A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) a slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) the fracturing of strong strata above or below the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or “shock” loads on the perimeter (roof, rib and floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in the planning of deep coal mines, since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers. In addition, their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

The carbothermic reduction of celestite is the first step in producing many strontium products. The way materials move in the rotary kiln has an essential effect on the carbothermic reduction efficiency as well as the temperature. In this study, the reduction of celestite ore and excess carbon blend in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln was investigated. In the experiments carried out at three different temperatures, the rotational speed and slope of the furnace tube were altered, and their effects on the reaction efficiency were examined. The leachability of the reduced powders and the content of the unburned coke indicated the optimal parameters for the reaction.When the speed was increased to 10 rpm, the powders weremoremobile in the stack and could react more easily with the furnace atmosphere. According to the results, celestite can be reduced by carbon at temperatures of 1000–1200 °C, at rates of between 5% and 75%. The maximumreaction yield (75%) was obtained with a slope of 2° and a rotational speed of 6 rpm at 1100 °C.

Electric locomotives powered by extensive electrical cabling systems were prevalent in the mining industry in the early days of the 20th Century [1]. Since the movement of tethered electrical mining locomotives was limited, the advent of diesel-powered mobile mining equipment provided more flexibility. This led the mining industry to be dominated by diesel-powered locomotives for most of the 20th Century and the entire 21st Century, to date. However, diesel power has certain drawbacks. Diesel-powered vehicles produce tailpipe emissions such as diesel particulate matter, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. Mine workers exposed to these emissions were, and continue to be, subject to health issues such as respiratory problems, increased risk of lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease. [2][3]. Extensive ventilation systems are required to dilute the diesel exhaust and dissipate the heat generated by these vehicles. Moreover, as mines are getting deeper due to depleting resources, ventilation costs in diesel-powered mines are becoming increasingly high. These factors, coupled with the trend towards greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in mine operations, has allowed zero-emission electric locomotive systems to gain traction. As lithium-ion battery technology is becoming more advanced, battery-powered electric vehicles can now perform duty cycles comparable to those of diesel-powered vehicles. Although battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are comparable to diesel-powered vehicles in terms of mobility, they have certain limitations. For instance, the amount of onboard energy is limited by the battery energy density and specific energy. The MT42 diesel haul truck from Epiroc, for example, has a fuel tank capacity of 580L, which is equivalent to around 1450 kWh of net electrical energy [4]. The electrified version of the MT42, on the other hand, has an onboard battery with 375 kWh of usable energy weighing around 4.9 metric tonnes [5]. Moreover, storing and refueling of diesel-powered vehicles is simple and quick, whereas battery energy storage and charging systems require extensive infrastructure development. Charging time is mostly limited by battery chemistry and design. Due to these limitations, the benefits of battery-powered mining vehicles are more likely to be realized with proper planning and optimization of the BEV fleet. This includes optimizing mining layouts for BEV use, charging infrastructure design, and management of onboard energy storage systems.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.

"The need to fill the void space or annulus created between an excavated tunnel or shaft and the final lining system has long been a requirement in underground construction. Most of those types of voids are created as a result of employing the two pass tunneling lining method. Filling of this void is called backfilling. For many years the materials used as backfill were primarily reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, sanded grout, neat cement grout, or blown-in sand/pea gravel. However, in the past 20 years the use of cellular grouts/cellular concrete as the backfill material has greatly increased. Most cellular grout is made of a mixture of water, Portland cement (with or without the addition of fly ash), a foaming agent and admixtures such as a water-reducer or superplasticizer.It is the authors’ preference to use the term cellular grout as opposed to cellular concrete since by ACI Concrete Terminology an ACI Standard (ACI CT 13), concrete contains aggregates. Normally cellular grout does not contain sand (finite aggregate), but almost never contain course aggregates.The authors believe there are several reasons for this increased use of cellular grout as backfill, such as:• The increase utilization of the various trenchless tunneling methods. Tunnels constructed using trenchless method tend to be smaller in size, excavated diameter or cross sectional area. Making man-entry for placing backfill from inside the secondary liner, utilizing pre-installed grout posts, more difficult if not impossible. It is these workspace restrictions that are the drivers as to when to utilize grout ports installed during the pipe/liner fabrication versus grout delivery pipes installed within the void/annulus space.• The ability of cellular backfills to be pumped and flow longer distances.• The unit weight of cellular grouts can be controlled by mix design and generally can range from 560 Kg/m3 (35 lbs/CF) to 1040 Kg/m3 (65 lbs/CF)."

This study investigates the application of fly ash as a high-strength, water-resistant precast construction material through geopolymerization. The experimental results show that working conditions such as water content, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentration, curing temperature and curing time significantly affect the mechanical properties of the geopolymer matrix. Through optimization, compressive strength above 100 MPa was achieved, and the optimum working conditions were found to be NaOH concentration of 10 M, water content of approximately 14 to 15 percent, and curing at 90 °C in an oven for one day or at ambient condition for three weeks. Water-soaking tests show that the geopolymerization product has high water resistance without losing noticeable compressive strength even after one month of soaking time. The findings provide a novel method to apply fly ash as a high-strength, water-resistant precast construction material.

The largest TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) tunnels are typically along modest slopes, but not always. Occasionally high slope angles are required beyond the capabilities of conventional open trough trailing conveyors. A 2019 project required a large TBM to ascend to an incline angle of 25°. A Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor could easily solve the high angle conveying problem but such a system must include all of the features of the conventional trailing conveyor, particularly the ability to extend with the TBM advance. The writer responded to the challenge and developed a TBM trailing Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor with all of the needed features. The invention (U.S.A. patents awarded October, 2021 and November, 2022) however goes beyond the 2019 project requirements and extends to any high angle incline. This writing first presents the broad Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor development, then its use in various construction and tunneling projects prior to this TBM Sandwich Belt trailing conveyor invention. Finally we present the new TBM Trailing Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor with all of its features and implications.

Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915 In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various borate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 400 feet (121.9 m) deep, 3000 feet (914.4 m) long and 1000 feet (304.8 m) wide. The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% coiemanite (C2B6O11' 5H2O), about 40% probertite (NaCaB5O9.5H2O), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBcO9.8H2O). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade coiemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder. This provides the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content.which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations.

Pyrite is one of the most common sulfide minerals on earth, which is usually grown with chalcopyrite and other sulfide minerals. In flotation practice, pyrite from different mines or different sections in a same mine may have different flotation behaviors. This is because the pyrite crystal contains lattice defect, including ionic vacancy and lattice impurity. The present work investigates the effects of three typical 3d transition metal (Co, Ni, and Fe) on the adsorption of CH3OCS2 −, OH−, and CN− on pyrite surface by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Calculated results show that Co impurity reduces the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite, while Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite. Co impurity has small influence on the adsorption of OH−, but Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies. Calculations on Mulliken charge population of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ indicate that the Mulliken charges of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ after OH− adsorption are more than those after CN− adsorption. This suggests that the ionic property of the M-OH- coordination bond is greater than that of M-CN- coordination bond, while covalent bonding of M-CN- coordination bond is greater than that of M-OH- coordination bond. The adsorption results are discussed based on coordination field theory (CFT).

Deposits are global, said Barrick Gold's Smith. This means that the mineral industry, by necessity, is global. "Manufacturers have considerable freedom to decide exactly where they wish to produce whatever it is that they sell," he said. "What we sell, on the other hand, must be produced where nature chose to lay it down. The question is not so much, whether to go global, as when to do it and how to go about it." The timing of international expansion depends on external factors, often political, Smith said, and on internal ones that relate to the company's size and stage of development. "In deciding how to expand, a company is largely deciding how to adapt its existing business strategy to activity on the world stage," he said Barrick entered 1997 with 1.58 kt (51 million oz) of reserves, Smith said, annual production of 93.3 t (3 mil- lion oz) and cash flow of $463 million. Reserves in- creased 40% in 1996 and production will begin to rise again significantly in 1999. "We believe our fundamental strategy is responsible for our early development and subsequent success," he said. Barrick entered the gold-mining industry in 1983. Its corporate mandate was to create shareholder value, Smith said. From the beginning, the company took a different approach - businesslike, entrepreneurial, strategic and focused. "Many mining companies start out with a technical team and develop business and financial expertise thereafter," Smith said. "In 1983, Barrick had the business people, and then moved into mining." First, it acquired part interest in two small operations, one in Alaska and one in Ontario. Then, in 1984, it merged with Camflo Mines, which operated a low-cost underground operation in Quebec.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key-technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. This review paper describes the direct carbon fuel cell and its system, how it works, the developmental status, the characteristics of the carbon particles needed, and the research and development issues for the technology. INTRODUCTION The DCFC has been under development for many years. It was researched as early as 18961), but an intense research and development is necessary to realize its potential. William W Jacques, a US electrical engineer and chemist, described a DCFC in 1896 in US Patent 555511 for a “Method of converting potential energy of carbon into electrical energy”. Jacques used coke electrodes in a molten NaOH electrolyte. Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide (SOFC) or hydroxide electrolyte (AFC) technologies can be used as the basis for the DCFC technology. A schematic of the direct carbon fuel cell in the MCFC mode is shown in Figure 1. The molten carbonate fuel cell operates at approximately 650°C (1200°F). The high operating temperature is needed to achievesufficient conductivity of the carbonate electrolyte, yet allow the use of low-cost metal cell components. A benefit associated with this high temperature is that noble metal catalysts are not required for the cell electrochemical oxidation and reduction processes. "Twin bored tunnels are commonly used for a variety of road and tunnel projects throughout the world.A major component of these twin tunnel projects is the construction of connecting cross passages that provide emergency access between tunnels and space for tunnel service equipment. Cross passages can present significant geotechnical risk and technical challenges to a project – support systems must be considered for redistributing loads around the mainline tunnel openings and supporting new loading resulting from excavation activities. Additionally, cross passages pose risks to construction schedule and cost because of their sequencing at the end of construction, so mitigation of schedule overruns can be critical. By observing field instrumentation data records from completed projects, a better understanding of the force development in each temporary structure can be achieved with indication of which structures are the most critical to support ground loads.This article discusses the data obtained during the Brisbane Airport Link construction project, a road tunnel located in Brisbane, Australia. Strain gauge instrumentation data from the precast segmental lining and propped opening steel sets is presented with relation to the construction sequence and local geology. Interpretations and conclusions based on the observed trends are proposed, with several key mechanisms affecting the loading and unloading identified.Brisbane Airport Link project overview. The Brisbane Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia, connects central Brisbane to the airport located northeast of the downtown with more than 7 km (4 miles) of twin-bore road tunnels, two lanes each, with several caverns, interchanges and access ramps constructed along the alignment to connect to other key routes in the city. The project was executed under a public-private partnership (P3) scheme, funded and operated by the consortium BrisConnections. The main contractors were a joint venture of John Holland and Theiss, while the design was carried out by Arup and Parsons Brinckerhoff.Construction of the tunnels was conducted using a combination of 17 roadheaders and two 12.5-m (41-ft) double-shield Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines (TBM) (Harding & Francis, 2013). The TBMs were used in earth pressure balance- (EPB) type closed mode for the initial portion of their drive, starting at the northeast end of the alignment. Tunneling started in soft ground, weathered rock, and mixed face conditions initially, progressing to competent sedimentary rocks as the drive continued. Support was accomplished using a 12.1-m (39.8-ft) diameter steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) segmental lining installed behind the TBMs in nine segments + one key arrangement. The innovative design of these segments is detailed in the paper by Harding and Francis (Harding & Francis, 2013). Ancillary roads and underground interchange caverns were constructed by sequential excavation techniques using roadheaders, accounting for nearly half of the total underground excavations."

The exploitation of mineral deposits for economical recovery of the contained minerals has many aspects differing from other industrial or manufacturing operations. However, generally accepted principles of good organization and management applicable to industrial plants are similarly effective for mineral processing plants. A more detailed coverage of organizational structures and management techniques than is possible in this section can be obtained from many good books devoted wholly to these subjects. A few of the more readily available examples are included in the general references at the beginning of this section. The field of mineral processing encompass a wide variety of minerals, processes, flowsheets, equipment, and end products. Mineral deposits, mines, and related beneficiation plants are found in all parts of the globe, often in remote locations with no nearby support for supplies and maintenance. Available labor is frequently unskilled, sometimes primitive, and often untrained without machine and hand tools or heavy equipment experience. Such situations call for well- planned and conducted training programs covering the full range of mining-type job skills. Acid-Minesite-Solutions (AMS) are defined as copper-containing pit lake, tailing pond, acid-mine-drainage, and heap and waste dump irrigation solutions. All of these solutions are characterized by copper, acid and water contents that have value as individual commodities. HW Process Technologies, Inc. (HWPT) has developed nano- and hyper-filtration membrane methods for the separation of copper and other base metals, acid and water from AMS. These treatments are collectively called HWPT?s Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) systems. The EMS® method of copper recovery produces small volumes of higher-concentration copper solution from large-volume, copper-dilute AMS. A case study of the 4,000 gpm Cananea EMS®-AMS plant for the recovery of copper from an acid-pit-lake resource is described. The EMS® method of copper removal from AMD and tails pond waters has been bench-scale demonstrated and are described, complete with projected budgetary capital and operating costs. Additional treatments for the recovery of sulfuric acid and high-quality water from the permeate (membrane passing) waters for the above-described AMS treatments are presented, with budgetary capital and operating cost estimates. Autonomous mining systems have been deployed for improving mine performance. However, there is a fear of job losses. Adoption of autonomous systems is envisaged to be resisted by major stakeholders in Ghana due to high illiteracy and unemployment. This paper assesses the preparedness of Ghanaian mining stakeholders for the adoption of autonomous systems to Ghana’s surface mining industry. Closed and open-ended questionnaires were administered to mine stakeholders. Respondents generally expressed unwillingness to accept autonomous systems into Ghanaian mines due to fear of increased unemployment. We propose setting up a mining education fund (MEF) for training stakeholders in autonomous mining systems. INTRODUCTION Mining contributes enormously to the sustenance and growth of global and national economies through the provision of raw materials, employment, revenues and foreign exchange (Carvalho, 2017; ICMM, 2017; Cordes et al., 2016; Solomon et al., 2008; Walser, 2000). The International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM, 2014) reported that globally, formal mining employs approximately 2.5 million people. Many resource-rich countries, especially the developing ones, have experienced strong socioeconomic growth propelled by the discovery and extraction of valuable minerals. McMahon and Moreira (2014) reported a positive linkage between mining and sustainable development. They revealed that averagely, resource-rich countries have improved Human Development Index (HDI) scores than countries without mineral resources. Mining remains a crucial industry in Ghana’s economic development (Bermúdez-Lugo, 2016; Amponsah-Tawiah and Dartey-Baah, 2011). Over the years, mining has contributed significantly to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ghana. In 2013, mining accounted for 1.7% of Ghana’s GDP and about 19% of government revenues (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2015). The Ghana Chamber of Mines also reported that mining contributed over 50% of foreign direct investment, 37% of export earnings and 1.1% of direct employment revenues. The US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that 65% of coal, 92% of metals and 96% of industrial minerals are mined using surface mining methods (DOE, 2007). Generally, mining is a capital-intensive venture, with high operating cost, hence there is a constant demand for mining companies to seek efficient cost reduction and production maximization strategies. One strategy being pursued keenly is automation, which is noted to improve productivity, and worker safety at minimal cost. According to Parreira (2013), mining automation involves direct teleoperation whereby workers remotely control the mining process using computers from a control room.

The Energy Act of 1992 has many users of ac-induction motors eyeing premium-efficiency motors with mixed feelings and perhaps some confusion. When the October 1997deadline arrives for compliance with the1992 standards, the winners will be the environment due to reduced need for more power generating plants and the petroleum economy because of reduced dependency on foreign oil. But what will it mean for industrial users? The most obvious benefit is the potential for smaller electricity bills. Motors account for about 64% of the electricity consumed in the United States, at a yearly cost of $112 billion. Every 1% reduction in motor demand cuts 0.64%, or $716 million, off the industry wide bill. Higher efficiency motors also run cooler. This lightens the load on air-conditioning systems and further reduces plant demand. Lower total demand can lead to lower rates by helping to minimize peak-demand surcharges. As rates increase over time, these savings get bigger.

I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

GeoBiotics, LLC and Kumba Resources (Pty) Ltd are jointly developing the GEOCOAT® heap bioleaching technology and downstream processing technology for recovery of zinc from tailings at the Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. This paper outlines the development of a computer simulation for the bioleaching of sphalerite and the downstream processing. Computer modeling has shortened the product development cycle by allowing many flowsheet scenarios to be analyzed negating much of the expensive and time consuming laboratory testing. A model was developed using the Limn® system which is an Excel® Add-In flowsheet drawing and solution engine. Given that most engineers are familiar with Excel® this software is extremely easy to use and has less hidden calculations making model verification much easier.

Based on the 2010-2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accident in the US longwall mines were caused by gateroad roof instability. This can be related to the significant changes in loading conditions that gateroads are subject to from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases, combined with the thinly bedded shale roof, found in many US longwall coal mines. One of the challenges in designing efficient support systems is to understand the roof instability mechanisms along with support-roof interactions under this complex loading condition. Field monitoring of roof displacement and stress changes coupled with detailed analyses using numerical models are well-documented techniques to study the causes of roof instabilities. However, traditional modeling techniques require additional calibration to simulate delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. One alternative modeling technique is the UDEC Bonded Block Method (BBM) where bedded roof and support interactions can be explicitly captured. This paper presents the development of a BBM model of a longwall entry at a 180 m depth of cover with a three-entry gateroad layout along with roof extensometer monitoring results. The models are validated against the monitoring data, showing the potential for BBM numerical models capturing the complex roof and support system interactions to assist with optimizing gateroad layouts and support systems.

SALA MAGNETICS, INC. is now operating a 15 tph continuous high gradient magnetic separator, the SALA-HGMS® Mark III Carousel, as part of a complete mineral processing pilot plant installed at Sala's Cambridge headquarters. The Mark III can generate a maximum magnetic field of 18 kG making it possible to process even weakly magnetic, finely ground ores and ore tailings on a continuous basis at the performance level achieved in Sala's cyclic high gradient magnetic separators. Test results on iron ores, clay, and decoppering of molybdenum concentrate will be discussed. Bench scale tests have been performed on all of these materials using the SALA-HGMS® Model 10-15-20 Cyclic Magnetic Separator. A direct correlation may be made between cyclic and carousel results. Sala's Mark III Carousel high gradient magnetic separator is designed to permit scale-up to machines capable of processing two hundred (200) tons of ore per hour and more.
