To clarify what r mean about this long title, I would like to define the term technology. A standard definition of the word "technology" is "a technical method of achieving a practical purpose". Incidently, another definition of the term is merely "technical language". The same dictionary defines the word "technology" as "having a special, usually practical, knowledge of mechanical or scientific subject." Naturally, the practical purpose of the subject with which we are concerned is solving of problems we encounter in the mining industry. I might further describe the subject of this discourse by defining the term "manager". An old definition, "one who dispenses the duties of his position with care and economy." In line with the above definition most of the technology with which we in the mining industry are confronted with deals with some form of cost reduction. This may be related to the speed of doing an operation or to saving of labor or supply costs. These can be improvements of an existing method or the result of new processes or inventions, such as new machinery.

Chemisorbed oleate films on the surfaces of fluorite, barite, and calcite were studied by means of infrared spectrophotometry. Evidence is presented which indicates the mineral anions, i.e., fluoride, sulfate, and carbonate, are displaced from the mineral surfaces as a result of the adsorption from aqueous solutions. Also, chemisorption reactions between oleic acid and fluorite or calcite occurred spontaneously in the absence of water. Carbon dioxide was identified as a reaction product when dry calcite was contacted with oleic acid. There was no evidence of reaction between oleic acid and barite in the absence of water.

Utah Power and Light Company's Deer Creek Mine had been developed to a point where mine ventilation efficiency had declined to an unacceptable level. Problems identified were ventilation of inactive areas, excessive leakage, and restrictions in the return and intake air ways. Mine management implemented an intensive mine ventilation improvement program to alleviate future problems with respirable dust in the working sections and diesel equipment emissions. Program objectives included sealing of inactive areas of the mine, rehabilitation of high resistance areas, and construction of additional intake and return aircourses. Applications of computer modeling techniques are used to predict the effects of ventilation changes and improvements. Improvements are then prioritized to achieve the largest efficiency increases first. Actual real time assessment of the mine environment and ventilation changes are accomplished with a mine wide monitoring computer system. The Deer Creek ventilation improvement program has more than doubled the ventilating efficiency of the mine.

The coal industry in South Africa is briefly outlined. Test- work carried out on bulk samples of coal in the laboratory and used in the design of the Van Dyks Drift washery are described. Factors affecting the selection of equipment and the designed capacity of the plant are discussed. A description of the crushing plant, washery and load out section is given together with performance data obtained in the final acceptance tests. New features incorporated in the Van Dyks Drift plant and in more recent plants of the Group are outlined.

Phosphate rock is a naturally occurring mineral which, in upgraded form, is important to both agriculture and industry. Phosphate rock normally must be upgraded before it can be assimilated and used. Most of this upgrading is now carried out by chemical means, largely through the reaction of a strong inorganic acid (primarily sulfuric acid) with the phosphate rock to remove major impurities and to produce soluble phosphate. A less important but yet still commercially significant conversion method involves the thermal reduction of phosphate rock at high temperature in an electric furnace to produce elemental phosphorus. The elemental phosphorus is then converted to usable end products. This conversion route is a more costly method than the chemical route, but it has the advantage of being able to produce chemically pure phosphorus derivatives. On the other hand, the use of phosphate rock for agricultural application-primarily for use as a plant nutrient ingredient for fertilizer -does not require the same level of purity. As a consequence, the chemical method of phosphate rock upgrading is the predominant technique for producing phosphatic fertilizers.

Diatomite deposits, the skeletal remains of tiny aquatic plants called diatoms, are found in many parts of the world. Only a few of these de- posits are of commercial value. Open pit mining is used in nearly all deposits now being worked. Processing methods range from simple drying, crushing, sizing and packaging to carefully controlled and highly sophisticated calcining and air classification procedures, employing the latest control and testing techniques. The major uses of processed diatomite are in filtration as filter aids and fillers and extenders.

A marine sonic sub-bottom profiling system and a hovercraft were used in an engineering geophysics survey of the tailings being deposited at the Mercur gold mine. Detailed density sections with vertical resolution of one meter were desired for computations of strength, permeability and potential self-compaction. The logistical problems of conducting a geophysical survey and in collection of geotechnical soil samples from an active tailing impoundment was solved by using the amphibious hovercraft for towing and transport on the impoundment. The "chirp" sonic system produced continuous, real-time geophysical cross-sections with vertical resolution of ten centimeters showing possible trapped gas. The hovercraft provided a platform over water, ice, slurry, and solid beach for collection of geotechnical information and physical samples.

Neves Corvo Mine employs four mining and four backfill methods, including paste fill. The paper shows how the strength requirement for backfill in primary stopes was calculated and the relationship between laboratory strength and in situ strength requirement. The liquefaction of paste in secondary stopes is discussed with methods to determine the liquefaction potential. It was found from laboratory tests and the preliminary results of the underground trial, that the liquefaction potential of the paste is low at 2% and is high at 0.5% cement. The results to date are inconclusive regarding 1% cement.

The material composition of product is defined as the quantity of metal used per unit of product manufactured during a year. This ratio measures the efficiency of converting a ray material into final products. The material composition of product has shown steady and persistent declines over time for most metals and materials. This tendency demonstrates the continued improvements in manufacturing technology, resulting from substitutions of other materials and improvements in production efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to study trends in the material composition of product to reveal the impact of advanced materials on the use of traditional metals.

Meramec Mining Company is a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp. which mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge Mine. The Pea Ridge property is located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drilling in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the orebody was mineable, Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Production commenced in April 1964. The orebody is overlain by about 1300 feet of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick. It dips about 80° and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 150 foot intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the orebody on 190 foot centers. Banks of scopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modified shrinkage stoping method. This was done by undercutting a 40 foot wide by 150 foot long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 5 foot intervals. A 65 foot still was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fingers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a ?lattice? of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar recovery program was necessary.

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. The mining industry is an easy target for criticism from an environmentally sensitive society. Recent researches discovered that human activities, including mining. cannot be blamed for all of the pollution observed on earth. Interdisciplinary research is providing diagnostic and remedial solutions to problems such as acid mine drainage and cyanide-polluted streams. Researchers have also found that mercury-bearing hot springs and volcanic eruptions are partly responsible for some pollution. Geochemists, mining geologists, engineers, and environmental scientists can pool their efforts to make the environment cleaner and safer. Remote sensing of the environment and the use of microbes may become much more popular in the near future in the mining-environment arena.

The presence and orientations of fractures and discontinuities in rock masses exposed in a surface mining excavation are likely to have a great influence on both slope stability and blasting efficiencies. The classification of rock materials requires detailed investigations which are of interest to the design engineer. In designing a safe mining excavation, an engineer must take a number of decisions regarding face support and orientation based on the evalu¬ation of local strength and structural conditions encountered. The description of rock masses requires information additional to the properties of the rock material, discontinuities and other characteristics of engineering importance. Such information involves the acquisition of the following data: The description of the rock mass with reference to major geological structures. The orientation, nature, spacing and persistence of discontinuities. Degree of weathering. A critical review of rock mass classification systems and their application to surface mine excavation design and stability analysis is presented. The field investigation techniques for collecting rock mass data are described together with the techniques of analysis and presentation of data. Laboratory tests are carried out to determine intact rock strengths and deformation parameters of rock. The paper presents two case studies from the British hard rock surface mining industry to illustrate the application of the rock mass classification systems to stability analysis and excavation design.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of three operating cave mines at the Grasberg mine complex. The DMLZ is situated in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS). It is set 500 m below the operating DOZ mine and located approximately 1,500 m below the surface, making it one of the world’s deepest panel caving operations. Initial undercutting of the DMLZ commenced in the second half of 2015 and has expanded to more than 120,000 m2. High pre-mining stresses and the changes associated with caving, combined with a strong and brittle rock mass, led to significant seismicity and rock bursting. Stress and seismic management are the main challenges for the operation and have evolved significantly from initial undercutting to the present. Considerable amounts of empirical data associated with ground response have been collected, evaluated and combined with historical lessons learned from the Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) and Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mines, which are located within the EESS. This has provided an improved understanding of how the various geological, geotechnical and mine design criteria relate to one another. Additionally, the information has allowed for the development and implementation of improved strategies for stress and seismic management in the DMLZ. This paper describes how these learnings have driven changes in mine geometry, layout, and support systems. Through comprehensive monitoring and detailed inspections, positive changes have been seen in the ground response, leading to an increase in footprint reliability and accelerated cave growth. The paper summarizes the key learnings at the DMLZ regarding stress and seismic management as well as the positive improvements towards sustained and safe caving operations in the DMLZ.

Open pit blasting can be a low cost routine or a high cost bottleneck depending on geology, environment and the operator's ability to master site conditions. Because blasting is a repetitive operation, there should be ample opportunity to optimize the process; but ordinarily this optimization is rarely achieved and then only if conditions remain consistent and predictable. Often, however, and particularly with porphyry coppers, hidden differences in rock characteristics nullify the operator's best efforts. At a porphyry copper deposit being mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, there are all of the following rock types: oxidized and fresh porphyry, altered and silicified limestone, explosion breccia, rhyolite, sandstone, shale and several others. The units can cover large areas or be limited to a few tens of feet in maximum dimension. They are rarely visible on the bench surface and often do not show up in the bench slope. Even though the blastability of these rocks varies substantially, a generally-uniform blasting pattern was formerly used with disappointing results. Secondary blasting was often required and high bottoms occurred frequently; overblasting wasted drilling time, and explosives caused excessive throw. Several possible methods for improving the blast design were considered and a geophysical method was chosen for testing. There had been reports in the journals that seismic methods were being used in Europe as aids for blasting design. A literature search turned up work by Haxby 1/ on use of a refraction seismograph for measuring pit bench rock strength. Using his work as a springboard, equipment was purchased and a program was planned and carried out for developing, evaluating and implementing the seismic method for routine mine use. The expansion in gold production in the Carlin 'Trend over the last few years has been one of staggering proportion. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the Mine Engineering group at Newmont Gold. This paper discusses the organizational changes implemented to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems and how the Newmont Gold Mine Engineering group dealt with these problems. Specially developed computer software and their applications will be explained. Improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves, and in scheduling the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities, as well as ore control procedures are presented. Current mine engineering practices are discussed.

In an approach to the complicated study of bauxite from Les Baux de Provence it is necessary to consider the paleogeographical context of all the bauxites in southern France. These bauxites are of Karstic type, belonging to a metallogenic area extending from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Alpine Massif. Within this area each deposit does not always correspond to the same geological period. There are differing opinions regarding the origin of Karstic-type bauxite and a discussion of these various theories is beyond the scope of this paper. Bauxite of Les Baux, in Provence, was discovered in 1821 by the chemist, Berthier, near this picturesque village located in the region of Arles. It is Les Baux from which the name of bauxite originates. For a long time this bauxite was of no interest because of high silica 'and mediocre alumina content. Besides, the calcium carbonate content is somewhat high and is one of the main characteristics of Les Baux bauxite. The problem of exploration of the Les Baux deposit has been to prospect minable zones according to traditional norms where silica and carbonate are low.

A description is given of an experimental ventilation control system designed, built, and tested by WVU under United States Bureau of Mines sponsorship. A description is given of the control, system used and the mine-wide microcomputer-based ventilation monitoring system used with it. Test results of experiments conducted with this system at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Federal No. 2 underground coal mine are presented. In addition, a brief description is given of a new microprocessor based system presently being tested.

"INTRODUCTION Since the introduction, several decades ago, of the first concepts of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), the unremitting increase of mechanized and automated tasks and the reduction of manual tasks carried out by human operators have gone hand in hand with the continuous improvement of these machines. In the present state of TBMs, the replacement of worn cutting tools is a critical, tedious, and dangerous manual operation especially for earth pressure balanced (EPB) and slurry TBMs. For such pressurized TBMs, hyperbaric interventions are used. They consist in replacing the pressurized soil/mud inside the chamber with compressed air that balances the face pressure. The operators can then ""dive"" into the chamber; however, because the human body cannot naturally undergo pressure changes, they have to follow strict procedures that have been developed for subsea divers, based on decompression stops. Indeed such interventions are actually quite often performed by professional deep-sea divers. The pressurized TBMS are consequently equipped with a manlock that allows for the required compression and decompression cycles. Hyperbaric interventions increase risk to the operators and require long decompression procedures that increase the TBM idle time and reduce its efficiency. At higher pressures, over 3.5 bar (ITA Report No 10, 2011), specific equipment and special gas mixes and/or saturation techniques are recommended (Lamont, 2012). Such procedures are even more expensive and time consuming although the duration of work in the pressurized area can be very limited for health and safety reasons. Contractors are therefore increasingly interested in automating these operations to reduce the risks to human workers and improve the TBMs performance. Moreover, the demand for new, ambitious and challenging tunneling projects (very deep, high pressure boring) is ever increasing, but the supply of suitable TBMs is limited and the risk from working in the hyperbaric environments becomes increasingly unacceptable. Impact of hyperbaric interventions The UK Health & Safety Executive has analyzed the consequences of working in intermediate pressure compressed air. The retrospective study of decompression illness (DCI) indicated that at certain pressures its incidence was around 2% of all exposures. More worryingly it showed that over 20% of the exposures commonly undertaken by shift workers in tunneling (those over 1 bar pressure for 4 hours or more) resulted in DCI. It was concluded that on some contracts up to 50% of shift production workers experienced DCI at some time during the contract, a situation which was considered to be wholly unacceptable (Lamont, 2006)."
