The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. The Ortiz Mine is an open pit-heap leach gold operation in central New Mexico processing about 3,100 tonnes (3,400 short tons) per day. It is the initial mining property in the United States developed by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields, PLC. This paper discusses the evolution of the present mining and ore control procedures as adaptions to the characteristics of both the rock being mined and the orebody, and with respect to the fact that mining is done by a contractor.

Nonfatal injuries from slips, trips, and falls (STF) that occur at surface mines can result from inadequate lighting. Mobile equipment operators are among the occupations associated with the nonfatal incidents reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). In addition, getting on/off the equipment (ingress/egress) frequently adds to the highest proportion of nonfatal incidents. Accordingly, researchers at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a field study to investigate lighting on haul trucks and wheel loaderswith regard to glare and illuminance levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). The objective was to determine whether two light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires—a Mr. Beams® (model MB390 Ultrabright) (area luminaire-1) and a NIOSH-developed Saturn (custom-designed for a mine roof bolter study) (area luminaire-2)—could complement a headlamp luminaire. Measured levels of visual tasks, with the headlamp alone and the area luminaires plus the headlamp, demonstrated that illuminance met or exceeded IES-recommended levels. Nevertheless, the area luminaires illuminated a much broader area, which is key to increasing hazard awareness. Discomfort and disability glare were lower with area luminaire-1 than with area luminaire-2. Differences in glare were more noticeable for newer models of haul trucks and loaders featuring updated ingress/egress system designs. This study demonstrates that commercially available luminaires, such as area luminaire-1, are capable of complementing headlamp lighting, and can thus improve a miner’s ability to detect and avoid STF hazards.

In July 1968, P.T. Inco Indonesia was granted a Contract of Work to explore and develop the nickel laterite resources on the southeastern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi. Since 1970, exploration has centred on the deposits at Soroako as the site for initial project development. This paper describes the exploration methods used to evaluate these rather unique laterite deposits, the geology of which is described in the first section of this volume.

"EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. Successful application of these diagrams, however, requires that several considerations be kept in mind to prevent what had been termed as “gross errors” in their calculation and use. In this paper, the aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the STABCAL thermodynamic equilibrium software. A breakdown of the Gibbs’ Phase Rule and how it is used in STABCAL to modify the diagrams is included. The methodology was applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system, and resulting diagrams were compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The complexity of such diagrams increases with every additional component, and competition between species becomes more apparent, as can be seen by curvature in the resulting mass-balanced diagrams. The complete diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is shown. It compares well with spectroelectrochemical measurements from Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies.IntroductionInnovation in the field of processing arsenicbearing copper ores has been of particular interest. Copper arsenic sulfosalt minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennanite (Cu12As4S13) are now frequently prevalent in ore bodies as the oxide and easily leachable sulfides become harder to find. These minerals, unless pretreated somehow, concentrate in copper sulfide flotation processes, in turn concentrating the arsenic levels. Increasing environmental restrictions on arsenic content for smelters makes the hydrometallurgical processing of these concentrates more favorable. While enargite is considered one of the more refractory copper sulfides, more so than chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), there are still several methods, both industrially proven and in development, that are capable of processing these ore types. Alkaline sulfide leaching can be used as a pretreatment method to solubilize arsenic selectively (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp, Takasaki and Shibayama, 2010a, 2010b), or the entire metal content can be leached using acid-type leaches such as acidified ferric sulfate (Dutrizac, 1981; Hackl et al., 1995; Klauber, 2008), or the chloride assisted, CESL (McDonald and Muir, 2007) or nitrogen species catalyzed (Anderson, 2003) processes can be used.As development of these leaching technologies proceed, it is also important to develop an understanding of the mineral thermodynamics. To date, there are numerous studies on the Cu-Fe-S-H2O system, particularly as it relates to chalcopyrite leaching, yet few studies have done on the Cu-As-S-H2O system. Computer-generated EH-pH diagrams have been employed to illustrate the importance of thermodynamic calculations in providing insight into such a system."

"The reactivity of an enargite mineral electrode was investigated spectroelectrochemically under conditions typically found in alkaline sulfide leach solutions, with pH 11-13 and Na2S additions of 50 and 250 gL-1. A bulk enargite electrode was cycled between 0 and -1,000 mV for each set of solution conditions. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine and compare surface formations against species in mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams generated using STABCAL. Previously, it was determined that arsenic could be selectively leached under alkaline conditions at an average solution potential of -300mV, across the pH range 11-13. Operating under such conditions allowed for the selective leaching of arsenic with elemental sulfur formation. From several of the voltammograms obtained during this current testing, the formation of elemental sulfur appeared at increasingly reducing conditions with increasing sulfide concentration. At high concentrations, copper started to dissolve, possibly as a bisulfide complex, reducing the selectivity of the leach, unlike previous studies. However, the presence of the higher sulfide concentration is also anticipated to prevent passivation by consuming any surface formation of elemental sulfur. This study provides insight into the operating parameters of alkaline sulfide leaching in regards to the selectivity of arsenic leaching, as well as guidance for control of reagents and solution potential and, of course, the need for water treatment afterwards.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of arsenic-bearing concentrates have forced operations to consider other solutions. Attempts to hydrometallurgically process enargite (Cu3AsS4) fall into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under basic conditions. The authors believe that the selective leaching of arsenic is more amenable because it produces a solid copper phase, preferably chalcocite (Cu2S) or covellite (CuS) that could then be processed using conventional methods already in place in the copper and gold industries. Potential leaching methods include alkaline sulfide leaching (Achimovicovica et al., 1999; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008a,b; Tongamp et al., 2009 and 2010), hypochlorite leaching (Vinals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihaljovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and acid leaching (Gow et al., 2014b) with or without fine grinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface and increase normally slow leach reaction kinetics (Achimovicova et al., 1999; Balaz et al., 2000; Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006). It is somewhat reassuring to note that the United States has an abundance of coal reserves which can be used to bridge the widening gap between the nation's energy production and consumption. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently established a demonstrated coal reserve base of 434 billion tons. (31)(Figure 1) As can be observed, the major percentage of the reserves is in the West. Although surface coal mining in the West has been gaining increased attention in recent years, western reserves that must be deep mined are significantly greater. Though deep mining activity in the west is very limited and accounts for less than 2% of the annual production, the primary reason, quite probably, is the greater thickness of the seams as compared to those found in the East. Forty-five billion tons of the western demonstrated coal reserve base for underground mining are in seams greater than 10 ft. in thickness. (37) Thick coal seams do not lend themselves readily to extraction with the underground mining methods practiced in the United States today. Experiences from the practices in other countries can serve only as guidelines. Consequently, a concerted effort is necessary to overcome the technical difficulties.

At our annual meeting in St, Louis, Mo. in February 1961, we presented a comprehensive paper (No. 61-B-22) on the subject of "Blending and Handling of Materials for Agglomeration". In that paper you will find a discussion on the difference between "blending" and "mixing". With regard to "blending" we brought out the facts of its usefulness for the preparation o materials in an agglomerated mass to attain controlled chemical and physical uniformity. "Mixing" was discredited as not being useful for the attainment of uniformity of any kind.

Rio Algom Limited are currently undergoing a major expansion of their mining operations in the Elliot Lake area. To date this has involved the increase of output at the Quirke Mine from 4080 to 6350 tonnes per mill day (4500 to 7000 tons), the rehabilitation of the Panel Mine to produce at the rate of 2990 tonnes per mill day (3300 tons) by 1980, and the rehabilitation of the Stanleigh Mine to produce 4540 tonnes per mill day (5000 tons) by 1984. In addition, the planning for the rehabilitation of the Milliken Mine to produce 4990 tonnes per mill day (5500 tons) is now underway. This major expansion is taking place at a time of increasing awareness of occupational health matters and has involved very high capital expenditures and detailed planning related to the ventilation system to endeavour the provision of an acceptable environment. The paper discusses the ventilation systems, established and proposed, and relates them to historical and current data on mine air contaminants.

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. A recent application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by the use of a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection. Details of this approach and the results obtained are described.

Wollastonite, a calcium metasilicate, derives its name from the man who discovered the mineral, Doctor William H. Wollaston, an English scientist. OCCURENCE Occurences of the mineral have been noted in Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Mexico and in the United States in Texas, California, Arizona, and New York. The only commercial deposit now being exploited is at Willsboro, New York. It is mined and processed by the Cabot Corporation whose home offices are in Boston, Massachusetts.

Bauxite ore is used to produce alumina in the Bayer process. For each tonne of alumina produced, around 1 to 1.5 t of bauxite residue is generated, with an estimated 4 Mt of the residue generated worldwide in 2015, four times more in 1985. The residue is currently stocked in tailings dams. A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover sodium hydroxide, which is used as a leaching agent, and reduce its content in the residue. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and passed through press filters. This bauxite residue is known as a source of scandium. Characterization of the residue is an important step to map opportunities worldwide. For this reason, the goal of the present study was to characterize the bauxite residue and evaluate the challenges for scandium recovery. The scandium content was found to be 43 g/t, which makes this bauxite residue attractive for extraction purposes.

Many Third World countries of Third World Africa are well-endowed with minerals, especially gold. Political and economic conditions discouraged interest by Western capital for the several decades since colonial rule. Influence from Eastern Block countries has gone and the left wing orientation widely favored by Third World countries has almost disappeared. Under International Monetary Fund influence, these countries now solicit Western finance to expand their industries. Mining is especially encouraged. The paper describes the financing of some recent developments and examines trends and opportunities in some of the more attractive countries.

A majority of the chemical process industry uses lime in either a powder or liquid form. Engineering and maintenance personnel often face a long and potentially expensive trial-and-error period in order to find the best process equipment to handle lime. Limestone is mined from a quarry in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Then, it is crushed and fed into a kiln at approximately 1,093° C (2,000° F), where the carbon dioxide is burned off (calcining) to make calcium oxide (CaO).

A laboratory method for the simulation of in-situ leaching of uranium was developed under contract to the Interior Department's Bureau of Mines. Simulation tests using sulfuric acid, ammonium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate as reagents and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant were carried out with representative ores from Texas and Wyoming. The tests not only yielded recovery rates of uranium and permeability changes, but also qualitative inferences on the chemical and physical phenomena which occur underground. Leaching with basic solutions was found to be kinetic constrained and with acid solutions, equilibrium constrained. The rapid permeability changes observed when leach solutions were introduced, were probably caused by gas blockages in the packing. Precipitation of calcite or gypsum and the reaction of clay to leach solutions had slow and gradual effect on the packing permeabilities.

In the mining industry, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is used extensively to simulate air flow in underground mines. CFD modeling of pollutant transport in openpit mines is relatively new. Modeling the actual pit geometry of an openpit mine and the open domain is complex. The complexity is primarily due to the faceted geometry of an openpit mine with its numerous associated sharp features. Important issues that are not considered carefully at the geometry level are generally propagated to the subsequent processes. Several challenges and pitfalls are encountered in modeling pollutant transport in openpit mines. These challenges and pitfalls are related to the geometry, meshing, boundary conditions and turbulence modeling parameterization. An appropriate mesh selection is critical. A detailed discussion of the meshing of the domain of an openpit mine is presented in this paper. The selection of an appropriate turbulence model, such as kappa-epsilon (κ-ε), large eddy simulation (LES), Reynolds stress model (RSM), etc., to obtain the best possible solution is equally significant. This paper discusses the various challenges in modeling the pollutant transport process in an openpit and some of the approaches adopted to address these challenges.

When a new tunnelling project starts, it has been a vital tradition for decades to cast and erect master rings horizontally on a flat surface to demonstrate the compliance with dimensional tolerances. Some tenders ask for the erection of two or even three rings upon each other or repeated master ring erections at intervals throughout the project. Especially for large diameters, this is a challenging and risky task for the workforce in the segment factory. A truck-mounted crane is often necessary, and in some cases it can take up to a week to complete a master ring. The concept of virtual rings has the potential to replace this tradition by assembling master rings digitally instead of physically. This is based on a best-fit approach, considering the 3D coordinates from laser tracker measurements of segments or segment moulds. Building a virtual ring, a sub-millimeter accuracy can be achieved, the alignment of neighboring circumferential and ring joints observed, and the fit of bolt holes checked. The traditional method, on the other hand, is discussed controversially despite the significant amount of work and risks—particularly as the horizontal position of the ring and absence of gaskets do not simulate the reality in the excavated tunnel. This paper will highlight the technical aspects of virtual rings, as well as their pros and cons, illustrated by a case study from London Thames Tideway where a total of 30 physical master rings could be replaced by virtual rings.

During 1960, the controversy over percentage depletion reached the level of debate between presidential candidates. Nixon took the position that he would not tamper with the status quo in this matter. Kennedy took the position that he was willing to take a fresh look at the issues involved. Kennedy's position appears to have been based upon two premises: (1) new sources of federal revenue may be needed; and (2) current depletion rates, even if sound in principle, may be too high and, therefore, inequitable. The latter premise constitutes the basis for the claims that depletion allowances are simply "loopholes" of tax avoidance. Very probably the controversy over percentage depletion will remain in the political limelight during most of the coming decade. It is quite possible that the current depletion rates, at least those for oil and gas, will be reduced during this period. The aim of this paper is to isolate the complex causes of this mounting opposition to percentage depletion.

(Matt. 23:23). I want to talk about "The Weightier Matters of Law." In a situation where big government is trying to have an effect on even small details of a work activity, otherwise simple situations become complex. Regulations are written to such detail that constant compliance with strict interpretations can be a nightmare--not to mention off the target of the intended purpose for the regulation. The objective of this study was to assess the health and environmental impacts of fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) of coal, specifically as applied to baseload generation of electrical energy by utilities. The study* was a short-term effort that based its analyses on information derived from the experience of the group or quickly obtained from the literature. The approach was to compare Atmospheric Fluidized-Bed Combustion (AFBC) and Pressurized Fluidized-Bed Combustion (PFBC) with two current technologies: low-sulfur coal combustion (LSC) and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) used with high-sulfur coals. A wet-limestone process was selected as the FGD technology. The impacts compared involved not only health and environment but also sociology, resource use, and dollar cost. Conditions for comparison were centered around a nominal date of 1988, when initial operation of commercial AFBC plants may occur. The PFBC has a later introductory date, a nominal 1995 (its impacts relative to other competitive technologies now in the R&D stages were not compared.)
