"A computer system for the design of open pits to mine stratiform orebodies has been developed for use at Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd. The particular requirements of such a system, for example, the accuracy of representation of geological detail and the ability to follow footwalls, arc described in this paper, together with the methods that have been adopted to satisfy them.A modified version of the Open Pit Design Program of Rio Tinto Zinc Consultants, Ltd. is incorporated in the system and the geological data are converted into a form usable by the computer by means of a pencil follower. Some of the uses which have been made of the system are described, with reference to the long- and medium-term planning of the Nchanga Open Pit, the major producing pit at Chingola Division."

Previous work has shown that sulphide self-heating occurs in three distinct stages referred to as Stage A, Stage B and Stage C. In this paper the focus is on the transition from Stage A to Stage B, which occurs at ca. 100OC. Background literature hints that the transition corresponds to the transformation of the rhombic form of elemental sulphur to the more reactive monoclinic form that occurs at 96OC. A test apparatus is modified for adiabatic heating to track the transition. The results support this transformation of sulphur as being key to the transition, and the transition temperature is thus modified to 96OC. Variations in a sample’s response under adiabatic conditions are observed and possible reasons are discussed. Testing in adiabatic mode provides new insights into the sulphide self-heating process that complement the test designed to identify propensity to self-heat. In many respects a porphyry copper ore concentrator plant can be considered as a simple system. Chalcopyrite typically liberates well at relatively coarse sizes, and even low grade ores are amenable to upgrading 20 to 30 times to produce concentrate grades in excess of 25 % in very simple Rougher- Regrind-Cleaner+Scavenger flotation circuits. The flotation response of chalcopyrite has been well characterised in many fundamental and applied research studies and the conditions necessary to depress pyrite and other floating gangue species are well understood. But what happens to the particle surfaces when you have a 50 km pipeline between the grinding circuit and the flotation plant? How does the seasonal variation in water quality affect your ability to control pulp chemistry? What impact does the relative concentration of the different sulphide species have on their separability? Why do two plants that receive nominally the same ore produce consistently different results? And most importantly, what do you need to do to improve the performance of both plants? To answer these and other questions, a focussed sampling and analysis programme was carried out at the Las Tórtolas flotation plants in 2018 and 2019. The work included full down-the-bank sampling, hot floats, the use of radioactive tracers for determining residence time distribution profiles, gas dispersion measurements, detailed mineralogy by size across the circuits and multiple regrind surveys. This comprehensive study was augmented by analysis of historical mineralogy, geometallurgy and operating data using modern data science techniques, and has provided the foundation for current and future optimisation initiatives. Flotation concentrate originating from the Asarel-Medet porphyry copper mining and processing complex in Bulgaria has been subjected to regrinding using a Ro-Star mill; the effects of which on the downstream metallurgical behaviour are discussed. Particularly the effect on the liberation degree was studied through an optical microscopy and MLA-SEM automated mineralogy. On the other hand, copper selective flotation of the reground bulk concentrate was realised to evaluate the anticipated metallurgical improvement. Process parameters such as involvement of prior hydrocycloning and variation of collector dosage have been evaluated. Within a two-minute residence time inside the Ro-Star mill, an improved liberation degree of the copper bearing minerals has been observed. As a consequence, enhanced copper recovery and selectivity against pyrite was noted. It has been found that in order to guarantee efficient flotation of the resulting ultrafine particles, a modified flotation regime (i.e. changing collector suite and dosages) should be followed. Opencast coal mining is responsible for the greatest area of land disturbance across all of the commodity types in South Africa. Many thousands of hectares have been rehabilitated to date and, although rehabilitation performance is not always measured or reported, a significant database, spanning 24 years, has now been analysed to identify the main shortcomings holding back rehabilitation sustainability across the industry. Data from 48 different collieries with rehabilitation performance scores measured from 2000-2024 were analysed. A standardised assessment framework was implemented at all 48 collieries, focusing on aspects of land capability, soil fertility, landscape form and drainage, vegetation species composition and basal cover, implementation of maintenance programmes, and prevalence of invasive alien plants. The findings show that, although invasive species management, plant species composition, and plant basal cover are often adequate, the implementation of aftercare and maintenance programmes (influencing soil fertility) and deficiencies in overall landform design and drainage systems are most significant in preventing overall rehabilitation progression and self-sustainability. Integrating these during design and rehabilitation execution, followed by intensive maintenance (especially in the first five years post-topsoiling and seeding) will be key for the overall industry performance to improve to acceptable levels. The database is biased towards collieries that actually do undertake rehabilitation and that do measure it, hence the actual industry performance is likely worse than what is presented. Due to the substantial hectarages involved and the main post-mining land uses being grazing and crop production, the industry cannot afford to keep perpetuating deficiencies in achieving the foundational aspects of rehabilitation that would pave the way for sustained economic future use.

Coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs is a major concern in coal mines. In comparison to other hazards, this phenomenon is difficult to detect. Fifteen factors influencing coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs were identified from the literature. The logical relationships between these factors were evaluated and quantified by decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and interpretive structural modelling (ISM) methods. A four-level hierarchical structure model was established. The research shows that combining DEMATEL and ISM can reveal the key factors that influence coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs and establishthe interactions and relationships among these factors. The results can provide the basis for preventing and controlling coal spontaneous combustion in longwall gobs.

The complex refractory Cu-Pb-Zn polymetallic ore in Xinjiang, China is a massive sulphide ore with complex mineral components. In the past two years, the ore mineralogy has changed, resulting in a decline in metallurgy, with too much zinc reporting to the lead and copper concentrates. A detailed mineralogical study indicating the presence of secondary copper minerals, which could be activating the sphalerite early in the present circuit, was used to develop a novel reagent and flotation flowsheet termed “Pb-Cu co-flotation, Cu intensified flotation, Zn flotation”. It was tested and found to significantly contribute to improving the flotation performance of the ore. In the Pb-Cu co-flotation circuit, successful depression of pyrite and sphalerite was achieved using a BK612- Na2S based depressant system. Most of the galena and some of the Cu bearing minerals with excellent floatability were collected with the use of the selective collector BK906. The rest of Cu bearing minerals were floated in a copper Z200 circuit using a BK537-lime-zinc sulphate based depressant scheme. Zinc flotation from the copper tailing was performed in a SIBX circuit using lime as a pyrite depressant. Using the proposed flowsheet, overall Pb, Cu, and Zn recovery increased significantly to 88%, 87%, and 90% respectively. The grinding circuit can be one of the most important mineral processing circuits in plants. Along with the application of large-scale milling machines, the design and optimisation of the operation strategy for grinding circuits is more complicated. An in-house grinding process simulation tool was developed to mass balance, model fit and simulate crushing, grinding and classification circuits. An industrial grinding and classification circuit in a copper mine was modelled, and the modelling parameters were verified by a particular group of plant survey data. To justify the prediction ability of the fitted models, the model predictions under different operation conditions were compared with another group of plant survey data. Then the model predicted the effects on the circuit of changing operating conditions. Circuit analysis of the comminution process for water feed to a SAG mill, water feed to sump, the rolling speed of a SAG mill and the percentage of ball filling in a SAG mill was put into practise, based on the simulation results. The simulation results can be used to help plant operators understand the features of the comminution process and may help to build a knowledge library for process control. The platinum group metals (PGMs), i.e. ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, are typically found in association with each other, but also importantly, with nickel and copper. Typically Platinum and palladium have the greatest economic significance and other PGMs are typically produced as co-products of these. With recent increases in the value of nickel, cobalt, and the PGMs and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of metals, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources and metal-bearing residues has also substantially increased. As an efficient, proven, and environmentally sound technology Outotec Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Technology has gained commercial acceptance in the nickel industry, including PGM recovery. For the processing of nickel- and PGM-bearing feed materials, five Outotec Ausmelt Furnaces at four sites are in operation. Two of these furnaces are located in Rustenburg, South Africa, which is by far the biggest mine-based producer of platinum. Outotec also has hydrometallurgical processes available for further treatment and extraction of PGMs, which are also briefly discussed.

ST Equipment & Technology (STET)’s tribo-electrostatic belt separator technology allows for the beneficiation of fine mineral powders by means of an entirely water-free technology with high throughput and low energy consumption. The STET separator is suited for separation of very fine (<1 μm) to moderately coarse (500 μm) particles, in contrast to other electrostatic processes that are typically limited to particles >75 μm in size. STET has performed exploratory studies with several iron ores including tailings and experimental results to date have demonstrated that low-grade iron fines can be upgraded by means of STET tribo-electrostatic separator to commercial grades (58-65%Fe). Experimental results together with high-level economic evaluations indicate that scavenging processes involving low drying costs, DSO operations and tailings beneficiation offer a commercially viable processing method to recover fine iron that would otherwise be lost by traditional processing. Dry electrostatic processing of iron ore presents a clean, low-energy opportunity for iron producers to reduce costs and wet tailings generation associated with traditional gravimetric, flotation and wet magnetic separation circuits. Moreover, STET technology allows for mining waste utilisation and resource recovery from iron ore fines and tailings, therefore offering processors a novel method to recover fines that would otherwise be difficult to process to sellable grades with existing technologies. "This paper provides a progress update on three tapblock monitoring technologies that Hatch has been developing with our clients for non-ferrous smelting furnaces.The Tapblock Diagnostic System (TDS) is an advanced on-line monitoring system that uses temperature data along with embedded thermal model results to evaluate the condition of a tapblock over its campaign life. Hatch recently installed a second Tapblock Diagnostic System, some details of which are provided in this paper.The Tap-hole Acoustic Monitoring (TAM) system is installed on water-cooled copper tapblocks and uses the noise from the tapping channel to provide a qualitative indication of wear and deterioration of the tapping channel refractory. In addition, TAM can be used to monitor drilling and lancing performance, and potentially could also be used in the future as a guide for automatic drilling and lancing systems (Sadri et al., 2008).The third technology is the use of fibre optic sensors to measure temperature on the hot face and in the tapping channel of a tapblock. Fibre optic technology allows installation of numerous sensors in key locations where they are very sensitive to tapblock condition and also provide more extensive spatial coverage than is possible with traditional instruments. This paper provides an update on our efforts to address issues with premature failure of the sensor cables due to corrosion, and also converting the vast amount of data from the sensor cable into information that can be used by furnace operators."

The effects of utilizing recycled tailings pond water from the flotation plant at the Mining Company of Guemassa (MCG) on galena recovery and selectivity towards chalcopyrite (RPb-Cu) , sphalerite (RPb- Zn), and pyrrhotite (RPb-Fe) were studied at bench scale. The results showed that recycling the tailings pond water in the lead circuit without addition of fresh water gave a good flotation performance in terms of lead recovery (Rpb) (75%) and selectivity towards the other metals: RPb-Cu (54%), RPb-Zn (60%) and RPb-Fe(65%). This allows the water to be recycled at least four times. However, increasing the d80 from 100 μm to 160 μm currently used at the MCG plant had a negative effect on the lead flotation performance.

"The localized uniform conditioning (LUC) technique was proposed by Marat Abzalov in 2006. The technique converts conventional uniform conditioning (UC) grade-tonnage curves into single grade values attached to each smallest mining unit (SMU). This is achieved by ranking the SMUs within a panel in increasing order of their grade (based on the direct kriging of SMUs). This ranking is then used to localize the conventional UC grade-tonnage curves for each panel by dividing them into classes and computing their mean grades, which are assigned to the SMUs. The quality of this localization process will depend heavily on the validity of the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs. Abzalov noted that where the distribution of data available for the direct kriging of the SMU is characterized by strong short-range variability, the advantages of using the LUC approach may be more limited. Consequently, a study was undertaken to determine how valid the predicted grade patterns of a typical Birimian-style gold deposit (with high nugget effect and strong short-range variability) might be expected to be. This was determined by comparing the direct SMU kriging ranking (based on sparse data) with the grade control model ranking (based on close-spaced data and the best available estimate of the deposit). The results showed a satisfactory correlation between these rankings and it was concluded that, although the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs may be less meaningful for deposits exhibiting strong short-range continuity, there is nevertheless a convincing relationship with the actual (or best available) rankings. Therefore, the LUC technique is still considered to be useful for this style of deposit. Generally, filter media used in filter presses have a limited operational life. Besides mechanical damage, there is a growing deposition of fine particles with increasing filtration cycles, the so-called blinding, inside the filter cloth. The resulting decreasing pore diameters not only affect the efficiency of the filtration process itself by increasing the filter medium resistance, but also make it more difficult to regenerate the filter press between the individual cycles, e.g. leading to an insufficient cake discharge. Since tailings filtration requires handling of large process flows containing a significant fraction of particles in the lower micrometer range, an investigation into media rejuvenation is of interest. The aim of the study is to determine if pit lakes are a sustainable coal mine closure option in South African. The water balance, chemistry, limnology, and bacterial population of three selected pit lakes were investigated. The lakes are in the three major coal basins of South Africa and are associated with different lithologies and mining methods. The major factors driving the water balance of the pit lakes are direct rainfall, runoff, inflow from old mine workings, and groundwater infiltration, with the major losses being evaporation or discharge onto surface. The study indicated that pit lakes can be designed as ’terminal sinks’ to provide a sustainable mine closure option. The pit lakes sampled have an alkaline pH, and mostly a sodium/calcium sulphate water with total dissolved solids content of less than 3000 mg/l. The phytoplankton and microbiological data indicates that the pit lakes support aquatic life. The study shows that correctly designed pit lakes can be an environmentally sustainable closure option for South Africa’s coal mines. A suggested design manual has been developed to assist mine owners and regulators in developing sustainable coal mine pit lakes as a closure option.

Surface tension of mold flux is a key factor affecting optimum casting conditions. A thermodynamic model was developed to determine the surface tension of mold flux containing fluoride based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory of slag structure and Butler’s equation. The relationship between composition and surface tension was investigated by this model. Results indicated that the calculated values showed good agreement with literature data, and the average error was 8.19%. The surface tension value of the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux was larger than that of the CaO– SiO2-based mold flux. The surface tension in a multi-component system decreased with increasing contents of SiO2, CaF2, and Na2O, which are considered surface-active components. This trend was more significant in the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux.

The dispersion of mature fine oil sands tailings (MFT) by the addition of sodium lignosulfonate was studied using contact angle measurements, optical scattering, and particle size measurements. Lignosulfonate caused the release of residual bitumen to the slurry surface and settlement of fines. Dynamic contact angle by captive bubble measurements were carried out on bitumen to determine the effect of the dispersant on the wettability of bitumen. Lignosulfonate caused a change in the aggregation state of the MFT and increased sedimentation of particles, as indicated by optical scattering measurements. Zeta potential measurements indicate that this change was caused by an increase in adsorption of lignosulfonate onto particles, which caused improved settling of the colloid. Ultraviolet Visible (UV) spectrophotometry and organic carbon content measurements showed that only a small amount of the reagent remains in the aqueous phase of the tailings, which is critical for decontamination of recycled water. The gravity method is often applied in mining-related scenarios such as geological and mineral exploration, detecting subsurface cavities and voids (“receptacles”) that may become sinkholes, siting of surface structures, fault-mapping, and more. It is also widely applied in geotechnical engineering to map subsurface karst profiles and to detect subsurface cavities, such as can occur in open pit mines. While it is widely acknowledged that, compared with other available geophysical methods, this method is the most applicable to the karst profiling problem, survey geometries applied in the field are often far from optimal. The gravity surveying specifications prescribed in SANS 1936 omit some key requirements for optimal survey outcomes, and this paper is intended to fill those gaps. The authors have seen scopes of work that require only a few measurements over the footprint of a proposed structure, indicating a lack of understanding of the nature of the gravitational field. A single gravity measurement is subject to the camouflaging effects of several influences, many of which can be larger than the anomaly caused by the subsurface density variation itself. Papers in the body of literature show an awareness of the need to map the regional field so that it can be subtracted to unmask the residual gravity anomaly, but rarely do they examine how instrument sensitivity governs the size of detectable anomalies or discuss how a detailed terrain correction can be instrumental for isolating faint targets. This paper aims to explain how to apply the gravity method correctly to mining and geotechnical problems, specifically in the detection of subsurface cavities. It discusses various factors to assist with optimising the acquisition of gravity data and its processing so as to maximise the practical value of gravity surveys.

The global liquified natural gas (LNG) storage market size is projected to reach USD17.5 billion by 2025. Currently, owed to its high toughness, tensile strength, and excellent weldability, the 9% nickel steel is the most used in building infrastructure for cryogenic applications such as the construction of tanks and pipes for storage and transportation of LNG. However, this alloy is not readily available because of its complex production process and high cost. This provides an opportunity for suitable alternative materials to build infrastructure for cryogenic applications. Among strong contenders is the Fe-Mn based alloys, which have sparked global interest due to their desirable properties such as relatively lower density, low cost, high toughness and strength, due to a high manganese (Mn) content. These attractive properties render Fe-Mn based alloys preferred candidates to replace traditional steels in engineering applications in which strengthweight ratio is critical. In response, as a build-up to designing and developing austenitic Fe- Mn alloys, the present study employed density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles computational materials modelling technique to investigate the structural, thermodynamic, and magnetic properties of binary Fe-Mn alloy composition in competing FCC, HCP, and BCC crystal structures. Using this approach, it was possible to unravel the key underlying elastic properties that are directly correlated to experimental tensile strength and high toughness in binary Fe-Mn alloys. Besides successfully validating the existing experimental data, the current predicted properties and the deployed approach will serve as a benchmark from which further alloying required to improve other properties will be conducted.
