The Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System has been designed with safe production and cost savings in mind. Large open pit mines around the world have been installing semi-mobile crushers and linking them with a pit conveyor system to lower unit cost. At Morenci two 60/89 in. gyratory crushers are incorporated into the semi-mobile crushing plants. The ore is reduced to -8 in. and transported out of the mine on a 60 in. steel cable belt. This paper includes an overview of the Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System from the drawing board to open pit installation and finally a discussion on operating and repair considerations.

During my College days in Mexico City, my Mineralogy Professor used to say "Mexico is the Horn of Plenty, rich in minerals, and it is easier to say which minerals are not found instead of stating all that exist. He said that the only ones missing are bauxite, diamonds and titanium ores." Today, twenty years later, a rutile mine in Oaxaca is in successful operation. Mexico has an area of approximately two million square kilometers, with volcanic activity, large shores and mountainous areas reaching as high as 6,000 meters above sea level. These conditions are favourable for most mineral deposits, some -of commercial value and others as a source of mineral samples only. (fig. No.1) In addition to vast mineral wealth, Mexico has -another valuable asset in .his people. Even before the discovery of America, natives were successfully mining metals, and during the Colonial --days, the mineral deposits were mined to increase the wealth of Spain, and it increased the --knowledge of mining. All this experience was passed along from generation to generation, and created a tradition of mining and minerals processing engineers, that currently account for approximately 182,000 persons supported by mining related activities.

The separation process called solvent sublation for the removal of two hydrophobic compounds (penta-and tri-chlorophenols) from the aqueous phase is discussed. A steady state mathematical model for the process is discussed. The process was conducted in a continuous countercurrent mode. The underlying mechanisms, theory and experimental details on the effects of process variables on removal efficiency are reported.

Microscopic gold inclusions in sulfide minerals cannot typically be extracted by conventional cyanidation. The gold ore must be pretreated to oxidize sulfide minerals associated with gold and to remove other minerals and chemical compounds that interfere in the cyanidation leaching process. The recovery of gold from refractory sulfidic-carbonaceous ores after roasting pretreatment was studied. With the addition of an oxygen-containing gas (e.g., air or oxygen-enriched air), sulfides of iron, zinc. copper and other metals are tramformed into solid oxides or sulfates and gaseous sulfur dioxide at elevated temperatures (e.g., 400° to 800°C). When the sulfides are oxidized, individual particles lose internal volume and become porous, allowing leaching solutions access to the gold. The structural characteristics of the calcine have a strong influence on the eventual recovery of gold by cyanidation. These characteristics are strongly dependent on the roasting conditions and roasting method. The optimum combination of particle size, roasting temperature, reaction time and oxygen concentration in the off-gas was determined for a typical refractory sulfidic-carbonaceous ore from the Carlin Trend in Nevada. The tests were run using a 150-mm laboratory rotating tube furnace and 160- and 200-mm.fluid-bed pilot roasters. Laboratory results indicated that the maximum gold extraction was 92%, with the head and the leach residue containing 5.7 and 0.4 g/t (0.166 and 0.013 oz/st) Au, respectively. The maximum extraction was achieved under the following roasting conditions: a top particle size of 150 yin, a residence time of 2 hrs, a roasting temperature of 475°C and with 40% oxygen (by volume) in the off-gas. Similar results were obtained from circulating fluid bed (CFB) pilot-plant testing. The maximum gold extraction was 90%, with the head and leach residue containing of 5.1 and 0.5 g/t (0. 149 and 0.015 oz/st) Au, respective) v. These results were achieved with the same particle size and oxygen concentration as in the laboratory testing but with the roasting temperature of 500 ° to 525°C and a residence time of 30 min.

Competition between Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and non-iron-oxidizing heterotrophic bacteria was induced by the addition of glucose to a co-culture of T. ferrooxidans and A. acidophilum in an oxygen-limited environment. Iron oxidation was inhibited as dissolved oxygen was used preferentially for glucose metabolism. Furthermore, as the water became anoxic, glucose was consumed along with the oxidized iron species (Fe3+) during iron respiration resulting in a pH increase from 2.0 to 4.0. Results suggest that biologically mediated acidification of drainage water can be reversed by dispersion of an easy to degrade, soluble, and inexpensive carbon source such as glucose into the subsurface.

"INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process nominal 1.2 x 0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm. A drill system configuration capable of working in the arctic offshore environment was developed to evaluate the placer gold resources contained in the glacio-fluvial sediments offshore Nome, Alaska. This system is capable of working on the shore fast ice during the winter months and is deployed on a drill ship during the summer. Transfer of the drill between its summer and winter configurations is accomplished with a minimum of modification to the design. The system is designed around the Becker drill. This percussive, reverse circulation drill is capable of penetrating the indurated glacial sediments present in the offshore Nome environment. This drill has operated effectively to depths in excess of 50 m (164 ft) below sea level. Since early 1987, in excess of 2000 holes have been drilled using the system. The drill system often operates in extreme weather conditions. It has averaged approximately 10 holes a day of drill production. The ore reserves defined during these drilling programs have resulted in the recovery of more than 70,000 oz (2.18 t) of gold to date, by the mining vessel Bima.

Seals for man-made penetrations into or nearby nuclear waste repositories require several unique capabilities not common to seals for conventional underground activities. Design criteria include long functional use, extremely low permeabilities of the seal zone (including adjacent disturbed rock), and the potential for retarding radionuclide travel. This paper summarizes comprehensive seal programs being conducted by D&apos;Appolonia for the Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation (ONWI) at Battelle, Columbus. The program schedule requires the first detailed conceptual design for a bedded salt site to be completed in 1982. Conceptual designs for other host media will follow as site exploration data becomes available. The design program is supported by a variety of office, laboratory, and field activities being conducted by ONWI subcontractors. An example is provided to illustrate the variety of efforts directed toward determining the extent of disturbance adjacent to penetrations as a result of in-situ and excavation methods. Also, the current "working design" for the shaft and tunnel seal system at the candidate Los Medanos thick salt site in southeastern New Mexico is presented.

Introduction A longwall mining demonstration currently in progress in the Herrin (No.6) Coal Member near Benton, Illinois, involves the extraction of three adjacent panels by the longwall method. The first panel was completed in May, 1977. The Illinois State Geological Survey is involved in this project for two reasons: (1) to detail the geology of the roof and relate the geologic features to the behavior of the roof during mining operations, and (2) to study the nature and occurrence of coal balls (carbonate petrifactions of peat) encountered during this demonstration. General Geology of Area The stratigraphic sequence of beds immediately above the No. 6 Coal in this area, ranging from oldest to youngest, is: gray shale (Energy Shale Member), black carbonaceous shale (Anna Shale Member), and argillaceous limestone (Brereton Limestone Member) (figure 1). In some areas of the mine, where one of these units may rest directly on the coal, one or more of the members is absent from the stratigraphic sequence. The nature of roof for the area is shown in figure 2. It is greatly exaggerated in the vertical direction. The Walshville Channel, 11.3 km west of this mine, was a river at least in part deposited at the same time as the coal. The gray shale wedge on top of the coal, which thins away from the channel, is thought to represent an overbank deposit of mud from the channel. The next layer deposited on top of the gray shale, and on the coal not covered by gray shale, is the black carbonaceous shale, believed to represent a mud deposited in a brackish environment. The overall success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining is dependent upon many factors. The major factor is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions both environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three major categories: 1) Geometric Conditions --machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity, among others; 2) Physical Conditions--material properties, rock strengths, diggability, driving surfaces, among others; 3) Chemical Conditions --acid/base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden, among others. This paper incorporates these conditions through conceptually modeling compliance oriented contour mining methods; in particular Haulback methods, utilizing: 1) the Front-End Loader (FEL)/Truck; 2) Tractor Scrapers; and 3) Combined FEL-Truck/Scraper. Engineering analyses including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces), drainage requirements and many others can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in-situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views, but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

A methodology is presented for the spreadsheet solution of processing networks performing separations with the methodology developed here a spreadsheet grid is used to represent networks with and without recycle loops. In this manner, network solutions are numerically approximated by spreadsheet grid solutions. The methodology was used to explore the ramification networks developed by the Chinese for tungsten and molybdenum processing. Non-linear stage transfer functions for two-component sharp separations can be used.

On January 5, 2012, the Mine Safety and Health Administration ordered the closure of the Silver Shaft, the primary underground access to Hecla?s Lucky Friday Mine, for removal of built up backfill material that accumulated over time on the shaft walls and furnishings. Lucky Friday and Cementation USA personnel worked quickly to identify the most effective means to get the mine back into production. The team developed a fast-track procurement and refurbishment plan utilizing shaft sinking winches, headframe modifications, a partial shaft sinking Galloway, and modified cages to not only complete clean-off of buildup, but also replace pipe brackets, shaft steel, and power and communications cables as needed in the 1,860 m (6,100 ft) deep shaft within 14 months.

Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.

Environmental regulation in Mexico has matured dramatically and effectively in the last decade. The gap between environmental regulation in the United States and Mexico is rapidly narrowing, so much so that it is no longer necessarily less burdensome to operate in Mexico from a regulatory perspective. This paper is intended to give a general overview of the system of environmental regulation in Mexico. The actual application of Mexican laws and regulations governing the environment to a specific operation will require a much more detailed review of the applicable environmental standards.

Traditionally Australia has been a leader in underground mining methods with world standards being established at Mount Isa, Broken Hill, Kalgoorlie, and Mount Lyell. With decline in higher-grade reserves and discovery of a multitude of near-surface oxide gold de-posits attention has shifted to bulk mining of low-grade gold ores by open pit methods, heap leaching and activated carbon recovery of gold values. The paper examines historical change in mining philosophy and the economic effects of isolation.

"One of the major problems discussed over the last years is a possibility of mining of seafloor massive sulfide deposits. In spite of the pessimistic points of view on their commercial development, they are still of great interest and continue to be studied (Hannington et al., 2011). Recently, Barriga (2012) paid special attention to the underestimated amount of massive sulfide hydrothermal fields and pointed to the importance of the buried fields and subseafloor mineralization.This study examines the geochemistry of seafloor and subseafloor precipitates collected at the Peterburgskoe (19°52´ N) and Irinovskoe (13°20´ N) hydrothermal fields (MAR) during the 34th cruise of the R/V Professor Logatchev in 2011. These fields were discovered by the Polar Marine Geosurvey Expedition in 2010 and 2011, respectively (Shilov et al., 2011; Beltenev et al., 2012). The Peterburgskoe field, associated with basalts, is located 16 km west of the main rift valley at the depth of 2800-3100 m at the junction of a large non-transform discontinuity with the second rift ridge parallel to the rift valley. The Irinovskoe field occurs at depths of 2700-2850 m and has a northwestern satellite sulfide site, both confined to an oceanic core complex (MacLeod et al., 2009), which includes mafic and ultramafic rocks. The details of geological structure of the fields may be found in the relevant papers.Diverse samples were collected from the hydrothermal fields: seafloor massive sulfides, Fe-hydroxide crusts, SiO2-rich sulfide-bearing precipitates, and subseafloor mineralized rocks (Melekestseva et al., 2014a). Massive sulfides may be subdivided on the Fe-rich and Cu-rich types. The marcasite-pyrite, pyrite, hydroxide-marcasite, and chalcopyrite-pyrite (Fe-rich) mineral types are dominant in the Peterburgskoe field at lesser amounts of sphalerite-hydroxide-chalcopyrite and pyrite-covellite-chalcopyrite (Cu-rich) massive sulfides. The mineralized sulfide-talc-carbonate-chlorite, chlorite-sulfide-quartz, and hematite-sulfide-quartz rocks host stringer-disseminated sulfides including chalcopyrite, covellite, and pyrite."

The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH OMSHR) conducted laboratory testing of a self-tramming, remotely controlled mobile Dry Scrubber (DS) that J.H. Fletcher and Co. developed under a contract with NIOSH OMSHR to reduce the exposure of miners to airborne dust. The scrubber was found to average greater than 95 percent dust removal efficiency with disposable filters, and 88 and 90 percent, respectively, with optional washable filters in their prewash and post-wash test conditions. Although the washable filters can be reused, washing them generated personal and downstream respirable dust concentrations of 1.2 and 8.3 mg/m3, respectively, for a 10-min washing period. The scrubber’s velocity-pressure-regulated variablefrequency- drive fan maintained relatively consistent airflow near the targeted 1.42 and 4.25 m3/s (3,000 and 9,000 ft3/min) airflow rates during most of the laboratory dust testing until reaching its maximum 60-Hz fan motor frequency or horsepower rating at 2,610 Pa (10.5 in. w.g.) of filter differential pressure and 3.97 m3/s (8,420 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow quantity. Laboratory sound level measurements of the scrubber showed that the outlet side of the scrubber was noisier, and the loaded filters increased sound levels compared with clean filters at the same airflow quantities. With loaded filters, the scrubber reached a 90 dB(A) sound level at 2.83 m3/s (6,000 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow, indicating that miners should not be overexposed in relation to MSHA’s permissible exposure level — under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 62.101— of 90 dB(A) at or below this airflow quantity. The scrubber’s washable filters were not used during field-testing because of their lower respirable dust removal efficiency and the airborne dust generated by filter washing. Field-testing the scrubber with disposable filters at two underground coal mine sections showed that it could clean a portion of the section return air and provide dust reduction of about 50 percent at the face area downstream of the continuous-miner operation.

Flotation is the most efficient and preferred solid-solid separation method in mineral processing. However, enhanced production of high-grade concentrates at sufficiently high recovery still poses technological challenges to-day. A novel flotation method to produce final-grade concentrates from finely-ground ores in a single step is being developed and tested by CANMET. For the complex sulphide ores tested, grades are superior while recovery is considerably improved. Furthermore, concentrate production rates, at similar recoveries, are faster than for the conventional rougher-scavenger-cleaner configuration. This paper discusses the physical operating parameters affecting Cu-Zn flotation metallurgy.

Environmental considerations are extremely important in planning and carrying out mergers, acquisitions and real estate transfers. It is not inconceivable that potential or actual environmental liabilities could exceed the targeted company&apos;s net worth or the book value of the real estate of interest. It is therefore essential that an environmental due diligence investigation (DDI) be performed to quantify environmental liabilities before sales, mergers or acquisitions. This paper will discuss general procedures used in environmental due diligence investigations. The emphasis will be placed on mergers and acquisitions. It should be pointed out that the procedures discussed in this paper are general and must be modified to fit each particular merger or acquisition under consideration.
