It has been observed that the productivity of ferromanganese furnaces, and the stability of metal and slag compositions, vary considerably according to the type of coke used as reductant. However, the desired properties of coke for optimum furnace performance are not well understood. In this investigation, the behaviour of four cokes, which exhibited a wide range of performance in ferromanganese production, was investigated by means of laboratory simulations of reducing conditions in the furnace. The Stationary Charge in Controlled Environment (SCICE) technique was used to simulate the conditions in the furnace shaft. Batches of raw materials, mixed in the same proportions as used in practice, were heated at fixed rates to 900, 1100 and 1300°C then cooled. The mass loss was used as a measure of the degree of reduction. Conditions in the lower part of the furnace were simulated by means of melt-reduction experiments in which lumps of coke were drilled out to form crucibles in which enriched ferromanganese slags were reduced at 1500 and 1550°C then cooled. An examination of the raw materials and the cooled, reacted charges using a variety of analytical and characterization techniques enabled the sequence of reaction and changes in morphology of the raw materials to be followed. This enabled an understanding of the behaviour of the cokes during reduction to be developed, which was then used to explain the observed performance of the cokes in practice. By relating the observed behaviour of the cokes in the laboratory tests to measurable properties of the unreacted cokes and to their observed performance in practice, it was shown that to achieve high productivity and good furnace performance, cokes should be selected to have moderately high reactivity towards CO2 (Boudouard reactivity) relative to conventional iron blast furnace cokes.

The position of Australia as a continuing long-term supplier of mineral sands, and their upgraded products, has been reinforced with the discovery of the extensive mineral reserves in the Murray Basin, an area covering parts of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. A major impurity in the Murray Basin is chromium, mainly present in ilmenite concentrates as individual chrome spinel grains. Magnetizing roast treatments are being evaluated as a means of removing the chrome spinel impurity from the ilmenite and as a result of the roast and magnetic separation treatments, the chrome spinels can be expected to be concentrated in the non-magnetic reject fractions. It is from these fractions that attempts were made in this study to recover a chromium-rich product by magnetic fractionation and by application of flotation. The high gauss non-magnetic rejects from the roasting of a primary and a secondary ilmenite fraction were magnetically fractionated to obtain a product with 40.5 and 28.7 per cent Cr2O3,respectively. From the high gauss non-magnetic reject from the roasting of a primary ilmenite, flotation produced a chromium-rich product assaying 29.5 wt per cent Cr2O3at 69.0 per cent recovery. In another test a magnetic fraction assaying 32.9 wt per cent Cr2O3was floated to yield a chromium-rich product with 39.7 wt per cent Cr2O3at 96.4 per cent recovery. X-ray diffraction patterns of all the products indicated that the spinel concentrated was a ferroan magnesiochromite with rutile, ilmenite and hematite as impurities. Since all products were from a single pass, further processing can be expected to remove the impurity minerals and yield higher grade products. The material produced from the Murray Basin ilmenites in this study had similar compositions to commercial chromite ores, except for titania levels that were much higher. The high titania levels were due to residual rutile in the products, but it is expected that this can be removed with further processing. The mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin are scattered over a wide area and the amount of chromite that may be produced from each of these deposits is unlikely to be sufficient to support an export market. Consequently, any chromite produced in the Murray Basin will most likely need to be processed locally to value added products for a niche market such as chemicals production. High-pressure waterjet technology is proposed as an alternative tool for selective underground mining of high-grade ore sections in stratiform orebodies showing a preferred ?bottom? or ?top? enrichment such as the Witwatersrand reefs and the Bushveld Complex platiniferous reefs. This technique, utilizing known mining technology together with more advanced machinery and additives as used in industrial and cleaning applications, may lead to an increased life-of-mine (LOM) for mining operations. A series of experiments was successfully carried out in a laboratory on Witwatersrand quartzite material, indicating acceptable cutting performance. Mining volumes by selectively cutting of reef portions are considered to be comparable to traditional drilling and blasting. Economic advantages of waterjet mining include energy savings due to the lower quantity of gangue rock to be hoisted to surface, as well as savings by a decrease in the usage of blasting materials. Capital expenditure of waterjet cutting, if applied on a broad scale, could be lower in the long term than that of conventional drilling and blasting methods. Mining by the application of high-pressure waterjet technology could become a competitive ?green technology? improving the economics and safety of labour-intensive mining operations. This paper suggests that waterjet cutting at an industrial scale can become a routine hard-rock mining technique in the future. Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. The objective with mine planning is to consistently deliver production conforming to quality and quantity requirements throughout the life of the mine. The complexity of the operational context of the modern mine extends far beyond the actual production actions and there is a need to find ways of analysing and managing this extended environment. A well-established approach to handling complex situations rely on the creation of representative models that use classification and visualization strategies. An example of the use of a classification scheme is the periodic table of the elements. All physical matter can be expressed as combinations of basic elements. Not only is the periodic table useful in classifying and identifying matter but it can also be used for the prediction of the properties of unknown matter and compositions of elements.

The use of differences in specific gravity between minerals to separate them has long been utilized in the extractive industries. The environmental and cost benefits of the commercialized forms of these processes are well understood and widely used. Gravity concentration is used inter alia in the primary beneficiation of gold, diamonds, coal, tin, ferrous metal ores and andalusite. The potential for economic loss due to poor performance of these gravity processes is significant, but diverse in manifestation and regular process monitoring can prevent or at least reduce these losses. The measurement of performance of gravity processes has always presented a challenge, due primarily to the masses of material involved and the physical nature of the processes, generally typified by long reporting time, and hazardous materials (such as Tetrabromoethane) for float and sink type tests. The development of density tracers has improved this situation, however recovery of these tracers from the process streams created the next set of challenges, requiring significant manpower to physically remove tracers from product dewatering screens. Additions to these tracers (magnetic or x-ray fluorescent) eased the recovery mechanism issues but made them much more expensive to produce, hence operators became concerned about losses during process testing. In addition, magnetic recovery of smaller size tracers by a magnet suspended above a loaded screen panel is still problematic. The development of new low cost magnetic tracers has improved statistical significance of tracer tests, as the tracers themselves can be bought and used in much larger quantities, whilst still remaining economically viable. Coupled with the development of effective magnetic recovery technology, such as the Gekko MagScreen, for even fine sized tracers, on-line, continuous tracer testing is now becoming a reality. Whilst the development of high technology radio frequency detection tracer systems continues, enabling the real time measurement of the process and interpretation of results, miniaturization and recovery of these tracers, which is critical given their costs at present, remains an issue. "There is large electricity generation potential in discard coal, both in stockpiles and current arisings. Power stations with a combined capacity of up to 18 GW electrical (GWe) could be fuelled by discard coal. Modern circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) boilers, with capital costs comparable to equivalent pulverized fuel (PF) boilers, are capable of utilizing discard coal at a high efficiency while reducing sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions though the use of limestone sorbent for ‘in-situ’ capture.A detailed economic assessment of the feasibility of electricity generation from discard coal, comprising material and energy balances and the construction of a discounted cash flow (DCF) table, shows that it is also potentially attractive from an economic perspective. A base case analysis shows positive net present values (NPVs) and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 21.4%. Sensitivity analyses on critical parameters show that the economic viability is heavily dependent on parameters such as coal cost and the value of electricity. The project becomes unattractive above a coal price of approximately R300 per ton and at an electricity value below approximately 59c per kilowatt-hour (kWh).Site- and project-specific information such as the delivered cost of coal, location and efficacy of sorbents, and effective value of the electricity produced can be used as input to the economic analysis to evaluate siting options and sorbent source options for such a power station."

An investigation into the use of impinging stream (jet) reactors for the leaching of a free milling ore produced an increase in gold recovery by 10% while decreasing leaching time by up to 90%.Tests on refractory ores demonstrate no apparent improvement in recovery. However, leaching kinetics are dramatically increased when these ores are subjected to jet reaction prior to agitation.

The susceptibility of a low-alloy steel that has been hardened and tempered-826 M40 (EN26)-to embrittlement by strain aging during service was simulated by artificial aging of specimens at 100°C. It was found that the brittle transition temperature of both monotonic and cyclically strained material was increased by only about 25°C as a result of strain aging. It is concluded that the susceptibility of low-alloy steels in the hardened, tempered condition is less than that of low-carbon steel, and that such steels qualify for exemption of the periodic 'annealing' required by the Mines and Works Act.

[Zr(C9H6NO)4]?(HCON(CH3)2)?(H2O), where (C9H6NO) = 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxH), was synthesized and characterized. This tetrakis-coordinated zirconium complex crystallized in the triclinic crystal system (Pi, Z=2) along with water and N,N?-dimethylformamide(DMF) solvate in the asymmetric unit. The metal atom is surrounded by four N,O-donating bidentate ox-ligands that are arranged around the metal centre to give a square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron with a small distortion towards a dodecahedral geometry. Crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular interactions of adjacent oxine ring systems in neighbouring molecules, as well as hydrogen bonding of the aqua and DMF solvate molecules, linking the molecular entities into a supramolecular three-dimensional network.

This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

Electric utility response to certain amendments of the Clean Air Act has resulted in a production of several types of alkaline coal combustion byproducts. Alkaline combustion byproducts are gaining increased usage for acid mine drainage mitigation and abatement as research leads to a better understanding of their beneficial applications. Since January of 1997, Mettiki Coal Corporation has been injecting alkaline flue gas desulphurization byproducts from Virginia Electric?s Mt. Storm Unit #3 wet limestone scrubber into abandoned portions of the active Mettiki mine. This paper provides an overview of the key design, transportation, regulatory, and environmental issues faced in the project.

"A mineral resource royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In South Africa, this payment is made to the State as holder of the mineral rights (The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008). The principle purpose of this research paper is to identify if the State is benefitting from the mineral resource royalty by considering its impact on seven individual Witwatersrand gold mines.For this study, a simple financial optimiser model was created in Microsoft Excel that links the ore flow, block listing and the cash flow (excluding or including the cost of the mineral resource royalty). Mixed integer linear programing (the Excel Solver function) is utilised to optimise either profit or NPV (at 9% and 12%) by adjusting the cut-off grade.The impact on each of the seven mines mine was different but overall R7.9 billion is estimated to be paid in mineral resource royalty over their expected remaining lives. Due to the cost of the mineral resource royalty and increasing the cut-off grades, the total revenue decreases by R10 billion. A significant portion of this lost revenue would have been paid to the State in the forms of other taxation including company income tax which decreases by R2.8 billion. It is recommended that an industry wide investigation be conducted to determine if the resource royalty is adding to the State’s revenue, or destroying value including premature job losses. IntroductionTaxation of mining companies has become a very topical subject in the context of the postapartheid South African economy. There have been increasing calls for equitable re-distribution of mineral asset wealth for the benefit of all South African citizens and not just to an elite few. As part of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MRDPA) of 2002, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008 was introduced and came into effect in 2010 (South African Revenue Services, 2008). A mineral royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In the case where the holder of the mineral right is the State, then this payment is made to the State (Cawood, 1999). Studies on the potential impact of the mineral resource royalty on the minerals industry have been conducted during the formulation of the Act and subesquently. These include Cawood and Macfarlane (2003), who suggested a cap of no more than 3% (Cawood and Macfarlane, 2003), as well as Cawood (2011), who predicted rising cut-off grades and thus reducing mineral reserves. In 2013, Grobler completed a Masters in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria and concluded that the impact of the mineral resource royalty on the economy is positive. She stated that the royalty has caused operating expenses to increase, but this does not appear to be significant. Furthermore, she stated that the royalty has not affected the way the mining industry operates (Grobler, 2014)."

The functional design of a pavement relates to the selection of appropriate wearing course materials which optimise the trafficability of a pavement. Trafficability is dictated to a large degree by the choice, application and maintenance of locally available wearing course materials. Poor functional performance results in decreased safety and operational efficiency and increasing road and vehicle maintenance requirements. An optimal functional design will include a certain amount and frequency of maintenance (watering, grading etc.) and thus maintenance itself can be planned, scheduled and optimized within the limits of required road performance and minimum vehicle operating and road maintenance costs. Since no wearing course material selection guidelines, tailored to the specific needs of surface mines, were available, there was the need to identify appropriate selection guidelines for the range of materials commonly encountered for road building on South African mines. The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the functional design method for mine haul roads and, through an analysis and quantification of existing wearing course material performance, to recommend appropriate wearing course material selection guidelines. The functional design technique has been applied at a number of mines and is illustrated by an application case study which demonstrates the potential reduction in total transportation operating costs associated with the optimal functional design.

The South African Minerals Development Act (?the Act?) has been promulgated and will come into full force and effect once it is gazetted. Thereafter, all Old Order mineral rights will have to be converted into New Order mineral rights within a 5-year period, probably by the end of 2008. The conversion of rights will be achieved only with the demonstrated inclusion of empowerment groups in the conversion applications. In addition to the Act, the first draft of the proposed Royalty Bill (?the Bill?) was released during the week beginning 17 March 2003. Comments on the Bill?s contents had to be submitted before 30 April 2003. The contents were to be considered in terms of applicability and acceptability to the South African minerals industry, where after proposed comments and suggested amendments were to be submitted to the relevant State Treasury office. Specifically referring to the Bill, the general response from the industry is one of concern. Since any royalty is tantamount to a tax, the general feeling is that the current mining taxation rates are already internationally competitive and to increase these effective rates, notably at differing rates depending on commodity type, will have an adverse impact on the South African mining industry. A number of these impacts can be mitigated to some degree, depending on the flexibility of the State to address the major concerns.

This paper outlines a simple methodology for mineral characterisation, developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) managed research project P777 ?The Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of Clerici?s Solution)?. The project was sponsored by De Beers, Rio Tinto and Iluka Resources. Heavy mineral characterisation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes is frequently conducted using laboratory heavy liquid analysis. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (?heavy?) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. Beyond this value organic liquids can be used, however this presents significant health and safety hazards. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900?s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (e.g. anatase RD 3.9, rutile RD 4.2, ilmenite RD 4.4 ? 4.7 and zircon RD 4.6 ? 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to Clerici?s solution. Clerici?s solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs, infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (e.g. blood testing of exposed staff). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation has been developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstates solutions, that can replace Clerici?s solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (e.g. -250 +150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low toxic separations at relative densities above 4.0 is outlined and the comparison of results with Clerici?s solution presented. In addition, preliminary work on density fractionation of zircon samples is presented. Zircon fractionation relates to their inclusion, radionuclide content and metamictization.

Splashing and wave formation has been studied experimentally by using one-seventh water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) reactor with two different tuyere configurations by using paraffin and water as simulated slag and simulated metal respectively. Experimental results have been discussed in terms of total splash volume, relative slag volume in splash (dispersed-slag phase holdup in splash), wave frequency and wave amplitude with respect to gas injection rate and tuyere configuration at bath heights between 0.25m and 0.38m. Gas flow rates ranged from 0.00599m3/s to 0.01312 m3/s. The results of splash measurements showed that splash volume increased with increasing gas flow rate and decreasing bath heights for both tuyere arrangements. However, off-centre configuration resulted in relatively higher amounts of splash. The slag volume in splash (Dph in splash) was also found to increase with decreasing bath heights and increasing gas injection rates. The high speed photography revealed that the frequency and wave amplitude increased with gas injection rate. The experimental results also showed that the frequency and vertical displacement of the rotating wave increased when the tuyere orientation became off-centered. This might be used to explain why off-center configuration resulted in generating higher splash volumes than the center configuration.

DC arc furnaces are widely used for steel scrap melting as well as for reductive smelting of ore fines. Industrial smelting applications include the smelting of chromite to produce ferrochromium, the smelting of ilmenite to produce titania slag and pig iron, and the recovery of cobalt from nonferrous smelter slags. A number of myths and misconceptions are widely held, especially regarding: the age of the technology, the use of a hollow electrode, arc stability and shape, arc and bath radiation, interaction between the arc and molten slag, electrical behaviour of arcs and slags, a comparison between AC and DC furnaces, DC reactors, the lifespan of bottom electrodes, and the applicability of DC arc furnaces to various metallurgical systems.

A Seismic Hazard Scale (SHS) has been developed to provide a practical seismic hazard assessment tool applicable to mine site personnel. It has been applied to seismic data sets from numerous Western Australian mines. The SHS is applicable when quantifying seismic hazard on a mine wide scale, on a mining block scale, and on a local cluster-by-cluster scale. Spatial mapping of variations in seismic hazard is a particularly powerful application of the scale. The SHS is sensitive to temporal increases in seismic hazard. It has also been shown that the SHS can be applied to estimate seismic hazard when seismic monitoring data are not available. The SHS is a simple derivation of the Gutenberg-Richter relation. There are assumptions and limitations to the SHS that need to be considered when applying it to mine seismicity data.
