Deep tillage is used widely as a Means of alleviating excessive soil compaction. There has been some concern that the voids created by deep tillage may collapse before a more natural soil structure develops, resulting in recompaction subsequent to deep tillage. A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of pneumatically injecting organic material into the voids during deep tillage to prevent any significant recompaction from occurring. Various amendments were injected into the soil in the laboratory using a small-scale ripping and injection system. Measurements were made of selected soil properties to evaluate the feasibility of this method.

The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

"Over the past decade, as conventional underground deposits have been depleted, mining operations have been forced to produce at greater depths and in more geologically and geometrically challenging conditions. As such, there has been a global increase in the application of cemented paste backfill (CPB) in tabular deposits utilizing open stope mining method with a delayed backfill placement. Despite the extensive use of CPB, many fundamental factors affecting the design of safe and economical fill structures are still not well understood. A critical issue in the design of backfilled stopes is the determination of stress states within the fill material itself as well as the surrounding rock mass. Analytical equations provide a means of quickly evaluating the effectiveness of a given design. However, in developing these equations large assumptions are implemented to simplify the design problem. It is important that one understands these simplifications as well as their effect on the overall design. This paper investigates common analytical equations utilized in the evaluation of single vertical backfilled stopes and their assumptions through comparisons to numerical modeling results. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND As the mining industry continues to produce at greater depths and in more geometrically and geologically complex conditions, cemented paste backfill (CPB) has gained traction as a means of providing localized ground support in modern stope-and-fill mining operations. The application of CPB in stope-and-fill mining as a ground support material has led to the reduction of mine waste costs, while increasing both mine production and stability. In an attempt to achieve total extraction of the mining reserve, stope-and-fill mining operations often employ a primary-secondary excavation-support sequence (see Figure 1). In this practice, primary stopes are initially excavated and then backfilled in a two-stage pour; plug and final pours. During the first stage (plug), a CPB material with increased cementitious content is placed at the bottom of the stope providing a strong base from which to build a backfill structure as well as protect mine works from material breakthrough. Following placement, the backfill plug is allowed to cure to a given strength as designated by the mine design. Upon achieving the required cure strength, a less cementitious CPB material is used to backfill the remaining stope area. This is referred to as the final pour stage. With all primary stopes excavated and supported using backfill, the extraction of the secondary stopes commences as primary stopes are utilized as artificial pillars. While the application of CPB in a primary-secondary extraction-support mining sequence allows for a substantial increase in reserve recovery, it is imperative the mining personnel and planning engineers have a clear understanding of the material’s behavior and stress interaction with the surrounding rock mass to ensure the most efficient, cost-effective, and safe extraction of underground deposits."

The Bureau of Mines has studied 260 underground coal mine fires which occurred from 1970 through 1989. Every fire had the capacity to be hazardous to life and property, however upon closer examination some were found to be inherently more dangerous than others. Our research involved reviewing and recording specific information contained in published Mine Safety and Health Administration fire accident reports. The objective was to determine if degrees of hazard relative to fire source or location could be construed from information contained in the reports. We specifically looked at the propensity for fires to cause injuries and fatalities as well as the need to seal the area in order to extinguish the fire. Relative to all underground locations, this review found that fires occurring in main haulage-ways were most likely to cause injuries and fatalities as well as require sealing of at least the immediate area to extinguish.

To evaluate the effects on groundwater of a proposed in-pit disposal operation at an east Texas lignite mine, the local geologic, hydrogeologic, and geochemical features were thoroughly characterized. Resultant data were used in a flow and transport model (SWIFT) to simulate migration of the ash leachate. Computer simulations indicate that the leachate plume will travel 61-152 meters from the disposal area in 100 years after resaturation of the spoils. A 61-meter buffer zone of mine spoils without ash will surround the disposal area. The proposed landfill operation received regulatory approval and is currently operating as a Class 2 non-hazardous landfill.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. What had been considered impossible for a long time, has been achieved by Herrenknecht experts together with the Swiss company Marti AG: unmanned segment production on the working line. The moulds open and close autonomously with the help of a hydraulic system. A robot cleans and greases the moulds at one work station and inserts the injection sockets at another. The next step will include further automation and digital networking of all processes from production to installation in the tunnel.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made in this investigation for determination of Eh in solutions containing sulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. In addition, the sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in sulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration of sulfide ions. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion, HS-, concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion, S-, activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of sulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

A field trial of by distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) technique was conducted at a longwall coal mine in Australia. This investigation was designed to assess the applicability of DOFS for microseismic monitoring in mining. The experiments used commercially available optic fiber cables, geophones and associated data acquisition instruments – a fiber interrogator and a seismic recorder. The fiber cable was deployed in a 300m deep hole and in trenches of approximately 3.5 km long on the ground surface around and across the longwall panel being mined. The results obtained from the experiments have shown that DOFS is able to acquire microseismic data with quality that is comparable to geophones. It has been proven that DOFS can achieve higher spatial resolution for seismicity sensing and higher accuracy for locating events than a geophone network. These characteristics are particularly useful for using DOFS to monitor ground vibrations associated with ground caving processes and rock fracturing events induced by mining and civil engineering. It was also found that far more additional seismic events were recorded by the fibers than by the geophones. Automated data discrimination and processing methods must be developed in order to utilize DOFS for real-time applications.

"Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanodynamic and chronopotentiometric techniques were used to characterize the effects of DXG-F7®, a commercial smoothing agent, on copper electrodeposition onto 316L stainless steel from a synthetic electrolyte containing 40 g/L copper (Cu2+), 160 g/L sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 20 mg/L chloride (Cl-) at 40oC. The findings were compared against results using HydroStar® 4208, a modified polysaccharide. The nucleation overpotential and plating potential observed in cyclic voltammetry and galvanodynamic testing showed that neither DXG-F7 nor HydroStar significantly polarized acidic copper electrodeposition. Subtle differences between the additives were found during EIS testing and modeling, but more research will be needed to fully understand these differences. Surface-roughness measurements of two-hour deposits indicate that DXG-F7 and HydroStar produced smoother deposits as their concentrations in the electrolyte increased. No difference in the surface roughness of deposits was detected between the additives. Based on the experimental evidence resulting from the laboratory testing, no significant difference was found between DXG-F7 and HydroStar at 20 mg/L Cl- concentration, with the exception that DXG-F7 dissolves more easily in water than HydroStar. Introduction Cathode deposits obtained from acidified copper sulfate electrolyte(s) without organic additives are often soft, coarsely crystalline and nodular (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Therefore, small amounts of organic additives are added to the electrolyte to produce level and dense cathodes during copper electrowinning. The action of organic additives is thought to be due to their adsorption on the surfaces of the newly formed copper grains. Hence, any copper grain that grows excessively fast adsorbs a layer of organic additive, which inhibits growth. The result is a smoother and harder deposit of suitable purity (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). In part I of our four-part series on the examining of copper electrowinning smoothing agents, a review of previously published work on organic additives used during copper electrowinning was presented (Moats, Luyima and Cui, 2016). In the review, it was noted that many tankhouses had switched from guar to other saccharide-based products such as HydroStar and DXG-F7."

Grinding and energy input in stirred media mills are studied as functions of grinding time, stirring speed, media size and density, solid concentration, impeller and tank dimensions and design, and other relevant variables. Ground product size and surface area are determined with respect to the above variables. Changes in energy input and media/pulp rheological properties during grinding are described. The best conditions for grinding limestone in the laboratory stirred media mills have been identified. Equations for correlations involving power and modified Reynolds numbers have been established.

Extensive research and testing in commercial facilities has clearly demonstrated that heavy medium cyclones are the most effective process for cleaning a 0.6 x 0.15mm (28 x 100 Mesh) coal at low separating gravities, less than 1.35. This paper describes testing performed to deter- mine system characteristics at these lower gravities and the type of circuitry required to maximize performance. The results of these studies include both pilot and commercial scale tests of cleaning 0.6 x 015mm (28 x100M) coal.

The use of resin-grouted cable supports to control large ground movements in several types of underground mines has increased substantially since being introduced in 1991. Cables offer several advantages over traditional support systems, having large support capacities coupled with the flexibility to be used in low openings. Cable slings have been designed to be installed on-cycle using no-spin technology or a two-piece unit that can be placed with hand-held drilling equipment. Additionally, yielding cable supports have been developed and are being used to control large amounts of movement in coal and evaporite deposits.

These problems are so severe and some so new that conventional thinking may not be adequate to resolve them. Innovation has to be a part of every company's approach to the solutions, our concept is to start with a "Blank Piece of Paper.' The objective of 'this paper is to outline steps which can be taken to improve the profitability of a mining business. This is not an examination of technical solutions to individual problems, but rather recommendations for overall change in management thinking. This philosophy is based on our actual, hands-on experience in major open pit operations worldwide over the past 25 years.

The areas of application, the limitations imposed by water chemistry as well as the advantages and disadvantages in the use of limestone for the treatment of coal mine drainage have recently been described by the authors (1),(2), (3). The process has been demonstrated in continuous, full-scale operation to yield a treated water meeting specifications established by the Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board and containing excess alkalinity. Their final pH levels are usually less than seven, a condition which avoids consumption of excess neutralization reagents, but which occurs with lime-based processes and results from unwanted side reactions. Operating experience has been cited by Calhoun (4) using ferric waters while others (5), (6), (7), (8), (11), have reported on related research efforts. Despite the advantages including ?the relative simplicity, and minimal costs of the process, there have been very limited industrial applications of mine drainage neutralization with limestone. Although any treatment of these waters may be considered as a temporary control measure (9), the lack of feasible, immediate alternatives, the extensive magnitude. of the waters and the high cost of treatment requires that optimum processes should be utilized and that operating experience in their use be developed as is feasible. This paper will review treatment experience with a ferrous water of moderate pollution loading .

Brohm Mining Corporation, in conjunction with Geobiotics, Inc. has nearly completed a pilot heap biooxidation test on sulfidic ore from the Gilt Edge Mine near Rapid City, South Dakota. Some results from the pilot testing have shown the correlation between the extent of biooxidation and the increase in cyanide gold recovery seen in the laboratory. Bench scale testing showed approximately a 1: 1 correspondence between percent biooxidation and percentage increase in gold recovery. The economics of large scale biooxidation were also evaluated in terms of increased gold recovery versus the time and cost of biooxidation. In the pilot test, the rate of biooxidation became limited by the acid water neutralization system. Later in the test, measures were taken to overcome this problem. Results from bench scale column bioleach testing showed that the Gilt Edge sulfide ore is quite amenable to biooxidation with a substantial increase in gold recovery with just partial biooxidation. Direct cyanide gold recovery of 51 % on ore crushed to -3/8" was enhanced to 82-85% after oxidation of37% of the sulfide as measured by iron. Laboratory experiments also showed that the slow rate of biooxidation of this ore could be accelerated by removal of metal sulfate build up from the leach liquor. The combination of these normally non-toxic metals became inhibitory to biooxidation if not removed by the neutralization circuit.

Precedence constraints are broadly used in mathematical models and algorithms for mine planning to model, for example, slope angles in open pit operations or connectivity in underground mines. Unfortunately, these constraints do not capture relevant geometrical aspects for the design of the mine like minimum bottom space of pits or smoothness of the economic envelope in block caves. In this work, we present different approaches that utilize precedence constraints generating economic envelops that are more suitable for design purposes. The numerical experiences show that the proposed techniques produce high value envelops with better geometrical properties and that the methods proposed can be computed efficiently.

"The silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide in leach solutions that contain primarily free cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method overestimates the concentration of free cyanide and underestimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric (MP) titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues associated with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper, and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, analytical results obtained with the new MP-WAD method were found to be within about ±5% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.IntroductionThe silver nitrate titration method is widely used to estimate the concentration of cyanide in leach solution for purposes of cyanidation process control. Cyanide determined by silver nitrate titration is commonly referred to as “free” cyanide, but frequently should be referred to as “titratable” cyanide. Titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide when metal-cyanide complex concentrations (e.g., cadmium, copper, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc) in solution are low. In other words, titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide if the solution primarily contains free cyanide."

It's indeed a pleasure for me to speak to you today about the development and operation of large-scale surface coal mining projects in the western United States. It is an exciting story about American business working to solve a critical national problem -- the energy shortage -- through research, new technologies, financial innovation, and imaginative management. The North American Coal Corporation -- the second largest independent mining company and ninth largest United States coal producer -- is proud to be a part of this story. Our operations in North Dakota reflect the coal industry's Western activities. So, today, I would like to focus on our planned involvement in that state. I'll briefly survey why North American is developing large- scale surface mining in North Dakota, and I will outline the many problems associated with this coal development and how we are working to solve them. Finally, I will look at the financial and management techniques we are using to make it all work. In short, I'm going to present a case study of Western coal mining. Let's begin by looking at the reasons we are in North Dakota. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates that 44 per cent of the nation's total recoverable coal deposits underlie the three Northern Great Plains States of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. We estimate that North Dakota alone has about 25 billion economically surface-mineable tons of coal with today's technology. North Dakota has the energy that could keep our factories running and our homes lighted In the years ahead.
