In this study, a unique excavation system was characterized using waterjet technology as the primary tool for material removal during rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and shotcrete structural liners. Through empirical testing, this research seeks to validate the hypothesis that waterjet removal of these support systems will result in less unintended damage than conventional removal methods. The intent is to develop a viable technology that will reduce the collateral damage caused to surrounding liners during excavation, improve the adhesion between shotcrete and the substrate for longer lasting ground support, and improve overall safety for workers in underground environments. An analysis on the fracture mechanisms and operating parameters of each method was completed. Instrumented shotcrete panels were physically tested and examined through visual inspection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to compare substrate damage according to each testing method. After testing was completed, the data strongly indicate that waterjet cutting causes less collateral damage to the surrounding intact liner and substrate than conventional impact hammers. This research is intended to provide a scientific basis for additional applied research in the rapid excavation and repair of shotcrete support systems.

Investigation of the traps in LiF:Mg, a multi-peak phosphor, was carried out using simple phosphorescence decay analysis. Half lives at room temperature of the trapping centres (peaks -lb, -la, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3a and 3) in the phosphor after irradiation with [a] radiation were found to be 3 s, 5 s, 28 s, 4 min, 15 min, 1 h, 6 h and 2 d respectively. Justification for the method of analysis is pro- vided and the results of measurements compared with published data. The effects of pre-annealing at 400°C for 1 h and 80°C for 24 h on the trapping configuration and on the trapping efficiencies were also studied.

A field investigation was conducted by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center (PHTC), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to evaluate the effectiveness of a blowing face ventilation system utilizing a water sprayfan system and a single inlet flooded bed dust collector (scrubber) in controlling methane liberation in the face area while mining at brattice distances up to 12.2 meters (40 feet) from the face. The rated capacity of the scrubber was 117 m3/s (4,145 cfm) of air. Results from the investigation indicated a methane dilution capacity of 0.57 m3/s (20 cfm) with the air quantity behind the line brattice averaging 138.7 m3/s (4,900 cfm).

In Chile there are significant amounts of gold in flotation tailings that could be recovered, being heap leaching the most promising alternative. In order to determine the feasibility of treating these tailings by this method, a detailed study is carried out using 4 representative samples. After defining the best conditions an economic evaluation is done for a plant treating 200 tpd, sensibilizing with respect to parameters such us gold price, tailing grade and capital costs. The results show that it is technically feasible treat these gold tailings by heap leaching with gold extractions over 70 %. It is also economically feasible for gold grades higher than 0.5 g/t and gold prices over 350 US/oz.

Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

This paper describes the Darwin Silver Recovery project, located 66 km (40 miles) outside of Lone Pine, near Darwin, Inyo County, California. A lead-zinc mine and a flotation concentrator were operated there from 1945 to 1957. By the time the mine was shut down, 1.53 Tg (1.69 million short tons) of tailings had been stored in ponds. An average silver assay of 47 mg/kg (1.38 troy oz/st) of tailings stimulated interest for commercial silver recovery. A heap leach process was developed in 1981 at the Tucson Research Center of Anaconda Minerals Company, a division of Atlantic Richfield Company. Agglomeration techniques were used on the ore since the fine grind did not allow direct heap leaching. Lime and cement were required as binders, Early laboratory tests showed that recoveries equal to those from an agitated leach could be achieved at lower capital and operating costs. Laboratory tests determined cyanide requirements, lime and cement usages, and percolation or leach rates, as well as confirming that a zinc precipitation step could recover the silver from the leach solution.

It is said that Thales of Miletus, 600 B.C.,1 was aware of the attraction of lodestone toward iron and highly magnetic minerals. However, the birth of magnetic concentration followed shortly after the invention of the first electromagnet by Sturgeon in 1825. Sturgeon's magnet was described in the annals of electricity.2 The first attempts to concentrate minerals by the use of magnets date back to about 18473 but the first commercial drum-concentrator was apparently invented by R. Cook in 1849. Credit must also be given to the invention of P. Righter's machine in 1867,5 and to the highly successful Wenström separator devised in Sweden in 1883.8 Since the advent of these early separators there have been virtually hundreds of patents granted covering minor modifications of drum-type magnetic separators. The more important advances from a technological viewpoint have been the design of stable power supplies for d.c. magnets, the advent of ceramic permanent magnets which are now replacing electromagnets for the concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, and advances in general magnet and machine configurations.7 One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.8 Brown measures the radial component of the field intensity one-half inch from the drum surface and fits a Fourier series in the angle about the drum axis (Figure 1). "According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires in nine states. This is considered to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards (Richmond, 2017).Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled, can burn for years and, in fact, one of the most wellknown mine fires in the United States is the mine fire in the Borough of Centralia, PA, that began on May 27, 1962. Reportedly, officials decided to clean up the local landfill for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday by burning the garbage on the site. Unfortunately, the landfill was located on the site of an abandoned strip-pit mine on the edge of the Borough (Dekok, 2009). The strip pit had been left open after being excavated around 1935 and was approximately 23 m (75 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) deep. It is believed that the lack of a properly constructed noncombustible shale barrier in the strip pit enabled the fire to spread to adjacent carbonaceous refuse material and then to nearby coal mine workings (PA DEP, 2017). As time went on, the fire grew and spread under the Borough and directly affected the residents despite various efforts to extinguish the fire by the state and federal governments (Fig.1). In 1984, a voluntary program was begun to move residents from their homes. Many accepted buyout offers for their properties and moved elsewhere and after leaving, their homes were demolished. In 1992, the state used eminent domain to take control of all the property within the Borough. In 2013, after years of litigation, the eight remaining residents were allowed to stay for as long as they lived. Today, only a few buildings remain within the Borough (Centralia, PA, 2014). This fire has been burning for more than 55 years."

With passage of the Federal coal' Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, many challenges have been directed to the industry's mining and safety engineers. The most critical challenge is that of ventilation. The language concerning ventilation in many sections of the Act could very well deprive or limit the mining engineer in planning the ventilation for new mines, since the Act requires federal approval of all ventilation plans. Dependent upon approval and of course application of the law, this could, due to economics, prohibit the opening of new mines in some cases. Petitions for modification of some mandatory standards relating to ventilation have already been filed under Section 301(c). It is quite possible that many of these standards may be modified.

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyoming, was completed on July 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 Mm 3/d (12 Mft3/d) of 6.9 MJ/m3 gas (175 Btu/ft 3 ). Approximately 6100 tonne (6700 ton) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, cold gas - thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89 percent, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74 percent were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-1974.

In this study, FLAC3D modeling was conducted for ground-structure stability assessment for a pilot tunnel passing under a large shaft excavated in the vicinity of existing structures at Karangahape Station for the City Rail Link Project in Auckland, New Zealand. The analysis involved generation of the geometries and construction sequences in Rhinoceros®, modeling the existing ground condition, calibration of the simulated in situ conditions with the observed behavior of the ground, and excavation of the shaft and the pilot tunnel. A comprehensive interpretation of the results was then performed accompanied by comparison of the predicted behavior with the observed response of the ground during construction.

Over the past decade, the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry's injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked and injury rate. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992-2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. However, the industry-wide data indicates that contractor and operator injury rates have converged since 2005 and are now equivalent. Mining Engineering, 2011, Vol. 63, No. 11, pp. 73-79. A Mineração da Trindade (Samitri) is a major Brazilian iron ore producer. Founded in 1939, privately owned Samitri operates six mines with a total production capacity of 14.5 Mt/a (16 million stpy). The mines are located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais. They are operating in the iron ore quadrangle, Brazil's primary iron ore-producing region. In addition to iron ore production, Samitri has the capability to produce 350 kt/a (386,000 stpy) of ferruginous manganese ore from two mines, also located in the iron ore quadrangle. Historically, about 70% of Samitri's production of lump ore, sinter feed and pellet feed is exported. Destinations include Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, China, Turkey and the United States. Alegria Mine In September 1989, Samitri started a new processing plant to treat itabirite, a low-grade iron ore. The goal of the plant was to produce sinter feed (coarse fraction) and pellet feed (fine fraction). Primary separation of sinter feed from pellet feed was accomplished with conventional vibrating screens making a 0.4-mm (40-mesh) cut. The screen oversize was stockpiled as sinter feed. The undersize was deslimed with hydrocyclones and upgraded by conventional froth flotation. Resulting pellet feed grades ranged from 3% to 3.5% Si02. A change in pellet feed requirements by Samarco Mineração SA, a Samitri subsidiary, called for Si02 levels below 1 % and increased production levels. Moreover, market demands called for a change in sinter feed size distributions. Unfortunately, lower pellet feed Si02 levels could not be achieved with the existing process. This was because of the presence of 35% +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed. Flowsheet development. Laboratory and pilot-plant studies conducted at Samitri's research facility found that to achieve lower Si02 levels, the +0.15 mm (+100 mesh) in flotation feed must be kept below 5% to 10%.

Someone once said, "The safest mine is one in which no one goes into." We all recognize this as being perhaps wishful thinking. We also recognize in it a certain amount of truth and an ultimate goal if we are optimistic. All of us are aware of the many things that have been done, are being done and will be done to reduce manpower in mining. For those of us; who are optimistic about this ultimate goal it would appear from the records-we are more than well on our way to the so called safest mine. Let us see what has been done in the past 20 years. T e period from 1935 to 1956. For example in the coal mining industry: In 1935 there were employed 462,903 men who produced an average of 805 tons per man per year or 4.50 tons per man per day. In 1955 there were employed 225,093 men who produced an average of 2,064 tons per man per year or 9.84 tons per man per day. There are no comparable figures compiled for the metal mining industry as a whole that can be broken down in this manner. However, from examination of figures available for different groups in metal mining there is a trend similar to that in coal mining. No-dbout the above figures reflect the intense development and perfection of machines and mining systems to tear out, transport and process our mineral wealth. The figures also show the mining industry has been able to double its production and at the same time reduce its manpower by half. When you compare the number of men employed today with the number which would have been employed 20 years ago to gain todays production at that time it become apparent that greater safety has been accomplished. For example the years 1935 to 1956 for all mining show. In 1935 there were approximately 649,226 men employed in mining and reports show 1,399 fatalities and 74,913 non-fatal injuries. In 1955 when there were 313,883 men employed in mining 496 fatalities and 25,365 non-fatal injuries were reported. To have produced the same tonnage of material in 1935 that was produced in 1955 it would have required the employment of approximately 1,298,452 men. 2,798 could have been fatalities and 149,826 could have had non-fatal injuries. You can now measure the full impact of what has been accomplished in the past 2o years by the aggressiveness of mine management, the wizardry of our engineering personnel and the thoughtfulness and devotion of our safety people and their programs. Therefore, there is a trend towards the goal of our opening statement. We whoare toptimistic believe this trend will accelerate at a-faster pace. Why? Because anyone engaged in the mining industry today can well afford to invest a minimum of $30,000.00 in capital equipment todisplace the labor of one man. This fact alone is a terrific incentive for mine management to apply and manufacturers to develop equipment of a type to get the men out of the mine. Now you can determine this problem not only becomes one of safety but also one of economics, When productivity is stepped up and manpower reduced management is learning the hard way what it means to them; in the profit and los s column when a few minutes of delay or downtime of costly machines and processes occur. They have learned that fast and efficient communication systems are the best means of combating breakdown, delays, bottlenecks, supply problems, the saving of lives and property and increasing production. One large western metal mine was able to increase Its tonnage by 4000 tons a day by using modernup to date electronic type communication system. The National Coal Board of Great Britain recently allocated 45,000,000.00 to study and develop faster and more efficient communications when a survey indicated what a serious bottleneck poor communication in their present systems of mining turned' out Lobe.

Personnel at Utah Copper Division's Bingham Canyon Mine use current computing technology to compile pertinent production statistics and mining plans. Within hours after the day's work has been completed, concise reports summarizing the previous day's production statistics, actual production vs. budget statistics, the location of shovels relevant to the mining plan, the performance of equipment, equipment next scheduled for maintenance, etc. are available at the terminals located throughout the mine. Also, engineering personnel us e computerized systems, directly from their offices, to assist them in the timely development of mining plans. Timely and concise reporting and planning capabilities such as these assist mine personnel in their efforts to review mining progress and equipment performance, and as such they are in a better position to detect adverse trends early and to seek appropriate resources or make changes in plans or practices.

Locus Mining is working side-by-side with a prestigious iron ore company to evaluate the addition of Locus ESG-friendly green flotation reagents with the primary goal of improving recovery and grade. In this paper, we will focus on the cationic reverse flotation application. The most “established industry” reagents for cationic reverse flotation are amine as the collector, starch as the depressant, and in some cases frothers are also used (among them MIBC, pine oil, others). Here, we evaluate the synergies of different classes of eco-friendly biosurfactants and industry-standard reagents during the cationic reverse flotation method. Exploratory research was done first with an analog sample under different pHs, eight different biosurfactants with starch and no-starch, and a customized DOE was used to perform 145 microflotation tests. The results show Separation Efficiency from 20% (baseline) to 50% (biosurfactant), and Selectivity from 3.27 (baseline) to 5.67 (biosurfactant). Optimized result conditions were then applied to the iron ore samples received from our client to perform flotation tests on a Denver Lab cell. Similar results were obtained by improving Separation Efficiency and Selectivity, which corroborate with the previous work.

There is sufficient indication of the existence of a basic misconception in the Coal Mining industry (on a world-wide basis) as to what computer control really does, what it costs, how it works and how and what it achieves as to make this presentation a welcome opportunity to present the case in what we hope is a simple, meaningful way. A plant cannot be said to be "automated" unless the control system has the capability to react automatically in accordance with predetermined programs under a great multiplicity of operational situations.

The $528 million Toledo Waterways Initiative (TWI) was implemented by the City of Toledo in 2002 and completed in August 2020. Toledo is one of many US cities required to implement a Long-Term Control Plan (LTCP) but one of few to have completed its plan. TWI consists of three storage and conveyance tunnels, four below grade storage basins ranging from 4 to 36 million gallons (MG), miles of sewer separation and interceptor improvements, green infrastructure and other appurtenant structures to dramatically reduce combined sewer overflows to the Maumee River, Ottawa River and Swan Creek. All three rivers flow into Lake Erie. The City’s 180-year history as a Midwest shipping, manufacturing and transportation hub provided design engineers and contractors no shortage of unknown underground challenges to complete the projects. The City will begin its 5-year Post-Construction Compliance Monitoring in 2021 to satisfy the final LTCP requirement. A program overview and experience from tunnel and underground basin construction in urban areas with buried active and legacy infrastructure will be discussed.

Remarks of Aurel Goodwin, Chief, Division of Health, Metal and Nonmetal Mine Safety and Health, Mine Safety and fEealth Administration, U. S. Department of Labor, before the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME, Littleton, Colorado, on October 18, 1979. I appreciate this opportunity to speak before the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME. The topic of my presentation is the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA) concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals - the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals which possess a fiber like structure capable of being woven, like and into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps made about 430 B.C. with incombustible wicks of "Carpathian flax." The Romans used asbestos as cremation clothes to conserve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (1). Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Bath wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages.

The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.
