Potash is one of the essential chemicals used in fertilizing soil deficient in natural minerals . Europe uses a large tonnage of potash in the form of easily soluble salts , and this is particularly true of those countries where the natural minerals in the soil have been exhausted owing to intensive cropping of the land . The application of potash to the soil in these countries is essential if normal crops are to be obtained ; during the war , some European countries were unable to obtain sufficient potash , and productivity of the farming areas declined seriously . • The largest -known deposits of potash in the world ; with the possible. exception of Russia , occur in Germany , and the German output of processed salts constituted about 65 percent of world production prior to the war . The German potash-plant installations are large , modern , brick and steel construction and apparently built for a planned operation of many years . Two districts produced approximately 80 percent of the German potash; the Werra -Fulda district , near Vacha , had the largest production , and the Sudharz district , near Nordhausen and Sonderhausen , was second . (Fig . 1. ) Hannover and Stassfurt were two smaller producers . Potash fertilizers are rated in terms of potassium oxide (K20 ) . The usual basis for calculation of production or application of the salt is to reduce the potash content to 40 percent K₂0 .

The Bureau of Mines studied the feasibility of producing copper matte in an electric furnace from blends of copper concentrate similar to those currently smelted in a gas-fired reverberatory system at an installation in Tacoma, Wash. A 800-kva electric-arc furnace was used to determine the distribution of constituents when arseniferous concentrates are being smelted in an electric-arc furnace. Test results from smelting 40 tons of materials indicated that electric smelting is more like a conventional gas-fired system than originally expected. Although gas composition over the molten bath is much different in an electric furnace, the secondary constituents such as arsenic, lead, zinc, and antimony behaved the same as in a reverberatory furnace. The results established that an electric furnace would be compatible with sulfur and particulate recovery facilities that are being used.

At the microscopic laboratory of the Bureau of Mines Intermountain Experiment Station, Salt Lake City, Utah, efforts are being made to devise methods of differentially coloring finely crashed minerals as a means for their identification. Staining would facilitate sight recognition of minerals under the microscope and would be of great value in the study of crushed ores, concentrates, and tailings. Since the treatment of ores for their beneficiation is primarily based on the recovery of the minerals containing the clements of value, it is extremely important that these minerals should be known and that a method for quickly determining them when in minute fragments should be available. Herein lies one of the greatest uses for color methods. In many cases it is a difficult matter for even the trained petrographer and mineralogist to identify finely crushed minerals quickly. Although ordinary petrographic methods are accurate, they are often time--consuming and are not suitable to the needs of millmen who require, especially in the examination of tailings a method for determining minerals by inspection.

"Modification of Quarry Process.Limestone beds are formed by processes of nature, processes that have been in operation for thousands and perhaps millions of years. Therefore, their com- position and physical properties are long-established and unalterable features over which man has no control. He must take them as he fields them.It is undoubtedly true that the character of lime depends largely on the nature of the parent limestone. A high-calcium lime cannot be manufactured from a dolomite, nor can a pure lime result from the calcination of an impure raw material. However, in the process of turning limestone into lime man is not entirely helpless in his control of quality. Even though a deposit is variable in character a single lime product of uniform quality may be produced by judicious quarrying. A single grade of product may not always be desired, the producer may wish to supply the needs of a variety of users each demanding U different grade or quality of lime such a series of graded products may be produced in part at least by modifying the quarry method. Thus, by changes in quarry practice a single product or a variety of products may be made. The latter problem will be considered at a later time, and the present paper devoted to the first named question' that of producing a single grade of lime from a deposit of variable rock,It is realized of course that uniformity in the product is influenced greatly by manufacturing processes such as calcining' hydrating' grinding or storage, but the present discussion is confined to the influence of raw materials only. In considering the various devices that may be employed it is realized that much remains to be learned, and it is hoped that many operators will contribute to the discussion as they have already done in connection with previous papers of this series."

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 47,000-acre Electric Peak study area (part of the formerly-designated RARE II Non-wilderness Recommended Area no. 1609) to evaluate its' identified mineral resources. The study area is in Powell and Jefferson Counties, YT, about 30 mi southwest of Helena and 30 mi north of Butte. Three lode localities within the study area contain an estimated 159,000 tons of identified subeconomic resources containing gold, silver, and accessory lead, copper, and zinc. Resources at those localities range from 10,000 to 134,000 tons with grades ranging from 0.04 to 0.32 oz/ton gold, 0.92 to 16.42 oz/ton silver, 0.14 to 79.65 percent lead, and as much as 0.41 percent copper and 0.68 percent zinc. One property also contains 0.15 percent antimony. Gold, silver, and base-metal content in samples of poorly exposed mineralized structures indicate that further exploration may identify resources on seven additional study area localities.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. The potential usefulness of reclaimed surface-mined land has received much attention recently. In an effort to develop a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials, specific mines in various regions of the U.S. were studied to determine the extent of current mined-land planning and to discover characteristics that are regional in nature. As part of this investigation, the Chinook Mine-West Field, located in western Indiana, has been studied. The Chinook Mine is presently operated by AMAX Coal Company and has been in continuous operation since 1928 under various ownership. The status of current reclamation and land use planning was reviewed. In addition, site planning principles were applied to the active mine area. This application included formation of a data base and development of postmining land use plan alternatives. Key factors affecting site potential realization for midwestern area mines have been identified along with suggestions for applying land use planning processes to mined-land planning.

This report describes work done in the Creede Mining district, Mineral County, Colo., in 1965-66 as a part of a Bureau of Mines study of the silver production potential of the United States. The ruining history of the district is briefly covered, and representative former and current mining operations are described. Mining and milling costs of the Emperius Mining Company's operation are given in some detail as being representative of the cost of mining typical Creede ore bodies under current technology. An estimate of the silver reserves and resources of the district is presented, subject to many uncertainties stemming from inaccessibility of old workings, lack of mining records, and low level exploration activity, all of which limit the opportunity to accurately evaluate ore potential. The report concludes with an analysis of future silver production trends in the Creede district. An increase of silver production to as much as I million ounces yearly is projected, possibly starting in 1969. As long as ore bodies in the zone of enrichment, in which silver is a major constituent, contribute a substantial part of Creede production, silver price will affect overall production rates appreciably. As the richer are bodies become depleted, an increasing portion of production again will be coming from primary sulfide ores in which silver is a byproduct of lead and zinc. When this occurs, the level of silver production will be governed chiefly by lead and zinc production and prices and can be expected to decline to the 1960-66 level, which amounts to an average of 240,000 ounces per year.

The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.5 and 3 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year product Lon period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 Indexes. Initial capital investment is $33.8 million for the 1.5-MM-tpy mine and $61 million for the 3-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $52.5 and $94.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $34.87 and $31.31 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $12.06 and $10.94 per ton for the 1.5- and 3-MM-tpy mines.

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1951, while the total crude-oil charging capacity continued to increase. There were 350 refineries as of January 1, 1952, compared with 357 a year earlier, according to the annual Bureau of Mines capacity survey. A gain of 369,241 barrels in daily refinery crude through-put capacity during 1951 brings the total to 7,332,885 barrels daily. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude-oil was 20,951 barrels daily, an increase of 1,445 barrels daily over the previous year. Capacity added in the Texas Gulf district accounted for 36 percent of the total increase; the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 23 percent; the East Coast district, 19 percent; the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 12 percent; and the Texas Inland district, 11 percent. The California district was the only one reporting a decline in crude-oil refining capacity, the total being 14,200 barrels daily below the previous year. Reported as under construction January 1, 1952, was an additional crude-oil capacity of 282,680 barrels daily, an increase of 77 percent over the January 1, 1951, total of 160,100 barrels. The capacity now building is for the expansion of existing facilities, since no new plants had been begun as of the first of the year. Three or four companies have plans to build refineries in the Williston Basin area of North Dakota, but no definite locations or dates when construction will begin have been announced.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYIn connection with a program of research work on coal at its Southern Experiment Station, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, conducts washability studies of samples of coal from coal fields in Alabama and other Southern States in which commercially important deposits of coal occur. The first such study on coal from a bed in the Arkansas field has been completed, and the results are presented in this report.One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data in connection with the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of good coking coal. Such information is important from the standpoint of conservation in that it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will yield a good grade of coking coal with a minimum of losses of coal in the rejects.The coal on which this report is based was obtained by underground and tipple sampling at the quality mine of the Quality Excelsior Coal Co. about 3 miles east of Hackett, Ark. This mine operates in the Upper Hartshorne bed, which, as the main source of coal in what is known as the Hackett-Excelsior district, yields an excellent grade of low-volatile coking coal, which is marketed at steel plants in Colorado and California. Production from this bed by the major producers in the Hackett Excelsior district was at the rate of about 125,760 tons annually in 1949, according to the Keystone Coal Buyers Manual. 2/In the laboratory, the tipple sample was crushed to 6-inch top size and screened on a 2-inch round-hole screen. The 2-inch to 0 undersize, amounting to 71.4 percent of the total sample, was fractionated into a series of screen sizes and float-and-sink products to get data for determining the washability characteristics of the coal. Before the screening and float-and-sink tests were made, however, machine cuttings, which are now gobbed underground, were added to the 2-inch to 0 sample. Enough of these cuttings were added so that the resulting mixture was considered representative of what the 2-inch to 0 run-of-mine coal would be if all machine cuttings, including the part now being gobbed, were brought to the tipple as a part of the run-of-mine coal.The mixture obtained referred to in this report as the run-of-mine or raw coal."

The Bureau of Mines has modified its parts-per-billion helium-4 analyzer to improve the analytical capabilities of the instrument. The modifications resulted in the following improvements: (1) The analytical precision of the instrument for 10 consecutive analyses was improved to ±1 ppb at the 5,000-ppb helium-4 level, (2) the helium-4 sensitivity was increased almost tenfold, and (3) the minimum detectable limit for helium-4 was improved to 0.5 ppb. The modifications made to improve the instrument included replacing the ion-source control circuit with a direct-current solid-state design, controlling the temperature of the ion source, stabilizing and reducing the pumping rate of the vacuum system, and optimizing peak integration.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. According to reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines , Department of Commerce , as of January 1 , 1930 , there were 412 completed refineries in the United States with a daily crude oil capacity of 3,755,585 barrels . This compares with 413 refineries of 3,509,540 barrels capacity on January 1 , 1929 , which indicates that whereas the number of refineries was practically unchanged , the total capacity increased 8 per cent during the past year . Of the completed plants as of January 1 , 1930 , 358 plants , of 3,634,825 barrels total capacity , were operating and 54 , with a capacity of 130,760 barrels , were shut down . Compared with a year ago , this indicates a decline in the percentage of the total refinery capacity that is inoperative . There has been a decided decrease in the number of shut-down plants since 1924 and 1925 , when one plant in every three was inoperative . Many of the inoperative plants of 1924 and 1925 were constructed soon after the boom times of 1920. Some of these were operated for a time but were unable to show a profit during 1923 and 1924 , when an overproduction of crude petroleum was accompanied by demoralized markets for refined products . Prices for refined products improved in 1925 and 1926 , but only a comparatively few of the shut -down plants , then partly obsolete , were able to obtain or renew their crude connections and compete successfully with the larger , more firmly established refineries . After five years or more of continuous idleness , a refinery would be rendered practically useless through corrosion and obsolescence . Consequently , most plants now being carried as " shut -down " have operated intermittently since 1923 . struction . A material change occurred in 1929 in the matter of plants under con- On January 1 , 1929 , there were 14 plants under construction , with a potential capacity of 99,000 barrels per day , whereas on January 1 , 1930 , there were only eight plants of 37,200 barrels capacity being built . This decline was due to the fact that the construction program in west Texas , which was at or near its height on January 1 , 1929 , was completed prior to January 1 , 1930 .

It is estimated that more than 1 trillion cubic feet of methane is contained within the coals of the Mary Lee group in Jefferson, eastern Tuscaloosa, and southern Walker Counties, Ala. Most of this methane will be encountered by mining. Coals of the Mary Lee group are presently being mined at depths exceeding 1,000 feet and will in the near future be mined at even greater depths, where the problem of methane gas affecting the mining operations will be acute. It is calculated that approximately 90 pct of the methane is at depths greater than 1,000 feet, and over half of the gas is contained within only 12 pct of the study area which is under more than 1,500 feet of over-burden. Degasification in advance of mining will increase mine safety, reduce ventilation expenditures, increase productivity, provide an additional energy source, and make it possible to mine parts of deep coalbeds that probably could not otherwise be mined.

"A recent premature explosion in a quarry that resulted in the death of nine men and the injury of several others, was directly traceable to a spark from a steam-shovel working under the face directly in front of the hole being loaded. This accident and similar accidents on record in the Bureau of Mines indicates the necessity for pointing out the dangers in quarries of explosives being ignited by sparks emitted from steam shovels and locomotives, and making recommendations for greater safety.Many premature explosions of which the following are examples, have resulted from sparks, both from steam shovels and passing locomotives. (A) The premature explosion occurred during August, 1920 at a limestone quarry, in a 100-foot drill hole, loaded with 1000 pounds of high-grade nitroglycerin and gelatin dynamites. This hole had been loaded with 500 pounds of 75 per cent strength gelatin dynamite, 300 pounds of 60 per cent straight nitroglycerin dynamite, and 200 pounds of 50 per cent straight nitro¬glycerin dynamite; but no steaming had been placed in the hole. The powderman loading the hole saw the spark enter the hole and was able to run a short distance before the explosion took place, thus escaping serious injury. The explosion of this first hole was transmitted to nearby hole similarly charged. The fall of rocks from these two holes buried the steam shovel and some of the gang of men working around it.(B) In September, 1909, in the Canal Zone, a steam shovel uncovered a misfired charge of dynamite. While the dynamite was being picked up the steam shovel continued working nearby. A spark from the shovel set fire to some loose dynamite spilled on the ground from the troken cartridges. This fire was transmitted to a hole which was being loaded close by and caused a premature explosion. One man was injured."

A recent report evaluating silica exposure levels in the metal/nonmetal mining industry noted that bag packaging and loading are some of the occupations at the greatest risk. In addition to dust problems, the bag-stacking process is labor intensive, making lost-time injuries common due to back fatigue and strains. During the bag-stacking process, a significant amount of dust can be generated, mainly from product on the outside of the bags and from dust escaping the bag valve upon impact of the bag on the pallet. In an effort to address dust-exposure and back-fatigue issues, Malvern Minerals Co., Hot Springs, Ark., made two major improvements to its ground silica stacking facility. First, the company purchased a semi-automated bag palletizing system (Figure 1). With this system, the bag stacker does not lift the bags, but slides them across a metal table. Small jets of air exit through perforations in the table top (similar to an air hockey game), allowing workers to more easily slide each bag into the proper position. After each layer of bags is completed, the table slides open, and the entire layer of bags is loaded onto an underlying pallet. The table then closes, readying it for another layer of bags. After the entire pallet is loaded, the unit delivers the pallet to a shrink wrap and forklift pick-up area. In addition to this semi-automated palletizing unit, Malvern Minerals purchased an Overhead Air Supply Island System (OASIS) to lower the bag stacker's dust exposure. The OASIS takes outside air, directs it through MEASURING RESPIRABLE DUST The bag stacker's respirable dust exposure was monitored using a RAM-1 instantaneous dust monitor to evaluate the impact of the various changes on the palletizing process and dust-control equipment. The bag stacker wore a vest that held the 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone, which classifies the respirable portion of dust. Flexible tygon tubing was used to connect the cyclone to the RAM-1 dust unit, allowing the bag stacker to perform the palletizing process with minimal interference. The RAM-1 measures respirable dust concentrations by light scattering with a sensing chamber. This device closely simulates gravimetric measurements when calibrated for a specific dust. This instrument is ideal for comparative evaluations, as was the case in this study. Since the RAM-1 is not an MSHA-approved instru¬ment for dust compliance sampling, the dust concen¬trations listed in this article should be used as a com¬parative value of respirable dust concentration and not to determine actual dust concentrations from a com¬pliance standpoint.

Bureau of Mines research on methods for reclaiming land disturbed by the minerals sector of the economy has produced a specific procedure for effectively germinating seed of Indian ricegrass, a drought-tolerant plant valuable for reclaiming arid and semiarid sites. This report describes the procedure which consists of acid-treating the seed followed by temperature and light cycling treatments. Use of the procedure resulted in an average germination rate of 29 percent, ranging from 18 to 56 percent. Seed subjected to long cold treatment but with acid treatment yielded an average germination rate of 9.2 percent, ranging from 6.6 to 14.7 percent. Untreated seeds (controls) gave germination rates less than 0.1 percent.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has in progress a study or the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. A major problem of this study is to compare the deliveries calculated from the gas pipe-line flow formulas commonly used, with the metered deliveries from pipe lines in operation. In order to obtain such comparisons a series of tests has bean made on 25 operating pipe lines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and California ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Study of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines was made under the general supervision of H. Economic growth in Cameroon was restricted during 1987 owing to a decrease in oil prices during 1986 and the falling value of the U.S. dollar in 1987. The yearly budget reflected a significant drop in revenues and expenditures. Taxes on imports and some exports were increased to raise revenue. The shortage of revenue and the lack of liquidity had restricted the Government's operation and investment programs. External public debt reached an estimated $3.2 billion2 representing 20.8% of the estimated gross domestic product (GDP) of $12.3 billion. The Government operated at an 8.7% deficit in 1987. The GDP growth rate had fallen to 0.6% in 1987 and was projected to remain at that level in 1988. Economic planning was managed through a series of 5-year plans. The country was under the sixth 5-year plan, which would end in 1991. The plan stressed balanced development as one method to achieve the desired results. Sources of revenue for the year included direct and allied taxes (31.2%). customs collections (31.0%), and oil royalties (28.0%). The oil royalties in 1987 represented a larger part of the budget than in 1986. In January 1987, eight African oil exporting countries, including Cameroon, formed the African Petroleum Producers' Association (APPA). The eight countries represented about 80% of the total African oil production of 5.2 million barrels per day in 1987. Cameroon produced approximately 3% of total APPA oil production. Cameroon produced approximately 68.5 million barrels of crude oil in 1987, slightly less than that produced in 1986. Earnings also fell in 1987, not only from falling production, but also from declining oil prices and the fall in value of the U.S. dollar on world markets. Oil had been the main stimulus of Cameroon's growth throughout the past decade, and a key generator of export revenues and financial resources for the economy.
