As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. "INTRODUCTION Contrary to popular belief, Arizona State Trust land is not public land. All uses of the land must benefit the Trust, a fact that is considered with the review of each application received for sale, lease, or permit. This includes applications for activities ranging from commercial development to recreation. In 1863, the Territory of Arizona was established by an act of Congress. This act reserved sections 16 and 36 in each township to be held in trust for the benefit of the common schools. Later, the Enabling Act of 1910 allowed the Territory of Arizona to prepare for statehood. This act reserved the additional sections 2 and 32 of each township for the common schools and granted another 2,350,000 acres to be held in trust for other beneficiaries. In all, Congress granted the State of Arizona almost 11 million acres. The State was to manage those lands and maximize revenue for 13 separate beneficiaries. To meet this mandate, the State established the Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) in 1915. During fiscal year 2015, the ASLD contributed $136 million to the permanent fund, bringing the total value to over $5.1 billion, through the sale and leasing of the land and natural products which includes minerals. The current inventory of State Trust lands includes 9.2 million acres representing about 12.7% of the State.The ASLD Minerals Section manages the exploration, development, and leasing of mineral products on State Trust land. We are not a regulatory agency, but a department guided by our fiduciary responsibilities to the Trust. Our mineral programs include: Exploration Permits, Mineral Leases, Mineral Material Leases, Geothermal Leases, Oil & Gas Leases, and Special Land Use Permits. The C. E. Weed concentrator treats 51,000 tons per day of 0.5% to 0.7% copper ore received from the Berkeley Pit, the Continental East Pit and the Butte underground mines. Improved operating techniques and conversion from semi-autogenous secondary grinding to ball milling have increased tonnage from an original design of 42,000 tpd. Separate treatment of sands and slimes, with recovery of soluble cop- per from the slimes, has increased total copper recovery. Concentrator tailings are pumped 600 vertical feet and 20,000 horizontal feet for disposal.

Reaction kinetics for gold dissolution in acid thiourea solutions were investigated using formamidine disulfide as an oxidant. For the conditions studied it appears that a surface reaction limits the rate of gold dissolution. The rate was found to be first order with respect to thiourea concentration and half order with respect to the concentration of formamidine disulfide; the apparent activation energy for the reaction was 10.40 kcal/mol (43.40 kJ/mol); and the reaction rate was independent of pH for the pH range 1.0 to 3.0.

The viscosities of various FeO-SiO2 slags were calculated using a previously developed structural-based model. Using hole theory and the atomic pair model, an expression was derived to relate the viscosity to temperature and the fraction of the bridging oxygen in silicate melts. The deduced equation was successfully applied to predict the viscosities of FeO-SiO2 slags in the composition range of 0.1 < XSi02 < 0.423 for several temperatures. The calculated data agree well with the experimental viscosity data.

YOPES 17.1.1--CURRENT The history of surface mining essentially is one of mining coal, copper, iron and aluminum ores, of placer mining gold and tin, and of pits and quarries producing clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. Table 17-1 is a summary of the estimated world and United States production of crude metallic and non¬metallic ores and coal in 1969. It includes estimates of the quantities produced by surface-mining methods. Two-thirds of the 10 billion tons are mined from the surface, ranging from a third of the coal. 57% of the metallic ores, and nearly all clays, stone, sand and gravel. Production by surface methods in the United States, parallels that of the world with one exception: about 90% of the copper and iron ore is mined from the surface, whereas elsewhere only about half the copper ore is surface mined. In Canada, surface mining of the Athabasca tar-sand deposits is a recent large-scale unique operation. Green algae taken from an acidic mine drainage and blue-green algae taken from an alkaline hot spring stream were collected and tested for their ability to recover or remove dilute metal ions. Experimental results demonstrated that unwashed blue-green algae and washed green algae effectively adsorbed base metals ions and eluted them at pH 1. It was also found that washed and dried algae adsorbed precious metal ions more effectively than unwashed algae. For example, the washed and dried blue-green algae was capable of adsorbing 0.31 kg of gold per kg of algae. The gold from tetrachloroaurate solution which was adsorbed on washed blue- green algae was found to change to a metallic state following initial metal binding. In the case of a dilute gold complex solution leached with thiourea, only a small amount of gold could be captured by algae. Further experiments were conducted on components of the algae, such as alginic acid, agar, cellulose and chitin and mixtures of these components, in order to determine their contribution to metal adsorption characteristics. However, a mixture of these two components demonstrated both good adsorption and desorption characteristics indicating an interaction between the individual components.

Impact and abrasion properties of various commercial US grinding halls were evaluated and compared by the Bureau of Mines, US Department of the Interior. Laboratory tests were conducted on balls obtained from eight major US manufacturers. The halls included forged steel, cast steel, and alloyed white cast iron and were subjected to repeated impacts until they broke or until 300,000 impacts were exceeded. Pin abrasion tests also were conducted. The results showed wide differences in impact lives, ranging from a few thousand to over 500,000 impacts. The life of inferior commercial halls was increased five to six times by a laboratory tempering heat treatment. For halls that did not break, the major impact wear mode was spalling and ranged from an average rate of 0.28 to 4.46 mg per impact. The softest halls (steel) had excellent impact resistance but low abrasion resistance. The abrasion resistance of the steel halls generally increased with hardness. The alloyed white cast irons had about twice the abrasion resistance of the steel halls. Users should become aware of the wide variations among commercial halls, and ball manufacturers should be aware that their product can he improved.

The dephosphorization of iron ore and reduction in Fe loss in process are currently the foremost technological challenges facing the mineral industry of Meishan Iron Ore. These problems can be resolved to a greater extent by an apatite flotation process which depends on selective flotation reagents. The primary objective of this research work is to develop new type of flotation collectors for dephosphorization of weak magnetic iron ore. Detailed discussion is given on the influence of collector dosage, pH, dispersants and pulp temperature on the flotability of apatite, siderite and hematite using the collectors of Oleyl sarcosinate(OSS), Alkyl polyoxyethylene ether phosphate (AEP) and the mixtures of OSS and AEP A key feature of the flotation was the use of the mixtures of OSS and AEP as a selective collector for phosphate. The effects of chemicals and operational variables on the phosphorus flotation from the weak magnetic iron ores have been investigated. The test results shows that floating the phosphorus minerals with new type collectors can reduce the phosphorous content in the flotation concentrate to an acceptable level of less than 0.20% P with increased Fe recovery.

The line seven, as part of the development of the Subway Master Plan in Mexico City, will tunnel under different subsoil conditions of clay with high water content and low shear resistance located between 8 and 12m beneath the surface. Boulders in silty sand and gravel to a 40m depth underlay this stratum. Economics, scheduled time of construction, and the obligated interconnection with existing lines one and two determined the construction of the tunnels to have an overburden of 1.0 to 2.2 times the diameter. In the north part of line seven there is a track of 251m length that was decided to attack with an open shield of 9.14m of diameter due to the characteristics of the sub-soil, minimum section needed as well as a minimal overburden, of 10.41m. The paper explains the construction procedure from the excavation stage to the reinforcement of the final lining obligated for the ground subsidence as a result of volumetric changes of a stratum of 4m thick of clay overlying the crown of the shield. Currently, there are several methodologies to assess ground vibrations from blasting. Of all available methodologies, one that is becoming more important is the waveform superposition or signature hole technique. This technique is based on a signature waveform assigned to each hole to build the complete waveform for the whole production blast, using the convolution between the time initiation sequence and the signature hole waveform. In the basic methodology of the signature hole technique, the waveform hole-to-hole is assumed to be the same. Several studies and field tests have proven that the waveform hole-to-hole, even in ideal rock mass conditions (rock mass with little or no joint system), changes. In addition to distance or confinement, other factors that could change the waveform hole-to-hole include different geologic paths from the source to the monitoring point and a different energy output of each hole, due to hole loading, explosive composition and/or contamination, priming, etc. These factors result in varying waveforms generated for each hole, making the waveform produced by each hole a somewhat random process. There is available in the literature some proposals to include variability in the waveform hole-to-hole, but the parameters involved are complex and difficult to estimate. In this paper, the variability in the signature waveform hole-to-hole in a blast event was recorded through a field test, and a proposal to include signature waveform variability to develop an equation based on the Fourier series is presented. This methodology is the basis for a future signature hole analysis using a Monte Carlo scheme, taking into account the variation of the amplitude and the frequency content of the waveform hole-to-hole in a production blast event.

Iron removal using biologically produced organic acids was investigated as a treatment option for the production of refractory grade bauxite. A leaching solution containing 98mM oxalic and 67mM citric acid was prepared from a sucrose medium using for fermentation the fungus Aspergillus niger. The leaching capacity of the metabolic product was tested on a bauxite sample containing 16-19% iron (as Fe2O3). Aerobic and anaerobic leaching tests were carried out at pH 3, 50°C and in the absence of light. Results indicated that more than 80% of total Fe can be removed from the ore, when the sample is finely ground and applying a two stage treatment. The presence of oxygen was seen to affect adversely the kinetics of the process, suggesting that leaching follows a reductive mechanism. Experiments that were carried out with different particle size fractions indicated that for obtaining efficient removal of iron particles should be finer than 0.63mm. Reduction of the operating temperature from 50 to 30°C caused a decrease in the rate of iron removal by more than 10 times.

A new method of slaking lime has been developed by DENVER EQUIPMENT DIVISION of Joy Industrial Equipment Company and patented under U. S. Patent 4,261,953. The new method utilizes an attrition machine, commonly used in mineral processing circuits as a sand scrubbing device, to slake lime. The scrubbing effect of the attrition slaker continuously produces a fresh reactive surface so that further slaking may occur. This process allows for utilization of slaking all grades of burnt lime and most grades of dolomite lime. Testing indicates that poor grades of water usually not considered for this service can now be tolerated using the attrition slaker. The slaked lime produced is of higher quality, faster reacting and much less apt to produce scaling problems than previously experienced. The attrition slaker can be combined with a spiral classifier and ball mill to eliminate any need for grit handling or grit removal. The attrition slaker can be designed for all burnt lime tonnages up to the limit of 175 tph and 1" pebble lime size. Control can be maintained easily with minimal operator assistance. The equipment, the principals of process metallurgy, and the above topics will be presented.

A commercially available portable X-ray spectrograph, lightweight and of rugged construction for vehicle or field camp use, was used for the determination of Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Rb, Sr, and Zn in stream sediment geo- chemical samples. Investigations showed a relative standard deviation of 1-3 percent, detection limits of approximately 100 ppm; and significant matrix effects. Coefficients of correlation greater than 0.9 were obtained between portable X-ray and emission and atomic- absorption spectroscopy analyses. A geochemical map of a known mineralized area showed good agreement with maps prepared by other methods of analysis and sample media.

Although lateritic deposits have long been a principal source of bauxite and are becoming an increasingly important source of nickel, the problems in the evaluation of such deposits are not generally understood. In the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits, there are many similarities, but there also. are significant differences. It has long been recognized that laterites with commercial concentrations of trivalent metals represent the ultimate in the intense leaching of tropical soils. Any factors which effect-the rate of soil leaching will effect the form of local lateritic concentrations. Although the most intense leaching generally occurs on somewhat elevated areas of gentle relief where there is a free downward flow of rain water, the- effect of local rock structures in effecting varia¬tions in soil metal concentrations has-not been well understood - primarily because the laterite forms a masking blanket over the rocks from which the laterites were derived. All of the-factors which facilitate downward movement of water may effect greater surficial concentrations of trivalent metals. Such features as zones of fracturing, zones of greater rock permeability, and areas of karst topography may, therefore, be responsible for greater leaching. "Chloride ions and their interactions with two organic smoothing additives – Cyquest® N-900 and HydroStar® 4208 – during copper electrodeposition were explored using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results revealed that chloride ions, up to a concentration of 40 mg/L, depolarized the copper deposition reaction. A combination of chloride ions and Cyquest N-900 inhibited the depolarization reaction during copper electrodeposition. It is proposed that the chloride ions acted as bridging ligands between copper and Cyquest N-900. Addition of HydroStar at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L depolarized the copper deposition reaction when no chloride ions were present. This behavior did not change with the addition of chloride ions at the concentrations tested, indicating that chloride ions and the polysaccharide do not interact.IntroductionElectrowinning is a major production method used to obtain high-purity copper. In modern tankhouses, copper is electrodeposited onto stainless steel blanks and then stripped, washed and bundled for delivery. Significant improvements in the quality of electrowon copper have been made over the last few decades. Additives, temperature, current density, electrolyte concentrations and agitation are known to influence the quality of copper electrodeposits (Jenkins and Eamon, 1990).The influence of chloride and organic additives on copper electrodeposition has been the subject of considerable research. The addition of small quantities of chloride and organic additives has been recognized to significantly improve the properties of copper electrodeposits. These additives are critical in the prevention of dendrite growth and the production of smooth, dense cathode deposits.Chloride ions have been reported to catalyze the copper reduction reaction and assist in the production of uniform deposits (Lakshmanan et al., 1977; Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Moreover, it is generally agreed that chloride ions depolarize the copper deposition process at low (several millimolar) chloride concentrations. This is because chloride ions catalyze the reduction of copper (II) ions to copper (I) ions (Cu2+ ? Cu+ + e-) in the rate-limiting step of this process (O’Keefe and Hurst, 1978; Ilgar and O’Keefe, 1997; Hebert, 2005; Shao, Pattanaik and Zangari, 2007)."

Mitchell Point Tunnel near Hood River, Oregon is one of the more unique segments of the Historic Columbia River Highway and State Trail being constructed through the Columbia River Gorge. This 650-foot bike/pedestrian tunnel set to open in 2024 is being delivered by FHWA in partnership with Oregon DOT, Oregon State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service. Primarily driven using drill & blast excavation methods through basalt, the shotcrete and dowel-supported tunnel features masonry portals and ve window adits that provide illumination and views of the river similar to the original highway tunnel of many vistas built in 1915 that was removed in 1966 to make way for Interstate 84. This paper summarizes the planning, design, and construction.

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for the highly mechanized PT. Freeport Indonesia&apos;s underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The deep ore zone (DOZ) is a coppergold deposit that is being developed underneath the current intermediate ore zone (IOZ) mine. One of the company&apos;s current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady ore flow of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) by 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

St. Marys Cement Company operates two cement plants in Southern Ontario, Canada. The original plant, located at St. Marys, a town 20 miles north of London, Ontario, began operations in 1912. A second plant, located at Bowmanville, Ontario, 40 miles north east of Toronto, began operations in 1967. In June 1973, St. Marys Cement began feasibility studies of modernizing their wet process plant at St. Marys. Over its 61 year life, this plant had been expanded from 335 m. tons per day (375 s. tons per day) to 2000 tpd (2200 s. tons per day), with all the original equipment retired several years ago. The objectives of the feasibility study were to develop a conceptual plan for a dry process plant and to de-, fine the appropriate process method and equipment. This study proceded along four fundamental fronts: a) How could the clay raw material, a glacial till with up to 20% boulder content, be processed in dry form and beneficiated? b) Were the raw materials suitable for the most efficient form of dry process kiln, the 4-stage preheater? If a 4-stage preheater kiln is selected should it utilize a precalciner? c) What type of clinker cooler should be used? d) What environmental constraints would be imposed on this plant and how can they be reconciled with capital and operating limitations? During the feasibility stage, pilot plant work was done on two possible solutions to the clay problem, operating plants in Europe were visited and discussions held with kiln and mill vendors.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year.
