INTRODUCTION In October 2014, on behalf of the French government, Ifremer, along with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), signed a contract to start a detailed exploration program for seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in the work plan located on the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR). The contract has a fifteen-year lifetime and the related exploration program must include the outline of SMS deposits and a resource assessment, as well as detailed environmental base line studies in the contract area. The exploration for SMS deposits generally includes detection of hydrothermal plume anomalies, acquisition of surface and near-bottom geophysical data, sampling operations from the research vessel (e.g. dredges, cores), and dive operations. The environmental studies include, among others, short and long-term oceanographic measurements, water column studies, biodiversity evaluation close and far from SMS deposits, characterization of natural hydrothermal plumes and related sedimentation. The HERMINE research cruise held from March 13th to April 28th 2018 (R/V Pourquoi Pas?) was the first cruise dedicated to exploration of active and inactive SMS and to the quantification of natural chemical input to the water column. The HERMINE cruise strategy was built up around three main objectives: (i) regional exploration including the detection of plume anomalies and the research of SMS deposits, (ii) local exploration of a SMS district and (iii) integrated study of a natural hydrothermal plume. This 3-in-1 cruise required us to optimize the switch between dives and surface operations. Day-time was devoted to dive operations whereas night-time was mostly dedicated to CTD/Rosette operations. The Nautile HOV (Human Occupied Vehicle) was well suited to the working time schedule of the cruise because it was time efficient in shorter (i.e. < 10h) dives due to fast descent and ascent speed, fast submerged forward speed, high maneuverability and the ability to carry heavy science payload as well as large volume of samples. Regional Exploration The first seventeen days of the HERMINE cruise were devoted to regional exploration, i.e. the detection of new plume anomalies and the research of new sulfide mineralization in the French work plan (10 000 km2; 6 clusters).

Past investigations of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) focused on actively forming sites. New technologies are needed to explore for SMS deposits which have finished their active phase and are possibly covered by sediments or lava. For this purpose the new marine transient electromagnetic (TEM) induction system MARTEMIS was developed by GEOMAR. The system was used for investigations in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Palinuro Seamount) and at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (TAG area) and proved to be suitable for operations at shallow (~600m) and great water depths (~3600m) in steep and difficult terrain. Calibration measurements in the water column demonstrate that it is possible to acquire high quality data, which is fit to be evaluated in terms of inversions. However, these calibration measurements also demonstrated that great care has to be taken in the design of such an inductive coil system, because relatively small metal structures attached to the system may lead to significant static distortions in the measured transients. The interpretation of TEM data acquired at the Palinuro Seamount show a conductive layer in the vicinity of a previously drilled, buried SMS occurrence and serve as proof of principle of the system. Results also indicate that the conductive SMS unit is indeed a confined layer with limited thickness between 3 – 5m, which was not known from previous drilling. In a similar manner, results also hint at an unknown mineralization at depth in a second area of the Palinuro Seamount. Investigations by TEM measurements were accompanied by measurements of the ambient electric field (→ self-potential) and seafloor temperatures with a heatflow probe as well as direct sampling with a gravity corer. The areal coverage of measurements and sampling allow for a greatly enhanced view of the structure.

"In July 2016 the International Seabed Authority (the “ISA”) released a first working draft of its mineral exploitation regulations as well as the standard contract terms for mineral resources in the Area, for which stakeholder input was sought in late 2016. In January of 2017 the ISA released a discussion paper on environmental matters related to these draft regulations. The ISA is now in the process of further developing its draft exploitation regulations and standard contract terms to ensure that seabed mining is carried out in an environmentally sound way for the common benefit of mankind.As the regulator of the “Area”, the ISA can draw lessons from onshore mining regulators and offshore petroleum regulators for their experiences in legislative drafting to smoothly and safely oversee project development, implementation, and closure. However, one of the unique challenges that the ISA faces in regulating private industry is its status as an international organization and not a sovereign nation, which results in a significantly different legal relationship between the regulator and the regulated. The result is that the exploitation contract is the sole legal connection between the mining proponent and the regulator for the exploitation phrase of the project.Accordingly, in the regulatory development process, the ISA must carefully consider which rights and obligations are set out in the exploitation contract versus the regulations. This decision will dictate the flexibility the ISA will have to modernize the conduct required of mining proponents in response to changing best practices in the industry, technological progress, and advances in the understanding of the marine ecosystem. As the first working draft of the exploitation regulations sets out an initial contract period of twenty years, it is crucial for the ISA to carefully consider the rights, obligations, and procedures it agrees to in the exploitation contract, as unilateral amendment will not be possible after contract execution."

Since industry is progressing into the deep sea, marine scientists have expressed their concern about environmental disturbances which will be introduced by using the deep seafloor for mining metalliferous resources or as a repository for wastes. Environmental studies have been conducted on national levels and in bilateral or multilateral cooperation in the development of manganese nodule mining, as this is generally achieved in marine research. These investigations were partly large-scale and experimental approaches aiming at the assessment of the impacts expected to occur in commercial mining. The results elaborated till today and expected to be acquired in the foreseeable future may remain limited. Reliable impact evaluation will result from monitoring a Pilot Mining Operation (PMO). The lecture will present the broad outlines of a possible program and a preliminary calculation of approximate costs for such a combined industrial test and environmental monitoring event. Although the extent of necessary efforts for the environmental risks evaluation can only be estimated rather vaguely, it will become evident that the required human, technical, logistical, and financial resources to be mobilized will exceed industrial capacities and go beyond national funds. Therefore, such assessment of environmental risks is calling for broad international cooperation. While industrial developments for mining the deep sea will be ruled by competition or probably by restricted joint ventures, environmental care ranges outside competition and falls within the interest of all parties involved. Environmental studies, unlike technologies for the same function, do not primarily need duplication. International cooperation in PMO monitoring would equally well support all mining companies or consortia, it would minimize the efforts for all engaged in this challenging venture of deep-sea mining and it would maximize the precautionary discussion on and the care for the deep-sea environment.

With the world’s growing demand for metals, seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits are now seen as a possible mineral resource that could contributes to secure metal supply for human needs. SMS deposits are characterized by high concentrations of base metals and at some place high contents of precious and rare metals. Since 1977 and the discovery of the first high temperature (HT) hydrothermal vent and its sulfide mineralization and high biodiversity, more than 300 sites are known today. If the exploration strategy for detection of active hydrothermal sites is now robust, their associated mineralization will not (and must not) constitute a potential target for deep-sea mining due to environmental concerns and technical limitations. Recent studies on SMS deposits are rather focused on extinct and buried mineralized sites characterized by a lower biomass. Several geophysical techniques to explore and detect extinct SMS (eSMS) and buried SMS (bSMS) have been developed (e.g. Kawada and Kasaya, 2017; Szitkar et al., 2017, 2014) using different approaches (e.g. regional or local scale; ship-based or using underwater vehicles) with several degrees of success or limitation. Here we present results from acoustic surveys performed on the TAG hydrothermal district during the BICOSE (2014) and LEVE-SMF (2016) cruises and direct observation provided by HOV (Nautile) dives carried out during HERMINE cruise (2017). Acoustic data were acquired using two different multibeam echosounders (MBES): the hull-mounted Kongsberg EM122 (12 kHz, R/V L’Atalante) and the ROV-mounted RESON SeaBat 7125 (400 kHz, ROV Victor) (Figure 1). After processing, acoustic seafloor backscatter data from both MBES provides complementary qualitative results in relation to the seafloor composition. The analysis of the seafloor backscatter data obtained by near-seafloor surveys with the high-resolution 400 kHz MBES shows a clear relationship between low backscatter strength values and areas covered with pelagic and hydrothermal sediments whereas high backscatter strength values are associated to pillow lavas and basaltic scree. Intermediate backscatter strength values are rather related to old and younger eSMS as well as to mineralization on TAG active mound.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today&apos;s money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn&apos;t take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country&apos;s total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950&apos;s, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960&apos;s. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin&apos;s operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980&apos;s. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? "The future of the marine mining industry is tied to the resource potential of the seafloor. Everything from economic feasibility, policy decisions and environmental impact assessments to extraction techniques and mining tool design rely on an understanding of the size, composition, and distribution of the deposits. Development and regulatory decisions must ultimately be tied to not only the grade and tonnage estimates of individual deposits or groups of deposits, but also an understanding of the uncertainty of these estimates. Here, we will discuss how seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposit grades and tonnages are evaluated, and the sources of the uncertainties associated with these values.TONNAGE UNCERTAINTYFirst-order tonnage (size) estimates for SMS deposits are primarily determined from calculating the volumes of material that occurs as positive bathymetric features on the seafloor. The extent of sulfide mineralization on the seafloor can be determined either from visual surveys (camera-tow, remotely-operated vehicle (ROV), or human-occupied submersible surveys) or from volume calculations of bathymetric features identified from digital elevation models of the seafloor, or a combination of both methods. For bathymetric models to be used to identify deposits in the absence of visual groundtruthing, data resolution of 1 m or less is generally required to confidently identify a feature as being hydrothermal in origin (as opposed to a volcanic or tectonic feature), and therefore near-bottom multibeam data acquisition (e.g., using autonomous underwater vehicle (AUVs) or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) is required (Fig. 1). Specific characteristics of bathymetric features, such as shape, slope angles and surface roughness can be used to identify features of hydrothermal origin (Fig. 1). However, so far, bathymetric features mapped at a resolution of ~1 m cannot be relied upon to unambiguously distinguish a sulfide mound, and the additional use of multiple AUVmounted sensors, such as magnetometers, which can be used to detect hydrothermal upflow zones, or self-potential sensors, which detect electrical fields related to the oxidation of sulfide minerals, can increase the confidence that a bathymetric feature is indeed a sulfide body, without the need for expensive and time-consuming visual surveys (c.f. Petersen et al., this volume)."

In this first sub-seafloor examination of an active hydrothermal system hosted by felsic volcanic rocks at a convergent plate margin, we drilled 13 holes altogether, achieving deep cored penetrations at two sites. Our aims were (1) to delineate the lateral and vertical variability in mineralisation and alteration patterns below the PACMANUS hydrothermal site near the 1650-1700 m-deep crest of Pual Ridge in the eastern Manus back-arc basin, so as to understand links between volcanological, structural and hydrothermal phenomena, and (2) to establish the nature and extent of microbial activity within the system. Technological innovations vital to success included our precise location of holes on small targets with drill-stem video, the use of a new hard-rock re-entry strategy, and deployment of casing with a new hammer drill. Other technical achievements were the first ODP application of an advanced diamond coring system, and the first direct comparison in a hardrock environment between structural images obtained by wireline methods and by logging-while-drilling (resistivity-at-bit).

Within the frame of the German-Indonesian cooperative Bandamin research project two short cruises (7 station days each) were carried out which led to the Flores-Banda basin located north of the active volcanic arc. This basin is part of a large island-arc subduction-collision system resulting from a complex plate tectonic situation in which three major plates collide with each other. The eastern part of the Sunda-Banda convergent margin also includes the transition from subduction of oceanic lithosphere to collision of the Australian continental crust with the arc. This transitional part is cut and displaced by various large obliquely striking fault systems. Thus, the south eastern and eastern arc segments represent geological conditions which are suitable for the development of hydrothermal convection and potential mineral precipitation. Our study area lies north of the transitional section between Flores and Wetar. We started with a high-resolution bathymetric mapping of 240 km2 in a region some 36 km north of the island of Lomblen. A small submarine neovolcanic ridge was discovered striking approximately NW-SE and consisting of several submarine volcanic structures. In the northwest of the study area, the active subaerial Komba Volcano (Batu Tara) marks the youngest continuation of the ridge system examined. From the ridge we collected fresh and hydrothermally altered volcanics with disseminated sulfides (pyrite, pyrrhotite, markasite, and chalcopyrite), together with ferrugenous gossans.

We report preliminary results for a group of unique samples collected with MBARI’s ROV Tiburon on August 12, 2005. The samples were collected from the East Blanco Depression (EBD) diffuse-flow hydrothermal field, which was determined in a previous study to cover an area of at least 100 m by 80 m (Hein et al., 1999). The survey reported on here extends that field to more than 1500 m in an approximately N-S direction. The EBD, a pull-apart basin, occurs near the western end of the Blanco Fracture Zone (BFZ), which connects the Juan de Fuca and Gorda Ridge spreading centers (Fig. 1). The samples were collected from a waterdepth range of 3343-3380 m.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) which contain Au, Ag, Cu, Zn, and Pb have been interested in as a target of commercial mining these 15 years. Japan has large potential of SMS and a national R&D project for the mining has been active these 5 years. However, the economy of SMS mining is very bad, because the waste tailing disposal cost is very expensive in Japan. A slurry flushing method is experimentally examined in this study for the improvement of the economy. During the flushing, because of density difference between the metal-rich ore and the waste rock, a kind of gravity separation is possible. The results suggest a possibility of the actual application.

The recovery of most minerals, which are amenable to gravity concentration, is standardly determined by accurate sampling and assaying. .With respect to particulate - gold ores, sampling and assaying are still the convention, but the accuracy and reproducibility of these operations are much discussed and debated points. Evaluation of gravity concentrators by conventional sampling and assaying techniques is very time consuming, costly and may introduce a large amount of uncertainty into the results due to the particulate nature of placer gold. These problems are not unique to placer gold ores and apply to any low grade ore with particulate values. A gravity concentrator evaluation process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (198Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator&apos;s product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems. Beginning in 1984, MIRL conducted radiotracer studies of unit processes, which included jigging, static wedge wire screening, elutriation, and concentration with compound water cyclones.

"Nine Fe-Mn nodules from the extensive nodule field in the east of Campbell Plateau of southwest Pacific Ocean beneath the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) and Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) were analyzed for the 10Be/9Be dating by AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectroscopy) at IGNS, New Zealand.Several types of nodule morphology were identified including distinctive discoidal forms with overgrowths resulting possibly from overcrowding and partial sediment burial. Five principal nodule facies were also recognized by location and occurrence (Fig. 1) (Wright et al., 2005). Fe-Mn nodules show various concentric internal growth textures, such as, cuspates, large parabolic cuspates, pseudo-columnar, columnar, globular, and laminated, which vary even in a nodule with hydrogenetic, early diagenetic, or mixed origin. Each texture shows micro-textural varieties and different mineralogy and/or chemistry. The genesis of each internal texture was indicated by the REE patterns, the mineralogy of Mnoxides, and the Mn/Fe ratios."

The survey of the cobalt-rich crust of the Republic of the Marshall Islands was carried out in 1996 and 1998, as the cooperative study project between Japan and SOPAC member countries, and at the thirteen seamounts, seafloor topographic maps and acoustic reflection intensity distribution images by MBES were obtained, and the collection of samples by dredging was conducted. On the basis of the previous results, three seamounts, MS01, MS11 and MS12 were selected for the 2002 year survey, and drilling by BMS (deep sea boring system) was conducted there, to understand the occurrence of cobalt-rich crust. At the same time, environmental survey was carried out to make clear the environmental characteristics of the area. The summary of the survey will be reported.

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. The reconstruction of ocean history has been a major focus of marine research over the past decade. A significant outcome of these investigations is the recognition that certain types of marine mineral deposits are linked to regional to global scale changes in ocean composition and climate conditions. Manganese-bearing deposits are of particular interest in this regard because changes in their occurrence, distribution and/or composition are responsive to both biochemical and geological factors. Analyses of such deposits whose formation spans critical age/epoch boundaries thus provide clues concerning the interplay of different process during anomalous periods in Earth history. Recent studies demonstrating this deposit - event - process relationship include: (1) Changes in the bulk chemical composition of ferromanganese crusts during the Late Miocene-Early-Pliocene (-7-3 Ma) that coincide with a period of enhanced biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific upwelling zone; (2) The formation of large statiform manganese deposits at the Cenornanian- Turonian Boundary (-92 Ma) in association with widespread oceanic anoxia; and (3) Increased deposition of hydrothermal precipitates caused by tectonic reorganizations at the Paleocene - Eocene boundary (-55 Ma) that resulted in global-scale changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation and climate.

In a context of scarce mineral resources, coupled with an increasing global demand in metals due to the exponential growth of newly industrialized countries, the mining industry will inevitably have to deal with tomorrow?s resources: underwater deposits. Three types of offshore deposits are known to date: polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich crusts and hydrothermal sulphides. The latter, regarding the political-economic context, is now considered most likely to be exploited in a near future. Operating a mine critically requires accurate knowledge on geotechnical properties of the ore. A question is thus to be asked: Is there a particular spatial organization of geotechnical properties in a hydrothermal sulfide mound? In the present study, geotechnical properties have been measured for 29 sulfide samples of known origin, completed by 14 measurements on Western Pacific specimens from Yamazaki et al. (1990) and Yamazaki and Park (2003). From these geotechnical data on 43 sulfide samples, we can provide some answers to this question above, crucial for future exploitation of underwater mines.

Manganese nodules, seafloor massive sulfides, and cobalt-rich manganese crusts in deep-sea areas have been considered as future metal sources (Mero, 1965; Halbach, 1982; Lenoble, 2000). Manganese nodules were the first recognized deep-sea mineral resource and many efforts concentrated on the R&D of mining systems (Welling, 1981; Herrouin et al., 1989; Yamada and Yamazaki, 1998) and assessment of environmental impacts (Burns et al., 1980; Foell et al., 1990; Yamazaki and Kajitani, 1999). No mining venture, however, has been active for this potential resource. The reason is that the rate of world economic growth has been slower than anticipated in 1960s. During the 10 year period of 1994-2003 (Fig. 1), on the other hand, there was about a 33% increase in the world copper demand. Of that increase, about 60% was consumed by China. Most of China?s increased copper demand took place over the final 4-5 years of that period. The growth is expected to continue for several years, and in 10 years or sooner the same situation is expected for India. Copper is the third metal in global demand, but its small abundance in the Earth?s crust is not well recognized (Table 1). From the production rate and the abundance, a copper shortage, or crisis, has a high probability than the other metals. Japan has no domestic copper resources and needs a counter measure for this potential coming copper shortage. Fortunately, Japan has a manganese nodule mining claim in the Clarion-Clipperton nodule field, Kuroko-type massive seafloor sulfide deposits in the Okinawa Trough and Izu-Ogasawara areas, and cobalt-rich manganese crusts around Okinotori-Shima and Marcus Islands. We need to re-evaluate their potential as copper resources and to realize their development.

The rare earth elements (REE1s; atomic number 57 -71) exhibit a coherent chemistry, are widespread in nature, and tend to occur in characteristic concentrations in different geochemical phases. Because of their predictable chemistry, the REE&apos;s-are highly useful as indicators or tracers of geochemical processes, and are often used as such in investigations of the genesis of terrestrial ore deposits. However, analogous applications of the REE&apos;s to the study of marine mineral deposits have been constrained by our limited understanding of the marine geochemical cycle of these elements. For example, a continuing area of uncertainty in this regard involves the so-called "REE Mass Balance Problem." This problem refers to the fact that detailed geochemical mass balance calculations typically predict a significant imbalance for the REE&apos;s; i.e., the calculations predict that REE removal rates from seawater are 11-18 times greater than their input rates. Yet all other chemical considerations indicate that the REE budget should be roughly in balance. Recent studies at The University of Michigan suggest the solution to this problem lies in understanding the the role of seafloor hydrothermal activity in the marine budget of the REE&apos;s. Geochemical analyses of hydrothermal sediments from two Pacific sites (East pacific Rise at 19°s and the Southern Juan de Fuca Ridge at 45°N) clearly show that the REE component of hydrothermal sediments is primarily acquired via scavenging from seawater. Iron oxyhydroxides, which form as precipitates when hydrothermal solutions are debouched onto the seafloor, are the active scavenging agent. Although the REE content of hydrothermal sediments generally increases with increasing distance from the rise crest, this increase is especially pronounced for sediments deposited below the lysocline,

In April 2010 three REMUS6000 series autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have been used to simultaneously map large areas near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (3°N) axis in water depths ranging from 1,000m to 4,000m. One vehicle was provided by the Leibniz-Institute for Marine Science, IFM-GEOMAR (Kiel, Germany) the other two were provided by the Waitt Institute for Discovery (La Jolla, USA) and managed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (USA). The REMUS6000 vehicles, manufactured by Hydroid Inc. (USA), are "cigar-shaped" vehicles (4m long and weighing approx. 900kg) and consist of a tapered forward section, a cylindrical midsection and a tapered tail section. An internal titanium strongback, which extends through much of the vehicle length, provides the structural integrity and acts as a mounting platform for syntactic foam, equipment housings, various sensors and release mechanisms. The AUVs can be used in various payload configurations such as multibeam bathymetry, electronic still camera, or subbottom profiler. For these missions the electronic still camera configurations was installed. An EDGETECH 2200M dual frequency (120/410 kHz) side scan sonar was used to map the seafloor, but other frequencies are readily available for more options in resolution and range. The 120 kHz side scan transmitter was used for most missions in order to map large areas (increased range) and to be able to fly at higher altitudes (between 70m and 90m) above the rough seabed encountered in this area. The maximum slant range was between 600m and 700m on both sides resulting in a swath width of up to 1.2 km. Line spacing ranged from nearly 1,000m in flat areas down to 400m in steep terrain. Side-scan mosaics were generated with a 1m resolution. Selected areas were targeted by the higher resolution 410 kHz transmitter as well as by bottom photographs flying as low as a few meters above the seabed. The vehicles navigated autonomously using a combination of inertial navigation (Kearfott T-24 or T-16 INS) and long baseline acoustic navigation by computing their range to two moored acoustic transponders. Working efficiently in this rough topography at speeds above 3 knots was only possible due to the obstacle avoidance capabilities of these AUVs.
