"The natural and man-made realities on either side of the Atlantic are different. Therefore, a large part of the other side' s knowledge and experience cannot be transferred easily. In the following, the author will attempt to describe some of those developments in the German hard coal industry which may be of particular interest to readers on this side of the Atlantic.The area of the Federal Republic is quite small, especially if compared with a country as large as Canada. On a territory the size of the maritime provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Germany holds coal reserves roughly corresponding to the total Canadian reserves. More than 20 billion tons of hard coal down to a depth of 1500 m, and more than 30 billion ton s of brown coal of lignite are technically and economically extractable acording to current technology.However, not only are Germany's coal resources more concentrated; the country is also densely populated, and there are dense networks of railroads and highways All components of the so-called infra-structure are available everywhere, be it electricity, any machinery or personnel. Public opinion is likely in favour of an increased utilization of coal.The coal industry is well developed through a long evolution covering centuries. As a consequence, there is an effective and intensive cooperation of numerous bodies and institutions concerned with coal mining, from government agencies including the inspectorate to suppliers, trade union s, producing companies, to jointly operated management and research organizations. In the Federal Republic, hard coal is mined in deep mines only, and lignite in general, only from open-cast pits. There is a complete organizational and geographic separation of hard and brown coal in Germany. Because the Federal Republic holds only insignificant mineral oil and very little natural gas deposits, coal is essentially the only and consequently the most valuable source of energy."

"The ProblemMany science activities receive substantial funding from governments without much direct economic benefit accruing to state or individuals. In contrast, the search for knowledge has never been an acceptable so le justification of geoscience activity, perhaps because of its utility right from its inception. William Smith's geological activities were embraced because of their usefulness in building canals. Utility has been expected ever since.For decades it has been accepted at senior level s of government, without much understanding of the process, that geological surveys are necessary as a basis of resource evaluation and utilization. Recently, government treasury board s, staffed with economist s, have questioned these near axioms and in many cases the budget s of geological surveys have reflected their stone y-eyed appraisal s. Are government surveys necessary? Can their functions be reduced? Can some or all of their functions be privatized?Government geologists have been muted in trumpeting their successes outside their own ranks. Companies have been reluctant to give specific public feedback on the work of government surveys that have truly aided or guided them toward discovery. Lack of acknowledged linkages between survey work and discovery has dogged survey managers in budget reviews. Impoverished surveys cannot perform adequately so the circle is completed and the doubters' prophecy fulfilled. This is the genera l problem; British Columbia is the archetypical province."

"The rates. J. at which materials emit radon are of interest in studies of the sources of radon in mines. buildings. soils overburden and other places where it may indicate the location of ore or be a health hazard. Here J values were determined by measuring the radon concentrations by means of scintillation counters or alpha-particle track detectors in chambers in which specimens were sealed. Errors in the measurements due to leakage from the chambers. lack of secular equilibrium in the decay series of the radon measured, or the limited rate of diffusion of radon from powders or within the chambers were shown to be insignificant or could be corrected. Scintillation counter measurements are highly reproducible; track detector measurements also appear useable and may be made on many small samples using small, simple chambers. J measurements were made for uranium ores, drill cores, standard CANMET pulps. concrete and gypsum board. Powdering of ores had little effect on their J values.IntroductionIn the mining and mineral sciences, radon (222Rn) is of interest chiefly for two reasons: in geochemical exploration for mineral deposits its presence in soil. overburden and water in more than background concentrations may indicate the existence and locations of uranium deposits and, if present in sufficient concentrations, it is a possible health hazard in mines, mills and other places where people live and work. The latter aspect of radon's role has received considerable attention recently(1,2,3,4,5), and surveys of soil-gas radon concentrations have been used for some time in searches for uranium deposits(6,7,8,9,)."

Several occurrences of disseminated galena, including a former producing mine, are found in Pennsylvanian fluviatile sandstone of the Salmon River Basin, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Detailed study of the distribution of these occurrences has revealed that highest galena concentrations are found in sandstone overlying channel-shaped depressions in felsic basement rocks. These buried depressions, in turn, correlate in position with modern streams in areas of basement exposure. This correspondence suggests that the latter are at least partially controlled by an exhumed Pennsylvanian topography. If this is correct, then several other streams in the area, lying on basement, may be used to locate possible undiscovered lead deposits in sandstones of the Salmon River Basin.

"The construction of large. high-power electric furnaces has been an important factor in the growth of electric smelting technology . New developments in the design and operation of electric furnaces have been spurred by the escalating cost of electric power and increasingly stringent environmental constraints. Key areasofprogress include the application of high voltage to enhance furnace productivity; the installation of novel furnace cooling elements and robust binding systems to extend furnace life; development of process schemes to reduce power consumption by preheating and prereduction of the charge; and environmental control improvements for handling fine dusty feedstocks, and for furnace sealing.This paper reviews these developments and outlines a systematic approach for their application in the custom design of new or retrofit electric furnace facilities.IntroductionThe use of electric smelting furnaces has continued to progress during the last decade. Electric furnaces offer high throughput capacity and productivity. In addition, they produce minimum environmental impact, as the furnaces can be readily sealed, and only a small quantity of off-gas is generated. Electric furnaces present the most favourable choice of smelting technology where high process temperatures in excess of about l400°C are required.Their application is burdened by the escalating cost of electric power, hence it is important to seek new opportunities through further technological development. With this in mind, the auth or will present a comprehensive summary of field experience, as well as conclusions. In presenting this overview, it is the intent to stimulate further interest as well as provide a framework from which further in-depth investigation can be initiated.Topics which will be covered include rope cores, lubrication practices, loop dividers, rope failures, etc.IntroductionThe first friction hoist was designed in Belgium in J862 by Lemielle. However, it was not until 1877 when Carl Frederich Koepe installed a friction winder sheave at the Hanover Colliery in Germany, that the design was given serious consideration. The winder consisted of a motor-powered sheave over which a single rope was installed, and the end s attached to two conveyance s. Beneath the conveyances a rope was connected, designed to reduce the chance of slip. This was the first balance rope.This earl y mod el is a far cry from the modern tower or ground mounted Koepe winders employed throughout the mining industry today. There have been vast improvements in all aspects of the Koepe winders. One such improvement is in the balance ropes used. This particular area will be concentrated on, with emphasis on selection, maintenance and field experience.SelectionThe sale purpose o f a balance rope is to counter the head rope weight. Obviously then, in selection o f balance ropes, weight is of primary concern. Usually the head and balance ropes are equal in weight. However, sometimes balance ropes which are 5 to 10070 heavier than the head ropes are employed. These reduce horsepower demands during peak acceleration periods, and assist in overcoming inertia during retardation periods. As well, it is sometimes preferred to reduce the balance rope weight, in order to compensate for the eventual weight buildup of lubricant, dirt and debris."

"Mine hoist brakes must meet the following statutory performance criteria:- There should be two independent braking systems; at least one should act directly on the hoist drum.-If one brake fail s, the others should be able to retard and stop the hoist safely before the descending conveyance, carrying the rated load, reaches any obstruction.- When all brakes apply, decelerations should not be so violent that men travelling in the conveyance are injured.- The brakes shall not overheat and fade during an emergency stop.This paper discusses design principles and capacities of caliper and disc type brakes, when applied to double drum and friction hoists of equivalent capacity.IntroductionThis paper is about the brakes that are used on mine hoists; their functions, especially in emergencies, typical design, and how they are operated, controlled, tested, and adjusted.There are two basic types of mine hoists:1. Drum hoists, where the ropes are attached to, and coil on drums. The simplest system has only one drum. Most such hoists, however, have two drums, attached to a common shaft. Ropes are wound on each drum in opposite directions, so that when one conveyance is being raised, the other is lowered. The conveynaces may travel in vertical or inclined shafts. In the latter case, the hoist s are referred to as slope hoists.2. Friction hoist s, where the headropes are not attached to the wheel, but are in contact with it for an angle of lap of, typically, between 180 and 195 degree s. Forces are transmitted from the hoist wheel to the head ropes by friction.The lower ends of the conveyances are connected to balance ropes , approximately the same weight per foot as the headropes."

"Paramount to sound aggregate resource management is an awareness of what resources exist. For the past six years, New Brunswick has been conducting granular aggregate resource inventories in and around urban centres as a means of documenting, both qualitatively and quantitatively, these resources.These aggregate studies require extensive ground truthing due to the often small nature of the surficial feature s as well as extensive foliage. Approximately 35% of the province's land mass has been mapped at a 1:50,000 scale as part of this on-going program. Reports are published annually and include data on size analysis, lithology soundness, abrasion and absorption.Aggregate deposits in New Brunswick frequently reflect the local bedrock lithology and, whereas much of New Brunswick is underlain by soft, friable sandstone of Pennsylvanian age, it is necessary to transport aggregate for higher-specification use considerable distances. Alternatively, the construction industry must turn to crushed stone as a source of asphaltic or concrete aggregate.Over 40% of New Brunswick's land mass is owned by the Crown, and aggregate resources are managed under the Quarriable Substances Act. Under this legislation, permit applications are reviewed by a Land Management Advisory Committee which consists of representatives from the various government departments involved.IntroductionSurficial materials either directly or indirectly form the basis of much of our economic activity, whether it is the field of agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, construction or other. "The main components of a ""PC” -based mineral inventory system are described in a sequence common to many real reserve/ resource estimation projects and in the practical context of problems and decision-making typically encountered in such studies. Some components are designed particuarly to improve the geostatistical instructional capability of the package. An important part of this approach involves the use of widely available software for data manipulation and evaluation in the design of a mineral inventory study progressing to mine design and feasibility. A variety of more or- less fixed routines written in high level languages provide acceptable computational speeds on a personal computer. These critical segments are linked by simple, short, compiled Basic programs easily adjustable to various data configurations and needs. IntroductionGeostatistical mineral inventory estimation has progressed greatly since its slow dissemination during the 1960s. The mining industry generally has accepted the benefits of the technique, notably the quantification of grade and geology, an indication of error in grade estimation, and of the mined volume / grade variance relationship (Clark, 1979, Isaacs and Srivastava, 1989).Acceptance has been slowed, first by complexities of geostatistical theory and second by a bewildering variety of computer systems and applications programs. Continuing improvements in education will facilitate a better understanding of the underlying theory.The purpose of this paper is to describe, in a practical context, the development of a geostatistical-based approach to reserve/resource estimation. The approach integrates various existing commercial software packages with a wide selection of programs developed by the authors for personal computers which estimate mineral inventories and educate users in the techniques applied; that is, the QMIN system.It is hoped that the approach presented here will convince mining and geological engineers concerned with resource estimation, of the soundness of geostatistical methods and its broad potential to their problems."

"All optimum pit design studies start from the geological are reserves inventory, the estimated grades of all blocks of potential are within the interpreted limits of the deposit. The actual optimization procedure is then carried out on block valuations based on these estimated grades. Thus, the relevance of any pit design can be seen to depend directly on the ore reserve estimation . To insure a proper pit design, a first step would be to use a geostatistical reserve estimation technique such as kriging, however, this is not enough. A frequently neglected fact is that the blocks of ore estimated during the planning stage of the mine are usually considerably larger than those on which the ore-waste selection will be made at the time of mining. Experience in the exploitation of large low-grade deposits has shown that large blocks, estimated to be are, when mined selectively in smaller blocks, often yield significant amounts of waste material. This phenomenon, known as internal waste, is a function of the variability of the grades, the size of mining unit and the amount of sampling information on which ore-waste decisions are made.In this study, it was proposed to consider the effect of internal waste caused by selective mining, on. pit design, using geostatistical methods to predict the tonnage and grade of recoverable reserves within large blocks.Optimum pits obtained using a block valuation formula taking into account the recoverable reserves within large blocks were compared with optimum pits obtained using a conventional block valuation formula. It was found that the optimum pits obtained by the proposed method had the highest total valuations and thus were, in fact, ""more optimum”. These pits were characterized by greater are tonnages at a lower average grade, the additional ore more than compensating for the drop in grade. It was also found that the consideration of internal waste in pit design could considerably alter pit limits in marginal areas of the deposit.It was concluded that selective mining had a significant, potentially critical, impact on the design of optimum pits especially in the case of large low-grade deposits."

"Dome Mine's No.8 shaft is located about 1 km northeast of Dome's No.3 shaft and mill complex in South Porcupine, Ontario.No.8 shaft was brought into production in 1984 to hoist ore and waste for the complete mine as well as to service the mine from the 1600 level and below. Access above 1600 level is provided by No. 3 shaft.The rectangular shaft has six compartments consisting of two skips, a cage, counterweight, manway, and a service compartment. The over-all size of the shaft is 14 ft 7 in. by 20 ft by 7 in. (Fig. 1). A 7th compartment for shaft deepening is incorporated in the bottom 500 ft of shaft. The shaft is 5470 ft deep. The loading pocket is located at 5300 ft and the dump 61 ft below the collar.Surface facilities consist of a concrete headframe and a structural steel hoistroom which houses the cage and production hoists . The service hoist is a 12-ft diameter double drum, with one 1750 HP DC motor, and the production hoist is a 15-ft diameter double drum with twin 1750 HP DC motors.Both hoists have a single clutch and a single reduction gear train built by Orenstein & Koppel, and equipped with Canadian General Electric drives. The cage hoist is equipped with a disc pinion brake.The skips were originally aluminum 14-ton capacity, Rolla-chute design with steel liners on three sides and 4 in. of rubber on the back, to absorb the loading impact. The original guide rollers consisted of fixed 10 in. pneumatic tires. The face-to-face units were eventually replaced with larger airplane-type tires mounted on a spring loaded pivot arm."

"Canada has a special place in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy because it is the only country in the western world that is a significant producer of all the major non-ferrous metals; aluminum, copper, lead, magnesium, nickel and zinc. This large non-ferrous pyrometallurgy industry has developed because of Canada's abundant mineral wealth and energy resources. Table I summarizes the number of primary non-ferrous production facilities in Canada and their share of western world production.Production of non-ferrous metals is a mature, capital intensive business and its basic processes have been in use for many years. Nevertheless, these processes have continued to evolve in response to changing needs and external pressures; such as the energy crisis of the early seventies; historically low metal prices in the early eighties and the continuing pressure to reduce plant emissions and improve in-plant working conditions. Canada's major metallurgical companies: Alcan, Cominco, Falconbridge, Inco and Noranda have played a leading role in pioneering new process technology and continue to meet the difficult challenge of keeping their operations competitive in the global metals market. This paper will try to give an overview of the major developments in non-ferrous pyrometallurgy, largely from the Noranda and Canadian perspectives, highlighting the current status of process technology and possible future directions.AluminumCanada has the world's second largest aluminum smelting industry and its capacity has expanded rapidly in recent years with the completion of several large projects in Quebec. The location and capacity of the Canadian aluminum smelters are given in Table 2. All these plants use the Hall-Heroult process, that was invented over a century ago but over the last twenty years considerable improvements have been made to increase productivity, reduce power requirements and emissions.The developments in aluminum cell technology can be illustrated by the experience at Noranda Aluminum. In 1971, Noranda Aluminum started its first pot line using Kaiser's P69 prebake cell, which was considered, at that time, the best available technology. The P69 cell was designed primarily for high productivity, operating at 150 000 amps and high current density to produce just over tonne Al per cell-day. The P69 cell is a simple design, typically operating at about 88070 current efficiency and 15 800 kWh/tonne Al. When Noranda Aluminum decided to expand in 1980, the Alcoa 697 cell was selected as it then represented the most proven, stateof- the-art technology. This cell is similar to that installed at Alcan's new Grande Baie and Laterriere smelters and is designed to operate at 180000 amps and 93070 current efficiency, producing about 25070 more aluminum per pot-day than the P69 cell using about 15070 less power. The 697 cell has a much more sophisticated cell design, with very good balancing of the magnetic field giving a flat metal pad and allowing efficient operation at the higher amperage. Alumina is fed via point feeders that provide an almost continuous feed allowing close control of the alumina level in the bath and the use of low-ratio bath composition, giving much higher current efficiencies."

"This paper is a brief overview of the role of oxygen in cyanide leaching of gold feeds (e.g. ore, concentrate). As the majority of gold occurs in the elemental state (Au °), its oxidation is of vital importance for dissolution in the cyanide lixiviant. The cyanidetion at high pH is favourable for the oxidation of Au° with a mild oxidant such as air or oxygen. Beside oxidation of gold, deleterious effects of soluble sulphides, arsenates, antimonates on cyanidation of gold can be alleviated by preaerating the leach slurry with air or oxygen (i.e. preaeration process).If gold is refractory due to its occlusion in sulphides, silicates, tellurides, etc. then gold liberation is possible by roasting in the presence of oxygen or by leaching under oxygen pressure. The data in the recent literature indicate that reactive oxygen supplied by H202, Na202, Ca02 or 03 during cyanidation can accelerate considerably gold oxidation-cyanidation and yield high gold recovery in much shorter leach time. The information compiled in this review leads to the conclusion that oxygen plays a vital role in the dissolution of gold in cyanide lixiviant."

"The Brunswick Mining concentrator processes 10,000 D.S. T. per day of a complex sulphide ore. Four separate concentrates- zinc, lead, copper and bulk-are produced by selective flotation. Several major changes have been made to the Brunswick flotation circuit to improve the process and control. This paper will describe the present flotation practices at the Brunswick Concentrator. Special emphasis is given to the conversion of two of the primary circuits to an SO2-aeration flowsheet, and to the addition of a new secondary zinc flotation circuit that produces a zinc concentrate from the plant tailings. IntroductionBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation operates a zinclead- copper and silver mine and concentrator near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Since the start-up of operations in 1964, the flotation flowsheet has undergone major modifications to process the increased tonnages and to produce a greater number of concentrates. The flowsheet for the concentrator as it was in 1971 has been described by Neumann and Schnarru) and by Ersklneco. Since then, in 1971, the No.6 concentrator was converted from bulk flotation to selective flotation to produce a copper, lead and zinc concentrate. A separate zinc upgrading circuit was installed in 1972 and a bulk flotation or dezincing circuit, which reduced the zinc in the lead concentrate, was started in 1973. In 1976, the secondary zinc circuit was initiated.In addition to these new circuits, changes have been made to the existing circuits to simplify their operation."

"Under high pressure in a deep potash mine, the salt rock behaves in accordance with the concept of a generalized, perfectly plastic substance. The paper presents the evidence of this behaviour and engineering concepts f or room-and-pillar design. IntroductionThe mining and refining facilities at International Minerals &. Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited are located near Esterhaz y at the southeastern edge of the Saskatchewan evaporites. Ore extraction began in 1962 and at the present time the annual mining capacity is in excess of eleven million tons of potash ore.A generalized geological section is shown in Figure I. The mining horizon is overlay in by 100 feet of rock salt followed by a thin bed of competent dry shale. The strata in the next 1,500 feet are generally competent and locally water bearing. The Blairmore formation contains strata of water-bearing unconsolidated sand. Below the mining horizon, rock salt is interbedded with anhydrite bands.The 8-foot mining bed is distinguished mainly by grade and clay content, as there is no definite bed boundary. The chief mineral s are halite, sylvite and, in some cases, carnallite, with up to 2 per cent disseminated clay. The ore is coarse grained, with crystals averaging one-half to three-quarters inch across.The major mining problem is related to the fact that the Dawson Bay formation, overlying the evaporites, contains areas and channels that are highly porous and permeable and are filled with unsaturated brine under high pressure. Consequently, all mining areas, with no exception, must be so designed that the overburden salt stratum remain s competently supported for the duration of the mine .This paper outlines a successful engineering method of determining the stability of the pillar s and designing a stable room -and-pillar mining system."

"Since May 1980, New Brunswick has called separate tenders for the right to explore and develop several potash prospects, as well as areas underlain by Alberta oil shale. These tender calls had in common the provision for a basic ad-valorem royalty, combined with sharing of cash flow after exceeding a 15-20% discontinued cash flow rate-of-return threshold. In the case of potash, the bidding variable was a share of cash flow, but for oil shale it was exploration expenditures committed, with the cash flow sharing to be negotiated at the time of application for a production lease. The Millstream potash occurrence, previously discovered by government drilling, received five bids (21.1% highest), the Dorchester ""grassroots area"" with four surmised drill targets apparently received no bids, and in the case of oil shale there were only two bids on the one block previously subjected to the most exploration.It is concluded that New Brunswick will not be successful in awarding the potash or oil shale rights in return for a comparable level of basic royalty and cash flow share as in the case of Millstream, unless it spends money in discovering prospects or sharing the exploration risk with companies. The approach is likely to work for oil shales only if current exploration proves the existence of much high-quality material or a definite trend of real increases in the price of oil is again established. Undoubtedly, it continues to be desirable to assure an on-going stable investment climate through award of potash and oil shale rights under terms which provide for a return that the public and future governments will consider fair. This could mean that some form or risk sharing with companies would be advisable."

Predictions of coal cleaning plant performance from the washability data are traditionally used at the conceptual design stage of a coal preparation plant to confirm process selection. The development of computer programs which simulate the operation of a plant facilitates the optimization of product yield and quality, and ultimately proceeds. It is shown that the optimum is sensitive to changes in mine operations and market price structure. A computerized review of operations is thus recommended as an on-going activity .

"A low-grade concentrate from the Crevier Township, Quebec, containing 1.8% Ta205 and 13.7% Nb205 was reduced with carbon at 1600°C, and niobium and tantalum were selectively absorbed in liquid iron. To slag off the zirconia-rich gangue, some silica and lime were added as flux. Metallic iron was added in such a way that the combined contents of TaC and NbC did not exceed 20% in the ferroalloy . Up to 95% of the niobium, and up to 80% of the tantalum contained in the concentrate were recovered in the metal. The ferroalloy was ground finely and dissolved in 2 wt % sulphuric acid to leach out iron and silicon preferentially. The insoluble residue consisted principally of NbC and TaC, the calcination of which yielded an enriched concentrate comprising 80% Nb2O5 and 8% Ta2O5. The insoluble residue could also be chlorinated to obtain an impure liquid of Nb2Cl5 and TaCl5. Process variables and their effects are discussed in terms of higher metal recoveries in the smelting.IntroductionPresently, about one-third of the world production of tantalum comes from the pyrometallurgical reprocessing of tin slag, a by-product of tin smelting, containing sometimes 2 to 10% Ta205 and about the same amount of Nb205. Upon heating tin slags with carbon at about 1600°C in an electric furnace, tantalum and niobium oxides are converted to TaC and NbC, which are absorbed by the coexisting phase of molten metallic iron(1,2). The Fe-Nb-Ta-C melts cannot be decarburized by oxidation because of the preferential formation of Nb and Ta oxides over CO gas(3). So, the ferroalloys containing tantalum and niobium carbides are commercially treated by acid-leaching and I or chlorination to eliminate iron and thus permitting the eventual recovery of purified tantalum and niobium oxides(2).Absorbing Ta and Nb carbides in molten iron was first proposed and demonstrated by Zimmerley and Back(4) in 1957 in order to recover selectively tantalum and niobium from lowgrade concentrates. The process was successfully applied to the electric furnace smelting of tin slags by Hunter and Fursmant(5) over a period preceding 1965."

"Late in 1981, a six-rope friction hoist was installed in the Number 2 shaft at Les Mines Seleine Inc. on the Madeleine Islands in Quebec. This paper deals with the reasoning behind the selection of hoisting equipment from the economical point of view, safety point of view, future needs point of view, etc.After establishing the basic parameters for the hoisting system, features of the most common types of hoists (i.e. single-drum hoist, double-drum hoist, Koepe hoist) are briefly laid out. The reasons for selecting a friction (Koepe) hoist are summarized. However, why go for a six-rope hoist rather than the (in North America) more common four-rope hoist? As the subject hoist is the first six-rope hoist in Canada, this question is studied in more detail, covering initial cost, maintenance cost, etc., as well as practical aspects, such as safety, physical dimensions, etc.In summary, experiences from other multi-rope hoist installations world-wide are presented.BackgroundIn 1980, Seleine Mines Inc. was established as a subsidiary of SOQUEM. The new mining company was to develop and operate a salt mine and associated harbour on the Madeleine Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The Madeleine Islands form part of the Province of Quebec. The mine has a planned annual output of 1.2 million metric tonnes of salt, with reserves in sight for over 20 years. Mining will be by room and pillar, with an underground primary crusher and treatment plant. From the underground treatment plant, the salt will be transferred via conveyors to a 5.5-metre-diameter circular shaft and hoisted to the surface. Surface transportation to the warehouse will again be via conveyor, and a conveyor will also transport the salt from the warehouse to the point of shiploading."
