To initiate this project a critical evaluation of the pre-sent phosphate mining industry in the Western phosphate field was conducted. Mines were visited, mine operators were interviewed and pertinent literature studied. Three phosphate mining enterprises were reviewed and mining cost estimates prepared. The report discusses the present state of phosphate processing, rock alteration and location. New ideas and concepts are proposed to improve the recovery of phosphate rock from the Phosphoria formation. The report evaluates two variations to the present phosphate open pit mining methods, which were developed to improve the economics of mining phosphate and to better accomplish necessary reclamation and accelerate the time for environmental recovery. A material handling system using conveyor haulage will eliminate the need for trucks. Terrace haulback utilizes safety benches to haul and dispose of waste in the mined out pit. Ore will be removed from the pit via an inclined, cable-supported mobile conveyor.

Brazil's gross domestic product (GDP) grew only slightly in 1988 to $277 billion at current prices.2 The growth rate was the smallest registered since 1983, when the rate was minus 2.8%. The economy's performance was strongly influenced by a 2% to 3% decrease in industrial production and civil construction. The mineral industry, however, countered the downward trend in the industrial sector and grew a modest 1.4%. In November, Brazil adopted a new Constitution that placed significant restrictions on foreign investment in the mineral industries. Under certain provisions of the new Constitution, foreign companies were prohibited from establishing new mining ventures in Brazil as sole or majority owners. They could now enter the mineral industry only as minority shareholders with Brazilian partners. Foreign companies already established in Brazil had a 4-year grace period to find majority Brazilian partners, or to establish vertically integrated processing operations (mining, processing, smelting, and refining). The new Constitution also prohibited foreign risk contracts for petroleum exploration.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes Federal mandatory belt conveyor automatic fire suppression system installation requirements and inspection procedures, identifies system failure modes observed during in-mine investigations, and suggests system design and maintenance upgrades which, if implemented, would result in an improvement in overall system reliability. This report is a compilation of recommendations based on discussions with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors, review of manufacturer's literature, discussions with mine personnel, and research investigations of automatic fire suppression system performance in the laboratory and in mines. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requirements for installation, inspection, and maintenance of fire suppression systems should be regarded as minimum standards.

A study of certain gas making and fuel problems peculiar to the gas industry of California has been made by the Bureau of Mines. The work was done at the request of, and in cooperation with The California Gas Research Council 2, for the purpose of obtaining basic information on the gas-making fuels available to California, and their applicability to the present and future needs of the gas industry in that State. The data obtained have been applied in outlining a construction program, and indicate the possibilities in efficiently utilizing fuels in making gas by other than the oil-gas process. This paper presents an outline of the study and a summary of the principal results obtained, with some of the more important conclusions and recommendations based on this data. Gas is produced in California by processes which are both unique and different from those common to other parts of the United States. The bulk of the manufactured gas is made in and distributed from two main districts which are centers of population - namely, the Los Angeles district and the San Francisco Bay district. The gas manufactured in the Bay district is, almost exclusively oil-gas, whereas that produced in the southern part of the State, where natural gas is available, is mostly mixed natural gas and reformed-gas, but oil-gas is the chief product when the supply of natural gas is inadequate. Practically all of the gas companies are equipped with oil-gas generating apparatus, and anticipate using it in the future. As the continued use of the oil-gas process to the exclusion of all other processes, depends upon a continued supply of oil at a low cost, and the prospect of obtaining such low-priced oil in the future is somewhat uncertain, the questions have arisen: What will the future gas-making process or processes be? When will it be necessary to make plans for the installation of different gas generating equipment, and what will that equipment comprise?

The objectives of the coal-research activities of the Bureau of Mines are very well expressed in the organic act of Congress establishing the Bureau. It reads as follows: That it shall be the province and duty of the Bureau of Mines, subject to the approval of the Secretary of the Interior, to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining, and the preparation, treatment and utilization of mineral substances with a view to improving health conditions, and increasing safety, efficiency, economic development, and conserving resources, through the prevention of waste in the mining, quarrying, metallurgical and other mineral industries; to investigate explosives and peat; and on behalf of the Government to investigate the mineral fuels and unfinished mineral products belonging to, or for the use of, the United States, with a view to their more efficient mining, preparation, treatment, and use; and to disseminate information concerning these subjects in such a manner as will best carry out the purposes of this act.

Bureau of Mines engineers end others have endeavored to deter-nine a fundamental method for gauging the capacity of gas wells to deliver gas under different pressure conditions. Their studies show that for accurate gauging two factors must be determined: (1) The actual pressures at the face of the sand in the well (usually referred to as "at the sand"), acid (2) the relation between such pressures and the rates. of flow of c as through the sand. This paper, the first of a series, describes a method of attacking the problem of determining the actual pressures at the sand by means of observations of pressures and volumes at the well head.

The Bureau of Mines established geologic factors affecting the mining of the Lower Kittanning coalbed to aid in coalbed minability studies and examined the occurrence of "wants" (places where coal is missing) and types of unstable roof rock strata. Trends established from mapping, including prediction of areas of high methane emissions, were extrapolated to unmined areas. "Wants" in the coalbed are of two types: Erosional and depositional. Erosional features occur where north-south-trending sand-filled channels cut into the coalbed. Variations in depositional environments have caused the coalbed to "split" into several thinner units. Slickensides, commonly indicative of unstable roof, are adjacent to and on the underside of sandstone channels; they were caused by differential compaction and by soft sediment sliding along the contact between the sandstone and adjacent shale. The frequency of unstable roof also increases where the interval between the Middle and Lower Kittanning coalbed is less than 30 feet. The zones of weakness at the contacts above and below the Middle Kittanning coalbed are the controlling factors for unstable roof in these strata. Methane emissions from the coalbed are controlled primarily by depth, fracture permeability, and rank of coal. Local geologic factors are coalbed thickness, associated rock strata, structure, and proximity to outcrop.

The Bureau of Mines substantially reduced shale degradation in a coal mine by two spray coat applications of a water-base epoxy sealant. More than 12,700 square feet of passageways were treated, and in 18 months only one failure occurred. This failure was due to improper spray application, Material costs averaged 13 cents per square foot, and labor costs were 7 cents per square foot. Labor included moving all materials into the mine, the setup time for each of the areas coated, and application of coatings.

A gas volumetric method was developed for determining metallic aluminum at the 0.01-to 0.3-percent level in 100-gram samples of recycled glass. The method is based on the measurement of the change in gas volume produced by the reaction 2 Al + 2 NaOH + 2 H2O ? 2 NaAl02 + 3 H2 using a simple apparatus assembled from readily available glassware. Apart from sampling errors, the precision of the method is within ±5 percent. A minor modification of the apparatus would extend the method to larger samples or samples of higher metallic aluminum content. Metallic iron and metallic zinc do not interfere at the concentrations found in recycled glass recovered from incinerator residues.

The flame safety lamp with metal-gauze enclosure was invented by Sir Humphrey Davy more than a century ago, primarily for its safe light; however, it soon became the standard device for detecting the presence of methane in mine atmospheres. It still is the most widely used device for this purpose and is also the most practicable means of detecting deficiency of oxygen in coal mines. A permissible flame safety lamp is similar in all respects to one that, after a series of tests, has been approved by the Bureau of Mines as safe for use in gassy mines. However, safety depends largely upon the way lamps are maintained and used.

The objective of the research reported in this publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines was to devise a mineral dressing procedure that would concentrate zinc silicate minerals from certain deposits in southwestern Missouri. The best flotation results were obtained by batch laboratory flotation using sulfidizing agents and ethoxylated cocoamine. The flotation concentrate contained 70 percent of the zinc at a grade of 47.8 percent. Gravity concentration tests showed that 55 percent of the zinc could be recovered at a grade of 48.3 percent.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed a new technique for bonding strain gauges to rock bolts. These instrumented bolts are used to determine load at intervals along the length of the bolt so that reliable, consistent measurements for the design of support systems can be obtained. In this Information Circular, this technique is described in detail and should result in improved miner safety in underground mines.

An investigation of the production of iron in the blast furnace is obviously not an easy subject for research . Enough is known of the mechanical , thermal and chemical conditions existing inside the furnace to say certainly that they are complicated. Furnace operators have found that the process is sensitive to a number of known and to many unknown operating conditions . In order to form any conclusions of value , it seems necessary to collect a large amount of data taken with considerable care and accuracy. These facts make a blast furnace research difficult but not impossible . The most serious obstacle in attacking the problem comes from the fact that it is useless in the design and operation of the blast furnace to use the method of " trial and error , which has proved valuable in so many other industrial problems . The variables are so interrelated and are so dependent one on the other that the number of experimental combinations to be tried is enormous . There are certainly not less than twenty factors in furnace operation and design that are known to influence the results . This is apparent if it is remembered that a phrase like " size and shape of the furnace" includes height of the furnace , height , diameter and angle of the bosh , inwall batter , stockline diameter , and furnace volume ; and that a phrase like " chemical and physical properties of the fuels charged " includes size and shape of the lumps , density, porosity and strength of the coke , in addition to its chemical analysis . Let us suppose that we need choose for each of twenty factors one of two values , for example , suppose we must say only that the furnace shall be " tall " or " short , " that the bosh angle shall be " flat " OF "steep , that the ore shall be " coarse " or " fine , " or that the blast has to be "hot" or " cold , " the number of resulting combinations is more than one million . In putting twenty pennies on the table , either heads up or tails up, the number of permutations possible is the twentieth power of two , slightly more than one million. It is obvious , therefore , that some sort of mathematical relationship , a set of rules of thumb , laws , curves or the like , are needed . Whether the relationships , curves or formulas are derived from experiment , from theory, or from mere guess -work, makes no difference provided they agree with the known facts . If they do not agree with known facts , they are worthless no matter what their origin or how weighty the " authority" vouching for them. Few such relationships have appeared in blast- furnace literature , and it may be doubted whether such formulas can be discovered .

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. The surface and crushing plants are described, and milling practices are presented in dotail with explanation of the filter plant and assay office. Detailed oil yield, lithologic, and mineral distribution data are presented for core and drill-cutting samples from the Western Oil Shale Corp. Project Utah EX-1 Corehole (WOSCO EX-I), drilled to sample a deeply buried oil-shale sequence in the Green River Formation of Utah's Uinta Basin. Drilling of this corehole was part of the evaluation of this site for possible oil-shale development by nuclear explosion. Sections sufficiently thick for nuclear development average 15 gallons per ton or less and consist predominantly of low-grade shales. Some properties of low-grade shales may be advantageous to a nuclear experiment by facilitating breakage, fracture development, and in situ retorting. The formation correlates precisely with the well-studied oil shales 25 miles east near the Colorado border. A 235-foot mineralized section containing nahcolite, shortite, and searlesite whose bottom lies 300 feet above the Mahogany zone is described.

The Bureau of Mines began development of fluorite here February 10, 1945, and completed its survey on June 21, 1946.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. As part of its effort to reduce the environmental impact associated with mining and metallurgical operations, the Bureau of Mines used a modified form of the Environmental Protection Agency's Extraction Procedure toxicity test on copper reverberatory slags that contained low, medium, and high levels of the impurity elements As, Pb, Sb, Bi, and Zn. All tests resulted in extracts that did not exceed those limits published in the May 19, 1980, Federal Register; there-fore, these solid wastes were designated as nonhazardous for most landfill disposal situations. However, arsenic and lead levels disturbingly close to the allowable limits--and even higher levels of copper and zinc, for which there are no established limits--leached from the high-impurity-element granulated slags. These slags should be handled in such a way so as to minimize the possibility of water contamination. One baghouse dust was tested according to the EPA procedure and found to exceed the extract limits by a factor of 10. This solid waste may be considered hazardous.
