Scope of Section The physical characterization of an ore or mineral mixture in such detail that mineral processing may be effectively applied to create more useful products is one part of the technology of sampling and testing. In addition, the evaluation of the multitude of separation processes, both physical and chemical, combined with ancillary opera¬tions and performed on samples at a laboratory scale, is another part of the testing procedure. Although analytical techniques provid¬ing quantitative determinations of elemental compositions are an im¬portant and necessary supplement to any testing program, that field of endeavor is a well-developed, separate entity beyond the scope of this Section. Sampling procedures cover the practice of selecting representative quantities of test materials in the field to evaluate mineral deposits, and extend to techniques of obtaining process samples in slurry and bulk ore as part of process evaluation. The same techniques are appli¬cable, of course, to standardized methods of metallurgical accounting. Sampling is also an important facet of successful on-line measurement of slurry properties such as assays and particle size in the practice of automation. However, the sampling methods in this case can be different from those needed for precise testing and accounting pur¬poses. Sampling was well defined in Taggart's Handbook as "the opera¬tion of removing a part convenient in size for testing, from a whole which is of much greater bulk, in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested (e.g., specific gravity, metal content, recoverability) are the same in both the whole and the part removed (SAMPLE). The conditions of the more stringent definition, that the sample shall be completely representative of the whole as regards all aspects save bulk, are practically never fulfilled when heterogenous mineral mixtures are sampled." Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing, Section 19, "Sampling and Testing," continues to be a very useful compendium of principles and techniques, particularly as applied to manual methods for han¬dling samples. In the intervening years since its last revision, substan¬tial progress has been made in both the theory and the techniques; thus, this current contribution is designed to be an extension of the earlier work, yet complete enough to provide procedural guidelines to methods of continuing validity. Although basic principles of testing remain unchanged, the meth¬ods of applying those principles have undergone great change. New testing equipment has become available, yielding a greater precision of results. Testing methods have been refined which, in many cases, allows for a valid scale up of flowsheet designs without the necessity of costly pilot or prototype plant development. Justification for a Sampling and Testing Program* The proper evaluation of a mineral property is a complicated process. It often is done on a team basis with the exploration geologist, mining engineer, mineral process engineer (extractive metallurgist), economist, and product utilizer (ceramist, chemical engineer, chemist, metallurgist, etc.) all represented. The mineral processing engineer is a key member because he can provide a go no-go answer to the question, "Can this ore be processed economically?" In addition, his judgment on the response of even the initial sample to processing can be an invaluable guide to the proposed process and its mutations. Since the capital investment and operating costs are so sensitive to the type of process used, the judgment of the mineral processing engineer forms an important part of the early evaluation of the profitability of a new mining venture. This early estimation of the processing approach is all the more important since, for some metalliferous ores, the capital investment for mill, smelter, water supply, and tailings disposal exceeds the cost of the mine. At present, for commodities such as coal, the reverse is true. There is a smaller capital investment for the coal preparation plant than for the mine. In general, both the capital and operating costs escalate very rapidly in the following order: gravity concentration of alluvial deposits (e.g., dredging), gravity concentration of lode ores, flotation, simple hydrometallurgical processes, and complicated hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The latter two processes may cost 100 to 1,000 times more per ton treated than processing of a simple alluvial deposit. This dictates that the valuable mineral be concentrated as much as possible to minimize the total tonnage treated in the more expensive operations. Within each of these ore-processing categories there is a wide range of process sophistication and hence of capital and operating costs. Perhaps the greatest variations are in the chemical processing of ores. These range from the simple leaching of a copper waste dump to very sophisticated hydrometallurgical processing of ores in increasing order of cost. Because the overall cost of a mining venture is so sensitive to the process selected, it is essential that the mineral¬ processing engineer evaluate the ore in the initial stages of the development of an ore body. As better samples become available, he must continually revise his estimate of the process to be employed. The sampling and testing process must be a necessary and continuing activity throughout the life of a project. One fundamental aspect of nearly all mineral deposits is the inherent variability of the mineral assemblage and composition. A utopian goal of any processing plant is to have the process so flexible and so well-defined that an automatic process control system can optimize the economic recovery at all times. Since this is rarely possible, a continuing or at least a periodic testing program is desirable. Variables to be considered are: 1) Ore body inconsistencies. 2) Zonal variations. 3) Feed variations from mining plan or methods. 4) Variable performance of processing units due to wear. 5) Seasonal or other changes affecting processing conditions such as water quality, temperature, etc. 6) Changing market conditions for product quality or byproducts. 7) Technological advances in processing methods or equipment. 8) Increasing demands for environmental control. 9) Changing economics of competitive processes, of supplies, of capital investment vs. labor costs, etc. Sampling Procedures Preliminary Guidelines for Sampling Ore Deposit Studies. t At a very early stage, it is essential that the mineral processing engineer receive a sample of the ore. This may be a portion of the diamond drill core or a split from the trench, pit, churn drill, channel, or sheet sample. Even a grab sample may have some value, but it should be selected by the mining engineer or exploration geologist to be as representative of the ore body as possible within his best judgment. The sample delivered to the process engineer should have been subjected to as little prior crushing as is practical since fine sizes are difficult to concentrate. In addition, finely ground ores are readily oxidized and thus may give misleading test results. Furthermore, ground samples may make it impossible to eval¬uate either the comminution or the coarse-gravity concentration pro¬cesses. For an initial evaluation, a good deal may often be learned from a sample of only a few pounds if that is all that is available. To obtain the maximum information from a sample, its selection should be carefully discussed with the mineral processing engineer. In addi¬tion to being as representative as possible, the mineralogically distinct samples should be carefully segregated rather than composited. Since drastically different processes are often needed to process samples of differing mineralogy, considerable care and time must be exercised during this sample collection step. The segregation of samples showing gross mineralogical differences, such as the oxide caping on a sulfide deposit or a laterized zone, is easy. It is the more subtle changes in mineralogy that can often elude the field man. Yet these differences are often sufficient to dictate that an entirely different type of process be used. Obviously, the selection of these initial samples for ore testing and mineralogical studies requires that it be done by a man of consider¬able experience and judgment. While the mining engineer or field geologist is collecting these samples, he should also note and convey to the processing engineer such details as water quality and availabil¬ity, terrain, potential mill location, tailings-disposal areas, case of transportation, etc. As the property is developed with additional drill holes, adits, etc., larger and more representative samples will be required to develop the ore-processing flowsheet more adequately. If pilot-plant studies are required, a very large sample may be necessary. Though the type and amount of sample collected for flowsheet development investigations vary widely, gathering a representative sample of the ore body is a prime requisite for any process development effort. Waste solutions from sea water desalination processes are enriched in minerals by a factor of two or three. This suggests that extraction of selected mineral components from the concentrated brine might help pay desalination costs. The possible recovery of gold has received particular mention. Sonstadt, in 1872, reported the gold content of sea water as 65,000 micrograms per cubic meter, or 65,000 parts per trillion. At $35 an ounce, this is equivalent to $0.065 per ton of sea water. Fritz Haber, however, after his abortive venture to restore Post War I Germany to economic health by recovering gold from the sea, concluded the gold content was 4 micrograms per cubic meter. Haber's analysis is equivalent to 0.0004 cent per ton. In the past 10 years, investigators using advanced analytical techniques reported from 4 to 27 micrograms per cubic meter. Our brief experiments to determine a threshhold value for the gold in sea water employed solvent extraction for initial concentration, evaporation of the gold-loaded organic for further concentration, and atomic absorption analysis of the gold in the concentrated organic. Radioactive gold was used as a tracer for monitoring the gold through the concentration and analytical steps. Our method established that sea water contains about 11 parts gold per trillion parts sea water, or 0.001 cent worth per ton. This agrees closely with results of recent studies by other investigators employing ion exchange resins and neutron activation techniques.

Back injuries arising from such activities as lifting and handling objects have been and continue to be constant and undiminishing hazards of the occupational environment. Back pain in one form or another is experienced by almost a1 1 individuals. During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, it has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. The human spine remains the most vulnerable area of the muscul o-skeleta1 system. Back injuries account for about 400,000, or 18 percent, of all disabling work related injuries each year according to the National Safety Council estimates. These serious back injuries are estimated to have cost more than 1.9 billion dollars in 1976 in medical and lost time pay. 1

Thiourea is being applied as an industrial leaching agent for gold and silver only in a few cases. A CIP technique was developed which eliminates most of the obstacles against its use. Mild conditions for precious metals stripping from the loaded carbon simplifies process conditions in comparison to cyanide CIP technique. Examples are given.

During the past year a number of significant advances in geostatistics have been published. These were presented at the 13th APCOM Symposium in Clausthal, Germany and at a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Geostatistics in Rome, Italy. Of greatest importance is the work that has been done in establishing methods which correctly predict the cutoff grade-tonnage curves, and the average grade of ore-tonnage curves for deposits in which ore and waste are intermingled. Grade-tonnage curves based on estimates made from widely spaced exploration data have been found to underestimate the grade of ore and overestimate the tonnage present. This problem has been remedied by the calculation of conditional probability distributions for the unknown grade of a block. Another advance has been made in the field of geostatistical estimation for deposits in which a trend is present. Previously a technique known as universal kriging has been used, which involves much subjective judgement as to the trend fitted. A new technique, generalized increments, allows computer estimation of such deposits with much less subjective judgement. Computational efficiency of geostatistical methods has continued to improve to a point where a geostatistical estimate can be obtained for little more than the cost of any other computerized method.

Under drastically deteriorated situations, diesel equipment was introduced to some of local coal mines, aiming at higher productivity and better safety. To accommodate various diesel equipment in conventionally developed mines, mining system itself had to be modified; much larger trackless haulage ways were excavated. Possible health hazards of diesel not taken into account at the beginning become a serious concern and effective control measures are being searched for. The purpose of this paper is to study the diffusion characteristics of diesel exhaust in local coal mines. One of the parameters affecting dispersion of diesel contaminants is the coefficient of turbulent diffusion. Since CO2 is known to be closely correlated with other contaminants such as CO, NO, NQ, SO2 and RCD, it was chosen as a tracer gas in a series of dispersion experiments. A large diesel passage as well as a conventional track haulage way were the sites for the experiments. Rectangular dispersion pulses were generated for 30 ~60 seconds and CO2 concentrations were recorded at several locations 50~190 m downwind. The diffusion coefficients calculated graphically vary between 0.10~0.48 m2/s at both haulage ways. The results are analyzed to find any correlation with the air velocity and the distance from the disperser. The use of chemical reagents in flotation has been studied in great detail, e.g. (1, 2, 3, 4). Important progress has been made on the understanding of surface chemistry concepts involved in flotation. However, such scientific studies are often very complex even for rather simple idealized systems. Therefore, the deve- lopment of predictive or quantitative tools for plant engineering evaluation is still in the evolutionary stages. Until further progress in fundamental work is achieved, the operating engineer is faced with semi-empirical physical testing of reagent changes on several sizes of the actual equipment under study to be confident of the economic viability of any change.

Investigations were undertaken to improve the recovery of silver from CRA's Hidden Valley gold/silver deposit by the addition of calcium peroxide. The addition of 0.75 to 1.5 kg/mt of calcium peroxide improved silver extraction by 5 - 300 and reduced cyanide consumption by up to 30%. Gold extraction was also marginally improved in some of the tests. The results are of economic interest and plant trials will be initiated once operations are underway.

A new class of thionocarbamates, O-alkyl-N-allyl thionocarbamate (III), has been found to give better metallurgy than 0-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (I) for a number of sulfide ores containing copper, lead, and zinc. Data on the results of flotation tests with several such ores are presented. The improved metallurgy is believed to be due to the participation of the allyl double bond in the complex formation of the thionocarbamate on the surface of the mineral.

Asgco’s design of the Arrowhead Ceramic Lagging provides solutions to problems experienced with conveyor belt slippage around the drive pulley and severe wear problems on snub and bend pulleys. Asgco has developed a range of pulley lagging from ceramic, drive rubber and non-drive rubber lagging that is available in abrasion-resistant SBR and MSHA grade rubber for conveyor pulleys from slow belts all the way through to high-speed, high load belts. There is a growing need for a maintenance-free and reliable pulley lagging to ensure conveyor belts run to their highest efficiency.

The Indiana Limestone Company has developed an insulated, thin and comparatively light-weight pane 1 suitable for use as a spandrel panel in a curtain wall. The panel is about four inches thick and is composed of limestone backed with insulation. The inner surface of the insulation is protected with asbestos-cement board or a metal pan, depending on the type of insulation, building-code requirements and appearance (if the surface is left exposed). The limestone is cut to the size of the spandrel openings and the insulation and backup is applied in the mill ready to be shipped and in- stalled in the wall grid, A mortarless and waterproof joint with the metal frame components is achieved through the use of neoprene, thiokol, and caulking, The limestone is "dirt-proofed" (waterproofed) in the mill to slow down discoloration. The panel weighs more than some presently used materials. However, ILCO's architects and engineers have found that curtain wall systems capable of withstanding imposed wind loads are made up of sections large enough to carry this extra load of stone with little or no modification to the size of the metal frame. Limestone, a traditionally sound material, can be used in this new way without losing any of its natural qualities of dimensional stability, resistance to fire, and permanence.

Phelps Dodge’s Candelaria copper-gold mine is located 20 km (12miles) south of Copiapó in northern Chile’s Atacama province (Region III) (Fig. 1). The Candelaria Mine is about 800 km (500miles) north of Santiago and 75 km (47 miles) east of the Pacific Ocean. Its elevation is 600 m (1,970 ft) above sea level. The Copiapó River Valley is 6 km (4 miles) northeast of the mine site. It is the only major source of water in this arid region. The average rainfall is 14mm/a (0.5 in./year). During 1995, the mine produced 521.4 kt (574,800 st) of copper concentrate containing 150 kt (165,000 st) of salable copper and 3 t (98,800 oz) of gold. The 1995 unit cash cost was less than 50 cents/lb of copper. This makes Candelaria one the world’s lowest cost copper producers.

Some 30 years ago Stevenson (1940) underscored the fact that most of the world's molybdenite production came from the Cordillera that comprise the western part of North America, and that the northern extension of the Cordillera into British Columbia is not essentially dissimilar to the United States section. Therefore, in view of the successful development of molybdenite resources in the United States, he concluded that prospecting in the Canadian section f the Cordillera should be encouraged. However, as recently as seven years ago Schneider (1963) remarks that no large economic deposits have been brought into production in British Columbia, although one important property was being evaluated. World production f molybdenum ore was sporadic until 1900. Among the very early producing areas in North America were Arizona and New Mexico in the United States. World War I provided the stimulus that brought the Climax deposit into production, and in 1920 Questa, New Mexico followed, although the ore came from fissure vein deposits at that time. In the early part f this century high grade deposits in various parts f the world containing 5-20 percent MoS2 were exploited. In Canada most production during World War I came from Quebec and Ontario. With the build-up of world tension and the inception f hostilities in 1939, British demand was satisfied by United States producers (Schneider, 1963).

Powered dust-filtering helmets (dust helmets) have become increasingly prevalent in the underground mine environment in recent years. Many longwall operations use dust helmets to reduce the respirable dust exposures of miners required to work downwind of crusher, roof support and shearer operations. While continuous mining sections are usually less dusty, use of diesel equipment represents a new potential health problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently conducted a study to determine the efficiency of a dust helmet on diesel-size particulate. Two underground evaluations were conducted on continuous mining sections that were using diesel haulage vehicles. Model No. AH21 Racal airstream helmets equipped with AS22-3 prefilters, AS23-3 main filters and AS60476 tyvek full-face seals were tested. Helmets were placed on mannequin heads and mounted in the ram car cabs. Andersen Model 298 (eight-stage) personal cascade impactors were used to sample air inside and outside of the helmet. Impactor stages 8 and the final filters were analyzed to determine submicrometer (0 - 0.93 µm) particle concentrations. Results from this study showed that the dust helmet was 94% (± 3% at 95% confidence level) efficient on submicrometer particles. Typically, very little coal dust is observed in the submicrometer size range, therefore, these particles were assumed to be from diesel exhaust. Results from this study indicate that proper use of the dust helmet on continuous mining sections that are using diesel haulage vehicles may be beneficial to the health of miners.

Significant lost time delays were experienced by Carbonifera de Nueva Rosita, S.A. de C.V. ("CNR") during mining development of the Pasta de Conchos Mine ("the Mine") near Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico. Furthermore, methane gas concentration in the return air course had exceeded 1.0 percent. Resource Enterprises, Inc. ("REI") was contracted by CNR to recommend an approach to reduce methane emissions at the Mine. In order to recommend a degasification approach, REI and CNR obtained geologic and reservoir characteristics of the Double coal seam, Olmos Formation. A vertical core hole was drilled to obtain core samples to determine gas content (average 8.4 cm3/gm) and to conduct a slug test to estimate permeability (34 md). This information was used to simulate gas productivity and drainage effectiveness. The simulation indicated that underground horizontal boreholes would remove significant quantities of gas in advance of mining in a reasonable period of time. Based on the results of the simulation study, an underground degasification drilling program was initiated at the Mine. In a six month period, five long in-mine degasification boreholes were drilled in advance of CNR's three to five years mining projections. Peak gas production from the five boreholes (approximately 2,750 cumulative meters) had exceeded 45,000 m3/D. Results to date have indicated a general reduction in methane concentration in the return air course below 0.8 percent.

Agglomeration by balling in cylindrical or shallow pan devices dates back to the early part of this century. The first sintering tests conducted by Dwight-Lloyd on nonferrous ores included a mixing step for ore, flux and fuel carried out in a deep pan device similar to the balling pans, or discs, presently in use. Further work directed mainly toward sintering of ferrous and nonferrous ores always included a preparatory step, usually referred to as mixing, agglomerating or green-balling of the ingredients. In the late forties and early fifties two methods of particle preparation prior to firing were in general use. In Europe the balling pan was used predominantly, both as a mixer and as a pelletizer. In the United States many pilot plants and semi¬commercial plants used balling drums. When the first iron ore pelletizing plants were built in this country, the most frequently used device for green-balling was the cylindrical drum. At the same time, the pan device was used both in Europe and the United States for many other materials such as fertilizer, cement, flyash, alumina and copper concentrates, as well as to mix the feed for sinter machines. The difference between these two balling devices - -the drum and the disc - has been the subject of much discussion and is well covered by several papers included in the 1962 publication "Agglomeration' issued by AIMS, based on their 1961 International Symposium held in Philadelphia. The filtration and dewatering results of -32 mesh Pittsburgh seam coal are discussed with reference to the microscopic structure parameters, i.e., particle segregation in the cake and particle and pore size distributions at different layers. At low solid concentration of 0.33 kg coal/kg water, a non-uniform cake structure is observed in which the particle and pore sizes increase from the top to bottom layers in the filter cake. An increase in the solid concentration in slurry produces more uniform cake structure and higher filtration and dewatering rates. Air bubble entrapment in the coal filter cakes is also discussed.

Success of The Carter Mining Company's safety program can be primarily attributed to "total immersion" of all operating and staff personnel in program design and implementation. Currently, the Company operates two surface coal mines in Campbell County, Wyoming. Total employment is about 440 and current annual production is about 15 million tons. The safety program has evolved from one which was administered primarily by staff personnel (the Safety Department) to one which requires active participation by line management and operating personnel. Lost time accident frequencies have declined from a high of 1.86 per 200K hours worked in 1978 to zero in 1982. Reportable accident frequencies have declined from slightly over 5 to slightly over 2 during the same period. Analysis of program results indicates that the most important achievement by the company has been to gain strong commitment to safe operation by all employees. It is important that program format and content be frequently changed and modified so that: 1) The requirement for safe job performance is communicated well and often, 2) The safe job performance message is trans- mitted in new and interesting ways, and 3) Operating personnel participate in design and implementation of the program.

Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) was used to determine the-surface characteristics of products from operating Pb-Zn-Cu concentrators on the New Lead Belt of southeast Missouri and pure galena and sphalerite samples treated-with flotation reagents in concentrations similar to those used in the mills. The emphasis was on the action of surface modifiers such as Na2Cr207, starch, SO2, CuSO4 and NaCN in sphalerite flotation and in the galena-chalcopyrite separation. The objective of the investigation was to monitor the relative oxidation states of the mineral and reagent constituents and correlate these surface concentrations and oxidation states with flotation theory and practice. ESCA was able to follow the action of all the modifiers except NaCN. The existence of PbCrO4 on the surface of galena conditioned with Na2Cr207 was verified. The Pb in the bulk PbS-CuFeS2 scavenger concentrate was found to be significantly more oxidized than the Pb in the bulk PbS-CuFeS2 rougher concentrate. ESCA was found to be most useful for investigating the actions of modifiers rather than collectors due to the large amounts of sulfur and background carbon already present on the mineral surfaces. After calibration for the particular chemical system of interest, ESCA can yield semi-quantitative analyses of the oxidation states of many elements (except hydrogen, and helium) present in the outer 10 to 25 A of a sulfide mineral surface.

Phosphate mining and beneficiation in the State of Florida are presently being carried on by 12 different mining companies with a total of 21 mining and flotation plant locations. Their combined production of both washer rock and flotation concentrate was approximately 28,000,000 long tons in 1968. This accounted for 70-72% of the total U. S. production and close to 30% of the world's output of this mineral. From this extensive activity in the Florida phosphate field, one basic flow sheet for beneficiation of the ore has developed over the years as the most commonly employed. In fact, all of these plants with the exception of two beneficiate Florida pebble phosphate using a basic operation as illustrated in Figure I. The two plants which differ from this general approach are not using raw matrix as feed. In one instance, +14 mesh pebble is ground in a rod mill to release free silica which is subsequently removed in a cationic froth flotation circuit using an amine acetate blend and kerosene. This technique generally results in a 4-7 BPL unit upgrading of the feed pebble. The other exception to the standard flow sheet illustrated in Figure I is an operation which is beneficiating tailing piles. In this case, the material is first subjected to cationic froth flotation in order to upgrade the feed to a point comparable to normal matrix. Thereafter, after, the phosphate is floated in an anionic rougher circuit followed by cationic flotation of the silica in a cleaner circuit.
