"INTRODUCTION This report contains information on the approximate size of the smallest dust Particles revealed by or the limit of visibility of various microscopic systems. The information was obtained mainly for use in interpreting and evaluating results of number-contentration and particle-size, determinations on, samples of unhygienic particulate matter collected from industrial atmospheres and in developing better methods for determinations nations.Some speculation and even controversy have been published on the limit of visibility of the widely used microscopic system (16-mm., 0.25-or 0.3-N.A. objective, and axial light-field illumination) used in counting the dust in the liquid medium from impinger, 4/ 5/ filter-paper, 6/ and other samples, but little or no quantitative data have been published on the limits of visibility of this or other microscopic' system.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe interest, encouragement, and assistance received from H. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Diesel Research Program emphasizes the development and evaluation of emission control devices to reduce exposure of miners to diesel exhaust pollutants. Studies by the USBM have shown that diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA) contributes a substantial portion of the respirable aerosol in underground coal mines using diesel equipment not equipped with emission controls. The USBM and the Donaldson Co., Inc., Minneapolis, MN, have developed a low-temperature, disposable diesel exhaust filter (DDEF) for use on permissible diesel haulage vehicles equipped with waterbath exhaust conditioners. These were evaluated in three underground, mines, to determine their effectiveness in reducing DEA concentrations. The DDEF reduced DEA concentrations from 70 to 90 pct at these mines. The usable life of the filter ranged from 10 to 32 h, depending on factors that affect DEA output, such 'as mine altitude, engine type, and duty-cycle. Cost per filter is approximately $40.

Most early research on solvent extraction of coal has been concerned with the molecular structure of coal. Although rush work is continuing, practical aspects of the subject also are being emphasized. For example, development of the Pott-Broche extraction process resulted from the discovery of very efficient solvents for the pressure-extraction of coal. Recently, Orchin and Storch reported the use of even more efficient solvents under similar conditions. In addition to the discovery of more effective solvents, the possibility of efficient extraction at atmospheric pressure is obviously of practical interest. H. J. Rose observed that phenanthrene at its atmospheric boiling point readily dispersed 80 percent or more of Pittsburgh-bed bituminous coal. This fact served as the starting point of the present investigation, ill which determination of the chemical specificity of this solvent and the chemical nature of the resulting extracts was undertaken. This paper represents a progress report of the results obtained to date.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report describes a chromatographic method that is used for rapid field determinations of carbon dioxide in natural gas streams at a USBM helium production facility. The method employs a commercially available portable gas chromatograph that is equipped with a 10-m fused-silica capillary column coated with a porous polymer. The instrument operating parameters permit determinations to be performed over a concentration range of 10 ppm to 10 pct with a frequency of 20 samples/h. The speed at which determinations can be performed is an important factor when evaluating efficiency or troubleshooting processes at the helium facility.

An examination of the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) data for the period 1992-1995 shows that 659 fatalities occurred in the mining industry as defined by the SIC. Oil and gas accounted for slightly more than one-half of all fatalities (figure 1-1). The coal industry had the highest fatality rate for the 4-year period, with 35.6 deaths per 100,000 full-time workers, followed by metal (23.1 per 100,000), oil and gas (23.1 per 100,000), and nonmetal (20.1 per 100,000). The fatality rate for all U. S. industries during this same period was 5.1 per 100,000 full-time workers. Figure 1-2 compares the fatal injury rates by year for the four major industry sectors of mining to the fatality rate for all industries combined. Figure 1-3 compares age-specific fatality rates in the mining industry to those seen for U. S. industry as a whole. Fatality rates for all industries combined were lowest for young workers and steadily increased in relation to workers' ages. In the mining industry, fatality rates by age group show a U-shaped curve. Young workers under 20 years of age had the highest injury rate (54.6 per 100,000), followed by workers aged 20-24 (50.8 per 100,000) and workers over age 65 (37.7 per 100,000). Table 1-1 shows the distribution of injuries by type of injury event. The mining industry, in comparison with all industries, had a considerably larger proportion of fatalities classified as caught in or crushed by collapsing materials (9.1% and 1.9%, respectively) and fires and explosions (10.0% and 3.1%, respectively). Transportation events comprised the largest proportion of fatal injuries in both the mining industry and all industries. Within the mining industry only, transportation accounted for the largest proportion of fatalities in all mining sectors except coal. A more detailed examination of the transportation events within the mining industry showed that highway incidents (50.5%) were the most common, followed by nonhighway incidents (22.2%), pedestrian incidents (10.6%), and those incurred during rail, water, and air transport (15.7%). Incidents involving caught in or crushed by collapsing materials comprised a higher percentage of injuries in the coal and metal sectors, while fall-from-height incidents were more frequent in the oil and gas sector. The classification system used in CFOI for type of injury event is not compatible with any variables contained in the MSHA data; therefore, direct comparisons are not attempted. [ ]

The mining methods and practices used at the Young zinc mine, American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, have resulted in a low-cost, high-yield operation. Zinc ore (sphalerite) occurs in limes tone- dolomi te beds of the Kingsport Formation and is mined by modified room and pillar method. Utilizing trackless mining equipment which incorporates a high degree of flexibility, this operation has had a steady increase in productivity.

The Bureau of Mines continued its research into the recovery of fluorine by the phosphoric acid acidulation defluorination of phosphate rock concentrates. A small process development unit with a capacity of about 10 kilo-grams of charge per hour was operated, and concentrates from both Idaho and Florida were processed. Over 80 percent of the fluorine was evolved and recovered as a dilute fluosilicic acid solution. Phosphate extraction from the concentrates always exceeded 98 percent. The fluorine was converted to a synthetic fluorspar product (3CaFa?SiOa) suitable for use as a slag conditioner in electric furnace steelmaking operations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a system for casting unique, slotted steel armor by modifying the conventional expendable pattern casting (EPC) process that is normally used for making aluminum castings. Three innovations were added to the EPC process to make the successful adaptation: (1) Vacuum was applied to sand molds, (2) continuous narrow-necked feeding systems were used to permit the casting of thin walls, and (3) fixtures were designed to prevent pattern damage and to hold critical casting tolerances, Potential problems and defects are described.

The application of secondary producing methods for recovering additional oil from known fields has been recognized for many years as important to the economy of the nation. One of the most successful secondary methods is waterflooding, which conserves our natural resources by preventing premature abandoment of stripper leases and revitalizing previously abandoned areas. Waterflooding as a secondary-recovery method was introduced into the Midcontinent region in 1931, and its use as such has become widespread. As with most new methods, the most favorable fields and leases received primary attention, whereas those with viscous oil or less favorable sand characteristics were bypassed. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) implemented a real-time neural network system which can discriminate mine fires from nuisance diesel emissions as part of an atmospheric mine monitoring system in NIOSH?s Safety Research Coal Mine. The real-time response of a neural network to fire sensor outputs was demonstrated for coal and belt combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. The fire sensors consisted of an optical path smoke sensor, a carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, and two types of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors. The real time neural network was trained with coal, wood, and belt fire experiments with and without diesel emissions background. The trained neural network successfully predicted mine fires with these combustibles in the smoldering stage prior to the onset of flames.

[During the past two and a half sears the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the different coal operators, have been making an extensive studs of coal preparation in the State of Alabama. Considerable time has been devoted to the studs of the washing characteristics of the Mars Lee bed and the various methods used In preparing from it a low-ash coal suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. One of the phases of this problem is the utilization of middlings products from the washing plants. This paper gives the results of treating jig middlings on a coal-washing table at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Tuscaloosa, Ala. The sample used was secured from the Sayreton washery of the Republic Steel Corporation, Sayreton, Ala. WASHERY PRACTICE The Mary Lee bed is very bony, and operators find it difficult to produce from this bed a washed coal much under 10 per cent ash. Experience has shown that in the preparation of a coking coal from the Mary Lee bed it is best to use a process which permits the recovery of a middlings product. Middlings are desirable because separation according to specific gravity is never perfect, and a middlings product makes possible a low ash in the primary warned coal without excessive losses of combustible in the refuse. The general washery practice on the Mary Lee bed is to crush the run-of-mine coal through some maximum screen size and wash it upon some one type of jig without re-treatment of any of the products made. The maximum size treated varies from 3 inch to J inch. The middlings product from multiple-cell jigs is usually termed "boiler fuel" and when possible is utilized as such. At present the production of boiler fuel is often in excess of power requirements, and the surplus, due to its high ash content, becomes waste.]

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 191 composites from the central Mesabi Range, Minn., chiefly by reductive roasting and magnetic separation. After reductive roasting and magnetic separation at minus 325 mesh, 28 composites produced concentrates that contained an average of 66.0 percent iron with less than 10 percent silica. Recovery of contained iron was over 90 percent. Natural magnetic material in excess of 5 percent was present in 142 composites. Trial flotation tests were used to evaluate three samples unresponsive to reductive roasting and magnetic separation procedures, and satisfactory concentrates having low silica contents (averaging 6.6 percent) were achieved.

Two molten salt systems were evaluated as electrolytes for the repetitive recovery of tungsten from tungsten oxide (W03) made by calcining commercial-grade ammonium paratungstate. Using a sodium chloride-sodium fluoride-potassium aluminum tetrafluoride electrolyte at 800° C, 1 pound of 99.8 percent tungsten was recovered for each 2.7 kilowatt-hours of energy consumed. The metal contained 1,100 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of spherical grains, and had an apparent bulk density of 5.41 g/cm3. T ngsten of 99.9 percent purity was won from a sodium pyrophosphate-sodium tetraborate-sodium chloride electrolyte at 1,000° C; 6.0 kilowatt-hours of energy was consumed for each pound of metal recovered. The metal contained 120 ppm carbon, was in dendritic masses of hexagonal acicular crystals, and had an apparent bulk density of 7.25 g/cm . Each metallic impurity--aluminum, calcium, copper, iron, nickel, and silicon--in the two tungsten products was 16 ppm or less.

Thermodynamic properties of metal halides and, in particular, vapor pressures have become of great importance in recent years owing to increased application of chemical processing to extraction of metals from their ores. Vapor pressure data serve not only as a valuable source of latent heat of vaporization and fusion values but also differences in metal-halide vapor pressures often provide the basis for their separation by conventional mass transfer operations. This literature search was made to provide a ready reference to experimental vapor-pressure data of metal halides and oxyhalides. Results are reported in two main sections: (1) A tabulation of vapor- pressure references for each of the metal halides (listed by metal) for which actual experimental data are reported (table 1), and (2) a bibliography of the citations. Metal halides and oxyhalides are listed by chemical formula and chemical name, based on the stock4 system. To facilitate location of the references, a listing of the journal titles and their abbreviations follows the bibliography.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses tests conducted with four different catalytic reactor designs to determine the influences of exhaust treatment systems on emissions from diesel engines. Although there was significant differences in oxidation efficiencies at light to intermediate engine loads, all four catalysts were very effective in reducing emissions at heavy loads. Compositional determinations included carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, aldehydes, sulfur dioxide, sulfates, and particulate loading. Particulate size, exhaust odor intensity, and the character of the unburned hydrocarbon component were also determined.

Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. This report discusses the construction and use of an all-pressure psychrometric chart in which the requirements of simplicity of appearance and absolute accuracy have been waived, to a certain extent, to provide for the rapid determination of psychrometric data and for the rapid solution of air-conditioning problems of major interest to the mining industry. Many mines in which air-conditioning problems are important are situated at elevations far above sea level and embrace great differences in elevation - in excess of 8,000 feet in certain mines - throughout their airflow circuits. Under these conditions, the effects of variations in the pressure of the atmosphere upon the physical properties of the mixture of air and water vapor of which it is composed are considerable and should be taken into account in the solution of problems. The simple types of psychrometric charts in common use, such as the Carrier, Bulkeley, Hill, and Goff (American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers Guide), are not generally suitable, in that they are drawn for a single barometric pressure - 29.92 inches mercury.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to determine the slurry transport and deposition properties of coal waste. A 188.5-ft pipe test loop was constructed with instruments to measure density, flow, and power and discharge, suction, and differential pressures. A 20-ton ample of Western coal waste was crushed and screened to 100 pct minus 1/2 in. Eight loop tests using this graded waste were run at slurry densities ranging from 1.15 (25 wt-pct solids) to 1.46 (60 wt-pct sol-ids) 0 The resultant friction-'pressure gradients ranged from 0,06 to 0.24 ft of water per foot of 4-in standard steel pipe. Particle-size degradation was significant.. In a typical loop test lasting 25 min, the minus 200-mesh fraction increased from 19 pct to 34 pct. Deposition tests showed that without the use of a flocculant, the slurries would not dewater when left to stand for 1 week. With flocculant, additional water was releas2d; however, the settled slurries remained thixotropic. Further testing is necessary to determine their suitability for use as backfill material in active mines.
