Drilled displacement (DD) piles often develop significantly larger unit shaft resistance values than other drilled or augered pile systems in coarse grained materials. Minimal vibration and limited spoil development are also associated with DD pile installation and these factors are frequently additional financial and/or environmental benefits of the system. The application of DD piles in North America dates to the mid-1990s and their use in the Midwestern United States has been significant, particularly in the past 10 years. The authors have collected an extensive database of DD pile performance in the United States. The alluvial and glacial deposits of the Midwestern U.S. provide conditions where drilled displacement piles perform very efficiently when compared to coastal and residual geologies. This paper presents a summary of the authors? experience regarding installation and performance of DD piles in the Midwestern U.S. Information presented includes summary presentations of DD performance across a range of site conditions as well as a discussion of the relationship of DD performance and installation effort in the Midwest as compared to other geologic settings in the U.S.

Recently, large diameter drilled shafts are often used for foundations of large-scale marine bridges with high capacity and required to resist lateral loads. Steel casings are essential in supporting the hole-diving concrete installation of the drill shafts constructed in the sea. The casings, however, are usually not considered as the structural elements and their load bearing capacity is often overlooked in the design of drilled shafts. As the diameter of drilled shafts becomes larger, there are higher demands for more efficient and economical design of large-scaled drill shafts in the sea. Steel-concrete composite columns are popular for the superstructure of bridges, and the outer steel attached to the shaft increases the shaft resistance through confining the concrete. In this study, the lateral resistance of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts was evaluated quantitatively based on the numerical analysis. When steel casings are used as structural elements such as the composite columns. Ultimate lateral bearing capacity of composite drilled shafts with various diameters was numerically calculated through the 3D finite element analysis. For that, elasto-plastic model with the perfect plasticity is involved to capture the ultimate load. A commercial FEA program, MIDAS-GTS, is used in this study. Real field conditions of the west coast, Korea were examined to set up the ground conditions and pile lengths required for this parametric studies. Detailed characteristics of the stress and displacement distributions are evaluated for the better understanding on the mechanisms of the composite shaft behavior.

A large scale piling work is undertaken in India for an important fast track industrial project. Thousands of solid square precast concrete piles are driven to depths of around 50m. Soils encountered are of alluvial origin with very soft clays varying in thickness from 10 to 18m at the top followed by medium dense to dense and occasionally very dense sand, stiff clay and finally dense to very dense sand layer as the founding layer. Recent site grading with around 4 metres thick hydraulically filled river sand necessitated driving the piles to the bottom sand layer to avoid problems on account of negative skin friction and to achieve optimum pile capacity. A process approach suggested by Bell et al (2002) to promote better understanding of the pile behaviour, pile capacity, and parameters assumed at design stage for static capacity and for wave equation analysis is followed with an aim to bring in effective economy in terms of pile length and pile installation speed. Soil investigation work is also undertaken in stages to cut down pile wastage. A judicious combination of PDA and static pile load tests is followed. Pile Driving Analyser (PDA) tests at end of driving and also at various stages of recovery of pile capacity are carried out to understand the pore pressure dissipation phenomenon. The paper attempts to present some of the valuable experiences that would go to establish precast pile as a very effective alternative to driven cast-in-situ piles and bored piles which are very common in this part of the world despite their limitations in terms of economy, speed and certain geotechnical aspects.

A proposed rehabilitation of a 200,000 sf, 75-foot high steel-frame building at the former U.S. Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York required the review of existing foundation data and an investigation of the foundations with respect to their condition. The building was constructed in stages between 1856 and 1933, including several expansions and interior equipment with isolated foundations. The building has clear spans on the order of 50 feet and at one time supported cranes allowing transport of heavy equipment through the building. The proposed rehabilitation is to include a food manufacturing center and office space having multiple stories. Original construction drawings, available from the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation?s drawing archive, were reviewed to determine the foundation system supporting the structure. The original drawings provide a window into the methods utilized during late 19th and early 20th century pile foundation construction. The review revealed that the building is supported by pile foundations ranging from timber to concrete-filled steel pipe (depending on the year of construction). Annotations including pile driving records were available on some drawings indicating the design and as-built capacity (using the ENR formula for driving resistance). An investigation consisting of test borings was performed to identify the subsurface conditions underlying the building for evaluating theoretical capacity of the piles. A test pit investigation was performed against existing columns within the structure to expose the piles and pile caps for inspection pertaining to pile condition. The test pit investigation revealed methods utilized during original construction to integrate new columns with existing floor slabs, the use of below-grade brick arches to support a floor slab, and the condition of timber piles which were likely installed up to 120 years ago. The observations made within the test pits were compared with original drawings to evaluate the accuracy of these drawings.

"Micropiles are small diameter cast insitu reinforced grouted piles and it has been effectively used in many applications of ground improvement. It increases the load carrying capacity of soil and reduces the settlement. It is also used in strengthening existing foundations. In this study, the effect of Solid and Hollow micropiles on the load carrying capacity of footing resting on sand is studied. The effects of solid Micropiles are investigated by conducting experimental model studies. The parameters involved in this study include the position of pile, pile length and pile spacing. Load test was carried out on a model footing resting on sand with solid and hollow micropiles. Load test trail is repeated for footing on Micropiles with varying lengths of 10, 20, and 30 times the diameter and spacing equal to 5, 4, 3, 2 times the diameter. The load-settlement behavior of each case is compared. Optimum length and optimum spacing of both the solid micropile and hollow micropile are determined. It is also observed that the effect of micropiles in the peripheral of footing resists lateral displacement of soil underneath the footing. The micropile beyond significant depth becomes redundant.INTRODUCTIONA micropile is a small diameter (less than 300 mm) drilled and grouted pile that is typically reinforced - FHWA-NHI 2005 (Federal Highway Administration-National Highway Institution). It is constructed by drilling a borehole, placing a steel reinforcing element into the borehole and grouting it. Hollow micropiles are typically reinforced by solid central bar that occupies about onethird of the hole volume. The grout is placed by gravity, under pressure methods or by a combination of both (post grouting). Thus, micropiles can be considered as small drilled-shafts that are specially drilled and grouted.Historically, micropiles have been introduced in Italy as a foundation system mainly for retrofitting and underpinning of structures that had sustained damage during World War II and access for conventional piling equipment was not possible (Bruce, 1988). The second generation of micropiles is a pressure grouted piles with a central mono all thread bar (with diameter up to 89 mm). They are installed by using either an open or cased hole drilling method.A new generation of micropiles, termed Grout injection bore micropiles (IBOR), was developed in the 1980s. The IBOR, currently named hollow bar micropiles, utilizes a continuous all-threaded hollow steel bar as the drilling and grouting conduit, which allows drilling and grouting simultaneously without the need of a casing during drilling. A sacrificial (lost) bit with openings that allow for pressure grouting of the hole is threaded onto the end of the hollow bar and is left in place following drilling. A drilling fluid (air, water, or grout) is introduced through the hollow bar and allows the spoils to flush from the borehole opening. Upon reaching the required depth, neat cement grout is then injected under high pressure into the drilled hole to fill the annulus between the bar and the soil from the bottom to the top. Due to the grouting method employed, the shape of the hollow bar micropile is expected to have a bulb shape with an enlarged base."

In this paper conventional construction procedure is briefly described for the installation of stone columns in soft ground in China. A viewpoint concerning the mechanism of ground improvement by use of stone columns is presented for discussion. Based on the information obtained from field measurement and observation three important problems relating to the construction and design of stone columns are discussed. Finally, a case history is given to show that short stone columns floating within the weak soil layers may in some instance be used to improve the weak strata of great thickness.

The design and construction of drilled piers through water bearing and caving soil conditions are discussed. The need for close cooperation between the design engineer and contractor in both the design and construction stage is outlined. Four case histories illustrating the design and construction considerations for four different problem soil and ground water profiles are presented, including the field testing and observation procedures that were utilized to confirm that the design inten. was accomplished. Requirements advisable when placing concrete under water in a cased environment and when placing concrete under slurry in an uncased environment are described.

In Japan, earthquakes are experienced frequently. Many buildings and structures in Japan are supported on pile foundations. The pile foundation is a kind of advanced foundations in the filled or soft soil. In this paper, through the actural engineering of coal dressing plant of Western Opencast Coal in Fushun built on the mining dump with large diameter pile foundation, the construction method and mechanics analysis of pile are given. Unless it is in following stadge, the stability of pile cannot be lost due to its small rigidity. The analysis shows that pile foundations of large diameter ellipse section can decreased hotizontal displacement to 60% ?70% of that of equal section an in the design of a single pile and a single column, the ellipse pile and manual dig hole are most favourable. So a large amount of concrete can be saved.

Responses range from the sand at a playground to the mud that sticks to the bottom of your shoe, the dark loam found in gardens to the firm earth under your feet. But do you know where the term soil originated? Or how it was intended to be used? This article looks at how word choice can lead to very different motivations for owners, designers and constructors.

The analysis of Combined Pile Raft Foundation (CPRF) is very complex due to involved interactions among components of CPRF system. Many researchers made efforts to develop sufficient methods including three dimensional finite element methods to compute these interactions. Since there are some restrictions and complexity in previous methods, in present study a new approach based on three dimensional finite difference methods is implemented to overcome some of these restrictions. The total and differential settlements of a centrifuge case study are computed using different numerical methods to show the performance of present numerical approach.

Twelve toe grouted, and eleven ungrouted piles, founded in very dense sands have been analysed to establish how toe grouting enhances pile performance. It is shown that pile stiffness is greatly increased, and that pile bases work effectively. This is in contrast to ungrouted piles, where some milli­meters of base movement may be required before the base is mobilised. Grouting appears to recover most of the disturbance caused during construc­tion, but in general does not enhance the ultimate bearing capacity of undisturbed ground.

The original Cistercian Lure abbey situated in eastern France and built in the second half of the 16th century, has become nowadays an administrative building. Because it has been founded on poor ground conditions and inadequate foundation scheme, the abbey has suffered severe structural distortion. In 1992 an inspection revealed new extensive damages which led to a general refection together with a foundation underpinning. Micropiling was the selected method. Movements recorded over a period of 6 years after underpinning completion are presented.

The wireline sampling originates from core drilling in rocks. The authors combined the wireline sampling technique with conventional undisturbed soil samplers, including Osterberg sampler, Denison sampler and double tube barrel, and then developed the wireline samplers of WPS, WSS and WSR models. These samplers are able to sample various soils. They reserve all the advantages of the original samplers, and moreover, they are noted with quick hoisting and lowering by wire rope. Therefore, it becomes an efficient new technique of sampling undisturbed soil from deep foundation.

This paper summarizes seven years of Italian ex­perience with the use of large calibration chambers for the calibration, under closely controlled stress and strain conditions, of some in situ testing devices which are used in sand deposits. At the present time two calibration chambers are operating in Italy, one at E.N.E.L.-C.R.I.S. (Milan) (*) and the other at I.S.M.E.S. (Berga­mo) (**). Both chambers can accomodate cylindrical samples 1.2 m in diameter and 1.5 m in height. A detailed description of these chambers can be found in Bellotti, et. al (1982).

Deep Mixing Series: This article is the second keynote highlighted from DFI's virtual Deep Mixing Conference in 2021, for which Topolnicki served as a committeee co-chair Polish applications of deep soil mixing (DSM) technology occupy a leading position in Europe. That includes use for road and railway embankments, bridges, residential and industrial build- ings, silos, commercial centers, slabs, car parks and storage yards, excavation supports and cut-off walls. In fact, more than 350 road and railway viaducts and 200 wind turbines have been founded nationally on DSM columns, which are firsts on an international scale. This represents more than 1,200 imple- mentations by the Polish geotechnical industry. Considering the need to update DSM design recommendations, this article will attempt to summarize the best practices of wet DSM design and implementation, in particular. It draws on 20 years of experience and will high- light the properties and principles of the design of stabilized soil and lessons learned. Case studies are included to fur- ther understanding of the careful con- siderations needed with this technology.

Auger piling system which was developed in the United States in the 1940's is gaining acceptance in many parts of the world. Although primarily used to support foundations, the system is very useful for many other applications such as soil anchors, temporary and permanent earth retention systems, restricted headroom piling and underpinning of existing foundations. Pile load tests are regularly used to verify pile capacities. Sometimes, they are used to optimize pile designs. This paper presents a case study based on a real project, in which the information obtained from load tests during construction was used to shorten the design pile lengths without a formal decision analysis. In this study, a simple probabilistic model was used to assess the probabilities of failure based on design information. The Bayesian approach was used to update the probabilities given the additional information from load tests. These probabilities were then used in a formal decision analysis to determine the optimal pile lengths based on design information and based on the additional information from load tests. The optimal pile lengths are different from those implemented in the project without a formal decision analysis. The value of the formal decision analysis is illustrated by its ability to optimize the pile length in a transparent and defendable way.

A Real Time Automated Remote Reading Electrolytic Tilt Monitoring System was effectively deployed for monitoring an existing five story brick building during underpinning, shoring and excavation operations for a directly adjacent thirty-foot deep excavation. The monitoring system was comprised of four sets of uniaxial electrolytic tilt meters connected to a Campbell datalogger with multiplexer, cellular modem and solar power. The excavation was for the foundation and underground parking as part of a new 55 story tower complex. Challenges to the contractors and to our monitoring personnel which were addressed included a tight urban site contemplating property line to property line new construction with directly adjacent old existing buildings, buried concrete foundations from former site use, cohesionless pervious sandy soils and high groundwater. Highly variable and diurnal ambient temperature regimes due to adjacent building shadows required careful corroboration and application of temperature corrections to the raw data. Earth tides were suspected on a very small scale and investigated by correlation between the data and the local sinusoidal tidal ephemera. Incidental inadvertent contractor interference with the instruments during underpinning due to site constraints was readily detected.
