Image-based fragmentation analysis is increasingly utilized in blasting operations to evaluate particle size distribution in a non-intrusive and efficient manner. However, the accuracy of optical granulometry systems can vary significantly with particle size. Higher precision is typically achieved for larger fragments, generally those greater than golf ball size when using drone-based orthomosaic analysis. In contrast, the detection and delineation of fine particles become less reliable due to constraints such as pixel resolution, particle overlap, and partial burial within the muck pile. This variability does not undermine the value of image analysis but rather highlights the need for a deeper understanding of its operational thresholds and the integration of complementary methods or calibration approaches to improve its reliability across the entire particle size distribution. Technologies such as WipFrag, originally developed in the 1980s, are designed to conduct in-situ fragmentation analysis within complex blast environments, where fines are often obscured by larger fragments. The challenge becomes more significant in blast rounds exhibiting wide gradation ranges and increased fines, particularly resulting from excessive energy concentration in high-pressure zones near the borehole. Previously, this issue was addressed through methods such as analytical correction, zoom-merge correction, and empirical calibration using Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec distribution models. However, these traditional empirical calibration approaches, particularly those tied to distribution functions like Rosin-Rammler have shown limitations, especially in accurately representing the fine region of the fragmentation curve. In contrast, the recently developed xP-fan model, which incorporates the relationship between powder factor and fragment size, introduces the fragmentation energy fan principle which Kuz-Ram model does not entail. This paper presents a study on the application of the novel xP-fan calibration to enhance the accuracy of optical granulometry systems. The findings demonstrate how xP-fan help calibrate the fine region of the PSD without deflecting the maximum size.

Blasting accurately in underground drifts and creating a smooth contour requires proper drilling, knowledge about the apparent geology, a well designed blast pattern and ideally a smooth blasting product. These products are usually cartridged explosives with less energy and are charged in the contour holes in order to reduce the energy concentration and therefore the cracking into the surrounding rock. With the development of a new contour blasting system, a device can now be delivered to the industry that that avoids the additional storage of cartridged products when bulk explosives are used. The system consists of a foldable hose that is charged with bulk emulsion, in the same way as the rest of the blast, from the base to the collar of the hole. It centers automatically in the borehole and provides a decoupled charge. The paper describes the system in detail, gives background information on smooth blasting and presents the first successful field tests using the system in the drifts of an underground mine. It shows the advantages of blast results that produce more stable contours that reduce the amount, time and cost for support but also increase safety underground.

The partnership between Orica and MMG at the Dugald River Zinc mine in Australia has led to the first global field trials and deployment of Orica’s Subtek™ 4D™ (hereafter referred to as 4D) Bulk Systems underground bulk emulsion blasting technology. This technology offers advantages over conventional bulk explosives by extending the range of energy and length of explosive column that can be charged in underground production. 4D gives blast designers energy options between Relative Bulk Strength (RBS) 50 - 150, delivered uniformly along the entire column in most blasthole conditions along with the ability to instantaneously modify the energy within an individual blasthole. During Phases 1 – 3 of the project from October 2022 to January 2023, over 57 tonnes of the 4D Underground emulsion were loaded in 17 stopes. The primary objectives of this phase were to reduce hanging wall dilution and improve stope recovery. While drilling and other parameters remained unchanged, the energy selection was tailored for specific situations, guided by a revision to the site's drill and blast standard. The design used low energy (RBS 50 - 70) in holes adjacent to the hanging wall and high energy (RBS 130 - 150) where stope recovery had historically been challenging, such as at the toes of long downholes. Initial results of the project focused on five stopes selected for their similarity to those used for the baseline data set. Although the 4D data set was small, the post-blast scans indicated favourable results for recovery and dilution. This suggests that selecting and delivering bulk explosive with tailored energy levels can improve stope performance.

The soil crater formed by detonation of an explosive charge is of considerable military interest because of the common use of explosives to create soil obstacles. The soil crater is also an important piece of forensic evidence for the investigation of terrorist bombings. With recent advances in numerical codes, modeling and simulation of explosively-formed soil craters is becoming an attractive means of analyzing this phenomenon. Consequently, the need exists to better understand the relationship between soil properties and the resultant soil crater. An extensive database has been developed for the case of explosives detonated in or above in-situ soils of various types. However, in most cases, the soil properties were either not adequately quantified or the soil materials themselves varied such that the gross properties were poorly understood. A research program is underway to improve methods of relating soil crater dimensions to soil identification properties such as USCS classification, particle-size distributions, and Atterberg limits, as well as to soil composition properties such as density, moisture content, and volumes of solids, water, and air. As part of this effort, both explosive detonations conducted over well-controlled and well-documented soil backfills and companion numerical simulations were studied. This paper presents an overview of the effort.

Placer Dome, US operates the Bald Mountain Mine. The Bald Mountain Mine is a surface operation located in remote northwestern White Pine County in east-central Nevada, approximately midway between Elko and Ely. The mine is in the Newark Valley along the southwestern flank of Bald Mountain a part of the Ruby Mountain range, at an approximate elevation of 7,500 ft (2,286 m). The geology at the Bald Mountain Mine is highly altered, both mineralogically, and structurally. Highwall stability and control have long been an issue at the operation, due largely to the varying geologic conditions. In some blasts as many as seven distinct geologic unconformities exist. These unconformities affect both final high wall integrities, as well as blast fragmentation characteristics. A 60 million ton (54.5 million tonnes) layback expansion of the existing “Top Pit” as well as development of a new satellite pit, “Sage Flats”, is being undertaken. Design final highwall pit slopes have been steepened from the traditional 47º to 55º in order to reduce overall ore-to-waste ratios, thereby improving economic viability for the expansion over the 4.5 year life of the project. With the increased usage of electronic detonators throughout the mining industry, mine operations staff, as well as representatives from the mines explosive supplier felt that an evaluation program incorporating electronic detonators would be warranted. The areas of focus for this evaluation would be resultant highwall pre-split integrities, peak particle velocity measurements (both near field and far field), frequency measurements, loader productivity, and visual interpretation of the results. The mine incorporates 25 ft (7.6 m) benches and uses separate trim blasts in conjunction with production blasts in order to reduce blast effects along final highwalls. Hole diameters in production blasts are 7? ” (200 mm). Typical production blast patterns are 18 ft x 18 ft (5.5 m x 5.5 m), drilled in a square pattern configuration. Shot sizes vary greatly, ranging from 200 holes to as many as 800. Bulk low percentage ANFO/emulsion blends are utilized as the redominant blasting agent. Blasters are usually strictly liable for injury or damage caused by flyrock (trespassory invasion) and blast-induced vibrations (non-trespassory invasion). The application of strict liability to non-trespassory invasions has resulted in significant litigation that has hampered the use of blasting and the blasting industry. Stark (2002) proposes that blasters should not be held strictly liable for non-trespassory invasions but should be liable only if their conduct is proven to be negligent. This change in legal standard was proposed because improvements in blasting technology over the last thirty years allow blasting to be conducted without substantial risk of harm to property and thus the amount of harm imposed by a blast can be related to the level of care exercised by the blaster. It is anticipated that negligence standard will reduce the amount of litigation because a plaintiff will have a greater burden to overcome. To facilitate the acceptance of negligence standard by a court of law, this paper illustrates the application of the negligence and strict tort liability frameworks using actual cases in which a decision was rendered. It is evident from these cases that some of the successful claims under the strict liability framework would not have been successful, and probably not litigated, under a negligence framework, which could result in substantial cost savings to the blasting industry and consumers.

The St. Lawrence Seaway's Welland Canal has been undergoing a rehabilitation program that requires the removal of deteriorated concrete from the 25 meter high lock walls. Multi million dollar contracts must be completed during the three month winter freeze up. New blast designs have drastically cut the time required for concrete demolition. All blast results including vibration, noise, underbreak, overbreak, scaling and flyrock have been improved and at a lower cost.

On September 7, 1994, a Burlington Northern coal train crashed into a parked train in the downtown Gillette, Wyoming rail yard. I would like to address two issues in regards to this accident. One, a slide presentation of the damage created by the accident and the resulting required clean-up and two, a simulation of "what if" had there been an explosion during the course of the crash.

This paper examines the aspects of differing types of blasting cuts in underground headings with consideration to the reduction of number of holes and costs. At least one comparison study is related where costs per advance meter were significantly improved. The technical aspect of the paper covers a study of the effects of various blasthole delay intervals on resulting crater volume, ground vibration, and fragmentation for six hole V-cuts.

Both theory and experience tell us that spatially distributed energy sources generate a more complex family of seismic waves than do point sources. The resulting effects in the near field (for close-in blasting) are significantly different than those from point sources although, at great distances from the source, the seismic waves take on many of the characteristics of point sources and can often be treated as such.

This paper discusses problems encountered when blasting under rivers for pipeline crossings. Many pipelines have recently been laid under the Danube River. Great care had to be taken to determine limits of detonation impulses from blasting operations in order that no damage would occur to structures at the water's edge, boats, and swimmers. Equations were derived from the results of this study which enable prediction of impulse levels.

To determine whether Pyrodex, a propellant, manufactured by the Hodgdon Powder Company, could be used as a substitute for high explosives for presplitting in granite and other materials. 2. To determine if Pyrodex, a slow reacting propellant which produces no stress waves in rock because it reacts subsonically, could cause the rock to crack similar to the results achieved with high explosives.

ABSTRACT : The Tournai’s region in Belgium is characterized by outcrops of limestone that were mined out long ago by different companies for cement and crushed materials. The region is densely populated and the vibrations generated by blasts in the quarries are of big concern. The occurrence of electronic detonators and development of computer sciences brought a new expectation in controlling the vibration level and, hence, carry out bigger blast operations. In this paper we present the results of two experimental blast programs that have been carried out by the Nobel explosive Belgium Company on the Gaurain-Ramecroix quarry to understand the effect of the delay on the vibrations generated in the neighborhood. The first program has been implemented during the early use of electronic caps in Belgium (1996) by performing some unit shots. An attempt to model the effect of the production blasts by the hybrid method (Hinzen 1988) gave promising but poor results compared to infield measurements. A new program (more than ten blasts) has been implemented in 2006 in which the delay and blast firing sequence (i.e. the order in firing adjacent holes in a row) have been changed; a new attempt is made to build unit signals by deconvolution and then try to model production ones. A comparison of the two approaches is made.

Flyrock is the unwanted throw of rock fragments to excessive distances in opencast blasting. The incidence is relative in nature incorporating the distance of objects of concern like structures within and outside the mine, equipment within the mine & near the blast and persons within and off the mine. Several attempts to predict and defi ne fl yrock made worldwide could not address the problem since the phenomenon is not a regular feature in blasting. This probabilistic nature of fl yrock allows for risk calculation. CIMFR, India developed a Factor of Safety based risk criterion (10, 14) for evaluation of throw/ fl yrock in opencast mines that incorporates all the above in terms of distance and allowable limit of throw – which in turn determines the risk. The criterion provides the blaster a tool for mathematical evaluation of fl yrock risk in terms of a Factor of Safety and threat ratio (defi ned for the 1st time), thereby enhancing confidence when blasting. The method is easy to use and has been applied to several mines in India and the results are signifi cant. This paper details the evolution of the concept and its application in three limestone mines of India and the results obtained. The application of the method for defi ning a fl exible danger zone is also discussed.
