bedrock. Annual production from 33 plants is 25,000,000 tons. Land consumption is at the rate of 300 to 400 acres annually. This annual rate of consumption presents a continuing challenge to the exploration and mining personnel to meet the requirements of reserve replacement, mining and land rehabilitation.

One of the first activities after returning to the Moon will be finding sources of water and materials for the construction of human settlements and other infrastructure. There is evidence of the existence of deposits in the bottom of craters at the South Polar region and in flat areas around. Based on geological data from the Moon, a block model representing a deposit or icy regolith has been defined in the vicinities of Shackleton Crater, with unique characteristics of shape, thickness, and water contents. A mine plan utilizing surface mine modeling software for ore extraction from an open pit- type of excavation to a delivery point near a water processing facility is proposed, with monthly, quarterly, and yearly schedules. Production results, dashboard charts and progress of the topographic changes are also presented.

Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental and technical aspects of openpit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (1) controllable factors, like mine equipment selectivity and blast design, and (2) uncontrollable factors, such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls preblast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, through a number of case studies, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cutoff grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit. The results show that changes in cutoff grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy

"INTRODUCTION This report summarizes a research about mines which are transitioning from surface to underground mines. It is a guide to make strategic decision in these increasing amount of mines. Capital and operating costs are linked with major strategic decisions in the exploitation of an ore body. This is the reason to analyze costs related to this transitioning world trend. There are multiple reasons for transitioning from Open-Pit (OP) to Underground (UG) mining. The primary economic incentive for going UG is that the cost per unit of ore from OP mining eventually exceeds that from UG extraction. This is due to the excessive amount of waste that must be extracted when the depth of the pit increases. In addition, the reduced footprint of UG operations contributes to diminish the environmental impact on the surface. Furthermore, it becomes more difficult to find new, easily accessible ore deposits. Then, a cost model helps to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP-to-UG mines. Objectives • Propose a methodology to guide strategic decisions in the transition from OP to UG mining. • Create an integrated cost model based on existing OP and UG individual cases. • Identify and characterize a group of mines transitioning from OP to UG. • Analyze operating and capital costs of a particular transitioning from OP to UG mine. MAIN CONCEPTS Open Pit Mining (OP) The main decisions in OP mines are: Cut-off grade, Stripping Ratio (SR), equipment size, stockpiling, pushback sequencing and processing capacity. The stripping ratio is measured as the tonnage of waste required to be removed to reach and extract one tonne of ore. The material extracted from an OP exploitation can be classified as waste and ore. This classification depends on the cut-off grade. The cut-off grade indicates the minimum amount of material with economic value in a block. The waste from the mine is going to the waste dump and the ore is going to stockpiles where will be store and then going to the processing plant (leaching or concentrator). The waste of this process is going to the tailing pond big pools. And the product is sell in the market. Another important issue is the mining capacity which is going to define the investment in mining equipment. Underground Mining (UG) The first decision to be made in order to open an underground mine is selecting the mining method. Caving methods are the more productive and have lower operating costs. There are three caving methods: Block Caving (BC), Panel Caving (BC) and Sublevel Caving (BC). The access development could be an horizontal adit or a straight or downspiral decline. A shaft could be used for inclined or vertical access. Other key issues are: equipment capacity, cut-off grade and production sequencing."

The Lynne deposit is a volcanic-to volcaniclastic-hosted, Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag orebody located in the early Proterozoic magmatic terrain of northern Wisconsin. As of February 1991, core drilling has partially delineated a multi-million ton, near-surface, disseminated to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is hosted by a gently dipping sequence of fragmental rhyolites, felsic tuffs, less abundant dacite to andesite flows, and fine-grained volcanic sediments. The deposit is broadly conformable With the host rock stratigraphy, but the ore zones thicken and coalesce in the central part of the deposit.

Throughout the 1970s, the US Bureau of Mines rode an ebb tide in Washington political circles. In rapid fire succession, the agency lost its mine health and safety enforcement responsibility (1973), a large portion of its energy research responsibility (1975), and then its fuel statistics functions plus a sizable portion of its coal R&D (1977). By 1978, johnny-come-latelies in the Energy, Labor, and Interior Departments had siphoned away from the Bureau some $125 million in program responsibilities as well as 900 of its employees. The bruising decade came to a close with a Department of Natural Resources proposal that, in its original form, would have scattered the Bureau&apos;s responsibilities to the winds. "There is no doubt in my wind," said Lindsay Norman, acting director of the Bureau of Mines (see box), "that were the Bureau to continue down the path it was on, the next step was closing the doors and going out of business." The doors are still open, but erosion of responsibilities had a devastating effect on the resources available to fulfill the Bureau&apos;s mission. Devastating, too, in terms of internal morale, considering the Bureau had six directors in a 10-year span. "When the troops are in the trenches and are being shot at," Norman said, "they need a leader-hopefully, a permanent one- that can get them advancing. This is something the Bureau did not consistently have in the 1970s." In September 1978, Roger Markle climbed aboard as director of the Bureau to rejuvenate the 70-year-old agency. He resigned only six months later* but the program Markle set in motion is being carried through by Lindsay Norman. Since Norman&apos;s appointment as acting director, he has spent considerable time on the road explaining his agency&apos;s redefined goals. At one such stop in Duluth, Norman and his two deputy directors, Charles Kenahan and Mike Kaas, answered the following questions. Lindsay, you were the principal architect in the Bureau&apos;s 1979 reorganization. How about a glimpse of what that entailed? Toward the end of the 1970s, after almost a decade of steady dismemberment, we reached what we felt was a critical point in the Bureau&apos;s history-we had the choice of redefining and strengthening our organization to meet the mineral challenges ahead, or continuing down the path toward the agency&apos;s eventual demise. We felt the Bureau&apos;s mission too important to abandon, so in 1978 with Roger Markle as director we initiated a six-month, no-holds-barred intro spection of just what the Bureau should be doing, why, and toward what ultimate national needs. And what did this self-reflection reveal? That there is, indeed, a unique federal role for the Bureau of Mines-that of a lead agency for influencing mineral decisions and pioneering tomorrow&apos;s technologic advances. Don&apos;t confuse us with policymakers, we&apos;re not. But we are policy analysts; we&apos;re scientists, engineers, and mineral professionals who can offer a sorely needed source of objective, accurate information to decision makers in both the public and private sectors. I feel there is no better brain trust in government than the Bureau when it comes to mineral expertise-of course, I&apos;m biased. Do I understand you to say the Bureau of Mines is an advocate agency for the minerals industry? We plead no parochial interests, nor ought we, but from our viewpoint a sound minerals industry is extremely important to the broader national goals of security and a healthy economy. US dependence on foreign sources for critical minerals, the increasing noncompetitiveness of some US mineral sectors, and the array of land use issues surrounding mineral-rich lands all have much more serious implications than many otherwise informed people seem to recognize.
