The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical while responding to a fire incident since an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring the fire contaminants such as toxic gases and smoke unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been carried out by researchers and scholars around the world. However, the proposed methods heavily rely on a vast amount of mine ventilation simulations, which are very time and computer-power consuming, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this paper, a direct derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation has been developed and implemented into a mine fire simulation software, MFIRE. The results from the direct derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The direct derivative method has been proved to be reliable and accurate.

The word "line" has been used loosely for many forms of the common steel plant flux. For example, many people use the word "lime" for nigh calcium and dolomitic limestone, for high calcium and dolomitic quicklime (also called caustic lime, calcined lime; burnt lime, pulverized and pebble lime) and ;van for clinkered dolomite. Calcium hydroxide, also called slaked lime and hydrated lime, is called "lime" but is seldom used as a flux except when the quicklime air slakes in open boxes or bins. All of the above forms of "lime" are used in the steel plant. Calcium hydroxide is used for water treatment, acid neutralizing, and as a lubricant for wire drawing. All the other limes are used as fluxes in the sintering plant, blast furnace or steel producing furnaces. In the production of self-flux or super-flux sinter, high calcium and dolomitic limestone fines are used. Where quicklime fines are available, they may be added to the sinter mix also. The blast furnace uses both high calcium and/or dolomitic limestone. A few trials have been made using iron oxide stabilized dolomitic lime in an attempt to reduce coke consumption and to increase the production rate. The trials were very successful but would' not be economical, except in periods of coke shortages, with resulting extremely high coke cost and exceptionally high hot metal demand.

The importance of factoring mining dilution into feasibility stage ore reserve estimates is discussed. An example that relates the issue of mining dilution to the size of smallest volumes that can be mined selectively is given. Relationship between the size of the selective mining units (SMU's) and the variance of their average grade is presented. The concept of variance reduction and its use in factoring mining dilution into geostatistical ore reserve estimation is described. An approach to estimate variance reduction factor by way of conditional simulation is introduced.

Abstract. World reserves of bauxite are abundant. Domestic reserves are limited and as a consequence the United States must rely on foreign suppliers for over 90 percent of its bauxite. Nationalization of many bauxite mining operations, levying of higher taxes, increased production and transportation costs, and attempts to create a uniform market price combined to place the United States in a vulnerable position. Alumina from kaolin, alunite, anorthosite, and oil shale have-been-or are being evaluated. World bauxite reserves are increasing and attempts to establish a uniform price have failed; therefore, it may be many years before domestic non-bauxite sources of alumina can compete with imported foreign bauxite.

Potential large scale uses in secondary battery systems and fusion reactors together with a steady increase in demand for conventional applications, particularly in aluminum smelting, has resulted in an increasing interest in lithium and its compounds. Current world requirements are met from both granitic pegmatites and non-pegmatitic sources and although the emphasis in this short paper is on the pegmatitic minerals, and, in particular, on their "direct usage" applications, a short summary of other sources and requirements for chemical production is included for the sake of completeness.

Chemical and physical properties of surface soils and overburden materials must be evaluated prior to strip mining activities. This information can be used to assess whether subsurface overburden can be equal in quality to the existing surface soils, especially when these soils are classed as prime farm lands. In Texas, materials from the Carrizo, Calvert Bluff, Simsboro, and Hooper Formations overlie the lignite. The Carrizo Formation consists of thick clean sands with poor water and nutrient retention capabilities. These materials are least suited for placement of the surface of reclaimed land. The oxidized, medium textured overburden from the Calvert Bluff and Simsboro Formations possess adequate water and nutrient properties and are better suited for sustained plant growth. Non-oxidized Calvert Bluff and Hooper sediments generally have acceptable properties for reclamation. However, caution must be exercised in vegetating these materials since they may contain acid forming sulfide minerals.

Impacted waters, often complex, are created in mining which at some point in the mine life cycle will need to be attended. The simplest and most cost effective method of handling impacted water is to reuse it as makeup water for operations. At the end of mine life, operational reuse will not be an option and the impacted water will require treatment to achieve alternative reuse goals. Conventional mine impacted water treatment is successful in removing unwanted constituents but create brine and sludge that may require special handling or additional treatment, resulting in additional liabilities and costs. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has taken an approach to water treatment that focuses on transformation not concentration. The Water Treatment Test Facility located at Sierrita Mine has three test plants that are piloting the mine impacted water transformation process. Two plants have been designed for the removal of calcium and sulfate with products of gypsum and sulfur. The third plant removes metals from process water and transforms them into marketable metal sulfides. The transformation, rather than concentration, of mine impacted water solutes greatly reduce long term risks.

Since World War II, the need for the use of explosives in construction, mining, and quarrying near congested urban areas has increased dramatically. Often times a coal mine, once isolated from a city, finds itself surrounded by residential and commercial structures. The United States Bureau of Mines and others have researched blast design to a point where ground vibration and airblast damage can be avoided. A problem still exists, however. It is the fact that people often react to only the loud noise associated with a blast although it may not cause damage. Most often it is the concussion of a blast, less than 20 hertz and inaudible, that produces damage. Public fear from the "startle" and "fright" of loud blast noise greater than 20 hertz leads to the complaints which are generally unfounded. See Thackray, Touchstone, and Baily (1975) for a further discussion of the startle effects of loud sudden noises. When blasts are designed in accordance with U.S.B.M. specifications, management generally has little to worry about with respect to damage claims. Complaints, however, still arise when the noise is accentuated from the blast. It is meteorological conditions which dictate how the sound levels will propagate. Some mines use small pilot test shots (generally one-two lbs) to determine when atmospheric conditions favor sound travel.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain sub-microscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulphide minerals such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically, by oxidative processes such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pre-treatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulphides to elemental sulphur, sulphur dioxide gas or sulphate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as down stream operating costs. Iron sulphide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulphuric acid solution that is generated from oxidation of the sulphides. This liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulphide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulphate, but this is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulphate, which then hydrolyzes and re-precipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200OC) the formation of hematite is favoured. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200OC), the formation of basic iron sulphate is favoured. If the ore or the leach solution contain significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favoured. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulphate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulphates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulphate; the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant, and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. This paper addresses the challenges in optimizing the phosphate flotation process, specifically focusing on the variability in P2O5 recovery. An artificial intelligence (AI) driven Flotation Prediction Model was developed to accurately forecast P2O5 grades. Leveraging real-time data from various operational sources, the model provides insights into how operators can opstimize key flotation parameters to enhance product quality and recovery rates. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of AI predictive modeling in addressing operational variability, marking a crucial step toward intelligent operations in the phosphate flotation process.

Concealed thermal events in longwall gobs present safety hazards for underground coal miners and can significantly interrupt mining production. The probable causes for such thermal events range from coal oxidation at slightly above ambient temperature to smoldering fires due to spontaneous combustion of the broken coal left in the gobs. Locating such “hot spots” is the key step for planning and implementing mitigation measures to bring such thermal events under control. If a mine section, or even an entire mine, has to be sealed, understanding the status of the sealed mine atmosphere is important for the decisions guiding subsequent actions. The gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system is firsthand information of great value. Fire ratios proposed by various researchers and derived from gas composition data are useful in determining the fire status and even approximating the source locations (Timko and Derick, 2006). However, the applicability of each of these ratios under particular conditions should be carefully evaluated. The use of properly combined fire ratios can enhance the certainty of analysis. The explosibility of a sealed mine atmosphere deserves primary concern for safety reasons during seal construction, idle time and reopening of the sealed area.Mine atmospheric monitoring data from a longwall mine with flame fire have been analyzed. Efforts have been made to identify the possible causes, locations and statuses of these events using the obtained gas data, as well as other ventilation, geological and mining parameters. The effect of injected inert gas to control the events has also been quantified. The explosibility of the sealed atmosphere has been determined using two methods.

This presentation provides a critical review of the steps and tools to compile a complete hydrologic review of a mine property. The forces of regulation, increased scientific analysis, better tools, and stakeholder expectations have created a perfect storm of accuracy demand. Ausenco has developed protocol to achieve the desired end.

La Espingarda kaolin deposit was formed by ?in situ? alteration of volcaniclastic rhyolitic rocks belonging to Jurassic Marifil Formation. Three volcanic lithofacies were identified: porphyric biotitic ignimbrites (PBI), a coarse lithic ignimbrite (ILG), a fluidal intrusive rhyolite (RFI), all kaolinized in different degrees. The alteration covers an ellipsoidal area of ~20,000 m2, with its alteration decreasing downwards and disappearing at 8-12 m from the surface. The length to thickness ratio of alteration is 60:1. An erratic silicification was found as small zones (<3 m2) of quartz stockwork. The mineralogy is kaolinite + quartz + feldspars + Fe-oxyhydroxides ± halloysite ± illite and interstratified I/S, although the relative proportions change in each rock type. Due to coarse grain size and high quartz content, natural kaolin is unsuitable for slip cast ceramics, unless beneficiated. Washed ILG kaolin has the best rheological properties and behavior in casting and drying for its mineralogy, particle size distribution, thin texture and surface activity, as well as a certain fusibility and firing kinetics. PBI and RFI kaolins, due to finer texture, smaller grain size, lower surface activity, and higher halloysite amount, have worse slip viscosity and thixotropy that are due also to soluble salts. For the same reason, they have good casting and drying properties, but their purity brings about higher softening temperatures and water absorption. Several parameters are used to discriminate between hypogene or supergene kaolinite genesis. The hydrothermal genesis is mainly sustained by fluid inclusion temperature (150-180ºC) in quartz veinlets, while weathering is supported by deposit morphology, simple mineralogy, kaolinite stable isotopes (d18O ? 18, 13; dD ? ?59; ?85) and paleoclimatic record. It is concluded that a weathering process formed the main alteration with some participation of steam-heated meteoric waters. Neither the contents of Au, Ag, As, Sb, Hg, nor drill data support the existence of any epithermal gold mineralization at the kaolinite bottom.

Most of the coal presently used by the utility industry is cleaned at preparation plants employing wet processes. While water is the mainstay of coal washing, it is one of the least desirable components in the final product causing a reduction of the heating value as well as handling difficulties. Currently available dewatering techniques are inefficient for dewatering very fine coal (minus 325 mesh). The US coal industry has expressed serious concern about utilizing advanced cleaning processes such as column flotation because an efficient and economical dewatering process is not available.

It has been reported previously that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with Poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO). In this study it is determined that palygorskite associated with the Florida dolomite samples is responsible for their flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of the dolomite samples from different locations and its relevance to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

A road tunnel is planned to be constructed in soft, high overburden ground of around 600 m in Japan by using the center drift advancing method. The dodging effect and early ring closure of the center drift were expected to reduce the displacement and deformation of tunnel and promote safe construction. The measurement result during construction was analyzed and those effects, which the displacement and deformation after the widening excavation decreased and its effect increased as the center drift radius increased, were confirmed by numerical analysis. Also, the effect of the early closure of center drift after widening excavation did not have much effect.
