As no cure is known for silicocis after it has developed, prevention is the only effective remedy. There are two main lines of approach to the problem of dust-disease prevention in industry - the engineering, through control of dust production, and the medical, through selection of workers by examination; success probably depends upon a combination of the two. Hatch (146) considers the following measures essential to a complete, well-balanced program of control of the dust hazard in industry: 1. Selection of workers by means of physical examinations in order especially to eliminate those with tuberculosis and other disorders of the respiratory system. 2. Reduction of the duct concentration below the standard of permissible dustiness through adequate moans of dust control and good housekeeping. 3. Limiting the frequency and duration of employment in the dusty occupations, thus reducing the rate of deposition of dust in the lungs. 4. Routine measurement of the effectiveness of the dust-control program by means of periodic medical examinations and duct surveys.

Fifteen shots of three explosives with charge weights of 0.52, 1.1, 3.1, and 5.1 kilograms were fired in a pond to study the seismic effects of detonating explosives in water. Shock pressures and bubble periods were measured with pressure transducers in the water. Vibrations were measured on land in three orthogonal directions with particle velocity gages. Statistical tests indicated that a charge weight exponent of 0.43 best scaled the data. While shock pressures and bubble periods showed considerable differences in explosive performances, the amplitudes of ground vibrations showed less difference, and one prediction equation was therefore derived to estimate vibration amplitudes from all the explosives.

To determine the potentialities of nickel as a substitute for cobalt in catalysts for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, RESULTS The maximum oil yields obtained in bench-scale equipment were as follows: Using 100N1:20Mn:100 kaolin:200 diatomaceous earth catalyst, a maximum yield of 133.8 cm.3/m.3 of pure CO+2H2 was obtained from one pass of the feed gas, With a nickel:cobalt mixed catalyst (Ni:Co - 3:7) having the composition 100(Ni+Co):8MgO: 5Th02:200 diatomaceous earth, a maximum of 172.2 cm.3/m.3 of pure C0+2H2 was obtained.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, four underground respirable dust surveys were conducted to determine factors affecting belt entry dust levels and how using belt air to ventilate work areas affected dust exposures. Belt entry dust levels on the surveyed longwall and continuous miner sections averaged 0.59 and 0.26 mg/m3, respectively. The stageloader-crusher contributed an additional 0.5 to 0.9 mg/m3 of dust to belt air, while the feeder-breaker contributed 0 to 0.2 mg/m3 of dust. A 1,000-ft increase in belt entry length or a 200-to 500-st-per-shift increase in production resulted in roughly a 0.1-mg/m3 increase in dust. Using the belt entry as an intake entry on the continuous miner section appeared to reduce dust levels by 0.1 to 0.3 mg/m3 during cutting. Belt air was not used to ventilate the face on the longwall section.

Although during the past 10 years Alabama has attained an enviable position by its coal-mine accident experience and, like most of the other coal-mining States, has made progress in the safer operation of coal mines, there is still room for improvement, which can be realized only by still greater efforts on the part of employees and employers. From 1993, when accidents were first recorded by the Alabama State Mine Inspection Department, to 1934, inclusive, 3,451 men lost their lives in the production of 569,722,676 tons of coal. The primary purpose of this report is to bring to the attention of the mining industry in Alabama end elsewhere statistics of fatal accidents for 1931-34, with the hope that a study of the causes may lead to reduction of similar accidents in the future.

Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China's overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.

Despite extensive research efforts conducted in the past decades, occupational health risks associated with exposure to nano and ultrafine aerosols emitted by diesel power equipment are still not completely understood. The complexity of physical and chemical properties of diesel aerosols, constantly changing with the implementation of advanced diesel emissions control technologies, make this task rather challenging. The objective of this paper is to identify and characterize nanometer and ultrafine aerosols emitted by diesel engines in the underground environment and evaluate the effects of selected contemporary control technologies on physical properties, chemical composition, and in-vitro toxicology of diesel aerosols. The physical and chemical properties of the nanometer and ultrafine diesel aerosols are to be characterized through a test series in the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory experimental mine. The crucial part of the study has been development of a facility that allows researchers to generate field results with precision and accuracy characteristics of a laboratory environment. The knowledge obtained from this study should strengthen our understanding of the health implications related to exposure to diesel particulate matter and aid in assessing the potential of various control technologies for reducing this exposure.

Aruba, formerly a. part of the Netherlands Antilles, separated on January I, 1986, and became an autonomous part of the Netherlands. Full independence of the island from the Netherlands is scheduled for 1996. In this chapter, however, Aruba's statistics are included with those of the Netherlands Antilles. Tourism continued to be the main industry of the island, which continued to depend heavily on imports, mostly from the United States. During the year, the Government was preparing legislation to regulate the exploration of oil deposits in the relatively shallow sea around Aruba.

Occupational exposure to whole body vibration has long been associated with increased incidence of low back pain and low back injuries1. A number of studies have investigated transmissibility of seat pan vibration 5, 6. While transmissibility has been well researched, the mechanism by which vibration may induce injury has not been thoroughly studied. Winter et al. identified increased reflex response delay after vibration exposure and speculated that muscular fatigue may be the cause of this increase9. However, a mechanism has yet to be demonstrated completely. A potential mechanism that may explain the increased risk is neuromotor habituation. Muscle spindle organs have been shown in the extremities to be sensitive to muscle and tendon vibration. Rapid length changes in muscle have been shown to result in kinesthetic illusions as the regular firing of the muscle spindles is interpreted as muscle lengthening4, 7. These illusions have also been demonstrated in the paraspinal musculature2. With removal of vibration, research in the extremities has demonstrated increased positioning errors, probably due to neuromotor habituation8. In this research, it has been hypothesized that neuromotor habituation after exposure to occupational vibration will increase positioning errors. It is further hypothesized that these errors can be shown to be linked to increased reflex response time. Such increased reflex response time could, in turn, decrease spinal stability and increase low back injury risk. Methods Both positioning error and sudden load response were measured before and after exposure to 20 minutes of 5 Hz, 0.223 m/s2 RMS seat pan vibration. Subjects were asked to sit on an unpadded seat without a backrest. Throughout the whole body vibration period, subjects were instructed to put their hands on a stable hand rest and feet on an adjustable stable footrest. The subjects were instructed to assume a comfortable and relax sitting posture for the duration of the exposure. Positioning error was measured using an active-active reposition sense protocol. Electromagnetic markers (Motionstar, Ascension Tech, Burlington, VT) were used to track trunk motion. With markers attached to the skin at the T10 vertebra, the S1 vertebra and manubrium, trunk flexion (the angle from vertical of the line connecting T10 and S1) and lumbar curvature (the difference in inclination of the T10 and S1 markers) were tracked. In the reposition sense protocol, subjects were asked to maintain an upright trunk flexion and to rotate their pelvis and lumbar curvature to assume a target lumbar curvature. In the protocol subjects completed training trials, where they were asked to match their lumbar curvature using a visual display, and assessment trials, where they were asked to reproduce the lumbar curvature from memory. After two initial training trials, training trials and assessment trials were alternated for a total of 3 assessment trials. Reposition error was defined as the absolute difference between the target lumbar curvature and the lumbar curvature the subject assumed during the assessment trials.

Rock preconditioning in advance of mining was shown to be an effective means of rock-burst control based on the results of a field demonstration carried out on the 7700 level of the Hecla Mining Company's Star mine. Mining through the preconditioned zone was characterized by greatly reduced rates of released seismic energy and no bumping or rock bursting occurred within the preconditioned zone. Mining above the preconditioned zone was characterized by greatly increased rates of released seismic energy and rock bursting, particularly where the vein became very narrow in waste zones. This increased incidence of rock bursting points out the need for stope preconditioning to be carried out on an entire stope block basis. The data obtained from the monitoring of the mining above the preconditioned zone on the 7700 level will be extremely useful in evaluating any future stope block preconditioning experiments on the lower levels or the Star mine.

The West Red River oil field, in Tillman County, Okla. (fig. 1), is approximately 8 miles northwest of the town of Burkburnett, Wichita County, Tex. The wells are in the river bed between the medial line and the south bank of the Red Diver. In the following discussion of the geology, development, and exploita-tion of the field, the authors have, by means of structure maps, crews sections through various parts of the reservoir and tabulated development data and production statistics, recorded salient information on a field whose development was unique and in some respects unusual for fields discovered and initially developed more than a quarter of a century ago. The total oil production from Government-operated leases; considered in the report was 6,900,440 barrels to January 1, 1947, from 3 proved acres developed by H1 oil-producing wells, 10 gas-injection wells, and 5 nonproductive wells. A calculated past recovery of 60P, barrels of oil per acre-foot and an estimated ultimate recovery of 6.S0 barrels of oil per acre-foot under present gas-injection methods begun in 1929 in shown.

Twelve healthy, experienced underground cool miners performed lifting capacity tests in stooped and kneeling postures using a modified psychophysical procedure. Subjects adjusted weight in a lifting box to the maximum they could handle without undue fatigue in an asymmetric lifting task. Lifting periods were 20 min in duration and the frequency was 10 lifts/min. Tests were performed under a 48-in. roof that restricted the subject&apos;s posture. Psychophysical. physiological, and biomechanical dependent measures included the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), heart rate (HR), rate of oxygen consumption (VO2), ventilation volume rate (VF), respiratory exchange ratio (R), and integrated electromyography (EMG) of eight trunk muscles. Results indicated that the MAWL was significantly lower when kneeling than when stooped (p < 0.05), Furthermore, metabolic demands were greater in terms of HR (p < 0.005) mid VO2 (p < 0.05) when kneeling. Left and tight erectores spinae muscles exhibited increased EMG activity- in the kneeling posture (p < 0.001). It was concluded that psychophysical lifting capacity is decreased, while the metabolic stress and internal load on the spine are increased, in the kneeling posture. Results of this Bureau of Mines study indicate that it may be advisable to reduce the weight of materials that are handled repetitively in the kneeling posture.

Most of the investigations made before the turn of the century, used Moissen&apos;s pyrophoric manganese.3/ This material was made by electrolysis into a mercury cathode and distillation in vacuo. There was reported in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 5754/ a series of tests to determine the compressibility and bearing strength of specimens prepared from blocks of potash salt obtained from a mine near Carlsbad , N. Mex . The events leading up to the investigation were sketched in a foreword by George S. Rice , then chief mining engineer of the Bureau ( retired September 30 , 1937 ) ; this foreword also gives a discussion of the possibility of increasing the ultimate total recovery of the potash salt by " second mining" of pillars or by use of a longwall system . In June 1936 , Rice and the senior author visited Carlsbad with H. I. Smith , chief of the mining division of the Geological Survey , to observe mining then in progress and to discuss with the management of one of the mines records of convergence of roof and floor which they were obtaining . It developed that serious thought was being given to the possibility of roof failure resulting from shear at the faces of pillars . There was envisioned the danger of such cracks extending upward to water - bearing strata . Obviously , the simple compression tests of the potash salt then being made would throw no light on this question , and tests of assemblies of potash and roof salts would have to be made . In this connection it is to be remembered that in the mine no sharp division exists between the potash salt being recovered and the nearly pure halite which forms the roof . The interlocked crystalline structure is continuous , and there is merely a very rapid decrease in the proportion of sylvite in a short distance vertically . Figure 2 of Technical Paper 575 shows that two samples near the top of the salt being mined contained , respectively , 51 and 65 percent potassium chloride . Contrasted with this is an analysis of the roof salt given on page 24 of that publication , which showed only 3.6 percent potassium chloride . As the data given in Technical Paper 575 show , the roof salt is much less plastic than the potash salt . The immediate roof may then be thought of as a more rigid stratum of indefinite extent resting on and continuous with yielding supports and loaded uniformly at the rate of 900 to 950 pounds per square inch . Just what thickness of the salt should be considered as immediate roof is uncertain .

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. This report is the fourth in the series, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants. The initial work, Bureau of Mines In- formation Circular 7516, was published in October 1949 in conjunction with the synthetic liquid fuels program authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. It included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. A supplemental bibliography, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, was published in January 1955 to cover the period September 1948 through June 1952; and Supplement 2, Information Circular 7751, published in September 1956, covered the period June 1952 through June 1954. The stone-quarrying and related industries of the United States made large gains in employment in 1936 over 1935, according to reports furnished by operating companies to the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. Not only were more men employed, but also increases were made in the number of man-days of labor performed and in the number of man-hours worked in 1936. The increase in employment, however, was accompanied by an increase in the number of accidental deaths and injuries among the workers and by a slight increase in the accident-frequency rate per million man-hours worked. The fact that the larger number of accidents resulted in only a slight increase in the accident rate is explained by the large gain made in the number of man-hours worked during 1936. The accident rate in 1936, although higher than in 1935, was the lowest and therefore the best that the industry has experienced in any previous year except 1932 since complete and comparable figures first became available in 1916, a period of 21 years. Operators&apos; reports to the Bureau of Mines showed that the industry as a whole employed an average of 80,022 men in 1936 and that the men worked a total of 18,874,254 man-days or 147,064,448 man-hours. Accidents in and about the plants caused 91 deaths and 5,717 nonfatal lost-time injuries among the workers. The number of injuries and deaths represented an accident-frequency rate of 39.5 per million man-hours worked, compared with a rate of 38.2 in 1935.

The purpose of this study was to develop methods for the financial evaluation of mineral deposits. This includes the selection of the best alternative mining and processing methods and production rates. This was done by performing a financial evaluation through computer simulation using sensitivity and probabilistic risk analysis. The criterion used to measure the relative advantages of these investment and operating alternatives is the discounted-cash-flow rate of return. Included is a description of the theory and methods used in the probabilistic analysis approach, which is based on the premise that the expression of a range of values in establishing an estimate for a parameter is more realistic than the choice of a single value. Numerous simulations are made using randomly selected values of the input parameters resulting in a frequency distribution of the rates of return and their relative probability of occurrence. The sensitivity analysis method is described and combined with the probabilistic analysis to interrelate mineral reserves, capital investments, operating costs, and production rates. The ability to vary these input parameters on successive runs has permitted the selection of the best alternative mining and processing methods and production rates for a given mineral deposit. For illustrative purposes the evaluation of a mineral deposit was performed using three alternative mining and processing methods at three different quantities of resources and various production rates and prices. The computer program used in this analysis was written in FORTRAN II for maximum compatability and should run without modification on most computers having BK (8,000-word) core memory, a card reader, and printer (120 characters per line).
