The Bureau of Mines studied the properties of copper that had been oxide dispersion-strengthened with 2 vol pct of either yttria or alumina. Compounds of copper and aluminum or yttrium, coprecipitated from aqueous solution, were converted to oxides; the copper was reduced, compacted, sintered, and extruded. For the resulting copper-dispersoid composites, room temperature tensile properties after annealing in hydrogen, elevated temperature tensile and stress-rupture properties, and electrical conductivity were determined. Compared with oxygen-free copper, copper-2 vol pct alumina or yttria had improved strength after annealing between 400° and 1,000° C, and improved elevated temperature strength, with little loss in electrical conductivity.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the conditions required to sinter a pyrrhotite calcine into a product suitable for iron blast furnace feed . The calcine , a fine - grained iron oxide produced by roasting sulfide flotation concentrate , analyzed about 60 percent iron and 1 percent sulfur . Sintering of the calcine without prior pelletization was not successful whereas firing of preformed calcine charges yielded acceptable sinter products . Batch tests were made to study the effect of the following variables on the sinter quality : Size of green pellets in the charge , quantity and type of internal carbonaceous fuel used , depth of sinter bed , moisture content of the charge , flux additions , and binder additions . The batch and continuous sinter tests showed that minus 1 / 4 - inch pellets prepared from a mixture of the calcine , coke , dolomite , and water gave sinter cakes analyzing 57 to 61 percent iron and 0.05 to 0.02 percent sulfur .

This publication presents statistical data on oven-and beehive-coke plants in the United States. Information on the carbonizing capacity of the coke industry is important because of the close relationship between the coke industry and most of the other basic industries of our country. Coke is an essential-raw material in pig-iron production; also, coal-chemical materials are used to make fertilizers, paints, plastics, synthetic rubber, explosives, detergents, nylon, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and many other useful products necessary to sustain and improve the high standards of living in our country. Oven-coke plants in the United States on December 31, 1958, are tabulated in table 1. This tabular presentation shows the location, classification, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, coal chemicals produced, and name and address of parent company for each individual coke plant. About 86 percent of the capacity of slot-type coke ovens in the United States is owned by iron and steel companies. In most of these plants the coke ovens are integrated with the blast furnaces to facilitate transportation of raw materials for steel making. This has resulted in large coke plants, and the average annual coke capacity of "furnace" plants in 1958 was 1.3 million tons. Nonfurnace or "merchant" plants include coke plants associated with chemical operations, gas utilities, as well as coke plants that produce metallurgical, industrial) and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials for sale on the open market. These plants ordinarily are not as large as furnace plant~ and annual coke capacity of merchant plants in 1958 averaged only 500 thousand tons. At the end of 1958 there were 55 furnace plants and 22 merchant plants.

Economy in blast-furnace practice depends largely upon efficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of the furnace. If efficient work is not done in the shaft the hearth and bosh will not function properly. A condition may be readily imagined where the particles of ore in the shaft are so large that the time entailed in the descent of these materials into the bosh is not sufficient to permit proper reduction and preparation prior to the time the ore enters the bosh of the furnace. Another condition may be pictured where the density of the stock column and the flow of stock is such that the ore will take one course and the gas another. Both of these examples will result in insufficient contact between the gas and the ore. Unreduced ore will reach the hearth, and gas which has not been efficiently oxidized will reach the stock line. The result is the use of an excess of carbon in the smelting process. An example of the result of inefficient gas-solid contact in the shaft of a blast furnace is shown by the curves in Figure 1.

To determine whether magnetite consumption could be reduced and salable coal production increased by using froth flotation units in series with magnetic separators, the Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory froth flotation tests on primary magnetic separator effluents obtained from three coal preparation plants. Tests were performed in a standard 500-gram-capacity laboratory batch flotation cell. Oleic acid and methylisobutyl carbinol were used as the collector and frother, respectively. Magnetite recovery was comparable to that expected from secondary magnetic separation, and salable float coal recoveries of 0,8 to 7.6 tons per hour were obtainable. The economics of the proposed technique appear to be sound.

"INTRODUCTION One of the major activities of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and the mineral industries. Research is undertaken in connection with these problems to determine the explosion and ignition hazards of combustible gases, liquids, and solids and to investigate means of reducing them.Occasionally the Bureau is asked to determine inflammability or ignition temperatures to enhance safety in nonrnineral industries. From time to time it has complied with such requests when no other agency was available to do the work and the investigation could be conducted with a minimum of time and expense. The present investigation is one of this class.Nicotine (C10H14N2), a colorless combustible liquid having a boiling point of 246°C, is usually obtained from tobacco and its products by extraction processes. When heated to its boiling point it decomposes; the purified product is obtained from tobacco extractions by distillation at reduced pressures or is distilled in a current of inert gas.It has an unpleasant odor, a burning taste, and in the undiluted state is highly toxic. Under certain conditions it can be oxidised to nicotinic acid and in the near future may therefore become of considerable economic importance. Nicotinic acid is a component of the vitamin B complex now commonly used to fortify white flour and other foods that normally are deficient in these vitamins."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the production of hydrogen cyanide by reacting powdered coal (minus 300 mesh) with ammonia at 1,250° C in a bench-scale study. Both metallic and ceramic reactors were used. Yields up to 0.7 cu ft of hydrogen cyanide per cubic foot of ammonia consumed r- obtained. The resulting ammonia conversion of about 75 volume-percent approximates conversion obtained commercially in processes utilizing natural gas and platinum catalysts. The coals that had higher volatile-matter contents gave the best yields of hydrogen cyanide. Allowing the coal to adsorb ammonia before reaction resulted in increased yields of hydrogen cyanide. Cost studies for a plant with a 40-million-pound-per-year capacity indi-cate that hydrogen cyanide can be profitably coproduced with carbon black, from coal and ammonia, at the current market price of hydrogen cyanide (11.5 cents/lb). These figures are based on heating the reactor electrically. If a cheaper heating method were devised the economics of the process would be more favorable.

"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling near the village of Tennyson in Grant County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the war program.The area for special investigation was selected on the basis of favorable structural disclosures, evidence of widespread zinc mineralization, absence of any great amount of exploration to depth beneath the productive shallow workings, and the favorable results of several churn-drill holes in the village of Tennyson.During the Bureau's investigation, 30 churn-drill holes aggregating5,888 feet were completed.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to-the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Efficient and safe use of mobile roof supports (MRS) depends on the interaction between the MRS and coal strata. Of particular interest to this study are the mechanics of strata deformation as influenced by geologic conditions, pillar extraction methods, and MRS load-bearing capabilities. To provide a better understanding of the mechanics of strata deformation, the authors have collected and reviewed measurements of convergence and stress in one western U.S. mine and have completed pseudo-three-dimensional, boundary-element modeling for two typical pillar-pulling plans. Stress distribution in the mine roof above pairs of MRS’s was calculated to demonstrate how MRS’s contributed to the control of roof block movements. It was shown that overall stress and roof-floor convergence patterns were most influenced by the stiffness of coal-measure rocks and by pillar-pulling sequences and layouts. MRS’s and other support systems play a critical role in controlling the stability of both the immediate roof and the middle roof for a distance of up to 18 m (60ft) above the seam. MRS’s provide unique ground control advantages over other types of secondary support by significantly reducing the time between mining and installation of secondary support. Although MRS’s are similar to posts in stiffness and capacity, they are more effective than posts under static loads because they can yield and still maintain loads at near-peak capacity, whereas posts fail and loose their ability to limit mine roof deformation.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the Items is confidential. It present's analytical data for 4,608 samples, representing the products of 101 companies. The samples were collected during December 1956, January and February 1957. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the Notional Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the post 10 years is given on page 5.

[Fugitive Just is generated alone unpaved mire reads from intermittent equipment traffic. Typically, the majority of such traffic consists of trucks hauling either mine product or waste [rum the surface mime pit and/or the processing plant. Fugitive dust generated along these unpaved mine roads includes particles of all sizes which become airborne. The potential hazards include the deleterious effects to human health of inhaled dust, traffic visibility hazards and environmental impacts on the localized area by the larger-sized visible airborne dust. Two held surveys were recently conducted to quantify fugitive dust generation and dispersion from truck traffic on unpaved and untreated mine haulage roads For these surveys., airborne glow sampling was conducted at multiple sampling fixations away from an unpaved haulage road at a limestone quarry/plant and at a coal mine preparation plant lo measure the size characteristics, concentrations. and dispersive behavior of the dust cloud generated from truck traffic- Results show that at least 80% of the airborne Just generated by haul trucks was larger than 10 µm- Airborne respirable, thoracic, and total dust concentrations all decreased and approached background concentrations 30.5 in (100 feet) from the road This report describes the average and instantaneous peak dust levels that were measured tip to 30.5m (100 feet) Iron the haulage road. The Bureau of Mines investigated a glass containing approximately 17 percent lithia and 83 percent silica to establish a method of devitrifying cast and rolled shapes. Glass shapes with high strength were made by melting, forming, and rapid cooling of the composition, and the shapes subsequently were converted to a crystalline condition by heat treatment. The best devitrification schedule included rapid cooling of the glass to below 300° C, followed by reheating at a rate of 50° to 400° C per hour, depending on the size of the shape, followed by a of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C and another period of 15 hours at 800° C. attempts to use faster heating rates or slow cooling to accomplish devitrification in deformation of the shapes. The crystalline shapes had flexural strengths that averaged over 33,000 psi, achieved with an annealing time of 60 to 70 hours at 500° C.

"INTRODUCTIONEpidemiologic studies of workers in chromate-ore related industries, 1-3 and stainless steel welding and related occupations4 have shown that they have about 20-40 times higher risk of throat or respiratory track cancer than controls. Although the actual carcinogenic substances were not identified in these statistical studies, Cr(VI) compounds (for example, calcium chromate, zinc chromate, and lead chromate) were implicated as the causative agents, whereas Cr(III) compounds were not suspected as carcinogens. s These suggestions were supporte4 by laboratory studies wherein many Cr(VI) compounds produced sarcomas at the implant or injection sites.1,5 Squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas closely resembling human lung cancer were induced by intrabronchial implants of calcium chromate in rats, 6·7 whereas Cr(DI) oxide and Cr(lll) sulfate did not induce any tumor formation.6,7While the mechanism of the chromate-induced carcinogenicity is not fully understood, it is generally thought8 that it involves some damage to DNA. Specifically, it has been reported that: a) the chromate ion, henceforth referred to as chromate, can pass through the cell membrane and enter the cell while CR(DI) does not, 9 b) chromate does not interact with either native or denatured DNA 10 while Cr(III) does, 11 and c) the final Cr-DNA complex isolated from cellular reactions of chromate is Cr(III)-DNA, with Cr(III) binding to the phosphate groups.12,13 Thus the important question is: since Cr(DI) cannot pass through the membranes, how does Cr(III)-DNA complex form? For this to happen, Cr(VI) must be reduced to its lower oxidation states, 14 ultimately to Cr(III), by some reductants in the cellular environment. Unless this reduction occurs, the DNA would not be damaged and therefore no chromate carcinogenicity would ensue. Thus the reduction of chromate to its lower oxidation states seems to be a key step in the chromate carcinogenicity .1s One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be glutathione (GSH), both outside and inside the cells.16-lB Some evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity was provided by recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selemite increases the levels of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks,19 and that such DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to the GSH content. 20,21 These observations were interpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH to some reactive intennediate is an important step in the chromate carcinogenicity. 20.21 In · the present undenaking22 we have used electron spin resonance (ESR) and spin-trap methodology to investigate the reduction of chromate by GSH and find evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl radical (GS ·) as well as Cr(V)-intermediates."

To investigate the effects of flow geometry on laminar flames, studies are in progress in this laboratory employing Bunsen-type burners with rectangular cross section. Interpretation of these studies requires a determination of the flow velocity at all points of the rectangular cross section for one dimensional steady laminar flow. In addition, values of the velocity gradient at the boundary for such flows are needed in the interpretation of blow-off and flash-back studies with burners of rectangular cross section. The hydrodynamical problem of steady laminar flow of a viscous fluid in channels of rectangular cross section was solved by Stokes. His results have been quoted by Love21 and by Dryden, Murnaghan, and Bateman,§/ and they have been discussed by Boussines and by Paschoud. It may be noted that the steady laminar flow of a viscous fluid in channels of rectangular cross section constitutes a hydrodynamical analogue for the problem of the torsion of an isotropic prism of rectangular cross section.

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased from 399 on January 1, 1947, to 390 on January 1, 1948. On the latter date two additional refineries were under construction , a large one in New Jersey and a small one in Texas . This Crude oil charging capacity, based on complete facilities only , increased in 1947 from 5,569,482 barrels to 6,034,252 barrels per day , owing to material gains reported in all of the larger refining districts . great increase in effective capacity is only in part the result of the completion of major new units for crude-oil processing . Much of it is due to rearrangement and minor additions to existing facilities to permit more efficient and complete utilization . Recent experience has apparently demonstrated that many processing units are capable , with greater emphasis upon maintenance and precise controls , of sustained operations at higher volumes than were indicated in their old rated capacities . This situation doubtless has caused some upward revision in capacity data .

These investigations were undertaken as part of a program to determine the optimum X-ray spectral lines to use for analyzing the wide variety of samples received by the X-ray Laboratory. Theoretical calculations and experimental data derived from these investigations show that longer wavelength spectral lines, > 2A, are very useful for many analytical problems. Because of the low fluorescence yield of the elements of atomic numbers 13-22 and the small depth of penetration of their X-ray spectral lines, these elements were originally considered to be insensitive; however, these studies show that the wide dispersion of their spectral lines, coupled with their weak beta lines, permits the use of wide collimation, thus increasing the line intensity. More importantly, the background due to scattered primary radiation is very low in the long-wavelength region.

A recording thermobalance ,vas used to determine the rates of oxidation of mol-ten tin over the temperature range 550°-900° C. Oxidation rates were found to vary widely for a given temperature, as previously reported by other investigators. 1 X-ray diffraction data indicated that the probable cause of these variations was the development of preferred orientations in the crystals forming the oxide film. No reasons for the differences in degree of preferred orientation were discovered. For relating the weight of the oxide formed (w) to the time of oxidation (t) an equation of the form wn = kt was found to best represent the experimental data. INTRODUCTION In the course of conducting investigations on the feasibility of using selective oxidation techniques for the purification of various metals in the molten state it was soon discovered that data on the oxidation of molten metals and alloys were very scarce. In contrast to the many hundreds of publications on the oxidation of metals in the solid state there are relatively few articles on the rates of molten-metal oxidation. In view of this scarcity of data, it was decided to institute a series of investigations into the oxidation processes of molten nonferrous metals and alloys with the expectation that the information derived could be put to practical use in developing and improving refining processes based on selective oxidation. This report is the first of a series in which oxidation data for molten nonferrous metals and alloys are presented.

The tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Piute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co. The objective of this report is to explain a statistical method for the summarization, organization, and classification of multivariate assay and other data from the mineral industry. Multivariate data are those characterized by several measurements at each data point, such as assay data from a mixed metal mine, or blast furnace data. A specific method of linear discriminant analysis, the Mahalanobis d2 procedure, is explained, starting from elementary principles; the d2 procedure enables many measurements at many data points to be studied by investigating the interrelationships among the data. The relation of linear discriminant analysis to other statistical methods for treating multivariate data, in particular the eigenvalue technique of factor analysis, is also explained. Example analyses are made on data from the Frisco mine, San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico. The data comprise assay values for silver, lead, copper, and zinc taken at some 19,000 sample points distributed into 91 groups.

A high-Btu gas was made at the Bruceton, Pa., laboratories of the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate the feasibility of using the gas as a nonpolluting fuel for automobiles. The pilot plants at Bruceton were revised to combine the processes of coal gasification, gas purification, and catalytic methanation in one overall system. Tests in the Bureau's test automobiles at Bartlesville, Okla., showed the Synthane gas was less polluting than natural gas.
