The other South Pacific islands included in this chapter extend from Papua New Guinea, east of the Indonesian Province of Irian Jaya on the island of New Guinea, to Fiji, straddling the 180° meridian. A number of islands have been omitted from this chapter owing to the fact that their only mineral production remained insignificant to the economy of the respective country or territory. These islands include the French overseas territories of French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna Islands; the independent states of Kiribati, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu; the New Zealand freely associated state of the Cook Islands; and the New Zealand dependency of Niue. The mineral production that did exist in these islands was limited to construction materials such as coral reef limestone, crushed stone, and sand and gravel in minor quantities used solely for domestic consumption. FIJI Fiji, an archipelago in Melanesia consisting of 300 islands ranging from tiny coral atolls, cays, and rugged coral limestone islets to the larger mountainous, volcanic islands of Kadavu, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, and Viti Levu, straddles the 180° meridian about 1,800 kilometers south of the Equator. Fiji has been an independent member of the British Commonwealth of Nations since October 10, 1970.

"IntroductionA study of 256 coal-mine explosions, which occurred during the period 1909-1924 killed 4113 men and injured 570 others, reveals the fact that there are the critical times of day when explosions are most likely to occur, and when corresponding care should be exercised to guard against disaster. Of these 256 explosions, 83 straight as explosions, 89 were straight coal-dust explosions, and 81 were mixed gas and dust explosions, while three were undetermined.It has been determined from the times given in these reports (in several cases no times were given,that the critical period in the morning ranges between 6 and 9 o'clock when 83 explosions took place with a peal. at 7;30 o'clock. Of these 55 were straight gas explosions, the remainder being either coal dust or mixed gas and coal dust explosions. The critical period in the afternoon or early ranges between 3 and 7 o'clock, when 113 explosions took place, with a peak at 6 o'clock. Of these, 87 wore straight coal-dust explosions the remainder being neither gas or mixed gas and coal-dust explosions. Between these morning and evening periods is one which might be called the noon period - that is, from 11m to 7. p. m. - when 26 explosions occurred while some of these were normal type of explosions - that is, as to causes - others were of unusual cause and character, and. are discussed later. A number of explosions (29 in all) took place during mid-afternoon, late at night, and early in the morning - that is, after midnight."

The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 3/16-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.

A Helix Pressure Gauge to Indicate roof bolt loads was designed, fabricated and field tested. The gauge indicated loads between 3,000 and 15,000 pounds with a ± ten per cent error. The coat of fabrication of the gauge was estimated to be $3.39 including an assumed overhead and profit per indicator for a series production of 5,000 unite. The unit can be read on a bolt to within ± 1,000 pounds load from a distance of twenty feet.

The objective of this contract was to monitor operating conditions of, four flooded, fibrous-bed filter panels used during normal underground mining operation and to analyse clogging and structural problems. After observing structural and clogging problems and conducting laboratory and field tests, a final, Flooded, fibrous-bed filter design which minimizes clogging and structural problems was recommended to the Bureau of Mines. This report also describes the dust sampling procedures used to determine the dust concentration at the flooded, fibrous-bed scrubber intake duct.

Primary standard gas mixtures were developed for more accurate calibration of analytical instruments at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center and for calibration of analytical instruments used in the helium conservation program. A 10-kg-capacity balance is used to weigh a 4-kg metal cylinder filled to high pressure (1,800 psi maximum) with the component gases of the desired mixture. At 1,800 psi, a cylinder contains about 60 g of helium, or 420 g of nitrogen. An accuracy of ±0.05 mole-percent or better is claimed for each component in the mixtures.

The storage stability characteristics of a diesel type fuel were determined to evaluate the effect of the polar compounds in the fuel. These compounds, comprising most of the nitrogen and oxygen containing compounds and many sulfur containing compounds, were separated from the fuel with a chromatographic column. This fraction was further separated into three polar extracts by graded elution through the column. Each extract was characterized. A storage program using the depolarized fuel, the fuel as received, and blends of the extracts with both fuels, was conducted. Results showed that the removal of the more polar components stabilized the fuel. Blending the polar extracts with the original fuel and with the depolarized fuel in the same ratio as they existed originally and at two and three times the original ratio increased the amount of gum present before storage, but had little effect on the formation of additional gum during storage. Distillate fuels produced by commercial refining of petroleum contain traces of organic nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen compounds that are more polar4 than the remainder of the fuel. Recent laboratory studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1),6 in which these compounds were removed from a fuel, have shown that they influence its storage stability. The objective of this work was to determine the amount of these compounds present in a fuel and their effect upon its stability in storage. To evaluate the role of these polar compounds, it is necessary to remove them from the distillate fuel. Many can be removed by chemical treatment (2), but such treatment precludes reblending the polar components to approximate the original fuel composition. Solvent extraction is free of some of the criticism of chemical treatment, but it is more difficult because of the complex mixture from which compounds must be removed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the operational characteristics of spliced portable power cables. This research had a dual purpose: (1) to determine the thermal and mechanical performance of repaired trailing cables and compare them with undamaged cables and (2) to gauge the impact of long-term, localized heating on the insulating and jacketing materials contained in cable splice kits accepted or approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The ranges of splice joint resistance and tensile breaking strength were determined from laboratory measurements. The choice of crimping tools affected the strength of the splice under tension. Thermal profiles of energized spliced cables were constructed, which showed that spliced conductor joints operated 5 to 20°C hotter than the intact cable at rated currents. Accelerated life tests of thermally aged samples of splice kit insulation and jacket materials confirmed a deficiency in the thermal rating of the insulating tape. The recommendations in this report may be utilized to revise splice kit design, splice kit approval criteria, and trailing cable loading guidelines. Characterizing the thermal operating limits of spliced trailing cables may help to minimize the associated risks from explosions, fires, personnel burns, and shock.

A program with the objective of developing a fast, accurate instrumental method of analyzing mine dust for incombustible content has been underway in the Bureau of Mines for several years. Several prototype instruments making use of a gamma-ray backscatter technique have resulted. Although extensive laboratory testing has shown that these instruments are accurate under laboratory conditions, only extensive field testing will prove their ultimate practicality and usefulness. This report shows that under most conditions these devices are at least as accurate as the volumetric method and much faster in use. Other data obtained during the same study concerning mine dust are presented; these concern moisture content, sample bulk density distribution, and some particle size distribution information.

With the increased use of mechanized equipment in mining bituminous coal, production panels are mined out rapidly. To keep current with the rapid completion of production panels, development work must be speeded up also. Although the same type of equipment usually is employed in development as in production places in the same mine, past output per man for development usually was less than from production panels. A study of development practices in 14 mines reveals a tendency toward equalization of the output per man between development and production.

The Bureau of Mines surveyed waste disposal sites at 18 metal and non-metal mines and conducted laboratory and full-scale field tests to de-termine the effects of tailings deposition techniques on physical properties of tailings pond beaches. Survey data included measurements of beach slopes, descriptions of deposition techniques, and measurements of beach physical properties taken at various distances from the point of discharge. Laboratory tests involved depositing two types of tailings, each with different grain-size distributions, into a settling trough and determining the resultant physical properties of settled materials along the length of the beach. Side confinement and the closeness of the water pool to the point of deposition caused the laboratory results to be inconclusive. Full-scale field deposition tests conducted at the tailings pond of a cooperating mine showed that there were similarities in relationships between exit velocities of tailings slurry and physical properties of the settled tailings on the beach.

In this paper, a state-of-the-art, three-dimensional, full waveform, microseismic system was used to analyze the rock failure around a deep (> 750 m (2500 ft) of cover) bump-prone longwall panel. The microseismic system consisted of both underground and surface geophones coupled through radio telemetry and a fiber-optic network to produce pseudo real-time detection and location of seismic events surrounding the coal seam. This was the first microseismic installation of this scope at a U.S. coal mine, and the system was intended to help determine the exact strata mechanics associated with the redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation at one of the U.S.’s deepest longwall mines. Overall, 5,000 calibrated seismic events were recorded during the mining of one panel, including a Richter magnitude 4.2 event which occurred inside of the array. Analysis of these events provides a number of notable insights into the rock mass behavior. For instance, the longwall panel was widened during the retreat process, and the mining-induced seismicity shows a distinctly different behavior between the start of the panel, the mining of the narrow part of the panel and the mining of the wider part of the panel. Also, in itself, the acquisition of the ML 4.2 event was a major milestone in geomechanical and bump research. This is the first time that such an event has been recorded with this detail and accuracy at a bump-prone coal mine in the U.S. The analysis of this single event has set distinct new limits on the relationship between mining seismicity and coal bumps.

The rapid growth and development of the Soviet coal industry rank the U. S. S. R. with the United States among the leading coal-producing countries. The coal resources of the Soviet Union are among the largest in the world, although coal development has been hindered by the disadvantageous location of the coal deposits with respect to the major consuming centers. Although coal production in the U. S. S. R. reached a record high, the total energy output of mineral fuels in 1957 was still far below that of the United States because a significant part of Soviet coal output was lignites or lower rank coals. Although the Soviet coal industry soon may exceed that of the United States in tons produced, the energy equivalent of Soviet output will be considerably less because of the inclusion of a high percentage of lower rank coals. Energy sources in the United States also involve large quantities of oil and natural gas, whereas coal supplies most primary energy in the Soviet Union.

"Interest in the fine structure of soots and carbon blacks is motivated by a variety of possible applications. The structure provides information on the origins of the particles and on their adsorptive and reactive properties. This paper describes a method for quantification of the structure of soots and carbon blacks based on direct electron microscopic observation followed by image analysis of these materials. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) provides a very detailed observation of particle structure. The differences in soot structure, because of its complexity, may not be easily quantifiable with the human eye; therefore, high-level computer software has been used to manipulate HRTEM images. This technique involves the application of fast Fourier transforms (FFT) to single particles and the measurement of characteristic parameters such as interplanar spacings and crystallite sizes from these particles. The methodology and application of this characterization technique are presented here. Results are shown for dif¬ferent samples obtained from soot and carbon black particles selected to illustrate the capabilities of the methodology. Quantitative information can be obtained on structural characteristics, e.g., interplanar spacing, circularity, orientation, elongation, and length distribution of lattice fringes, as well as on the fractional coverage of the extracted pattern. c 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.This paper presents a combination of techniques for recognizing and classifying different carbonaceous materials, using their structural morphology. A new method to assess and quantify the parameters which define such structures is proposed and discussed. The technique is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, cokes, chars, etc. possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure (Buseck and Bo-Jun, 1985; Buseck et al., 1987). The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic (Oberlin, 1989) or as crumpled sheets (Rouzaud et al., 1991) to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers, but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as on the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of the electron microscope in studying the morphology of such materials has been well-established, and abundant information is available (Ishiguro et al., 1991; Lahaye and Prado, 1978; Buseck, 1992).The use of HRTEM has brought further insight into this matter. Qualitative assessment of the structural order of such materials has been attempted over a long period of time in order to differentiate between various sources or treatments. There is, to date, no successful method available for quantifying the structural characteristics of various carbonaceous materials. This paper presents a technique which is able to recognize dif-ferent materials and to quantify the structural parameters of those materials using HRTEM and computational image analysis, including pattern recognition techniques.In the case of perfectly ordered graphitic crystals, electron diffraction is widely used for obtaining details on structure. Analysis of diffraction patterns can reveal parameters such as interplanar spacing, d002, crystallite size along the c-axis, Lc, crystal size in the plane of the layers, L., mean number of crystallites, Nc, etc.Complicated electron microscopy methods such as defocusing, tilted illumination, axial illumination, etc., often have to be used in order to characterize complex materials such as randomly oriented crystals in soots and carbons. This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the United Verde Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of HISTORY The United Verde concentrator was constructed in accordance with recommendations based on certain novel reasons which were quite different from those usually justifying the expenditure of such an amount. Concentrator operations started in March, 1927, although the metallurgical staff had considered for several years the eventual addition of a concentrator department.

This paper is the first part of a report giving the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-third semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will give a more detailed discussion of the whole survey. Results of the determination of copper-strip corrosion, color, sulphur content, copper-dish evaporation residue, and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method will be presented in the second paper, which will also include the prevailing retail price and the tax at the time the sample was taken. This paper deals specifically with data relative to gravity, Reid vapor pressure,5 and distillation (method 100.13).6 The samples tested were divided into "competitive-price gasolines" and "premium-price motor fuels," a method of presentation that was begun with the twenty-second semiannual survey.7 A total of 312 samples were collected from service station pumps in 20 cities throughout the United States. Of this number of samples, 207 were "competitive-price gasolines" and 105 were "premium-price motor fuels." All of the samples were collected in March, 1931, and analyzed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Miner at Bartlesville, Okla.

The energies of combustion of two carbides of tungsten and two carbides of molybdenum were measured , and the corresponding standard heats of combustion were derived . The results are as follows : WC : AH298.15 ( combustion ) = -285,940 ± 250 cal /mole , W₂ C: AH298.15 (combustion ) = -490,660 ± 400 cal /mole , Mo₂ C : AH298.15 ( combustion) = -439,350 ± 600 cal /mole , MoC : AH298.15 ( combustion ) = -269,800 ± 1,000 cal /mole . The combustion heats were combined with the heats of formation of the corresponding metal trioxides and carbon dioxide to obtain the following heats of formation : WC : AH298.15 ( formation ) = -9.6 ± 0.4 kcal /mole , WC: AH298.15 ( formation ) = -6.3 ± 0.6 kcal /mole , Mo₂ C : AH298.15 (formation) = -11.0 ± 0.7 kcal / mole , MoC : AH298.15 (formation ) = -2.4 ± 1.0 kcal /mole . The heats of combustion and formation of MoC are tentative .
