Introduction The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. Second, the classification system would allow the mining engineer to record falls routinely with little time and effort expended. This would encourage him to make observations concerning what type of roof support would work best in a given situation. Third, and probably most important, an adequate roof fall classification system is the first step toward developing a means of predicting the occurrence and extent of future falls. It was with these three reasons in mind that the following classification system was developed. The type of classification chosen reflects the background of the developer and the intended purposes of the system. Hylbert has proposed a geologic-based classification which groups falls as to structural and compositional origin. The need for similar systems is noted by Cox and by Ferm and Melton. Each of these researchers is confronted with a situation requiring a relationship between local geology and roof fall occurrence. Such a relationship would allow the prediction of the relative frequency of falls from a knowledge of local geologic features. The current research is aimed at fulfilling somewhat different requirements, as noted above. Fall geometry has been chosen as the basis of the classification system so fall type can be reported independent of local geological, environmental, and tectonic conditions. A common decision in openpit mining is to determine the extraction sequence of notional three-dimensional production blocks so as to maximize the net present value of the extracted orebody, while adhering to precedence and operational resource constraints. This openpit block sequencing (OPBS) problem is commonly formulated as an integer program, with binary variables representing if and when each block is extracted. In practical applications, the number of blocks can be large and the time horizon can be long; therefore, instances of this problem can be difficult to solve using the exact approach of optimization. The problem is even more challenging to solve when it includes explicit minimum operational resource constraints. Our maximum value feasible pit (MVFP) algorithm generates an initial integer feasible solution for OPBS problems, in which minimum operational resource constraints are strictly enforced. As an exact approach, we present a Tailored Lagrangian Relaxation (TLR), in which the selection of constraints to dualize is guided by information provided by the MVFP algorithm. We present results and graphics to demonstrate the utility of our techniques for instances containing up to 25,000 blocks and 10 time periods.

Artificial intelligence has emerged over the past two decades as an important problem-solving tool including techniques such as expert systems, neural networks, tree classification, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, etc. These methods can be employed to solve rock mechanics and ground control problems associated with the highly complex nature of rock masses and ground conditions. A current study at the University of Alabama focuses on development of an artificial intelligence system for real-time interpretation of the data collected from longwall monitoring stations, and development of an early warning system for prediction of undesired conditions and prevention of longwall-mine instability problems. This paper describes a ground control management system using UALSAS (The University of Alabama Longwall Stability Analysis System), which is being developed to facilitate maintenance, on-line analysis, prediction, and includes an early warning system. A detailed framework of computer algorithms and their applications are also discussed. The successful application of these artificial intelligence techniques will contribute to a safer and healthier mining environment.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke, and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale Fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL) in Fairchance, PA, using Ponderosa Pine, Red Oak, Douglas-fir, high and low volatile coals, PVC and SBR conveyor belt, No. 2 diesel fuel, and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector, and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations, and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (1). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters? Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

The C&NW Ore Dock at Escanaba, Michigan, is a major terminal on Lake Michigan for iron ore pellets arriving from the Marquette Iron Range located 112 km (70 miles) to the north. In an average year, the terminal handles in excess of 8 000 000 Mg (LT) of iron ore pellets consigned to a number of major steel companies. It is important to the steel companies for both cost control and operating efficiency that each cargo be sampled as accurately as possible in order to determine the physical and chemical properties of the pellets. This paper describes the equipment and operating procedures of the sampling facility and Presents some sampling data.

The Millenbach copper-zinc orebody is an ideal Canadian example of a stratabound base metal deposit in volcanic rocks. The mine, operated by Lake Dufault Divison, Falconbridge Copper Ltd. is located five miles north of the city of Noranda in northwestern Quebec. The deposit occurs within an Archean volcanic sequence which forms part of regional acidic volcanic center within the Abitibi greenstone belt. Preproduction ore reserves totalled 2,075,000 tons grading 3.5% copper, 3.6% zinc, 1.1 ounces per ton silver, and 0.02 ounces per ton gold. Stratabound lenses of massive sulphides together with underlying stringer sulphides are closely associated with a dome of quartz-feldspar porphyritic rhyolite approximately 3000 feet below surface. The paper describes the presently known geology of the deposit and includes documentation of sulphide mineralogy and textures as well as sulphide/ host rock relationships. The stratigraphy, petrography and chemistry of the volcanic host rocks are described with emphasis on the alteration intimately associated with the sulphide bodies. Although the volcanic stratigraphy is complex within the mine area, the presence of only low-grade metamorphism and the relative lack of structural deformation allow detailed interpretation of geological history. Presently recognized evidence strongly suggests that the sulphides were deposited at and near sea-floor, by hydrothermal solutions. The dome of porphyritic rhyolite appears to have been the most significant factor controlling sulphide localization.

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project's inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely-spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an ore body block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

Studies of sedimentary humic acids by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), stable isotopes, and elemental analysis show they are derived by oxidative degradation of complex plant macromolecules that are insoluble in aqueous or organic solvents. The mechanism by which humic acids originate is fundamental to our understanding of the role of organic matter in ore deposition, because these substances can complex and mobilize a number of metal ions. The organic matter associated with uranium ores of the San Juan Basin, New Mexico and Carlin-type disseminated gold deposits of Nevada has certain organic geochemical characteristics that suggest an origin from humic acids.

In the United States there are approximately 155 established operating plants located in 37 states, extending from coast to coast. Silica, in varying degrees of chemical purity, enjoys a very diversified market. Silica is the basic ingredient of glass, bothcontainer and flat glass, and is used for grinding and polishing of flat glass up to the final polishing stages where rouge is generally used. Silica is used for foundry molds and cores, sandblasting, stone cutting, refractories, placing sand in furances, glass coatings and linings, laboratory glassware, construction, oil well fracturing for increased oil flow, filtering purposes, silicate of soda, silicon carbide, and others.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth that evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) the relative effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) the performance of three different cab pressure monitoring devices. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range of 0.3 to 1 µm particle size, and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static (closed-door) conditions, the filtration unit offered a gravimetric calculated protection factor between 10 and 31, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The monthly particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor nearly five times that of the ? > 99 filter, where n = 15 samples. The booth pressure monitors were tested and proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. IntroductionDesigned and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from noise and physical hazards, such as flying rock and debris, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity (Organiscak et al., 2016). While it is easy to quantify the operation of a cab’s air-conditioning unit by measuring the temperature, or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it is somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards.The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside the enclosed cabs of mobile equipment, resulting in the mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems (Organiscak and Cecala, 2008). The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms (Noll, Cecala and Hummer, 2015). While stationary enclosures are similar to mobile cabs, the work area can be significantly larger. Workers in booths and control rooms also tend to stay within the enclosure for a greater percentage of the day as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who enter and exit frequently."

Rockfall hazards are ubiquitous in mining environments making their control critical for safe mining operations. The complex processes involved in rockfall events necessitate a probabilistic modeling approach with well-calibrated material properties. The controls designed to mitigate rockfall hazards need to be reliable, efficient, and safe to deploy to meet the constraints present at an active mine. This paper presents an innovative solution to rockfall at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine. The solution incorporates the site-specific calibration and creation of a predictive rockfall model with the design, field testing, implementation, and monitoring of the rockfall controls.

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize biomass productivity, the influence of reclamation practices on biomass production must be well understood, which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass estimations and, also, the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, experimental biomass production plots on reclaimed mine sites established in Wise County, VA, are used for a comparative study of satellite spectral derivatives, which are evaluated against groundbased biomass estimates. Metrics based on four spectral derivatives, band ratios and spectral transforms were regressed against biomass measured in situ for different species. The results demonstrate that greenness and principal component 2 (PC2) were more efficient than the other spectral derivatives for monitoring the biomass of this reclaimed area. Also, it is shown that Landsat-5 TM has provided promising results for monitoring of the biomass changes occurring from 2008 to 2010 over the study area.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. RAs typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that these valves vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: (1) a modified polyvinyl chloride check valve, (2) an off-the-shelf brass/cast-iron butterfly check valve and (3) a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel prefabricated RAs and had been adapted for use in one mine operator’s built-in-place RA. PRVs used in tent-style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, regulations. The commercially available relief valve did not meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification but may meet the manufacturer’s specification. Alternative valve designs were modified to meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification, but all valve designs will need further design research to examine survivability in the event of a 103 kPa (15.0 psi) impulse overpressure during a disaster. BackgroundThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, known as the Miner Act (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006), was enacted in the wake of three mine accidents involving explosions or fire that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the Miner Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning; adoption of new technology; training and education; and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the Miner Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the U.S. Department of Labor to act on the results of such research, as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, mining health and safety regulations (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008), requiring underground coal mines to supply mine emergency RAs and associated components so as to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either selfcontained mobile units or built-in-place facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the approval of RAs and their components by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), among which are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere is the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008)."

"INTRODUCTION While the United States coal mining uses prescriptive regulation under the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulation enforced by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Australia uses a risk based approach. Australian regulation is individual to each state. In Queensland, Australia this risk based approach to address principal hazards is underwritten by the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act of 1999 and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation of 2001. Each Queensland Mine is required to have an overarching Health Safety and Environment Management System, of which Safety Management Plans are an element. “Safety Management plans (SMP’s) are intended to formalise the process by which mines address principal hazards and other related matters to ensure the safety of mine personnel.”7 THE QUEENSLAND CONTEXT In Queensland, the basic elements of a coal mine’s safety and health management system must provide for risk identification and assessment, hazard analysis, hazard management and control, and the reporting and recording of relevant safety and health information and data.5 (Part 2 Division 1 Section 6(a-d)) The initial guidance for writing Safety Management Plans comes from the Approved Standard for Mine Safety Management Plans and Guidance Note QGN09- Reviewing the Effectiveness of Safety and Health Management Systems. The Guidance Note and Approved Standard are supplemental to the Act and Regulation, and put in place to provide more clarity around the topic. The definitions in this section come from the Approved Standard and are included to provide context for those who may not be familiar with Australian or Queensland law and regulation. A hazard is defined as a source of potential harm or a situation with a potential to cause loss, while a principal hazard is a hazard with a potential to cause multiple fatalities. A risk is the chance of something happening that will have an impact upon objectives which is measured in terms of consequences and likelihoods. It is important to be able to make the distinction between a hazard and a risk. For instance, a lion is a hazard, while the risk associated with a lion is getting eaten. As defined by the Queensland Approved Standard for Mine Safety Management Plans, a Safety Management Plan (SMP) requires a systematic definition of all the actions necessary to ensure that mining operations are carried out safely. A SMP includes, but is not limited to organisational structures, planning, activities, responsibilities, practices, risk identification, audits and reviews.7 The goal of a SMP management plans is to mitigate the risks to bring them to an As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) level."

This study is a survey of the current "state-of-the-art" of commercially-available sonar tools to monitor the true shape of man-made cavities within the Hutchinson Salt of south-central Kansas. The work entailed ferreting out the available information, most of which is proprietary in nature; then examining actual existing conditions and arriving at a reasonable scientific evaluation of the method. Our studies were confined to one LPG field and two brine well operations in south-central Kansas. No field testing of any devices was performed, only questioning user firms, and studying cores, logs, and sonar surveys graciously made available by the companies we have contacted. Since these data are still somewhat proprietary, the company participants have asked that their company names be omitted from this presentation.

The use of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) in most of the operations in byproduct molybdenum flotation comes with safety concerns and, in some instances, a high reagent cost. Engineered solutions at the various operations where NaHS is used have immensely reduced the possibility of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas evolution. However, the threat of exposure remains, and this, coupled with the high dosages of NaHS consumed, supports the continued search for alternative depressants. This paper focuses on efforts to study the applicability of disodium carboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (DCMT), an organic depressant, as an alternative to NaHS. Bench-scale rougher flotation results for samples from the Sierrita copper–molybdenum (Cu–Mo) plant showed the best DCMT performance at 8 kg/t of DCMT, pH 10.5, 30 min of shear conditioning and 10 min of flotation conditioning. The Aminpro plant model simulation confirmed that 4 to 8 kg/t DCMT under certain shearing and conditioning times achieved superior or equivalent Mo–Cu separation efficiencies when compared\ to NaHS.
