INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution. Linear meridional zones of bad roof conditions have been frequently encountered in producing collieries working the Permian age Lithgow seam in the western coalfield of New South Wales. The prediction of such zones ahead of mining is desirable for reasons of both safety and economics. In March, 1981, we carried out an experimental, three-component in-seam seismic survey at Invincible Colliery to discover whether such zones have any unambiguous seismic effect. The underground survey was the first of its kind to be attempted in an Australian mine. The data quality was excellent with the spectra broadband and clear. Polarisation analysis disclosed two modes: one compressional; the other shear horizontal. The SH model was clearly dispersive and well gound to the plane of the seam. Modal velocities decreased by up to 15% at the fracture-swarm site. There is a strong suggestion on the RLS maps obtained here that the distributed fault zone is acting as a composite scatterer of channel waves. The P-SV and SH wave tomograms obtained show, in a general way, the distribution of stress in the coal panel.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. In order to develop more accurate procedures for scale-up and design of semi-autogenous-grinding mills through detailed mathematical models, a better understanding of the charge motion and rock/ball segregation is needed. To achieve this a 0.61 m (2.0 ft) diameter x 0.305 m (1.0 ft) length plexiglas mill was constructed as a scale model of a commercial SAG mill. Rock motion in the rotating mill was simulated using various sizes of ceramic balls. Quantitative measurements of dynamic angle of repose, water and slurry motion, holdup and size segregation of the charge were taken. In addition, a video-presentaiton (available to the public) was prepared to elucidate charge and water motion at various mill speeds, charge volumes, rock size distribution and flow rates.

It all started with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, which establishes that Congress is committed to restore and maintain environ- mental quality. It directs all federal agencies to identify and develop methods and procedures so that environmental parameters and values will be given equal consideration in the decision-making process, along with economic and technical parameters. Section 102 of the Act directs, among other things, that all agencies will submit a detailed statement on: (1) the environmental impact of the proposed action, (2) any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented, (3) alternatives to the proposed action, (4) the relationship between local short term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long term productivity, (5) any irreversible and irretrievable committments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented. Passage of this act has been followed by other legislation, both federal and state. The Water Quality Act of 1970 puts teeth into the previously existing Federal Water Pollution Control Act by requiring a "certificate of reasonable assurance that the activity licensed will not violate the applicable water quality standards." The Clean Air Act of 1970 requires that the Environ- mental Protection Agency establish national air quality standards, as well as standards for significant new pollution sources.

The Green Mountain Copper Prospect is an unusual stratiform base metal occurrence located in the California Foothills Copper-Zinc Belt. Mined for rich secondary oxide-carbonate ores since 1863, the first serious exploration of the primary ores was in the 1970's. Unlike typical volcanogenic deposits of the district, stratigraphy consists of greywackes overlain (?) or intruded by an intermediate to felsic volcanic unit. Shales and siltstones overlie the volcanic unit. Massive pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur at the top of the volcanic unit. Later intrusion and deformation metamorphosed the sequence and created a SW plunging anticline. Characteristic magnetic and electrical geophysical signatures are present and reviewed.

About 15,000 tonnes of zinc per year is present in the dusts and fumes produced in electric arc and BOS steelmaking, secondary copper refining and brass ingot making. Apart from the use of some copper-smelter fumes for zinc chemicals manufacture, zinc is not recovered and their disposal by landfill entails some risk of pollution by leach-out. The paper describes processes for recovering the zinc based on leaching and electrowinning. It was shown that the procedures normally employed for purifying zinc-electrolytes derived from primary sources are sometimes ineffective for secondary materials. Alternative process routes are proposed. Source materials were leached with acidic or alkaline reagents and solvent extraction was employed for electrolyte purification in addition to the usual techniques involving precipitation. Examples of integrated flow sheets for specific source materials are presented.

For many years the green and dry compressive strengths' of pellets have been, considered as possible criteria of pellet performance during induration. Although widely quoted throughout the industry, little attention has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of the test. The purpose-of this study was to compare the constant deformation rate test with that using a constant loading rate in addition, the dependence of these tests on such pellet properties as size, weight, and method of balling was to be investigated.

An understanding of how health and safety management systems (HSMS) reduce worksite injuries, illnesses and fatalities may be gained in studying the behaviors of health and safety leaders. These leaders bear the accountability for identifying, understanding and managing the risks of a mining operation. More importantly, they have to transfer this knowledge of perception, recognition and response to risks in the mining environment to their workers. The leaders’ efforts to build and maintain a mining operation’s workforce that consistently executes safe work practices may be captured through more than just lagging indicators of health and safety performance. This exploratory study interviewed six leaders in occupations such as site-level safety supervisors, mine superintendents and/or general managers at surface and underground stone, sand and gravel and metal/nonmetal mine sites throughout the United States, with employee populations ranging from 40 to 175. In exploring leaders’ perspectives on how they systematically manage health and safety, examples such as approaches to task training, handling near-miss incidents, identifying future leaders and providing workers with feedback offer insights into how leaders translate their knowledge and management of site-level risks to others.

"INTRODUCTION This paper addresses the prevalence of poor public reporting practices of Coal Exploration Results, Coal Resources and Coal Reserves in southern Africa. Currently, the reporting of coal tonnage without supporting coal qualities or “saleable” tonnes and quality is a poor reporting practice that occurs far too often. Not all coal is equal – therefore it is extremely important that investors or potential investors are provided with the full details of both run-of-mine (“ROM”) and Saleable coal tonnage, their associated qualities and other material and relevant information. Competent or Qualified Persons should note that publicly reported information should be sufficient to enable an informed reader to make a reasonable and balanced assessment of the significance of the information provide. “Companies are encouraged to provide information in their Public Reports, which is as comprehensive as possible” (CRIRSCO, 2013): too often this isn’t the case and material matters are either not reported or inadequately disclosed. According to the South African National Standard (SANS) 10320:2014 draft document - “tonnage and coal quality that will be available for sale, either in the raw ROM state (raw Saleable) at a specified moisture content, or after beneficiation of the ROM coal by processing operations to produce materials at specified qualities, size ranges and moisture contents. The assessments must demonstrate that at the time of reporting, the marketing of the products is reasonably justified. The basis of the predicted practical product yield to achieve the Saleable Coal Reserve must be stated. The moisture basis of reporting shall be stated.” As an example to why coal qualities are so important to the public, the requirements of South Africa’s electric public utility (Eskom) power stations are highlighted. The Kendal power station, commissioned in 1988, operates at a Calorific Value (“CV”) range of 19 to 20MJ/kg, an Ash content between 29 and 34% and Volatiles between 20 to 21%. Other power stations, such as Kriel or Hendrina, may require different qualities such as a CV range of 22 to 23MJ/kg, an Ash content between 20 and 28% and Volatiles between 22 to 23%. Thus, in terms of domestic saleable coal, it isn’t just about reporting the coal qualities but also informing the investor as to which power station the coal is intended to be sold as “boilers are designed to burn particular qualities of coal” and “it is not always possible to transfer coal between stations because of different quality requirements at each station” (Chetty, 2010). Sulphur content is also another important quality with the ideal coal content having a quality of less than 1% Sulphur."

"Money and reputations can be lost in bad projects. Causes of bad mineral processing projects include poor contract definition and purchase of equipment without adequate test work. However, the root cause of many of the problems that can lead to bad projects is not any inanimate object, bad weather or catastrophic natural event but the people working on the projects. Because the people are so critical to the success of a mineral processing project, one must have suitably qualified and experienced people (SQEP) in all key positions. Characteristics that define SQEP include people who have successfully executed projects of similar size before; have undertaken projects treating the same minerals and producing the same valuable products and people who are familiar with designing, operating and implementing the required technologies and unit operations.To minimize the likelihood of future bad mineral processing projects, five recommendations are put forward in relation to the people aspect of a project.1. Attempt to retain SQEP during any down turn in the mining economic cycle so thatthe knowledge and experience can be kept within the industry.2. Increase the effort in attracting young people into the industry and retaining them.3. Set up robust training program to give young professionals a firm foundation of what real life projects and operations are like.4. Provide mentoring and continuous training for people after they have completed their formal graduate training program. Their career progression should be appropriately monitored and controlled.5. People working in projects must be exposed to as many detailed design and other finer issues as possible so that they can comprehend the amount of work required to deliver a project successfully."

Lime is one of the most extensively used chemicals in industry. Other than sulfuric acid, it is used in greater quantities than any other man-made industrial chemical. In 1974 there were 20,368,000 tons of lime used in the United States, which amounts to approximately 190 pounds for each man, woman and child in our nation. Lime also is perhaps the most diversely used of any industrial chemical. It is used in such areas as pharmaceutical, chemical, steel making, glass making, production of copper and aluminum, sugar refining, agriculture, construction, ecological endeavors, potable water treatment and sanitation. Figure I lists the major uses of lime for 1974, which is the latest year for which this data is available. The impact of the use of lime for ecological reasons did not show up to any appreciable extent in 1974, but we expect this to be a significant factor within the next few years. Fortunately, in the United States and also in most of the world, there are many deposits of high quality limestone available for the production of hood quality lime. For this discussion, we will assure that a limestone of a suitable quality and size consist will be available in a storage bin or stockpile near the kiln. Quality requirements for the lime product will be covered. We also will give a brief description of the three most popular types of lime calcining systems, how they function, and expected lime product quality from each of these. Commercial fuels and major accessory equipment will be discussed briefly.

Introduction Today, uranium is of great interest because of its application to nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Kazakhstan has been an important source of uranium for more than fifty years. All uranium products are exported. Results In Kazakhstan uranium exploration started in 1948 and developed in several parts of the country thru mining of hard rock deposits. There are known around 50 uranium deposits in six provinces: Shu-Sarysuyskaya (57%), North Kazakhstan (18%), Syrdaryinskaya (15%), Ilyiskaya (7%), Caspian (2%), Balkhash (1%). In the Northern Kazakhstan province, KazSabton took over Tselinny Mining & Chemical Co in 1999. In this province the stockwork is of Paleozoic and Paleozoic folded complexes origin. In the Balkash province some mining of volcanogenic deposits occurred during the Soviet era. This province’s stockwork is of Endogenous origin.In the Ili province uraniumis mainly found in uranium-coal deposits formed by oxidation of the lignite beds roofs. In the Caspian province the Prikaspisky Combine operated since the 1960s a major mining and processing complex on the Mangyshalk Peninsula. This led to the founding of Aktau. It was privatised as Kaskor in 1992 and operations ceased in 1994. The uranium occurrence is associated with the phosphorous from fossil fish bone detritus conglomeration. In the Chu-Sarysu province, which has more than half the country's known resources, both Stepnoye and Tsentralnoye have been operating since 1978 and 1982 respectively. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones. In the Syrdarya province slightly to the west of the province’s center the No.6 Mining group has been operating since 1985. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is sponsoring the construction and operation of a coal cleaning test facility at Homer City, Pennsylvania. The facility represents a major investment by the electric utility industry to advance the state of the art of conventional coal cleaning technology. The facility is unique in design and can process large quantities of coal in conventional flowsheet configurations, simulate full size plant conditions, and perform open and closed loop performance testing on conventional and advanced coal cleaning equipment. Computer operation will also be demonstrated. The facility objectives, initial complement, and operating plane are discussed as they relate to other coal cleaning projects at EPRI.

Creating projects to reach a goal is not new to American industry. In fact, all major construction projects, from skyscrapers to bridges, are completed using similar project management techniques. However, modern project management is relatively new. It was not formalized until 1962, when NASA and the US Department of Defense recognized the need to develop uniform project management procedures throughout the aerospace industry (Moder, Phillips and Davis, 1983). This management method was not introduced to the mining industry until the early 1970s (Britton, 1983). Project management typically follows an organized, four-stage process —definition, planning, implementation and control.

Barrick Gold Corporation in conjunction with SNC Lavalin Engineers and Constructors have developed basic engineering design for counter current decantation thickener (CCD) plants capable of processing 44 000 t/d. To achieve this throughput in a single train, the largest high-rate thickeners installed to date have been utilized in concert with large process slurry and solution transport systems. Process reliability and plant operability and maintainability have been carefully considered in order to develop a practical, yet cost effective design. The design also incorporates the challenges associated with installation of large equipment and structures in a remote location, with a climatically hostile environment, situated in a high seismic activity zone.

"Plant design parameters for gold extraction, leach residence time and cyanide consumption are generally determined from standard bench-scale bottle roll or agitation leach tests. The application of laboratory data to process design has essentially evolved from the testing of oxide or low cyanide-consuming ores. Such scale-up factors may not be appropriate for ores that deplete cyanide and oxygen since this interferes with gold extraction kinetics. High cyanide-consuming ores also exacerbate the differences between the conditions applicable to small batch tests and large continuous operations. Testing a reactive high-sulfide South American ore deposit necessitated the re-evaluation of conventional bench-scale cyanidation procedures. Pulp density can be a major factor affecting the results for plant design purposes and should be treated as a test work variable. As with high clay-bearing ore, where pulp viscosity can hinder mass transfer, minimizing the influence of test equipment on gold extraction kinetics may require low pulp densities. This introduces interpretative complexity since cyanide consumption changes as a function of pulp density. Activated carbon also consumes cyanide, so its effect has to be accounted for in the case of carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant flowsheets. Since cyanide is an expensive reagent, often a major component of plant operating costs, it is important that the scale-up of cyanide consumption from laboratory to plant be representative. The traditional method of reporting cyanide consumption in bench-scale testing is questioned since it takes credit for residual free cyanide in leach tails. The projected plant consumption may be better estimated by using the total cyanide addition in a laboratory test. We propose a test work protocol that categorizes the cyanide consumption into its components but requires more extensive testing to generate design data. The ultimate validation of scale-up factors used by project engineers requires rigorous bench-scale versus commercial plant comparative data. Such data are not readily available.IntroductionMajor factors in the design of a gold processing plant are gold recovery, leach residence time and cyanide consumption. These parameters are important determinants of project revenue and costs and, thereby, potentially of project financial viability. Estimates of the associated design criteria for a commercial plant are normally generated from laboratory cyanidation, carbon-in-leach (CIL) or carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tests using standard procedures (Angove, 2005). The key question is whether the standard laboratory test work procedures developed historically for low reagent consuming ores are appropriate for ores that are highcyanide and oxygen consumers.The present paper examines test procedural factors that can influence the test work results and, therefore, their interpretation for design scale-up purposes. The study refers in particular to a high cyanide-consuming sulfide ore. The ore was being tested to develop scoping level engineering design criteria for a proposed project in South America."

Gelling-grade attapulgite and sepiolite clays are employed as thickening agents for the preparation of ionically contaminated drilling fluids where the use of fresh water clays are unfeasible or impossible. Attapulgite and sepiolite are nonswelling clays that can be dispersed and reflocculated by mechanical and chemical means to increase the viscosity of fresh water, salt containing waters, gypsum contaminated waters and fluids containing cement. Such gelled systems are quite stable in viscosity properties and can be further treated with other necessary additives such as thinners, water loss reducers, weighting agents, surfactants, etc. Many of the oil well drilling fluid practices have influenced such technologies as water well drilling, foundation drilling and waste disposal. The use of salt water gelling clays in these fields will be described and compared to oil well drilling.
