Preliminary solvent extraction studies , reported by the Bureau of Mines (5) , have been continued and expanded to improve on the previous estimate of process requirements . The solvent extraction portion of the process was examined at a scale large enough to enable meaningful extrapolation of the results to geometrically similar equipment of plant size . About 82 pct of the beryllium was recovered from approximately 0.5 pct beryllium oxide (Be0) Spor Mountain , Utah , ore by a process involving ( 1 ) sulfuric acid leaching , ( 2 ) counter current decantation (CCD ) washing , (3 ) iron ( III) reduction by sodium hydrosulfide ( NaHS ) , ( 4 ) beryllium solvent extraction by di - 2- ethylhexyl phosphoric acid ( EHPA) , ( 5 ) caustic stripping of beryllium- bearing EHPA, (6 ) hydrolysis of sodium beryllate - caustic strip liquor , and (7 ) calcination of beryllium hydroxide (Be ( OH ) 2 ) formed in step (6 ) . The resulting beryllia assayed 98 to 99 pct Be0 and was suitable for most nonnuclear uses . Best overall results were obtained by using pH 2 , 1.6 grams of BeO per liter of leach liquor as feed and 0.25 N EHPA in kerosine containing 2 wt vol pct (grams per 100 ml of solution ) isodecanol ( IDA ) as solvent . Analysis of the data indicated that a commercial plant would achieve 95- pct overall extraction operating at 45 ° C with 20 hp per 1,000 gal of dispersion in each of seven mixer- settlers , having 290 gal per ton of ore hourly mixer capacity and 90 gal per ton of ore hourly settler capacity . At least 79 lb H2SO4 , 13 lb sodium hydroxide (NaOH ) , 3 lb NaHS , 0.25 lb kerosine , 0.07 lb polyacrylic flocculant , 0.03 lb EHPA , and 0.007 lb IDA would be required in H2SO4 leaching and subsequent processing to recover 1 lb BeO .

A remote-actuated stench gas fire-warning system has been designed and tested by the Bureau of Mines. This system makes use of the hard-wire network for the mine's phone pager system, thus greatly reducing the system cost. By locating stench gas canisters with remote-actuation release capabilities near working sections, the fire-warning time can be greatly reduced. In a test of the system in a Missouri lead mine, the time required to warn miners of a fire at two working faces was reduced from about 20min with the conventional system to less than 4 min with the remote-actuated system.

Knowledge of the types of naturally occurring sulfur compounds in petroleum is of both theoretical and practical interest to petroleum chemists and geologists. This knowledge has been extended by the identification of 77 sulfur compounds, including 36 thiols, 23 chain sulfides, and 18 cyclic sulfides in a 111° to 150° C boiling range distillate of Wasson, Texas, crude oil. The characterization procedure used in separating and identifying these compounds included isothermal distillation, vacuum fractionation, liquid-solid chromatography (alumina adsorption), chemical treatment, gas-liquid chromatography, microdesulfurization, and infrared analysis. The procedural steps described represent a systematic method of sulfur compound analysis considered applicable for determining the nature and concentration of the sulfur constituents present in any straight-run petroleum distillate of the above-boiling range.

"INTRODUCTION 'The investigation reported herein is part of a comprehensive research program being conducted by the Metal Mining Research Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, on pressure problems in underground mines. This program was initiated in 1937 and for the first 3 years was concerned primarily with measurement of the pressure on mine pillars and supports and their strength. 4/ 5/ During this period, investigations were conducted in both the laboratory and the field in the comparatively shallow load and zinc mines of Missouri and Oklahoma. As a result a seismic method of determining the pressure on mine pillars was developed.Before this research program was initiated, Chas. F. Jackson, chief of the Mining Division, suggested that rock under pressure might give rise to noises inaudible to the unaided ear - that is, subaudible noises. As a result of this suggestion, listening tests were made concurrently with the routine pressure measurements to see if any rock noises were present; with one exception, it was found there were no rock noises in any of these shallow mines. At the same time, pressure measurements disclosed that, with one exception, pillars were not under pressure amounting to more than 10 percent of the crushing strength of the rock. The one exception was a pillar in the Big John mine of the Eagle Picher Mining & Smelting Co. in the Tri-State district, which showed some physical evidence of failure, such as small cracks and spalling; it was reported that the pillar had been heard to crack or snap at intervals. Listening tests in this pillar disclosed that subaudible noises of comparatively small intensity were present and occurred at 1- to 2-minute intervals, on the average. Unfortunately, owing to the shortness of this pillar it was impossible to make any pressure measurements."

The major fire and fire injury findings for all metal/nonmetal mining categories for 1990-2001 are shown in tables 64-65. Table 66, partly illustrated in figure 22, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays for all metal/nonmetal mining categories by time period. For all metal/nonmetal operations (including stone and sand and gravel), a total of 518 fires occurred during 1990-2001; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities (Ewhr = 4,012 x 106 hr, In = 0.015, LWD = 36,204). Thirty fires and 26 injuries involved contractors. The greatest number of fires and fire injuries occurred at surface operations; the highest risk rate values were also calculated for surface operations. The number of fires increased during the first four 2-year time periods (1990-1991, 1992-1993, 1994-1995, and 1996-1997), then decreased during the last two periods (1998-1999 and 2000-2001). The number of injuries showed a decrease throughout the periods, accompanied by an increase in employees' working hours. Twenty-five firefighting interventions by mine rescue teams in underground mines and at least 30 interventions at surface operations were required to combat these fires. However, 45 fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. Ninety-seven fires were detected late, and 30 fires were undetected. The ignition sources that caused the greatest number of fires were flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame (169 fires or 33% with 137 injuries), hydraulic fluid/fuel sprayed onto equipment hot surfaces (89 fires or 17% with 46 injuries and 3 fatalities), heat source/explosion and flammable liquids/ gas/refueling fuel on hot surfaces (98 fires or 19% with 73 injuries), electrical short/arcing (51 fires or 10% with 16 injuries), and spontaneous combustion/hot material (46 fires or 9% with 17 injuries). The flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame source caused fires usually involving welders' clothing or oxyfuel/grease and other materials (including chute and dust collector liners, flammable liquids, belt material, crusher, hopper and shaker deck materials, washer plants, equipment mechanical components, stampler breaker, hydraulic fluid, rubber tires and hoses, gear boxes, bin feeder, dump rope cables, screen liner and screen panel, kiln and shaft material, pipelines, liquor pumps, wood pallets, electrical junction boxes, handrails, grease, refuse, shop and wood). The spontaneous combustion/hot material and electrical fires were usually detected late due to lack of combustion gas/smoke detection systems. The Bureau of Mines analyzed rotary-coring-operations data to compare mud and air as coring mediums, and to compare core recoveries, penetration rates, and cost data for the respective mediums as part of an investigation of the susceptibility to secondary-recovery techniques of petroleum reservoirs in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This report describes the rotary-diamond coring equipment and operations employed while coring 20 wells--10 cored using mud, and 10 cored using air. Data relevant to the draw works, rotary-table power, drill pipe, drill collars, core barrel, core head, mud pumps, or air compressors are tabulated. Average bit weight and rotary speed, core recovery, and penetration rates are listed for each formation cored. In general, core recoveries were better from the mud-cored wells, whereas penetration rates were faster for the air-cored wells. Coring costs were about the same for single-formation wells cored with either mud or air; however, costs increased considerably when multiple-formation wells were cored with air.

To determine the behavior of chlorine in coal combustion, the Bureau of Mines burned 10 chlorine-containing coals, high-, medium-, and low-volatile, in a laboratory-scale pulverized-coal combustor. At carbon-combustion efficiencies of 94 to 98 percent, 1.6 to 7.1 percent of the chlorine or an average of 4 percent of the chlorine in the coal was retained in the ash; the balance, predominantly hydrogen chloride, was evolved in the combustion gas. Sulfur retention in the ash ranged from 2.3 to 10.7 percent or an average of 6.3 percent, Addition of alkali and alkaline earth carbonates to a medium-volatile coal containing 0.27 percent chlorine by preferentially reacting with the chlorine increased the Cl/S atom ratio in the ash, Lithium carbonate addition at 0.43 percent and K2C03 at 1.59 percent increased the C1/S ratio in the ash from 0.2 to 0.6.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the White Bird concentrator, Picher, Okla., is one of a series on milling practices being published by the Bureau of Mines. The concentrator of the White Bird mine, Canam Metals Corporation, is located in almost the geographical center of the present Picher mining cam' in the Tri-State district, one-half mile east of the town of Picher, 1 mile south of the Kansas State line, and about 18 miles west of the Missouri State line.

The influence of fuel additives on automobile exhaust emissions was studied using engines currently found in the U.S. vehicle population. The fuel additives used in the experiment were four multifunctional additives and one lead antiknock additive. Experimental work was done to determine both the direct effect of the additive per se on exhaust emissions and the influence of Long-term additive effects on emissions with mileage accumulation. Results showed no significant direct or intermediate effect on exhaust emissions for any additives tested. In subsequent experimental work concerned with the long-term or indirect effects of additives, the detergent-dispersant additives were found to have little influence on emissions when used in conjunction with high-quality oil and motor fuel. The lead (tetraethyl) antiknock additive increased exhaust hydrocarbons approximately 12 to 17 percent during a 4,000-mile accumulation period using a base fuel containing 2 ml of tetraethyl lead per gallon. An unleaded fuel was used during a similar accumulation period with no significant increase in exhaust hydrocarbons with mileage.

Relationships that may exist between assays and sample interval lengths when using unequal sample intervals in mine sampling have been investigated as part of the larger research problem of adapting statistical methods to the analysis of weighted average grades. The theoretical relationship between the amount of difference in the weighted and unweighted average grade of ore and the size of the correlation coefficient between assay value and sample interval length was found to be linear. Numerous examples of actual field sample and assay data, which have been obtained by using unequal sample intervals, are documented, and the differences between weighted and unweighted average grades of ore and the correlation coefficients between assays and sample interval lengths have been computed and plotted on graphs. Differences between these actual field data and the expected theoretical linear relationship are examined. It is hypothesized that the use of unequal sample intervals in mine sampling is, in fact, stratified sampling in a statistical context. The sampler establishes stratification by selecting unequal sample intervals on the basis of differences in lithology, changes in rock type, characteristics of mineralization, or differences in metal content. Statistically} methods currently used in mine sampling, involving unequal sample intervals, fail to consider differences in the inherent variances in grade of ore within the various strata established by using unequal sample intervals. Consequently the strata are sampled with different precision. This difference in precision of sampling between strata may account for much of the deviation between the plotted points representing actual field sampling data and the theoretical linear relationship between the amount of the difference between weighted and unweighted average grade of ore and the size of correlation coefficient between assays and sample interval lengths.

This report describes the new Bureau of Mines Core Repository System (CORES) and presents the methods for selecting, processing, and storing physical samples and descriptive data for future reference by earth scientists. The system preserves splits of chip samples and longitudinally sliced segments of core. A records retrieval system provides for storage of data on microfilm and magnetic tapes and uses the keysort parameters of location and commodity for the identification of data.

The effect of low percentages of methane (0 to 5 pet.) in an air atmosphere on spark initiated explosions of coal dust was investigated. With low dust concentrations (0.1 to 0.4 oz./cu, ft.), small amounts of methane increase the explosion pressure; with larger dust concentrations (0.5 to 2.0 oz./cu. ft.), small amounts of methane decrease the explosion pressure. The rate of pressure rise of a coal dust explosion increases with increase in methane concentration; about 3 to 4 pct. further addition of methane yields a decrease in the rate of pressure rise. Convection currents created by the air or gas blast used to disperse dust produce an increase in explosion pressure and rate of pressure rise. The minimum explosive concentration of the coal dust decreases about linearly as the concentration of methane increases from 0 to 5 pct. The explosion pressure increases linearly as the initial pressure within the chamber increases. Similarities between coal dust and methane explosions are indicated, INTRODUCTION During coal mining, methane occluded in coal or adjoining strata is liberated into the mine atmosphere,4 Normally, the methane is diluted and swept away by the ventilating air. Under some conditions, through accidental disruption of the ventilation system, sudden outburst, or because insufficient fresh air is supplied to a working place, low percentages of methane may be present during mining operations. If it is permitted to accumulate, methane itself presents an explosion hazard; its limits of explosibility arc approximately 5 and 15 pct. The Bureau of Mines investigated preheating of continuously fed, fragmented ferrous scrap charges by furnace offgases and utilizing substitutes for imported fluorspar to condition electric steelmaking slags. Three types of continuous scrap charging procedures were investigated to determine electrical energy consumption in a I-st (short ton) electric arc furnace. Cold and preheated scrap charges were continuously fed at rates averaging 37.5 and 43.7lb/min, respectively. The feed rate varied appreciably from test to test owing to hangup of the scrap in the charge bin. Approximately 7 pct less electrical energy was consumed in melting scrap preheated to 8400 to 1,1100 F by furnace off-gases than in melting cold scrap. Overall energy consumptions were 888 kW'h/st for cold scrap, 829 kW'h/st for preheated scrap" and 637 kW'h/st for conventional backcharged scrap. Stack gases from scrap preheating averaged 1200 F and a flow rate of 1,615 scfm compared with 2200 F and 1,302 sefm for cold-charged scrap. Slag conditioners tested included synthetic fluorspar, boric acid, hydroboracite, used aluminum potlining wastes and aluminum anode tailing wastes, and Sorelflux B. The boron-containing conditioners fluidized the slags the best, followed in order by the conditioners containing fluorine and titanium.

Strontium sulfide and barium sulfide occur as intermediates in commercial treatments of the impure natural sulfates to produce pure strontium and barium chemicals. Thermodynamic considerations involving these sulfides have been hampered by lack of basic data, such as the entropies at 298.15°K. This paper reports the results of heat capacity measurements of strontium sulfide and barium sulfide in the temperature range 50°-298°K. The entropies at 298.15°K. were derived from the heat capacity values. Free energies of formation at 298.15°k. were computed from the entropies and literature values of the heats of formation. Strontium sulfide and barium sulfide are thermo-dynamically less stable than calcium sulfide, but more stable than magnesium sulfide.

The principal purpose of this study was the development of an engineering and economic model of a hypothetical large-scale open pit gold mining operation. The guiding concept in developing the model was the idea that, through study of a number of such models, it would be possible to evaluate a mineral property and to make reasonable estimates of the benefits to be derived from research in mining and metallurgy. The model by use of a computer is able to produce results easily and quickly when cost factors are varied. Cost factors may be varied as a result of assumptions of improved technology or of assumptions of assuming different approaches or methods to accomplish a particular segment of the mining or processing operation. The discounted cash flow rate of return was used to measure the effect of changes in costs or expected revenue. In this study, assumptions based on past processing practices were made in an effort to reduce costs of processing the ore These assumptions were: (1) Eliminating the low-grade cyanide circuit; (2) reducing the quantity of material to be processed by screening after crushing; and (3) using a combination of assumptions (1) and (2). All three assumptions resulted in reduced capital investment and operating cost that caused substantial increases in the rate of return.

To develop alloys suitable for use at elevated temperatures, columbium and tantalum were combined with tungsten, hafnium, vanadium, zirconium, and titanium, and the resulting alloys were evaluated with respect to fabricability, hardness, Electrical resistivity, strength at elevated temperatures, oxidation resistance, and bend transition. Of the 23 compositions tested, Cb-2OHf-5W-10Ti exhibited superior high-temperature properties. A recrystallized sample of this alloy was fabricable at room temperature, had a strength of 44,000 psi at 1,200° C, and had an oxidation rate of only 7.7 mg/cm2/hr at 1,000° C.

This report summarizes part of the work performed under the USBM Contract No H0155113, "Noise Abatement of Continuous Mining Machines." It describes the noise source diagnosis of a Jeffrey 120M conveyor and the evaluation of several treatments all conducted in a test facility aboveground. The conveyor noise at the operator's position was gradually reduced from 101.5 to 93 dBA using damping, vibration isolation, sound barriers and smoother discontinuities. The underground performance of the selected treatments will be addressed in Volume II of the report.

The Dempsey tract in Washington County, Mo., had a small production of lead-zinc ore from shallow workings. Old dumps from early-day lead mining contain about 25,000 tons of ore averaging about 3 percent combined zinc and lead. Because of the urgent war requirements for lead and zinc, the Dempsey property was examined by Otto Ruhl, formerly an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in August 1942 and selected for further investigation by churn drilling twenty holes totaling 1,309 feet were bored in the fall of 1943. The results of the work are presented in this paper.
