The Broughton and Ring magnetite deposits in Essex County, N. Y., are thought to be in a mineralized belt that extends from the Lake Sanford mining district to Lake Champlain and passes through the Mineville district. The country rook is syenite-gneiss, similar to that in the Mineville area. The Bureau of Mines conducted a vertical magnetometer survey of the area. On the Broughton properties there are no indications, magnetically, of magnetite in any degree of concentration. 'On the ding properties a number of sharp, localized magnetic anomalies were observed. One core-drill hole was bored to a, depth of 48.3 feet, also, to test one of the strongest anomalies. The field work was in progress from December 1943 to July 1944. Although no iron ore was intersected by' the drill hole, it showed that the amphibolite rook, at a depth of 6 to 100 feet below the surface, contained enough magnetite and iron sulfides to account for the anomalies recorded by the magnetometer survey.

A fundamental safety research area for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach is to develop and evaluate new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion protection for mining personnel. The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) cooperated with HeiTech Corp. of Virginia, Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Queensland, Australia, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in three separate research programs to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage resistance of numerous innovative seal designs and ventilation control structures for use in underground coal mines. For each phase of the program, various full-scale seals, stoppings, and an overcast design were constructed in PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. The seals and stoppings were built in crosscuts and were subjected to explosions to evaluate their strengths. Four pumpable cementitious seal designs ranging in thickness from 610 to 915 mm (24 to 36 in) were evaluated in the first cost-reimbursable research program with HeiTech Corp. A simple wooden framework with brattice liner was used as a form to contain the cementitious slurry during the curing period. As the seal designs decreased in thickness, higher compressive strength cementitious grout was used. All four seals withstood an explosion pressure pulse of at least 138 kPa (20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage resistance. In the second cost-reimbursable research program with Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Australia, several innovative seal and stopping designs and an overcast design were evaluated. Each of the seal designs and the overcast side and wing walls used one or more air-inflated vinyl bladder assemblies anchored to the mine roof and hitched into the ribs and floor. The air within these bladders was displaced with a high-strength cementitious grout. The overcast deck consisted of a 200-mm ('7.8-in) thick reinforced cementitious slab. This was the first time that an overcast structure had been explosion tested under full-scale conditions. All of the seals, stoppings, and overcast design passed the air leakage tests before being subjected to a series of explosions with static pressure pulses ranging from 14 to 475 kPa (2 tab 69 psi). Instrumentation measured seal and overcast wall displacement as a function of time. The 450-mm (1 7.7-in) thick seal in the 2.8-m(9-ft) high third crosscut withstood an explosion pressure of 170 kPa (25 psi), but failed during a later test, which generated a peak static pressure of 475 kPa (69 psi) at the seal location. A similar 450-mm-thick seal in the 2.1-m (7-ft) high second crosscut withstood three explosion tests, which generated peak static pressures of 195, 205, and 370 kPa (28, 30, and 54 psi) at the seal location. Next, the overcast design withstood four explosions, which generated static overpressures ranging from 16 to 47 kPa (2.3 to 6.8 psi). A third program at the request of MSHA evaluated the effectiveness of using pressurized grout bags (Packsetter bags) along the mine roof and ribs in lieu of floor and rib hitching for a standard-type solid- concrete-block seal. This program was initiated to address an urlusual geological mining condition encountered when building seals in entries where required rib hitching is not a viable option due to soft friable coal. Results showed that the use of these quick-setting grout-filled Packsetter bags pressurized internally to 300 kPa (44 psi) not only provides a seal that can withstand a 138-kPa static pressure explosion, but also provides a sealing option where rib hitching is not possible.

Explicit expressions are presented for the input admittance and effective height of several buried metal antennas, namely: (i) prolate spheroidal; (ii) spherical; (iii) oblate spheroidal; (iv) parallel plate; (v) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in the same plane of the plates; (vi) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in a plane normal to that of the plates (H-shaped antenna). It is concluded that in all practical situations of "small" antennas approximation 1 is almost always appropriate. Computations were carried out for bare antennas, the extension to insulated ones being, however, straightforward. Although a rigorous theory of the antenna performance in a realistic semi-infinite conductive medium has not been developed, the results quoted should also be applicable when antennas are a few skin depths below the earth's surface. In particular, for the evaluation of radio-links under up-over -and-down operating conditions, the antennas can be replaced by dipoles of length equal to the effective height. Since the antenna's parameters are given in analytical form, it is also possible, by using Laplace transform techniques, to compute the transient response of the antenna. The transient is described by pole (short-time behavior) and branch-cut contributions (large time behavior). For these last terms, an asymptotic evaluation is possible, so obtaining closed form expressions for the response at large observation times, which is closely related to the dispersion characteristic of the environment.

An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry . In connection with these activities , the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases , liquids , and solids , and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence . The limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures of combustible gases , vapors , and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured , transported , and used with greater safety , provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known. Acetic anhydride , ( CH3CO) 20 , with which this report is concerned , is a liquid at ordinary temperatures . It is used in the preparation of a number of organic chemicals and in the manufacture of photographic film and of artificial silk . It is perhaps the most important acetylating agent for industrial uses - a property that is especially important at this time because of its direct application in the manufacture of munitions . The sample tested was supplied by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corporation . Its specific gravity was given as 1.083 at 20/20 . The vapor pressures , supplied by the manufacturer , are plotted in figure 1 .

"The Baboquivari mining district is about 60 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., the present railroad shipping point. The values are silver and gold. The silver is largely associated with the black oxides of manganese. The ore is highly oxidized, and careful panning shows only a very small amount of pyrite. Our sample analyzed as follows:A flotation mill has been installed in the district, but it does not concentrate the precious metals satisfactorily. Our best laboratory flotation results were obtained by grinding to pass 65-mesh and floating with Xanthate or standard flotation oils plus sodium sulphide and polysulphide. This sulphidizing method gave a concentration of 32 per cent of the silver and 80 per cent of the gold, which about equals plant practice.We do not know of an instance where the oxidized forms of manganese have been concentrated satisfactorily by flotation.Plain cyanide on the original ore extracts practically all of the gold but only one-third of the silver. A preliminary deoxidizing roast, using producer gas or powdered coal, gives a calcine from which cyanide dissolves about 90 per cent of the gold and 75 per cent of the silver. This method of treatment, known as the Clevenger-Caron process, is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 226.Preliminary treatment with sulphur dioxide by burning pyrite or sulphur and passing this gas into the pulp until all of the contained manganese is dissolved or changed in form best prepares the ore for cyanidation. The acid consumption will vary with the percentage of manganese and other soluble constituents. Neither gold or silver is dissolved by this acid treatment. The washed residue gives maximum cyanide dissolution of the gold and silver with minimum loss of cyanide,"

The expertise, effort and contribution of these individuals has proven to be invaluable in the attack on respirable disease. Nationally and internationally recognized researchers in the areas of particle characterization, interaction of dust and lungs, dilution and dispersion, rock mechanics and continuing education lend their laboratory facilities, equipment and human resources to benefit the mining industry. The temperature entropy (T, S) chart? of thermodynamic properties of nitrogen herewith presented is a complete (1949) revision and a considerable extension of similar charts prepared by the author for use of the helium section of the Bureau of Mines about 25 years previously on the basis of inadequate data then obtaining. During the interval since that early effort, much experimentally determined information on nitrogen properties and behavior has been published, which now permits a more nearly accurate layout and more extensive charting of these relations.

The tests described herein were made in the course of a series of experiments on coal-mine ventilation factors which the Bureau of Mines has beep; conducting for the past two years at its experimental mine near Bruceton, Pa. The object of the present tests was to determine the leakage of two air locks which had been placed in the experimental mine as hart of the equipment for tests on friction factors. Position of the Doors. The first or inner lock gas across the aircourse between No. 1 and No. 2 left butt entries, and forced the air through these butts. An air-measuring suction in No. 1 butt determined tae volume passing at tent point.

Intensive work on the deoxidation of steel with manganese-silicon alloys by the U. S. Bureau of Mines has shown that the use of those alloys, which may be produced from our domestic manganese ores, would decrease the ferromanganese requirements of a very large tone of our steel by from 60 to 30 per cent and in some cases by 100 per cent. The open-hearth heats made with these alloys have been of excellent quality. The tonnage of our ferro-grade ores which has been made available by the bureau's ore-dressing studies, combined with the ,products resulting from such processes as those developed by the bureau and by Bradley for Cuyuna ores, should easily fill our reduced ferromanganese requirements Then manganese-silicon alloys and ordinary spiegel are used in the way described in this report. There are no technical difficulties in the application of this practice, and any difficulties involved in its wide and immediate application would only be those arising from habituated ideas of the necessity of ferromangenese. General acceptance of this practice and development of the available sources of domestic ferro-grade material by already proven processes should make this country independent of foreign ores.

"INTRODUCTION The most productive area of the eastern Virginia pyrite belt lies to the north of the village of Mineral., in Louisa County. The largest producers of pyrite ore in the area were the Armenius, Boyd Smith, and the Sulphur mines.The Boyd Smith mine started production about 1890 and operated more or less continuously until 1922, when competition from the Gulf States and Spain closed the pyrite mines in Virginia. There are no reliable records of production or value of minerals produced.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the most effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they take the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A deposit 10 mi (16 km) southwest of the area contains copper and silver minerals in the Triassic Wild Sheep Creek Formation which probably underlies basalt lava flows covering the study area. Abundant basalt in the area can be crushed and used as aggregate, but suitable deposits closer to markets are widely available No sand, gravel, coal, oil, gas, or geothermal resource, were Identified. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Sheep Divide RARE II area [10 mi (16 km) west of the Snake River] encompasses 7,100 acres (2,800 ha) of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Enterprise, Oregon, is located 23 air mi (37 (m) west of the area. Peripheral access is provided by the highway from Joseph to the community of Imnaha, Oregon, then south to the study area by the graveled Upper Imnaha Road (fig. 1).

An accurate characterization of the vibration environment and a vibration qualification test derived from it will be a very useful tool for manufacturers of instrumentation for use on underground coal mining equipment. Recognizing this, the Bureau of Mines sponsored a study wherein vibration levels were measured on mining equipment to form a basis for developing the required vibration test. The data base was composed of 160 samples taken at different positions on a variety of underground machinery. The data were analyzed and presented in a format typical of military vibration qualification tests. The form was shown to be virtually identical to the swept sine test envelope specified in MIL-STD-810B for tracked vehicles.

Amyl nitrite (C5H11NO2) is a pale-yellow liquid with an ethereal fruity odor and a pungent aromatic taste. Its use in first-aid treatment of cyanide poisoning has been suggested by Chen and his coworkers. Although not the most effective treatment, it is the only one that does not require intravenous injections and is, therefore, very suitable as a preliminary measure, which only involves breaking a capsule near the patient's nose until intravenous injections can be given. In the case of the sodium nitrite -sodium thiosulfate treatment, for instance, such injections require about 15 minutes. As amyl nitrite "Pearls" (small capsules containing liquid amyl nitrite) are placed in many first-aid kits by various companies that handle, store, or use hydrogen cyanide gas, it appeared advisable to investigate the explosion hazards of this material in air and oxygen. Accordingly, tests were made to determine the limits of flammability, temperature range of flammability of amyl nitrite saturated with air and with oxygen, and minimum ignition temperatures of this material in air and in oxygen.

1. BACKGROUND Many research projects on engineering controls for noise reduction in mining were conducted by the former U.S. Bureau of Mines, mostly under contracts from 1972 through 1986.1 Contracts were awarded to determine which mining equipment was responsible for worker noise exposure over the permitted Federal Regulation level of 90 dBA for 8 hours. Dominate noise sources, for each piece of equipment was also determined. The final goal was to develop engineering noise controls for those pieces of equipment and then evaluate them. This was the general approach taken in each research project or contract. This paper deals with what is known about the control of noise from continuous miners, one of the most commonly used underground mining machines. A literature review on continuous miners revealed that the relevant noise sources were divided into four categories: conveyor, cutting head, drive train, and motor noise. The dominate noise sources reported were the conveyor noise and the cutting noise.2 Conveyor noise consists of impacts and scraping at various locations on the conveyor structure. These impacts are associated with discontinuities on the top and bottom decks, impacts between the chain and the tail roller, impacts on the sidewalls at path points of discontinuity under horizontal pivot, and impacts on the flex plate.3 Scraping occurs along the entire length of the chain conveyor. The other dominate source, the cutting of coal, has also been addressed in past research.4, 5, 6 The research presented in this paper only addresses the controls associated with the conveyor. The literature suggests several effective treatments for noise control: retrofitting the chain conveyor with a urethane coating or a urethane sleeve on the chain flights, using a urethane coating or urethane sleeve on the tail roller, constrained layer damping of the decks, and the use of a modified take up plate.7, 8 However, the in-mine durability of these concepts has yet to be proven for the conveyor system. This paper analyzes extensive noise and urethane durability testing on a Joy 14CM9 continuous miner’s conveyor assembly, tail roller, and bottom plate conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Lab facilities. It will also discuss the initial underground testing results for the urethane-coated conveyor flights and tail roller.

A novel method of extinguishing a mine fire in a stowed or gob-filled area by employing liquid carbon dioxide under high pressure eras used recently with success at the President (Prasident) coal mine, Bochum, Germany, as reported by P. Cabolet in Gluckauf (Apr. 24, 1937, p. 393) The use of carbon dioxide gas as a fire-fighting agent in surface plants and in ships is now general practice in the United. States, but when it has been tried for extinguishing fires in mines in large areas more or less confined by stoppings it has not been successful. Examples of the latter method of attempting to fight mine fires are given in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 229, Fifty-Nine Coal-Mine Fires; How They Were Fought and That They Teach, by G. S. Rice, J. VT. Paul, and 14. VT. von Bernewitz (1927). The reason for its nonsuccess may be either that the stoppings are not tight or that the roof and pillars are more or less fissured and enough air passes into the area to sustain a slow fire, whether of spontaneous origin or produced by gas explosion or other source of ignition.

This Information Circular from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) documents and supplements the information presented in a series of workshops held during 2002 and 2003. The primary intended audience consists of all who are involved in developing and conducting miners' training. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers and independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property during the year 2000. Unfortunately, these workers have a relatively high risk of suffering serious work-related injuries and illnesses. The mining industry has the highest rate of occupational fatalities among all U.S. industries. The fatality rate is 30 deaths per 100,000 workers compared to 4.6 for all private industry (Morbidity and Mortality Week Report, 2001; NIOSH, 2002). Compared to workers in other industries, miners also have a relatively high rate of nonfatal lost-time injuries, and their injuries tend to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1999). Many miners are also exposed to significant health hazards, including coal and silica dust, diesel exhaust, and noise. More than 1000 U.S. miners die of lung disease each year (NIOSH, 1999). Mine safety and health professionals have long recognized training as a critical element of an effective safety and health program. Federal regulations (30 CFR, Parts 46 and 48) require mine operators to provide initial safety and health training to all new miners, as well as a minimum of 8 hours of refresher training each year. The time and money being spent to train U.S. miners is substantial, and so there is a strong and steady demand for new and better mine training materials and methods. A growing concern among mine safety professionals regards the training of new workers. A major change in the mining workforce is anticipated within the next decade. In major segments of mining, especially coal, relatively few workers have been hired since the 1970's. Thus, as an entire cohort of miners in the current workforce nears retirement, the replacement of these employees will require an influx of new workers. New miners may be young people who lack the ability to recognize and respond to mining hazards in an appropriate manner. They may also have had different educational experiences than their older counterparts. Many safety professionals believe that these two cohorts require different approaches to training. The papers in this report should help prepare mine trainers for the changes about to occur in the workforce and acquaint them with strategies they can use to enhance the effectiveness of their training. The first three papers present basic principles for teaching adults. The five remaining papers are intended to illustrate how these principles can be applied to the development and imple¬mentation of effective training for miners. Below is an overview of these papers. 1. Kowalski and Vaught review the process and principles of adult learning. The learning model they present includes a discussion of goals, content, delivery, assessment, and remediation. Adults are viewed as active learners, experienced-based, expert in their own right in specific areas, independent, real-life centered, task-centered, problem-centered, solution-driven, skill-seeking, self-directing, and internally and externally motivated. Basic aspects of curriculum development are briefly reviewed. For further information about adult learning, see Camm and Cullen's paper. 2. Mallett and Reinke's first paper discusses issues related to training new miners who have recently or will soon be entering the mining workforce. These new generations of miners have different learning style preferences and training needs than Baby Boomers and other older miners. Even trainers who have been highly effective in the past should reassess their training styles and their classroom materials to determine if they are prepared to meet the needs of these young new workers. This paper provides information that will help mine trainers communicate across the generation gap. 3. Mallett and Reinke's second paper provide an overview of training evaluation. Trainers and decision-makers are given a framework for planning and assessing training evaluation strategies. The authors present Kirkpatrick's (2001) model of evaluation categories and discuss how to start an evaluation plan and various ways to collect data. They do not provide detailed instruction in evaluation methodologies, but give trainers a review of the things they need to consider when developing an evaluation plan. A good evaluation plan can inform revisions to a training course, assess trainee learning, and/or answer managers' questions about program effectiveness. 4. Brnich, Derick, Mallett, and Vaught discuss a technique for incorporating worker participation into fire prevention and safe equipment operation training. This technique involves development of short (5 to 7 minutes) videotapes coupled with toolbox talks that ground the content of the videos within the context of a miner's workplace. An example of one of these training modules is presented, along with the results of an evaluation performed on its effectiveness at improving miners' understanding of what types of information they should be sure to communicate during a mine emergency. 5. Wiehagen, Conrad, Friend, and Rethi discuss on-the-job training (OJT) as a method for teaching miners safety and production skills. Much of the training is done by experienced workers. This paper describes how small investments can help improve the effectiveness of on-the-job training. Effective on-the-job training involves some structure and planning in the transfer of responsibility for task performance from the trainer to the novice. Assisting the trainer could involve helping develop up-to-date job analyses and offering strategies for teaching and evaluating job skills. In its program of investigation of deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines did some development drilling at the Tapley deposit in an endeavor to find an additional source of copper. There are accounts that many years ago the property had some production; there are several old, inaccessible shafts apparently sunk on a vein in rhyolite or diabase. The waste dumps of these shafts contain considerable sulfides, chiefly pyrite and chalcopyrite. To cut the vein below the old mine workings, the Bureau of Mines? diamond-drilled five holes aggregating 1,204 feet. No significant copper mineralization was found.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype nonincendive explosive rock-breaker charge that can be fired unconfined in underground bituminous coal mines without the danger of igniting a flammable atmosphere that might be present. At present, unconfined shooting in underground coal mines is prohibited, but there are situations where the use of such shots would yield an overall improvement in safety. The charge consists of 1-1/2 lb of permissible water gel explosive in the form of a short cylinder 7 inches in diameter and 7/8 inches high, surrounded by a 1 1/2-inch-thick layer of damp salt, and encased in latex rubber reinforced with cheese cloth. The latex rubber housing provides a charge package that is strong enough to resist rough handling yet is pliable enough to conform to an irregular stone surface. A charge of this shape was found to be more effective at breaking rock than charges with lined or unlined cavities. Incendivity tests in a gallery have shown that the prototype charge will not ignite a flammable methane-air atmosphere when fired. Rock- breaking tests made with limestone boulders indicate that the charge will satisfactorily break stone slabs weighing 1 to 2 tons, and that two or more charges might be effective for slabs weighing up to 10 tons. In cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), a test protocol for the certification of these charges as "permissible" for use in flammable atmospheres is being developed.

SMCRA contains five principal regulatory provisions that form the basis for its implementation: Performance Standards Performance standard safe intended to ensure that all surface mining is conducted in a way that protects the environment and the public and ensures that the mined land is restored to productive use following mining. Permits Before developing a surface or underground coal mine, an operator must have a permit issued under SMCRA. An application for a permit to conduct a surface coal mining operation is a detailed document that consists of text and numeric data describing the proposed mining and reclamation. Information must be furnished on pre-mining environmental conditions, existing land use, proposed mining and reclamation, how the performance standards will be met, and the post-mining land use. This provides the regulatory authority with the information necessary to determine that the operation can be conducted in accordance with the regulations. Performance Bonds Before a permit can be granted, an operator must post a performance bond sufficient to cover the cost of reclaiming the site in the event the operator fails to complete reclamation. The bond is not fully released until all performance standards have been met and reclamation of the site has been determined to be successful after five years in the East and Midwest, and after 10 years in the arid West. However, the bond can be partially released as various phases of reclamation are completed. Inspection and Enforcement If a violation of SMCRA or of a state surface mining and reclamation law is observed, an inspector issues a notice of violation to the operator. The violation must be corrected within a specific time, and the operator may also have to pay a fine based on the severity of the violation. If the violation is not corrected, acessation order is issued to immediately stop active coal mining, and the operator must pay a fine. An operator must correct all violations in order to obtain permits for new mines. Lands Unsuitable For Mining Congress recognized that certain coal deposits cannot be mined without permanent damage to unique cultural or natural resources. As a result, SMCRA protects these resources in two ways: It prohibits mining within the boundaries of national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, trails, wild and scenic rivers, wilderness and recreation areas; in areas which will adversely affect sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and within a restricted distance of occupied dwellings, public roads, buildings, parks, schools, churches, and cemeteries; and Provides a process that allows anyone whose interests may be adversely affected by proposed mining to petition to have specific lands designated unsuitable for mining.

Magnetite mines in the Sterling tract, Orange County, N. Y., were operated almost continuously from pre-Revolutionary days until 1923. The Red-Back mine, one of several in this tract, was discovered in 1780; operated briefly in 1880; and abandoned, presumably because the iron ore contained considerable sulfur. The mine is in rough, mountainous country, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 1,100 feet. The magnetite deposit occurs in complex metamorphosed pre-Cambrian formation and is thought to be a replacement of limestone by magnetite. A dip-needle survey, completed in 1916, traced magnetic anomalies for a mile along the outcrop. A preliminary examination of the Red-Back mine was made by W. T. Millar, Bureau of Mines engineer, in December 1942. The Bureau of Mines bored seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,727.6 feet during the winter of 1943-44. A zone of magnetite mineralization was intersected in each of the holes.
