"INTRODUCTION Frequent attempts have be,made in the electrolysis of molten magnesium chloride to regenerate the electrolyte by allowing the chlorice generated at the anwdo to read with magnesium oxide and carbon within the melt according to the following reactions: (1) MgO + C + CL2 = MgCl2 + CO,(2) 2MgO + C + 2C12 = 2MgC12. + CO2.The principal advantages of such a procedure are that (1) the direct source of magnesium is magnesium oxide rather than the more expensive dehydrated magnesium chloride and (2) it is not necessary to handle or dispose of large quantities of chlorine or hydogen chloride.Grätzll 5/ proposed the use of an MgO carbon feed in a more or,less compact form in the anode compartment, of the cell. In a patent issued to Magall Aktiengecellschaft, 6/ a compact mixture of MgO and carbon is used as the anode itself. Kato 7/ and Backer 8/ add the feed in finely divided form to the surface of the anode compartment. The Bureau of Mines 2/ recently made a pilot-plant investigation of the electrolysis of suspension of MgO and carbon from chloride melts, in which it was found that although,current efficiencies of 60 to 70 percent were obtainable, the formation of sludges containing MgO, carbon, and magnesium seriously interfered with the operation of the cell,"

Fertilizers are indispensable to national preparedness and defense. Production of adequate supplies of nourishing food for sustaining life in the United States is absolutely dependent in many parts of the country on the use of artificial fertilizers of various types. Only by using fertilizers can we maintain our present volume of production without great additional expense. Otherwise we would have to increase crop areas constantly to compensate for declining yields, we would have to lower the quality of food marketed, and standards of farm living and rural civilization would decline. About 60 million of the 360 million acres of crops grown annually in the United States Vow require fertilizing each year, and between 7 and 9 million tons of commercial fertilizers are consumed annually for this purpose.

The Bureau of Mines studied the Chattanooga Shale to determine the quantity and quality of the uranium resources present and to assess specific environmental effects of mining the shale. Geologic data and chemical analyses, mainly concerning a 12-county area of Tennessee, were compiled from previous published and unpublished reports. Uranium resources in the Gassaway Member of the Chattanooga Shale in this 12-county area were estimated to be between 4.2 and 5.1 million tons, contained in 76 to 91 billion tons of shale. These figures represent inground tonnages and do not allow for mining or processing losses. Depending upon efficiency of mining and processing systems, enough uranium could be available to satisfy a large part of the cumulative domestic and world demand through the year 2000. A model was developed which assesses the total tons or acres of shale to be mined if the Gassaway Member were to satisfy 1 percent of the United States demand for uranium in 1991. This partially demonstrates the environmental impact of mining the shale and is easily factorable to any specified demand.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting re-search to determine the influence of mining machine mounted water sprays on airflows and methane concentrations at the face when blowing ventilation systems are used. Tests were conducted in a full-scale ventilation gallery. Airflow speeds and directions were measured at several locations near the face with ultrasonic anemometers. Methane was released from the face and concentrations were measured in the entry at locations above the mining machine using fixed point methanometers. Changes in airflow speed, direction, and methane concentrations were correlated with water spray operations. The test results using different spray arrangements and water pressures showed that operation of the machine-mounted sprayers can improve face ventilation effectiveness by increasing the velocity of airflow moving toward and away from the face. The improved ventilation resulted in reduced methane levels near the face.

The detonating compound cyanuric triazide was discovered*** and patented**** by Erwin Ott, and on account of his claims, the Bureau of Ordnance, U. S. Navy, desired more complete data, so an investigation was made. The results obtained were such that the Bureau of Crdnance recommended publication thereof for the benefit of the explosives industry. Some of the patent claims regarding cyanuric triazide are as follows: 1. It is not poisonous in contradistinction to fulminating mercury and lead azide. 2. In contradistinction to the hitherto employed priming agents it is fusible, and its fusion point (94°C) is so low that the product melted by a single heating in water or steam bath, can be poured without danger in the capsule shell. It solidifies therein after cooling, and shows the density of 1.5. 3. It has been determined that the cyanuric triazide, in spite of its very much higher priming actions, is much less brisent then ful- minating mercury and lead nitride. 4. The chemically pure cyanuric triazide (C3M2) constitutes colorless crystals melting at 94°0., and is not volatile. It is not affected by cold water, and only slowly saponified by hot water. It is relatively insensitive to friction and not too strong concussion, but explodes by impact or when hea ted to 170°C., or when heated suddenly. It is not more sensitive to friction and shocks then fulminating mercury. 5. The preparation of the triazide is preferably carried out by acting with an excess of sodium azide in an aqueous solution; in the cold, on cyamric chloride gradually suspended in the said solution.

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. This report describes an instrument designed by the Bureau of Mines for quantitatively identifying texture of rock surfaces produced by grinding or extremely rough surfaces beyond the range of commercial surface measuring instruments. The transducer for the instrument is a linear variable differential transformer that converts mechanical motion caused by surface roughness, waviness, and lay to an electrical output. The electrical output is recorded graphically as an X-Y plot of the line traversed on the rock surface. Details of the synthesized device and its calibration are given. The sensitivity of the unit is 2 percent of the scale setting of the amplifier. The horizontal scale is adaptable from ¼ inch to 15 inches of specimen length with a sensitivity of 0.01 inch if a 10 to 1 magnification is used and 0.1 inch if a 1 to 1 magnification is used.

"The factors that determine the efficiency of reduction of iron oxides by gaseous reducing agents may be considered in two classes; those which effect the equilibrium between the reacting substances end their products, and those which affect the rete of reaction. Both sets are of prectical importance, the former as influencing the maximum possible efficiency and the latter as determining what fraction of the maximum yield may be readily or profitably obtained. In addition, the thermal changes attending the reduction greatly affect the chance of successful industrial application of any such process, and knowledge of them is necessary for the intelligent design of apparatus and control of the reaction. Some aspects of each of these three divisions of the problem are discussed below.I. This report describes serious injuries occurring to bulldozer operators working at U.S. coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. The period covered is 1988-97. The data were collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A total of 873 injury records are examined. These injuries resulted in 18 fatalities and 31,866 lost workdays. All of these injuries occurred to dozer operators while they were doing common production tasks. An injury classification system was developed to code the narrative information that describes the circumstances surrounding the injuries. Injury records are categorized by activity (task being done), incident result (what apparently happened to the dozer), and operator impact (how the operator was injured). Where information is available, contributing factors are identified. This classification system supplemented the standard injury/illness data classification system compiled by MSHA. The results of the study indicate that, from 1993 to 1997, the number of serious injuries to dozer operators declined by 30%. The reduction in serious injuries was accompanied by a decrease in days lost due to injury. Although the number of reported injuries has decreased, dozer operators being jolted and jarred accounts for the largest percentage (70% of the incidents) and severity (75% of the workdays lost) of serious injuries while operating the equipment. Vertical jars (while backing up the dozer) resulting in injury to the operator accounted for a sizable percentage of jolting and jarring injuries. Working near an edge carries significant risk for fatal injuries. Of 116 incidents where the dozer fell over an edge, rolled over, or fell into a hidden void, 14 (12%) resulted in fatal injuries. In cases where the dozer operator either jumped or was thrown out of the cab in a fall over or rollover, 7 out of 26 were killed. Overall, 80% of the fatalities occurred while working near an edge or hidden void or on a steep slope. Further reductions in injury risk will require more widespread use of seatbelts, field and laboratory research interventions to better assess the effect of alternative engineering (e.g., seat and seat suspension) designs to dampen or isolate the effects of shock and vibration, and continued focus on hazard awareness, recognition, and response.

The Carbonate King zinc mine is on the west slope of Kokoweef Peak, Ivanpah Mountains, San Bernardino County, Calif. It has produced more-than 10,000 tons of ore with a 39-percent?zinc content since mining operations began in 1940. The ore, consisting principally of calamine and smithsonite, occurs in replacements of the YellowPine limestone. Milling, has been done from the surface to a depth of 275 feet. Eight holes, aggregating 2,121, feet were drilled by the Bureau of Mines in an endeavor to establish extensions of the worked-out ore bodies and to develop new ones. Although indication of mineralization was found in several of the holes, no new ore bodies were developed.

"The velocity of detonation of an explosive is one of its most important properties, because its performance depends markedly on the rate at which it releases its energy. Fortunately, the velocity of detonation is one of the few properties of an explosive that can be measured precisely. However, the velocity of detonation of an explosive may depend on several factors other than its chemical composition, such as density, physical state, degree of confinement, nature of confinement, and magnitude of initiating impulse. Presumably for an explosive of fixed chemical and physical properties there are certain limiting conditions of confinement and initiation under which the explosive will detonate at a maximum constant and uniform velocity. This velocity is its ""ideal"" velocity of detonation. It is obvious, however, that in order to evaluate performance properties of an explosive in all of its applications it may be necessary to measure its velocity of detonation under a number of conditions in which the velocity of detonation is far from the maximum ""ideal"" velocity.. Under certain-conditions the velocity of detonation may even,be,different at different points in the explosive.It is .relatively simple to determine the velocity of detonation of an explosive under a. standard set of conditions if one is free to use large quantities of the explosive and to form it into a convenient shape. Under these circumstances; one can use a thin column of explosive a meter or more in length. The time required for an explosion to travel the length of the column will not be less,of the order a few ten-thousandths of a second and can be readily and accurately measured .by means of the standard spark chronograph or by photographing the explosion with a rotating-drum camera. However in many applications the explosive charge may be of relatively small dimensions arid may not be in a form convenient for making velocity measurements and often may be enclosed in a case or other confining medium. It may be necessary to determine the velocity of detonation over distances of the order of a few centimeters, in which case the time intervals to be measured will be extremely small. For example, the time required for an explosion to traverse 1 centimeter of tetryl is of the order of 1.5 microseconds.Since no satisfactory method of determining time intervals of the order of magnitude of a few microseconds within an explosive charge was available,, at least not for all conditions that might be encountered in practice, it was necessary to develop a special electronic chronoscope which is capable of measuring time intervals as small as a microsecond with a fair degree of accuracy. This report describes the chronoscope and its application to measurements of velocities of detonation in explosives."

Analysis of mining equipment fires from 1990 through 1999 reveals that there were 340 large mining equipment fires, resulting in 72 injuries and five fatalities. Many of the fires resulted in the loss of equipment and all posed potential or real risks to the operator. In 97 cases, the fires raged out of control due to engine shut­off failure, even upon activation of the machine fire suppression system, due to the spraying of pressurized hydraulic flu­id and fuel onto hot engine surfaces. In other cases, even after engine shutoff, the fires re-ignited, fueled by the contin­ued flow of flammable fluids remaining in the lines onto the hot engine surfaces. In many of the fires, flammable vapors evolved and penetrated the cab, violently igniting, forcing the operator to exit under very hazardous conditions. The use of emergency evacuation lines in the fuel and hydraulic fluid systems, and methods to reduce or prevent the spraying of pressurized fluids onto hot engine surfaces would greatly improve the chances of successfully suppressing large mining equipment fires. In addition, the use of systems for preventing the ignition of flammable vapors inside the cab, and detecting and suppressing fires originat­ing in the cab, would greatly enhance operator safety. The National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted experiments on meth­ods to reduce the fire hazards associated with large mining equipment. These experiments evaluated the use of cab inerting systems to prevent the ignition of flammable vapors inside the cab and sup­press fires originating in the cab, while maintaining a breathable atmosphere for the operator to bring the equipment to a stop and safely exit the cab.

This report gives the results of an experimental study of the progressive changes that occur in particle size and size distribution when a homogeneous and isotropic mineral is subjected to crushing by impact. The mineral used in the study was uniformly sized quartz, which was crushed in a simple drop¬-weight machine that applied impact energy up to about 100 kg-cm per g. Screen analyses of the crushed products were analyzed by the method of moments to determine the mean size, variance, skewness, and kurtosis. Analysis of the data from these experiments shows that the mean size of the crushed product is a function of the energy input and the initial size. The size distribution is functionally related to the degree of size reduction. As the mean particle size is decreased, at first there is a corresponding increase in the variance and decrease in the skewness, But, as size reduction is carried further, each tends eventually to approach a steady value, and the form of the size distribution becomes stable.

This computer program determines the price per ton of coal needed to obtain a profit of 12 percent discounted cash flow. From a predetermined equipment and manning list, the program calculates all costs and prints seven tables, Including the equipment and manning tables and the discount cash flow table. Forty-four of the input variables may be readily changed to study their effects upon the final price per ton of coal or upon individual cost items. The method is adaptable for any type of mining and with additions, for beneficiation processes. This program was written in Fortran IV for use on the IBM 11302 and with few modifications can be used on other computers.

Silver consumption in the arts and industries of the United States during 1930 and 1931 has remained remarkably near the high level established in 1929. Undoubtedly the sharp drop in the price of silver has been an important factor in supporting consumption, but silver&apos;s peculiar properties and uses probably have been an even more compelling reason for its sustained utilization. In its most important use - sterling silverware - it seemingly has most serious competition, but well established tradition protects the demand for sterling ware and the law forbids the term "sterling" to be applied to any material not containing at least 92.5 per cent silver. The photographic industry is dependent upon properties of certain silver salts possessed by no other material. Consequently silver is indispensable to all photography, including the huge motion picture industry. Other uses for silver could be listed which, because of special features, likewise have tended to maintain the consumption of silver in the arts and industries of the United States. The figures which this report makes available for the first time are the detailed silver consumption figures for the arts and industries of the United States for 1930 and 1931. These figures have been tabulated with the previously published(3) figures for 1928 and 1929 thus presenting a 4-year statistical record of silver consumption. All quantities are given in troy ounces, 1,000 fine.

Ore-dressing tests were conducted on a sample of ore submitted by the Richmond Hill Mining Co. of Lead, S. Dak. as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for investigating potential domestic sources of manganese. Half of the sample was taken from the 300-foot level and half from surface cuts. The problems involved were liberation and rejection of silica and iron and removal of lead, Silver, and gold from the manganese concentrates. Although a portion of the silica and iron oxides was too intimately associated with manganese minerals for rejection by ore-dressing methods, thus limiting recovery of high-grade concentrates, the Richmond Hill ore was found amenable to simple gravity methods of concentration for producing intermediate-grade products. By jigging and tabling, 73.8 percent of the total manganese was recovered in a product that, when sintered, assayed plus 40 percent Mn. Lead, silver, and gold were successfully removed from gravity concentrates by a chloridizing roasting treatment.

"Zipf Jr., R.K. and Bieniawski; Z.T., 1989. A fundamental study of respirable dust generation in coal. Min. Sci. Technol., 9: 87-99Black lung disease in coal miners induced by the formation of fine fragments of coal imposes very high human and direct costs. A fundamental understanding of the fracture processes leading to fine-fragment formation in coal by applying principles of fracture mechanics is presented. A four-step hypothesis is proposed which sequentially describes the mechanics of fine-fragment formation during a generic coal material—coal cutting tool interaction. These steps include: (1) development of a crush zone under the tool tip, (2) macrocrack propagation. (3) shear movement along macrocracks, and (4) additional fragmentation from shear. This model contains two sources of fine fragments, namely crushing under the tool tip and shearing along the macrocrack surfaces. Three critical assumptions are made that require experimentation. First, the coal material must contain flaws of sufficient density and sufficiently small size to liberate fine fragments by crushing. The following conceptual relationships are proposed between flaw size, spacing and fragmentation: first, the active flaw size must be less than the desired particle size and second, the spacing (or density) must be in the order of the particle size. The second major assumption is that a mixed mode fracture theory will describe the initiation and crack growth direction for the microscopic inherent flaws. The third assumption is that some degree of roughness damage, and interlocking exist along the newly formed macrocrack surfaces such that a small amount of shear movement along that surface leads to additional particle formation at a microscopic scale. Preliminary analysis of the mechanical regime under a cutting tool tip places order of magnitude bounds on the stresses strains, cycle time, stress rates and strain rates. Even though the tool moves and loads the coal material with considerable speed, a quasi-static stress analysis is applicable in this region.Introduction.The generation of fine fragments (respirable dust) during various coal mining processes may lead to the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung disease). The human and direct cost of dust-induced illnesses in coal miners is very large. By several. accounts [1,2] the Federal Government paid out about $12 billion to almost 500,000 coal miners and their beneficiaries between 1970 and 1980. In addition, several states and many coal operators have established their own compensation programs at costs ranging from a few cents to several dollars per ton of coal mined [2]. Since 1980, 'the present liability of the Federal disability trust fund has approached $20 billion and the benefit payments exceed $1 billion per year. There .are also hidden costs due to dust, in the form of increased equipment wear and decreased operator productivity, both of which are due to the poor operating environment. Quantifying these costs may be difficult; however, they may be in the same range as the present pneumoconiosis costs. These high human and direct dollar costs may be prevented or reduced through long term research efforts directed at understanding the generation and control of respirable dust and the incidence of black lung disease."

"INTRODUCTION Feldspars represent one of the most abundant groups of minerals and constitute nearly Go percent of the material contained in the igneous rocks. They are grouped in a series of related aluminum silicates with varying amounts of potash, soda, and lime. .Approximately 85 percent of the feldspar produced in the United States is used as a flux in the production of glass, pottery, enamel and sanitary ware, brick, and tile. Notwithstanding the abundance of feldspar in the earth's crust, the only deposits that are worked to any extent are the pegmatites or coarsely crystalline dikes where natural segregation of the constituents facilitates recovery of the feldspar with a minimum of free quartz, mica, tourmaline, garnet, and other iron-bearing minerals that are detrimental in most ceramic industries.Although there are three glassplants and numerous other ceramic industries in Texas, all of the feldspar used in these plants is from other States. In the Llano region of central Texas, however, there are numerous coarse pegmatite dikes consisting primarily of feldspar and quartz in ratios up to 3 to 1. One of the more important of these dikes is the Badu Hill deposit in Llano County, Tex., which was first described by Carl Chelf 4/ in 1942. Following an examination of the deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, in January 1946, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by core drilling in cooperation with the Department of Ceramic Engineering, University of Texas. This report presents the results of the cooperative investigation, which was begun April 24, 1946, and completed May 17, 1946."
