Introduction During the last decade, the metallic minerals segment of the industry could be categorized as a "feast-or-famine" business. It is no secret that metallic minerals are cyclical. Employment opportunities greatly depend on the supply and demand for its mineral products. It is also not unusual for there to be a lag between the industry's manpower requirements and academia's ability to produce new graduates. Due to this lag, there will be years with manpower shortages, as in the mid-1970s. At other times, supply will exceed demand. The question is where will the jobs be in the years to come? This presentation will review reasons why employment opportunities have declined within the metallic minerals industry. It will also predict future demand for mineral engineering graduates. And it will outline strategies for obtaining an employment offer. Historical Review - Employment From 1977 through 1983, about 75% of all metal mining employees were directly engaged in production activities, down from 83% in 1965. This decline reflects increased use of labor saving equipment, and more government regulation and foreign competition. Metal mining's employment decreased from 74,000 jobs in 1982 to fewer than 68,000 in 1983 - an 8% decline. The overall industry is having these problems because of the general downturn in the economy. For example, at the beginning of this decade, US automobile and steel industries were in trouble. Interest rates were too high and volatile. This adversely affected construction, housing starts, and manufacturing. All these industries, being large users of base metals, drastically affected the metals industry. US copper companies are still having problems. Reports indicate that many copper employers have cut production, laid-off workers, and permanently closed mines, refineries, and smelters. A decline in the demand for US produced metal products, such as copper, obviously affects some mineral engineering employment opportunities. Other factors to consider when looking at employment opportunities and why it has become difficult for US metal producers to compete in the world market include: • The grades of ore bodies of many US minerals are considerably lower than the grades of ores being mined elsewhere in the world. • The grades of ore bodies currently being mined in the US are steadily declining. • Foreign producers are largely government controlled and are not necessarily subject to the realities of supply and demand. • US environmental regulations have considerably added to production costs. Foreign producers in most countries do not have to worry about these additional costs. • US mines are getting deeper. This adds to the cost of production because of the increasing distance the ore has to be transported. • Plants and equipment are outdated. Many companies find themselves operating with equipment and plants that need modernizing or replacing. This obviously hinders competitive productivity. • Labor and management have had problems. Work stoppages in certain mining businesses and high wage and benefit costs in relation to foreign producers place US producers at a disadvantage. • Much land is unavailable. The US government owns most of the land considered to have the best potential for minerals development. Most of this land is unavailable for mining or exploration. Therefore, it appears that finding employment with a company whose primary business is mining and processing most metals, such as copper, in the US will be quite restricted and competitive. Future Demand It is difficult to anticipate what key employment opportunities within the next few years will be available to mineral engineering graduates. The Engineering Manpower Commission estimated that US engineering schools awarded 72,471 undergraduate degrees in 1983 vs. 66,990 in 1982. This was the eighth consecutive year in which the number of baccalaureates awarded has increased. On a brighter note, the US government's Occupational Outlook Quarterly stated that the growth rate through 1995 for all engineers is an encouraging 49% over present levels. "Due to new technological developments, automatic sensor based sorting has made progress within industrial minerals, precious metals, diamond, and coal mining in recent years (Lessard et. al. 2016). In order to re-introduce the technology to other mining sectors, this research discusses its application to iron, manganese, and zinc ores through test works performed by the authors. These test works were performed using Dual Energy X-ray Transmission (DE-XRT) sensor technology. In each case, pre-concentrations of the ore were created demonstrating the possibility to reduce waste material, energy costs, and water consumption while improving product quality of the ores. INTRODUCTION Sorting of mining ores is as old as mining itself (Salter, 1991). Sensor based sorting applications in coal mining began as early as the late 19th century (Louis 1928). New sensor technologies were developed and implemented sequentially for uranium, nickel, coal, and gold mining (Refining, 1949, Rose et al, 1950, Bloomfield et al, 1966, Clayton et al, 1987, Robben and Mosser, 2014). While these sensor technologies were developed decades ago, computational capacity to keep pace with the vast amount of information required utilizing the sensor technology did not arrive until recently (Lessard et. al., 2016). The sensor based sorting (SBS) process was effectively described by Salter and Wyatt in Minerals Engineering in 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck in 2010 in the Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry under Sensor Based Sorting. Both descriptions include the following key steps: 1. Presentation of the material or particles. 2. Examination or detection of the material or particles. 3. Processing or analysis of the data generated. 4. Physical separation of the material or particles by external means. Effective presentation of the material or particles is achieved when the sensor is capable of identifying each particle individually. This step requires that each fragment of the material be isolated, and it often involves acceleration of the material fragments by chute or mechanical means, as well as the spreading of particles by vibratory feeders (Salter and Wyatt, 1991, and Wotruba and Harbeck, 2010). The isolated particles typically are conveyed into an area wherein they are subjected to electromagnetic irradiation (except in cases of some radioactive ores), either in the form of x-ray, visible light, infrared, or other energies. A wide range of applications for sensor based sorting exists in the literature. The majority of applications fall into one of two camps, (1) pre-concentration of mineral ores, or (2) characterization of the material during processing (Buxton and Benndorf 2013). While there is much to be gained from in-line material characterization and the resulting control both of quality and processing, this article focuses primarily on the camp of pre-concentration of mineral ores."

A common casualty of modern openpit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period, and grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper, these three fundamental openpit mine optimization problems are addressed by encoding them as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are nonlinear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot.

The Copper Canyon Cu-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.-old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Calculated 6dD values of water in equilibrium with primary and secondary biotites range from -76 to -99 per mil at temperatures indicated by d180 values from coexisting quartz and biotite. The lightest values are in secondary biotite from the east ore body. These data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.

NKK has developed a new cold bonded pellet process. The features of this process are; 1) it is a continuous process with 10 hours curing. 2) Products can be used as materials for various metallurgical furnaces. 3) Various kinds of slag are used as binders if necessary. 4) The quality of products is excellent. The pilot plant completed in 1981 is now being successfully operated. We are also constructing a commercial plant at our Niigata works. We produced cold pellets containing carbon as material for ferroalloys (Si-Mn), by pilot plant and used them in furnaces. Consequently, considerable economic advantages were obtained.

The construction and modification of tunnels brings a requirement for precise measurement of convergence and divergence to safeguard the structure, maintain safety and provide the assurance needed to maintain efficient progress. Established methods include manual measurement using tape extensometers and automated methods using photogrammetry and automated total stations. Drawbacks include the need for frequent access, power supply, cabling, and cost. The paper describes how the development of reliable optical displacement sensors (ODS) has changed the landscape. ODS sensors are connected to a long-range wireless mesh communications network via a solar-powered gateway outside the tunnel, with data instantly transmitted to the internet. A sensor and its reflector target can be installed in 20 minutes and is maintenance free for a decade. Tunnel movement is measured to sub-millimeter precision with repeatability of ±0.15 mm. Integration of a triaxial tilt sensor allows slope distance to be converted to horizontal and vertical changes and allows rotational movement to be determined. Applications include new-build and long-term structural health monitoring. Case studies will be given, including the refurbishment of rail tunnels in Spain where the ODS measured movement during track lowering in a situation where no other automated system was considered viable.

This paper presents the details of the Bad Bergzabern tunnel project. This tunnel is the main part of the B427 federal road bypass, intended to improve the regional traffic infrastructure and to reduce the traffic load in the historic city centre of the health resort Bad Bergzabern. Located in the south-western part of Germany, the project area is situated at the eastern margin of the so-called Palatinate Forest, a low mountain region of mainly triassic sediments with a complex and variable geological history. The German federal government, represented by the office of mobility of Rhineland- Palatinate, awarded the contract to BeMo Tunnelling, a specialized Tunnelling company with a long history of innovation and success in NATM tunnelling. The contract includes the construction of two separate tubes with a length of approximately 1,44 km (0.9 mi)—the road (main) tunnel with a cross section of 101 m2 (1,090 sq ft) and a parallel rescue tunnel with a cross section of ca. 23 m2 (250 sq ft.) Both are connected by six cross passages. Tunnels and cross passages are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Due to BeMo Tunnelling’s technical expertise and capabilities, the project team was able to engineer a speed-up concept that saves money and time for the construction team and client. This paper presents the innovative approach BeMo Tunnelling made to optimize the execution of the tunnelling works and the challenges the project team is facing with regard to a complicated geological situation, countermeasures against an increasing effect of climate change and volatile prices for construction materials.

A high-pressure laboratory elution rig was commissioned to simulate industrial Zadra and AARL elution conditions for the stripping of gold, silver and mercury from loaded activated carbon. It was found that cyanide was essential for the efficient elution of both mercury and silver, while gold was found to elute most effectively in hot, low-ionic strength solutions. Therefore, the standard AARL-type elution, which implements a cyanide soak and water elution, results in a lower recovery of mercury and silver from the carbon. No single set of conditions was found whereby gold, silver and mercury can all be effectively eluted in a single step. However, sequential elution conditions can efficiently recover all metals and provide a potential approach for separating these metals.

The Southern Company is one of the nation's largest electric utilities and is the parent firm of five operating companies: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric and Power. Another subsidiary is Southern Company Services (SCS) which provides engineering and technical sup-port to the five operating companies. This technical support includes the procurement and supply of over 40.9 Mt (45 million st) of coal annually for the 22 coal fired plants in the system. Approximately 80 percent of this tonnage is purchased under long term contracts and the remaining 20 percent is purchased on the spot market. The coal is principally supplied from Alabama, Illinois Basin and the eastern Appalachian coal fields. Most of the coal is delivered by unit train and barge but one plant in Alabama receives all its coal by truck and conveyor belt.

Oklahoma contains extensive resources of high-purity gypsum that were deposited in the Anadarko and Hollis basins during Permian time. The gypsum resources and reserves are estimated to be about 48 billion short tons and a; located in the western portion of the state. Oklahoma is the largest producer of gypsum products in the United States. The Blaine Formation and the Cloud Chief Gypsum contain several beds of minable thickness. Four stratigraphic units in the Blaine Formation are quarried in Oklahoma. The Shimer, Nescatunga, and Medicine Lodge Members are quarried in northwest Oklahoma. The Van Vacter Member, consisting of three gypsum beds, is quarried in southwest Oklahoma. The Cloud Chief Gypsum is quarried in the west-central part of the state. The gently dipping gypsum in the Blaine Formation generally crops out along low escarpments and is covered in the downdip direction by increasing overburden, consisting of sand, shale, and/or dolomite. Anhydrite occurs in the downdip direction under the thicker overburden. The Cloud Chief Gypsum crops out as hills, which are eroded remnants of a more widespread, massive sulfate unit. All of the gypsum produced in Oklahoma is extracted using quarrying methods. A variety of products are made from gypsum quarried in Oklahoma. The products are manufactured from uncalcined, calcined, and deadburned gypsum. Products vary from raw, ground gypsum used for agriculture, to high-value-added industrial plasters, cements, and fillers produced from calcined gypsum. A sampling of the many products manufactured from Oklahoma gypsumincludes: (1) agricultural-soil amendment; carrier for insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides; calcium supplement in animal feeds; (2) gypsum wallboard-common, fire-resistant, and water-resistant varieties; (3) industrialgypsum plasters-art and casting, pottery and ceramic, molding and tooling, crayons, wall patching; (4) industrial gypsum cements-oil-well cement, high-strength statuary, high-strength tooling, fiber-reinforced architectural, road and bridge repair; (5) food and pharmaceutical-filler and binder in aspirin and other medicines, yeast activator in brewing of beer, moisture absorbent in bread and pizza dough; and (6)portland-cement retarder-ground with clinker to control setting time.

The control of quartz levels in the respirable dust requires an approach different from that used to control respirable coal dust. The unique physical properties of quartz have to be utilized when developing quartz dust control systems. Also, techniques that modify the surface properties of quartz dust so that conventional dust control measures are effective should be explored. For instance, the wetting characteristics of quartz can be modified so that the capture efficiency of the quartz dust can be improved. Foam sprays assist in modifying surface wetting characteristics. This paper summarizes the results of a study that was conducted in an operating mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed air foam spray system installed under the boom of a continuous miner and directed so as to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of the foam underboom sprays on (1) the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, (2) the quartz concentration in the respirable dust. The engineering design of the foam generation and delivery system is described in the paper, followed by a description of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the effect of foam on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the miner cab, face return and the intake. The results of the data analyses and costs are presented in the paper.

This paper gives a review of promising technologies for phosphate processing, and covers flotation, analysis and process control, as well as tailings treatment and utilization. Air bubbles of less than a µm in size, combined with relatively large bubbles, have been demonstrated, both in the lab and on a pilot scale, to improve flotation dramatically, by reducing reagent use while improving product grade. Innovative use of polymers has allowed rapid dewatering of fine tailings with a final product that does not segregate. The first online laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzer was created, allowing rapid analysis of wet samples using the laser technology. Many large commercial projects are successfully pursuing the utilization of phosphogypsum.

General Electric developed principles for quality change management that are necessary for effective, continuing Business Process Improvement (BPI). Change Acceleration Process (“CAP”) One of the tools General Electric developed has been used successfully by companies around the world in a wide variety of industries. This tool, named Change Acceleration Process (“CAP”), is designed to improve acceptance of change. Acceptance is the method by which the creative energies of the workforce can be fully tapped. Over time, every employee receives CAP training at least once, and in many instances three (3) or four (4) times, and will work on one or more High Performance Teams. Thus, BPI can achieve and maintain its goals. A number of relatively recent factors associated with the design of new metallurgical processing plants have made the effective training of operators a requirement for a successful start-up. Some of these factors include large capital investment in a minimum of processing lines, highly complex process control systems, and stringent regulations on plant effluent, to name a few. More than ever, operating mistakes during the start-up phase can lead to substantial delays in achieving design production, as well as problems with government authorities if permit limits are exceeded. The only way to assure your return on plant investment is to ensure new plant operators have the knowledge to properly run the plant from the outset. A comprehensive set of operating manuals specifically targeted for plant operators and foreman, written by experienced operating personnel, is the only effective way to provide the necessary information for start-up-related training.

The mechanisms involved in the adsorption of modified thiol-type collectors on sulfide minerals have been investigated in the present work. These collectors belong to the broad classes of thionocarbamates, thioureas, thiophosphates and thiophosphinates. They differ significantly from the traditionally used thiol-type collectors, such as xanthates and dithiophosphates, in terms of structural features that involve either the introduction of an additional oxygen donor or the alteration of electron densities on donor atoms. Electrochemical studies suggest that the adsorption of these classes of collectors is probably the result of a coupled reaction of the EC-type, involving an initial electron transfer step (E), followed immediately by a chemical reaction (C). Thus, the overall adsorption process is controlled by both the E, and pK of the system. The role of structural features in changing the interaction of the donor atoms with sulfide minerals is also discussed.

Texas Gulf Sulphur Company's Lee Creek Mine has opened a major phosphate mining district in the Central Coastal Plains of North Carolina (Fig. 1). The ore deposit as it is now known was roughly outlined in 1961 by a Texas Gulf geologist using wire line exploration methods. Slightly uraniferous phosphate materials were detected by a slim-hole gamma ray probe run in numerous farmers' water wells penetrating the formations. A follow-up-core drilling pro- gram determined the economic ore limits to lie in the south central section of Beaufort County beneath 70 feet to 120 feet of unconsolidated sediments. The 50,000 acre deposit is known to contain over two billion tons of phosphate ore amenable to strip mining methods. A part of the deposit underlies several thousand acres of the Pamlico River estuary. The 90 million dollar capital investment plant built by Texas Gulf during 1965-66 included a strip mining operation using a 72-yard walking dragline, a three million product ton per year flotation concentrator, four fluid bed calciners, a sulphuric acid plant (acid for captive use), a phosphoric acid plant, and three solid fertilizer material plants. Shipment to domestic markets is by rail and truck and to over- seas markets by barge to a transshipment terminal at Morehead City, North Carolina. Early mining investigations were conclusive first that the phosphate ore could economically be recovered only by dry strip mining methods, and second that artesian ground waters in the formation (Castle Hayne limestone) underlying the ore would have to be controlled. This report will relate the application of ground water hydrology in depressurizing the Castle Hayne aquifer to facilitate dry strip mining at depths 130 feet below sea level at the Lee Creek Mine.

Metallurgical processes involving the use of cyanide such as gold cyanidation, metal plating and flotation, generate effluents containing cyanide and cyanide in complex combinations with heavy metals in quantities exceeding those regarded as being safe for discharge into streams. A new process for destruction of free and complexed cyanide and related-species in wastewaters has been developed at the Inco research laboratories using sulfur dioxide, air and lime. High reaction rates are obtained in the presence of a small amount of copper which acts as a catalyst. Cyanide species can be reduced to as low as 0.1 mg/L in a very short treatment time. Examples of treatment of gold mill effluents and barren slurries, plating rinse waters and flotation liquors or tailing slurries are given.

I.- In order to keep pace feeding its fast growing population, Mexico with only about 20% of its surface suitable for intensive agriculture, will need the application of modern foodgrowing techniques. To assure greater crop yields it will be necessary to apply more fertilizers than used at present (yearly average of 29 Kgs/hectare)** For its fertilizers production Mexico still depends mostly on imports of phosphate concentrates from Florida, U.S.A., Morocco and Spain. To reduce or eliminate this dependence on foreign providers, the Consejo de Recursos Minerales -a Federal Government exploration Institute- started in 1974 an exhaustive exploration program for phosphate deposits more amenable to commercial exploitation than the phosphatic limestones contained within the La Caja Formation of Upper Jurassic, found along the Sierra Madre Oriental. After studying literature on the origin and deposition of marine phosphate and visits to deposits in Florida, U.S.A., the Baja California peninsula was selected as most favorable for starting this program because of its geologic and sedimentary history and also for its geographic location, where the cold California and warm Counterequatorial currents meet. Exploration activities executed by FORNOS, S. A. (1956) led to the disco very of low grade phosphate (3 to 5% P2O5) in the recent beach sands along the Bahia de Magdalena (Fig. # 1). In his doctoral thesis Bruno D'Anglejan Chatillon (1965) reports the presence of nodular phosphate on the continental shelf, between Isla Margarita and the Vizcaino peninsula. He estimated reserves of up to 1.5 million tons. A Mexican-American marine exploration company attempted in 1966 the evaluation of this deposit with negative results.

COM Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, has constructed a 1.6 million hectoliter-per-year COM plant in Jacksonville, Florida. COM will be distributed to customers in the region as a substitute for fuel oil presently burned in boilers and kilns. As the market for COM grows, COM Energy, Inc. expects to build additional units both in this country and overseas. This paper addresses the overall status and technical aspects of the project, focusing on the facilities for COM production and utilization.

The bucket elevator is probably the oldest known form of conveyor. Its history can be traced back to the days of Babylon where wicker baskets lined with a natural pitch and fastened to ropes operating over wooden sheaves turned by slaves, were used for the elevating of water into irrigation ditches. It is not unnatural for the bucket elevator to be the first in history, for even today engineers and designers recognize that well designed, correctly applied bucket elevators offer unequaled advantages over other bulk material elevating methods. The bucket elevator's vertical design saves valuable floor space. It provides flexibility of machinery layout with lowest initial capital expenditure, which is its principal advantage. While the advantages of the bucket elevator have long been recognized, there has been a tendency to lean away from its use because of high maintenance without reliability. CHAIN Belt Company found that the bucket elevator, if correctly applied, can be built to be as dependable and reliable as any other piece of machinery in today's modern processing plants. It is not difficult to understand why the bucket elevator is looked upon sometimes as a necessary evil in the material handling system. Very little has been published or written about the specific use or application of bucket elevators other than in manufacturers catalogs. Most of today's elevator application was set forth at the turn of the century by Hetzel (1). There have been many improvements made in the manufacturing techniques of elevator components, improvements in material selections, all which can be used to improve today's bucket elevator. To best understand the improvements which have taken place recently in the design and application of bucket elevators, an understanding of basic elevator principles is desirable. In general, it can be said that bucket elevators are classified into two basic types : (1) centrifugal discharge and (2) continuous. Elevators in use today are either of the centrifugal discharge type or the continuous type, or a combination of both in special applications.
