By its nature, seismology has been a data intensive field since the first digital computers were introduced in the 1950s. The first empirical models were developed in the same period and are still widely used today, for instance, the Gutenberg-Richter frequency-magnitude relationship (Gutenberg and Richter, 1956). Machine learning (ML) methods make it possible to redefine these empirical models using large datasets and examining considerably more parameters, where their significance to the problem being addressed is methodically and repeatably evaluated using robust statistical methods. In this paper we develop a simple logistic model for the short-term prediction of seismic events above a threshold magnitude from a mine’s event catalogue comprising more than a million events with 14 basic parameters from which a pool of over 830 derived parameters was developed, covering a series of 11 precursory time windows. The logistic model was fitted stepwise using SAS with α = 0.025 for both entry and acceptance. 25 variables from the pool met the acceptance criterion. The findings were surprising in that parameters a rock engineer or seismologist might have expected to be the most significant in the logistic model were not; instead, it was an increase in standard deviation of the immediately-prior seismic magnitudes that carried the most weight, followed by the average maximum source displacement and median apparent volume change. These findings make intuitive sense because the increasing scatter of the magnitude shows an increasing number of large events being recorded that could be indicative of instability in the system that could lead to large events. The model is rudimentary and enormous scope exists for more exploration in terms of data pre-processing, model types, and response variable definitions.

In Mineral Processing, the objective of most processes is the separation of mixtures of minerals, which are originally associated in composite particles. Feed preparation processes grinding for instance, which take place before beneficiation or separation processes do not usually break particles at the boundary between mineral phases. They produce composite ("middlings") as well as liberated particle. It is therefore necessary, in a particulate system, to determine the proportion of particles which are liberated as well as, ideally, the size distribution of minerals which remain associated in composite particles. Up to now, there has been a lack of experimental techniques to characterize completely composite particulate systems. Heavy liquid separation which is commonly used to obtain information of this type can only be applied to simple binary cases for which one mineral has a low density (lower than e.g 2.8 ). The technique which is proposed in this paper involves the measurement of parameters on polished sections of particles mounted in a matrix, and the use of mathematical transformations to reconstruct in three-dimensions the information obtained from these measurements .

The vision-based approach to process control involving fine particles in harsh on-line environments is discussed in this paper. The sensor equipment at the process location, consisting of a light source and a CCD camera provides RS-170 B&W video output. The video can be seen on a process monitor in the control room and is sent to a computer based Vision Processor. The Vision Processor contains a video digitizer and Canty developed software that extracts process information. The iron mine application controls thickener agent feed rate and thus settling pond overflow clarity. The sensor is mounted in the overflow flume of the outdoor settling pond and is used year around in the Minnesota weather. Alternate control system needs a low flow water sample which is subject to freezing in winter. The computer based vision processor provides 4-20 mA analog outputs for real time control as well as file archive for a history record.

A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.SoC (O°F). Other areas where FCA has found utility has been de-icing conveyor belts, idler, idler arms and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

Albert Einstein once said, ?the important thing is not to stop questioning.? In the mining industry, a lack of inquisitiveness may lead to a blissful ignorance but it certainly will not increase efficiencies. While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. Understandably, when working in the middle of Canada?s oil sands, where trucks operate around the clock every day of the year, it is nearly impossible to pull the nose from the grindstone long enough to provide thorough analysis. But, fortunately, some manufacturers/inventors have assisted by examining the process and the ensuing headaches within this application.

The Flotaire Flotation Cell is a simple, efficient hydraulic/pneumatic Flotation Cell that has no moving parts. It is normally used in conjunction with a surfactant (frother) in which case the combination is known as "The Flotaire System". On many ores, metallurgical efficiencies are substantially increased and operating costs reduce. For example, in floating phosphate rock, it is not unusual for BPL recovery to be increased more than 10%, the major increase being due to floating coarse phosphate, up to 14 mesh, and the difficult to float phosphate. Substantial improvements have also been made on coal, mica, vermiculite, kaolin, barite, copper, etc.

Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. The fundamental importance of comminution by high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology to efficiently increase the particle surface area lies in lower energy and water consumptions for iron ore pellet feed production. This study compared the ball wet milling process with the innovative HPGR processing technology for hematite-goethite ores. Green-pellet balling and induration processes were simulated on the bench and pilot scales.

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. Stillwater Mining Company’s, Nye Operation has been producing PGM concentrate since 1987.Several expansions have allowed for increasing capacity from the initial rate of 500 tons per day, to its present capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The expansions were performed with minimal impact upon production and maximum utilization of the existing equipment. The latest expansion incorporates a 6’ X 18’ SAG mill, 13’ X 20’ Ball mill, pebble crusher, rougher flotation cells, 1250 Hp tertiary grinding mill, middling and scavenger flotation cells, and cleaner column flotation cells. This paper will describe the concentrator flow sheet, and controls for improved concentrator performance.

Photogrammetry and laser scanning has been employed at a number of Newmont mine sites to mitigate risks associated with conventional structural mapping, determining the geometry of voids from old underground workings, and generating topography in areas of slope instability. Laser scanning has also been used to evaluate as-built pit slope configurations with respect to design assumptions, operational practices, and rock fall potential. Recently, remote sensing applications carried on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) were used to generate base topography at some Newmont sites. UAV are generally more convenient and less expensive and can be utilized in areas where cloud cover prevents manned aerial photography missions. This paper discusses these applications, and provides commentary on their benefits and limitations based on recent experience.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain Ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 kilometers. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fibre in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd. Of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This paper will present the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits will be outlined. Subsequent work by other companies will be mentioned, but not described in any detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., who have been involved in the project, particularly Ramon Farmer, N. G. Comer, and A. W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this report are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program.

In situ stress on the scale of a tunnel or mine may be distorted by geologic structures. The resulting variations of in situ stress have a direct bearing on the potential for mining-induced seismicity. New evidence from the Lucky Friday Mine collected by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers, as well as a review of case studies, demonstrates that in situ stress variations affect the spatial distribution of mining-induced seismicity. Although overcore stress measurements have been useful in these studies, they are too expensive and, depending on conditions, may be too difficult, to use routinely in mapping stress variations. However, information from borehole and raisebore breakouts; deformation of mine openings; and patterns of seismicity, ground control problems, and rock burst damage can be used to build a stress database. This database can then be used in con-junction with maps of mine structure and geology and models of rock mass behavior to build a map of in situ stress variations. Such a map provides a means to anticipate patterns of mining-induced seismicity that are likely to be encountered and, hence, provide a means for planning appropriate measures to ameliorate rock-burst hazards.

Mine gob has long been a safety concern in the coal industry due to the air flowing through the gob area. Therefore, knowledge of the airflow distribution and locations of hazard zones in longwall gob is important to prevent and control these hazards. Due to the inaccessibility of mine gob, many numerical studies have been performed to simulate gob air leakage using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs, but most of the studies isolated the gob from the mine ventilation network (MVN) with only predefined pressure boundary conditions. The MVN is, in fact, not static in a dynamic longwall mining process, and it consequently changes the boundary conditions and the gob flow field (GFF). Therefore, the MVN should be incorporated in the CFD model to prescribe the transient boundaries. However, it is very challenging to couple the 1D MVN and the 2D/3D GFF to make the mine ventilation simulation realistic. This research uses a proposed novel finite tube method (FTM) to couple the MVN and GFF. In the FTM, the GFF is discretized into a finite number of flow tubes, each of which is formed by two adjacent streamlines. These tubes connect the MVN into a new coupling network. Based on the FTM, a model for gas migration in gob is established for delineating the hazard zones of explosive methane concentration and spontaneous combustion.

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental program conducted to characterize the moment-rotation behavior of skewed flat radial joints from large diameter (45 ft) tunnel lining. Both positive and negative joint moment-rotation behaviors were measured experimentally using two-segment joint combination assemblies. The results are compared to closed form methodologies used by designers, e.g., the Janssen method. The differences in observed and model behavior are discussed within the context of design practice.

"INTRODUCTION The Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) project, located in the north-east New Territories of Hong Kong, will form the seventh land crossing between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK) and Shenzhen in China (Figure 1). The BCP project comprises an 11km long dual two-lane trunk road linking the border crossing facility to the existing road infrastructure in HK and when completed it will facilitate future regional development and alleviate frequent traffic congestion at the existing Boarder control points.In December 2013 Dragages Hong Kong (a member of the Bouygues Construction Group) was awarded the 5.4km long Contract 2 section of the project, including the 4.8km long Lung Shan Tunnels, by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the HK SAR. To overcome the difficult ground conditions anticipated along the Contract 2 section of the project the tunnels will be constructed using mechanical and drill and blast (D&B) excavation techniques together with a 14.1m diameter multi-mode Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Land constraints imposed on the project alignment require that the final 500m section at the northern end of the Lung Shan tunnels, under Princess Hill (Figure 2), takes an almost 90 degree turn towards the north. The resulting 354m radius curve restricts the sight-line of road users to below the minimum 110m at 80km/hr hence, the internal span of the tunnels needs to be increased from 12.6m, in the standard straight section, to 15.4m in this curved section to accommodate a widened shoulder which will provide the required sight-line distance."

Construction projects may be delivered under one contract package or multiple packages divided by discipline, geographic location, or other characteristics. Dividing the construction into contract bid packages is called contract packaging, and is a vital and strategic aspect of effectively delivering tunneling projects. The process of contract packaging considers many factors, including the type of project, location, and owner?s priorities. This paper describes the key facets of the contract packaging process used recently on several tunnel projects, reports, where possible, on the success of the process, and concludes with recommendations for applying this process to achieve the right contract package.

Mining corporations have spread their operations worldwide in the last few decades. The reason behind widening operations geographically can be seen as it being part of a risk diversification strategy. Given that the technical, financial and social risks are high, favorable deposits, taxation regimes and legislative frameworks create incentives for international mining operations. On the other hand, international mining activities add the risks of permitting, investing, operating and decommissioning to the corporations. These risks could emerge from defaulting, corruption, resource nationalism, social license to operate, and political and legislative uncertainties and instabilities.

Of all the industrial clay minerals, attapulgite probably enjoys the widest variety of applications. A review published over three years ago by Haden and Schwint (18) cited some 80 individual uses, a list which continues to grow. In its near half-century of commercial life, attapulgite has received a generous share of research study and patent development effort, both on the part of producers as well as consumers. This work has been divided between understanding the mineral's structure or properties and applying it to specific end-uses. Naturally, information gained from the former has pointed toward opportunities in the latter. References of particular significance are cited throughout the text. Attapulgite's variety of uses derives from the unique three-dimensional structure and needle-shaped particle form of this crystalline hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Its inherent colloidal and sorptive properties are well known, and distinguish it from its sister clay minerals. Attapulgite is characterized by its high surface area, porosity, sorptivity, and decolorizing power. Its slips or slurries are viscous and thixotropic, however, unlike bentonite are not flocculated by electrolytes. In Table I are compared the general properties of attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolin. The properties in Table I are documented in greater detail by the wealth of scientific literature which has been published on the composition (14)(15), structure (6)(16), surface (16)(4)(22)(24), adsorption (31)(4)(5)(25), rheology (10-11)(12)(13)(26)(27)(32), plasticity (30) (31), and chemistry (23)(3)(7) of attapulgite. Attapulgite is the principal mineral constituent (70 to 80%) of attapulgite clay as it is commercially produced in the Georgia-Florida area of the United States. As mined, this clay also contains 10 to 1S% montmorillonite, sepiolite, and other clays; 4 to 8% quartz, and 1 to 5% calcite or dolomite. The fossil resins of certain western coals are of significance and of sufficient value as a chemical commodity to justify a fossil resin industry. At the present time these valuable fossil resin resources, worth more than $0.50/lb as a chemical commodity, are being burned as fuel for electric power generation. This waste of our fossil resin resources corresponds to a loss in revenue of $200 million per year -equivalent to the value of the coal itself! Improved process technology for the recovery of fossil resin is under development and includes selective flotation of fossil resin from fine coal streams and solvent refining of the fossil resin flotation concentrate to produce a premium resin product. The most recent developments in process technologies are discussed with respect to separation efficiency and product quality. It is clear that the development of a fossil resin industry should not be limited by process technology.
