Successful soil construction involves preparation of an adequate base, selection of high quality soil materials, and placement of those materials by means which will establish a continuous macropore network and modest to low soil strength. Where such has been accomplished, experiments reveal row crop productivity on reclaimed land which is very competitive with that on undisturbed land. Inferior productivity and sensitivity to drought stress are experienced where the soils are excessively compacted during construction. Some deep tillage practices have been quite successful in improving the compacted soils, but it is preferable to avoid compaction as the soil materials are handled.

The main platinum-group metal (PGM) deposit in the Stillwater Complex is associated with a stratiform zone formed by magma mixing. In general, the intrusion is a large, layered body of Archean age which formed by repeated magmatic injections in- to a single, large, hypabyssal magma chamber. The Complex is broadly divided into the lower Ultramafic series of olivine ± orthopyroxene rocks (1000-2000 m thick) and the upper Banded series of predominantly plagioclase-rich rocks (24500 m thick). The latter is further divided into Lower, Middle, and Up- per Banded zones. The Ultramafic series, plus most of the Lower and Upper Banded zones formed from repeated injections of an olivine-saturated magma, the rocks accumulating from the floor upward with a crystallization order of olivine, or- thopyroxene, plagioclase, clinopyroxene. The olivine-bearing subzones of the Middle Banded zone formed predominantly from a magma which crystallized in the sequence plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene. Olivine-bearing subzone I, with which the PGM mineralization is associated, occurs generally -400 m above the Ultramafic series-Banded series contact. Ore grade mineralization is usually found in plagioclase or plagioclase-olivine cumulates. The platinum-group elements are associated with disseminated base-metal sulfides dominated by the assemblage, pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite. Olivine-bearing subzone I marks an interruption in the crystallization sequence of the Lower Banded zone, with the reappearance of cumulus olivine and an associated change of the crystallization sequence. These changes indicate the addition and mixing of a secondary magma of the same composition as that which later dominated in the formation of the Middle Banded zone. Characteristics associated with mixing include laterally discontinuous but well-developed layers, xenoliths of ultramafic rocks, and sedimentary-type structures such as slum- ping and graded layering. The influx of new magma caused sulfide saturation by one or more of several chemical changes including addition of sulfur, decrease in oxygen fugacity, decrease in FeO, or increase in SiO2. Once an immiscible sulfide liquid was formed, platinum-group elements were scavenged from the magma by the sulfide liquid and segregated.

The commissioning of a Distributed Digital Control. System for the grinding circuit at Cuajone, was completed by mid August, 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console, improved mill throughput significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the mills and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses in detail the strategy development, the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system. 1.0 Introduction In November 1976, the Cuajone Concentrator, located on the western slope of the Andes in Southern Peru, was commissioned to treat a nominal 41,000 TPD of ore. A systematic elimination of production restrictions has resulted in a continual increase of concentrator throughput to 48,700 TPD before the grinding control was in- stalled.

In the comparison and consideration of synthetic and natural materials, graphites represent a situation in which natural graphites amount to less than 10% of the total carbon and graphite production by weight, and less than 5% in dollar volume, There are few applications where it could not be re- placed by synthetic graphite. On the contrary, synthetic graphite materials can be engineered to cover an extremely wide range of applications. These include electrographite brushes for rotating machinery, pyrolytic graphite, graphite-impervious pipe, nuclear moderators, high purity spectrographic graphite, power tube anodes, graphite rotary shaft seals, and rocket nozzles. The special qualities of natural graphite and its limitations are delineated and the almost unlimited possibilities in artificial graphite materials are discussed.

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

The ability to assess, address, and predict mining-induced stress distribution is paramount in maintaining a safe and efficient underground operation as coal mines continue to develop at deeper depths and in more geologically complex reserves. This is especially true for longwall mining operations given their limited flexibility in panel layout and orientation. This paper focuses on ground behaviors and conditions observed at two deep-cover, steeply dipping longwall mining operations in Utah’s Unita coal basin. This region is susceptible to coal pillar bump/bounce events as a result of high depth of cover, high-extraction mining, and the close proximity of a thick massive stiff sandstone stratum to active mineworks. The successful prediction of mining-induced coal bump events for Mine A and Mine B operating in the Unita basin has prompted mine management to develop a rock mechanics testing database for reserve calculations. The database is applicable to mine planning as well as the development of multiple numerical models to proactively identify and address adverse ground conditions using input parameters calibrated to site-specific behaviors and conditions. For both Mine A and Mine B, the most critical question relates to longwall development and recovery for “extreme” deep-cover longwall panels at overburden depths greater than 600 m. This paper highlights the impact of high-stress concentrations associated with deep-cover longwall mining as well as the methods applied to mitigate stress impacts on miner safety and longwall production.

Productivity is a fascinating concept. Like motherhood or apple pie, we know it as a good thing. Just what it means is not so clear. To a coal miner we assume it means tons of coal hauled from the mine. To the company president it means profit after capital, labor, and other costs have also been reckoned. To the government economist it means output in a balance of payments. What does it mean to the biologist, and can reclamation really be productive? In this paper we discuss productivity from a biological viewpoint, give some yield data for various types of reclamation plantings, and discuss how our demand for or acceptance of differing kinds of productivity is tied up in bigger questions of land use, environmental stability, and resource allocation.

The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service port construction, transshipment and environmental control. The major problem is the transshipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and/or new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. The present report reviews progress in slurry transportation research which has been done in Japan since the 1960s when large scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are discussed.

The work to be described was part of an exploratory research program directed toward identifying potentially useful but little known reactions in extractive metallurgy. In particular, the major copper sulfide minerals, as a group, have long been considered insoluble in nonoxidizing acids (e.g. Forward and Barren, 1J60; Parsons and Ingraham, 1970; Peters et al. 1972). This generalization was considered to include nonoxidizing conditions in warm aqueous MC1 solutions (Ingraham et al. 1972) and, indeed, was consistent with our own chemical and mineralogical experience. On the other hand, under hydrothermal conditions, copper and sulfide species are carried in solution and deposited as sulfides in mineralized veins. The question that poses itself is: what are the mildest conditions of temperature and fluid composition under which commercially important copper sulfide minerals can be solubilized in the absence of an oxidizing agent? A reference to H2S formation during oxygen-sulfuric acid pressure leaching (Warren, 1958) of chalcopyrite, when the oxygen partial pressure was allowed to fall, provided a clue. In the present study, experimentation with chalcopyrite concentrate in dilute hydrochloric acid, under re flux conditions (in Pyrex flasks) and with an inert purge gas, revealed substantial amounts of H2S production and iron solubilization, cite negligible copper solubilization, after 2 ½ -4 days. Under comparable conditions the extent of reaction with dilute sulfuric, acetic and phosphoric acids was markedly less.

Early in the design stage of their new concentrator for the Mount Wright Plant, Quebec Cartier Mining decided to use a process computer for total control of crushing, grinding and concentrating. A map of the area is given in figure 1 and a view of the plant in figure 2. Although the use of process computers is not a new idea in petrochemical and chemical industries, their use in the mining industry is very limited. We innovated in using the computer, not only for data logging, as we have seen in some other plants, but a sole operator located in the administration building, starts and stops mill lines, crushers, load-out system, tailings, thickeners, etc ... by means of a CRT console. Our process is fairly simple as can be seen on the schematic process flow diagram (figure 3). .The ore, carried by 136t diesel electric trucks, is dumped through ore pockets onto two primary pan feeders. The feeders supply two 1,52mx2,79m gyratory crushers which reduce the ore to minus 20,32 cm. Each crushing line have a capacity of 5600t per hour and feed a shuttle conveyor distributing the crude ore into six silos.

The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95,955 mt (105,770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/mt (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper, 1.10% lead and 11.06% zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1 Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89 % copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) gold. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6 Mmt (1.76 million st). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

This paper examines the intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof by combining field investigation, laboratory testings, underground instrumentations, and numerical modelling. Cutter roof developed during the development of a set of longwall panel entries in a West Virginia coal mine was presented as a case study. Mining alternatives applicable to the mine are recommended. Cutter roof occurred in two other West Virginia coal mines were also investigated Detailed comparisons were made among the three cases. As a result of the extensive investigation, intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof failures under various conditions are presented from the practical and theoretical points of view.

A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of various kinetic test protocols on sulfate production, NP depletion and time to acidity. Six test protocols were evaluated including standard humidity cells, non-aerated cells, tall cells, shaken cells, simulated precipitation cells, and NP depletion columns. The study indicates that test protocols which disrupt the oxidizing environment, such as extreme wetting and drying cycles, shaking the cells, or the high addition of acidic water will create an unnatural environment that affect the results. Trickle leach and non-aerated test protocols create an oxidizing environment that more closely represents field conditions and are therefore recommended.

Profitability of heap leaching projects could be greatly improved if heap heights were significantly increased. Currently, heaps have been designed to a maximum height of approximately 450 feet. Higher heaps reduce ore processing costs by handling greater quantities of ore per unit area of pad. In areas with high rainfall, higher heaps also offer the benefit of a reduced catchment area resulting in less meteoric water to manage. The concern with high heaps is the functionality of geosynthetics and piping under extreme loads. The phenomenon of acid drainage is likely to occur whenever pyritic rock is broken up, permitting access of air and water. The basic chemistry of the oxidation process is described by the equations below:- FeS 2 +1120 + 7 02 ➔FeS04 +112S04 +1440k.J This reaction proceeds rather slowly, although believed to be bacterially catalysed to some extent. Once sufficient ferrous ions and acidity have been established the following two reactions take over, yielding the same net result but at a much greater rate. First, ferrous ions are oxidised to ferric; this is an extremely slow reaction unless bacterially catalysed.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common water pollution problem on active and abandoned coal mine sites in the eastern United States. AMD forms when surface mining brings unweathered pyrite-containing rocks to the surface or when deep mining allows oxygen to contact buried pyritic strata. In the absence of neutralizing compounds, the drainage that results can be extremely acidic and contaminated with dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfate. Drainages with pH < 3.0 and concentrations of sulfate greater than 1,000 mg/L, iron greater than 50 mg/L, and manganese greater than 10 mg/L are common. Where water flows through alkaline materials (such as limestone) before surfacing, the drainage is less acidic and occasionally circumneutral, but it can still contain high concentrations of sulfate and metals. Current water quality standards in the United States require that mine discharges have a pH between 6 and 9, total iron concentration less than 3.0 mg/L, and manganese less than 2.0 mg/L. At thousands of active and inactive mine sites, drainage does not meet these standards and is being treated before discharge by the mining company. At thousands of other sites, which were abandoned prior to the enactment of water pollution laws or were operated by companies that have gone bankrupt, untreated AMD is polluting receiving water systems. The standard mine drainage treatment system involves the addition of a1 kal ine chemicals to the water, which raises the pH and cause metals to precipitate in a settling pond. These systems are expensive, often costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for chemicals, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the metal- laden sludge. Because the drainage on many sites will likely be contaminated for decades, there is financial incentive to find alternative water treatment systems. In the last five years, many mining companies and engineering firms have experimented with the construction of wetland treatment systems. Very few of the several hundred wetland systems that have been built are performing well enough to justify total abandonment of chemical treatment. Nonetheless, systems continue to be built because the mining companies have found that wetlands can reduce their AMD treatment costs. It is also their hope that further research and development will eventually result in systems that will completely rep1 ace chemical treatment and offer long term performance at minimal cost. The Bureau of Mines has been actively involved, from a research perspective, with this approach to AMD treatment since its inception. In this paper, the status of constructed wetland technology is discussed with respect to the construction and performance of systems, chemical and biological processes that affect AMD chemistry within constructed wetlands, and the future of this technology as perceived by the Bureau of Mines. ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS The constructed wetland concept has its roots in observations of natural Sphaqnum peat wetlands that received acid mine drainage and, instead of being adversely affected, appeared to cause an amelioration of the polluted water (Huntsman et al. 1978; Wieder and Lang 1982). These observations instigated the idea that wet1 and systems might be used for the intentional treatment of mine drainage. Because the discharge of AMD into a natural wetland is prohibited in the U.S. by several laws, it has been necessary to construct wetlands which act solely as water treatment systems. Initially, most wetland research and construction efforts mimicked the original observations by utilizing Sphaqnum moss and peat. Despite promising laboratory results (Kleinmann et al. 1983; Tarleton et al. 1984; Burris et al. 1984; Gerber et al. 1985), virtually all field tests of Sphasnum-dominated constructed wetlands failed to provide sufficient water treatment for more than several months. The Luossavaara "Research Mine" is the First large, offensive effort in mining research conducted by the Swedish state. Over a 5-year period, 1981-1985, the Swedish Mining Research Foundation works in the "Research Mine" on the development of mining systems and equipment. The purpose is to bolster the competitive strength of the Swedish mining and mining equipment industry. The previosly abandoned Luossavaara mine in Kiruna, in northern Sweden, has been reopened especially For the project. Ore is mined and sold during the course of the research project. The income from the sales covers a large portion of the costs for teh research.

The implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) has evolved into one of the most complex environmental protection programs to come out of the late 1970&apos;s. The level of detail in the statute and the regulations have resulted in a rigid and complex set of requirements for the administration, permit-ting, inspection and enforcement of the program. In addition, the constant change of the federal program caused by regulatory changes, reorganization of the Office of Sur-face Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), ongoing litigation involving OSMRE, and the use of the budget to establish additional mandates on OSMRE and the State Regulatory Authorities have resulted in an unstable program. The instability of the program makes it extremely difficult for the States to implement their programs and to achieve the goals of SMCRA.
