This paper outlines the methodology and results pertaining to the simulation of the U.S. coal industry in the context of an integrated, time-dynamic model of Long-Range Energy Developments and Supplies (LORENDAS). By way of background we will present first an overview of the overall LORENDAS model structure. We will, then, outline the characteristics of the formulation and data used for the representation of the U.S. coal industry. Finally, a series of model results will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on the long term projections of coal production and distribution under different basic economic and/or political scenarios.

The $980m (€750m) Dublin Port Tunnel, Europe’s biggest urban highway tunnel project, was opened in December 2006. The culmination of this immense scheme is set to transform the environment, mobility and road safety of Ireland’s capital city. This paper summarizes the key aspects of a project linking both sequential and parallel construction of individual tunnels and describes various approaches to bored, mined and pre-support cut-and-cover tunneling in a wide variety of ground types and depth of cover. Examples of innovative approaches to deal with structural and geotechnical problems while maintaining full operation of both road and rail traffic and the integrity of properties in a dense urban corridor are described.

"History can provide many answers with regard to what today’s mining industry looks like and how we got to where we are today. It has always been self-evident that safety has to be given the highest priority and, throughout history, many mine workers have been injured, become ill and have even sacrificed their lives due to the way in which attempts have been made to extract the ore, often due to ignorance of the dangers being faced. In more recent stages of history we have seen certain dangers being compensated by means of higher wages and bonus systems in order to have the work carried out: one example of this is when the rock heating method was employed and the men who first went underground to put out the fires that were burning, were paid extra. The working conditions, to which these people were exposed, with smoke-filled closed spaces, shortened their life expectancy considerably and today we can ask ourselves whether it is really possible to value these efforts just by higher wages. In all mines worldwide the working environment has been improved and many mining companies have a zero vision where work-related injuries and accidents are concerned. Despite this, incidents of varying severity still occur and a continuous improvement process and ongoing training is necessary in order to constantly minimise risks and improve the working environment. Atlas Copco takes this into account in all its development and we not only review our own production units but also the needs of our customers, with regard to the machinery that is produced in order to cater for customers’ safety and production objectives. Underground mining probably started at the beginning of the 11th century when people with modest tools tried to extract ores that were present in the bedrock. Methodology has developed enormously over the years with a strong focus on increased efficiency and higher production. In different parts of the world the development is driven forwards at different rates depending on which controlling factors are regarded as necessary. Political decisions, profit goals and productivity have partly controlled the development, but the greatest factor where improvement is concerned still remains with increased understanding of the totality. During more than 1000 years since underground mining has been conducted, all individuals at all levels have constantly improved their expertise and the human element has been of great importance with regard to the development that has been made, even though technology often occupies a leading role when we describe the improvements made."

"Collecting mineral resources from the seabed using a seafloor crawling robot is the firststep in the mining operation. The second-step is lifting the collected ore up to the water surface. For lifting through a riser pipe, prevention of pipe clogging (flow assurance) and economic and eco-friendly up-transferring is of the utmost concern.During collection of mineral ores, the production rate can be highly variable because of the variability in the distribution of the mineral deposit, variations in seafloor topography, fluctuations robot speed, and variations in performance of the mining robot, etc. Direct transfer of the collected ore to the riser pipe might cause unpredictable and serious problems such as over-loading of the lift pump, reduction in the life of the equipment, pipe clogging, severe increase of down-time, critical damage of equipment, further propagation of damages, and total failure after all.As a counter measure to these potential problems, a buffer station has been adopted, which is capable of storing the collected ore for a certain time and simultaneously regulating the transfer of the ore into the riser pipe. A pilot buffer has been developed by KRISO/KIOST (see Fig. 1)."

A field inventory was made of the mineral, geologic, geothermal, and groundwater resources of three geologically recent lava fields in the desert of Oregon. The term "resource" was applied with care: a "resource" must have particular value or worth, although it need not be economically viable. The spectacular volcanic features of the area have particular scientific and general interest and thus constitute geologic resources. The mineral endowment, mostly occurrences of low unit value such as stone and cinders, in large part are not resources, due to market conditions, regulations, and other factors. These and other conclusions will be used by the Bureau of Land Management in its multiple land use planning process for the area.

Design and construction of temporary shafts for underground facilities often require evaluation of bottom stability due to rupture (blow-ins) caused by water pressure acting on a bottom plug. This paper provides an overview of shaft bottom stability evaluation methods for the case of a relatively watertight soil plug which overlies an artesian aquifer. Methods of considering plug perimeter shear, plug buckling and pressure relief are discussed. Minimum factors of safety are suggested. Future use of the shaft subgrade is also considered. Bottom plug failure case histories at several shafts are evaluated. This paper should be useful to project designers, ground support system design engineers and contractors involved with construction of shafts for underground facilities

Estimating the power draw of a ball mill is of great importance from both operational and control standpoints. There are many factors that affect the power draw, and its prediction is particularly difficult in an operating plant. The important factors that affect power draw are the mill dimensions and operating parameters. Although mill dimensions remain the same for any given mill, the operational factors, such as ball load, mill filling and mill speed, may vary. This makes the modeling effort extremely cumbersome. It is for this reason that an artificial neural network is considered for the development of a black-box-type model to predict power draw. In this work, a total of 48 sets of plant data are used. Using these data, a neural network is built and trained. The trained network is used to predict power that is found to be in good agreement with operating mill power for many situations. In addition, the results of simulations are also com- pared to those obtained from a discrete-element method- based power-draw model.

The concept of using fluid dense media to separate heavy ore constituents from the lighter gangue dates back to 1858, when it was patented by Sir Henry Bessemer. Its use in coal did not begin until after 1917, however, when Chance invented a process (which bears his name) in which lighter coal floats in a suspension of fine sand in water while heavier refuse sinks. Conklin used fine magnetite in suspension as a medium for floating anthracite in 1922, DuPont designed a plant employing organic liquids in 1936, and Belknap used a solution of calcium chloride (which Bessemer had suggested, among other media) in 1937. Separation of magnetic media by magnetic separators from the suspensions in which they were carried was introduced in a Butler Brothers ore concentrator pilot plant in 1937. The media first used were crushed steel and various grades of ferrosilicon. Since 1940, when American Cyanamid used magnetic separators to recover and clean magnetite in a coal washing circuit, virtually all heavy medium circuits have been of that type. As long as static baths are employed, as they are in the processes above, coal smaller than 9.5 mm or 6.4 mm cannot be cleaned economically in heavy medium. The settling velocities of the fine material are very low, and consequently the time required to separate the lighter coal from the heavier refuse becomes excessive. In addition, stray currents in the vessel and the upward velocities induced to keep media solids in suspension affect the finer solids to the degree that physical size becomes a more important factor than specific gravity.

Tunneling in carbonate sedimentary rocks such as lime stones and dolomites can be difficult when solution channels or voids are anticipated. Addressing the risk aspects associated with these formations can be done effectively through the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) by properly characterizing the ground and ensuring that the Owner?s and the Contractor?s interests are represented and protected. This paper presents a review of tunneling difficulties in these rocks and includes a review of site investigations, geologic characterization, and presentation in the GBR. Key construction issues are also discussed, including appropriate excavation technology, mechanisms of face support and groundwater control, and quantifying grout takes.

The most common experimental approach of studying one variable at a time while holding all others constant is extremely inefficient. Use of statistical methods enables engineers and scientists to obtain meaningful information with the fewest experiments, reducing cost and wasted effort. In particular, the Taguchi method can be more efficient than traditional full factorial experiment designs, as it can study more variables with fewer nuts, and it is more robust against process "noise." Taguchi designs are also simple to formulate and the results can be analyzed by simple PC spreadsheets. The role and benefits of using the Taguchi method in experiments to develop and optimize processes is discussed.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) study in the Russian Exploration Area at the northern equatorial Mid Atlantic Ridge began after signing the contract with International Seabed Authority in 2012. In order to evaluate the SMS resources in the course of exploration the major and rare metals with economic value should be determined. The evaluation is based on geochemistry and mineralogy and particularly on the type of rare metals occurrence in the SMS. As a case study research of the Semyenov cluster of SMS deposits have been conducted.

As per most other earth science engineering problems, the underground coal geotechnical environment and the way in which roof and rib support interacts with the rock mass are complex issues. While the problem should not be oversimplified (i.e., the dominant failure mechanisms or critical data input parameters should not be ignored), without question judicious simplification is at the heart of all good engineering design. Engineers play a vital role in supplying the world with solutions and products; however it is crucial that engineers make practical and readily useable contributions. One way to ensure this is to employ simplification in the engineering process.

MARTA, The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is building a 53 mile heavy rail transit system to serve the City of Atlanta. Phase A of the Rail System, consisting of approximately 14 miles of at-grade, aerial and subway construction is underway. Metropolitan Atlanta lies in the Piedmont Geologic province of Georgia and is underlain by rocks of essentially granitic and gneissic nature. The soils encountered are primarily silty sands which are in-place weathering products of the parent rock and exhibit their relic structure. In general, these materials have presented no unique construction problems other than those created-by proximity of manmade structures, local availability of ground water, and top of rock elevation. The subway sections of primary interest in this paper consist of hardrock and soft ground tunnels and extensive cut-and-cover sections. The cut-and-cover construction includes excavations as deep as 80 feet. Temporary support systems in these deep excavations consist of soldier pile-timber-lagging or soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) walls with internal bracing or tiebacks. In shallow cut-and-cover sections, where right-of-way economics permitted, slopes were laid back partially or fully to reduce or eliminate the need for bracing systems. One of the several problems facing society today is that of disposing of its solid waste. Each year this nation spends approximately 4.5 billion dollars to collect, transport and dispose of some 360 million tons of domestic and industrial solid waste. Although considerable sums of time and money have been spent in researching various techniques for solid waste disposal, it is presently agreed that sanitary landfilling represents the most economic and universally adaptable solution to the problem of solid waste disposal. However, regardless of the factors favoring sanitary landfilling as the waste disposal method of choice, it should be recognized as carrying with it a potential for the degradation of ground- and surfacewater resources. Through an interdisciplinary effort regulations were promulgated during 1971 in the State of Iowa to govern sanitary disposal projects. Consistent with a set of rationales developed to preserve environmental quality, these regulations set forth hydrologic and geologic standards designed to protect Iowa's water resources. Minimum requirements have been outlined in the regulations through which the natural favorability of potential landfill sites may be evaluated. Natural favorability is primarily defined in terms of the hydrologic and geologic relationships between a proposed landfill site and those in the locality of the site. The regulations specify that leakage from a landfill to a subcropping aquifer must be less than 0.04 cu ft/day/sq ft at the base of the landfill. This factor is offered to quantify the maximum allowable leakage for all sites in unconsolidated sequences underlain by subcropping bedrock aquifers, Based on groundwater research in Iowa, the assumption is made that 50 feet of till will be sufficient to inhibit the downward flow of liquids from a landfill into bedrock aquifers. This assumes a difference of no greater than 40 feet in hydrostatic head between the water table in the unconsolidated sequence and that in the bedrock aquifer. Owing to the fact that bedrock aquifers in many areas of the state are mantled by less than 50 feet of till the regulations provide for site modification, through engineering, to meet the specified leakage standard, In such instances the leakage factor is evaluated by means of the generalized Darcy's Law Q = PIA where:

As part of the British Steel Corporation?s development plan during the 1970?s, it was decided to concentrate its bulk steelmaking processes based on the BOS at 4 major Works with access to deepwater ore terminals, for the supply of high-grade imported ores. These 4 sites were at: - 1. Rarenscraig Works in Scotland where the ore terminal would be hilt at Hunterston on the west coast some 50 miles away. Bavenscraig was already an integrated Works but suffered from having to discharge ore 27 Glasgow tenxinus on the River Clyde, which could only accommodate vessels up to 25,000 tonnes. In the future, ore was to be unloaded at Runterston and shipped by a rail-link into Ravenscraig, The new ore terminal would have the potential to unload vessels up to 300,000 tonnes. - 2. Port Talbot Works in south Vales where the existing harbour was developed to discharge large ore carriers. This again was an existing Integrated Works and the benefits of the new harbour also applied to Llanwern Works which was another integrated Works some 50 dies to the east, which would now receive ore from Port Talbot.

Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.

Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner's exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau's Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested. The Climax Mine is a panel caving mine which has had a long history of incidents of severe ground control problems. The nature of the ore deposit, which lends itself to the caving meth- of of production, a1 so makes the mine susceptible to large scale stress concentrations which are referred to as ?weight? problems. These problems have increased with increased production and also with expansion to deeper mine levels. During the past twenty years the mine has had to learn to cope with these problems in order to remain in operation. A number of practical guidelines and useful techniques have emerged from these efforts. The purpose of this paper is to share a few of these ideas. The Mine is located near Leadville, Colorado on the continental divide at an elevation of 3450 meters. The ore body is a large low grade deposit of disseminated molybdenum sulfide. It measures about 1200 to 1600 meters in diameter and it had an original depth of about 660 mters. The Mine has been in operation since 1918 and the massive nature of the ore body together with its blocky, highly fractured condition made it natural for the caving system to have been adopted for production at an early date. Open pit mining was started in 1973. The total plant has a capacity of more than 50 thousand tons per day, and more than 400 million tons of reserves at an average grade of 0.310 percent molybdenum disulfide remain to be produced.
