Anglo American has used the extractant M 5640 in all the Divisions, which is an aldoxime modified with TXIB formulation, except in Los Bronces, where an aldoxime modified with tridecanol (TDA) formulation is used. It is a well-known fact that the aldoxime degrades while the modifier does not. With time the aldoxime/modifier ratio decreases significantly depending on the operating conditions of each plant. In order to evaluate the effect of this increasing modifier content in the organic of the plant, especially in the organic losses, a complete metallurgical test work program was started at laboratory and pilot plant scale. Results showed that the addition of aldoxime without modifier does not affect the chemical performance of the organic phase, but there is a significant decrease in the viscosity and density of the organic phase. Based on the results obtained in the metallurgical program, it was decided to run plant scale tests at both SX plants, Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. In these tests, instead of adding the usual formulation of aldoxime modified with TXIB to maintain the organic inventory, CuPRO MEX™ 3406 which is an aldoxime without modifier is going to be added until the original aldoxime/modifier ratio is reached. The plant tests started in April 2013 at Mantos Blancos and in June 2013 at Mantoverde and will last 18 months. The results obtained at the laboratory and pilot plant scale, together with the preliminary plant test results, are discussed in this paper.

THE most acceptable approacl1 to analyzing rock behaviour, at the present time, is based on the application of principles of mechanics and strength of materials. Analyses have been made in which the criterion of failure is based on maximum stress (1) and on Mohr's rupture theory (2). If such analyses are to be carried out, the mechanical properties of the rock must be known within acceptable limits. Although an adequate correlation of laboratory test results with field conditions has not been established, test results have been published (3) on the basis of their comparative value. That is, test results may be useful for comparing the behaviour of different rocks under similar loading conditions or of a particular rock under different loading conditions. This study aims at establishing some of the mechanical properties of an andesite rock by testing specimens cut _from diamond drill core. Drill core (EX) was provided from run-of-mine drilling by New Dickenson Mines Ltd. and Campbell Red Lake Mines Ltd.

"MINING is one of Canada's most important industries and exploration is the life-blood of this dynamic and exciting business. The health and growth of the mining industry of tomorrow depends on the effort and thought that go into exploration today. The Members of the Geology Division of the C.I.M. are directly concerned with exploration, and it is fitting that this Division should periodically sponsor reviews of the thoughts and practices of the exploration com-munity. Accordingly, we have invited seven leading authorities to contribute papers dealing with specialized aspects of this field.Exploration is a science, or art if you will, that is constantly changing in keeping with our expanding knowledge of geology and technology. It started with the old-time prospectors who searched the wilds for exposures of ore, and made finds that developed into some of our most important mining camps. As more discoveries were made, they were able to relate certain types of deposits with particular geological conditions, laying the foundation for modern concepts of economic geology. The mapping by the early field parties lacked detail and usually served to outline the ""greenstone"" areas considered favourable for prospecting. More de-tailed studies through the years by government and company geologists led to new thoughts on the origin, emplacement and geological control of orebodies. The continuing diversity of opinion on these subjects indicates a need for further research, but each year sees an increase in our reserves of factual information."

"As part of Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR) expansion, a new Nickel Electrowinning Tank House, with a nameplate capacity of 32 400 tons per annum, was constructed. Commissioning of the new electrowinning technology, which involved world first full deposit plating, commenced in 2011.The old nickel electrowinning process at the RBMR used starter sheets which, along with a divided cell configuration, was very labour intensive and exposed operators to high levels of aerosols that contained both nickel and acid. To overcome this problem two key design intents of the new technology are aerosol abatement and minimising labour in the electrowinning cell environment, with a design target to reduce the nickel occupational exposure limit (OEL) to half the legislated limit of 0.1 mg.m-3.Commissioning of the new technologies adopted to achieve mist abatement is described, together with a review of technical and operational challenges relating to the titanium blank edge strips, blank roughness and sandblasting optimisation, blank quality control, electrode spacing, polyconcrete cell dimensional stability and cell top furniture. The impact of these on process performance is presented and the development of fault checking and rectification methods, to maintain high process performance, is explained.INTRODUCTIONThe expansion of Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery necessitated the construction of a new Nickel Tank House to achieve two primary objectives, namely increasing the nickel electrowinning capacity from 22 500 tons per annum (tpa) to 32 400 tpa nickel, and a design to reduce the nickel aerosols to 0.05 mg.m-3 as a time weighted average over 8 hours, which is half of the legislated occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 0.1 mg.m-3."

Methods have been developed for processing and analyzing reflected solar radiation data obtained by Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper multispectral scanner. Spatial resolution for the Landsat series satellites is 30 meters per side per pixel. Materials on the Earth?s surface absorb or reflect different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum depending on their physical and chemical properties and, therefore, typically have characteristic spectral ?signatures?. Using these signatures, environmental parameters such as surface water and vegetation may be identified and analyzed. Principal advantages of the satellite image method for environmental monitoring include: a relatively long historic period beginning in 1985 for which information is available, the reliable numerical basis for the results, and the ability to assemble a historic environmental baseline and provide on-going monitoring for large or remote areas where standard monitoring methods may not be practical. However, because the long-term continued operation of Landsat 5 is problematic due to the age of the equipment, QuickBird and IKONOS satellite images were processed to determine if the two systems are sufficiently similar in their results to allow continuing monitoring using QuickBird data. The QuickBird satellite was launched in 2001 and collects the same visible and near infrared spectral bandwidths as Landsat 5, allowing for equivalent process algorithms for QuickBird, IKONOS, and Landsat 5 data. Spatial resolution for the QuickBird images is 2.4 meter per side, allowing for more detailed characterization of the land surface; spatial resolution for the IKONOS images is 4 meter per side. Because of several differences between the satellite systems, including degradation of the Landsat 5 sensor, it is necessary to calibrate QuickBird and IKONOS results to the Landsat results to verify similarity. Recent images from the satellite systems have been processed and results have been compared to determine the validity of comparing Landsat 5 and QuickBird/IKONOS images so that these newer data can be used reliably in the future instead of Landsat 5 data. Results from this comparison are presented in this paper and suggest that analyses for vegetation using the two satellite systems are comparable, and that little calibration is required. Results from comparison of surface water results from the two systems are less comparable and is currently being investigated by the authors.

The effects of copper on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ultrasonic melt treated Al-xCu (x=0, 4) alloys were investigated. The densities of alloys were increased and their grain sizes were decreased by UST. The hardness and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that the amount of solute Cu within Al matrix was increased by UST. Both the yield and tensile strengths of Al-4Cu alloy were increased by UST. The improved mechanical properties of Al-4Cu alloy by UST were probably due to the reduced amount of casting defects (e.g. pore), grain refinement, and enhanced solid-solution hardening of Cu.

"High-risk underwater mining operations necessitate characterizing spatial heterogeneity and resource uncertainty. Local average subdivision is a method of simulating spatial deposit variability inside a cell through a sequence of discretization stages, during which a cell is further subdivided into four or eight cells. New developments are presented to validate simulated deposit models and deal with point measurements of geotechnical and ore-grade properties. This paper illustrates the relevance of translating spatial deposit variability into financial or operational performance indicators during underwater resource exploitation. Two synthetic case studies highlight the challenges of underwater mining in relation to production plans and equipment selection.RÉSUMÉ Les opérations d’extraction minière subaquatique à risque élevé exigent une caractérisation de l’hétérogénéité spatiale et de l’incertitude de la ressource. La moyenne locale de subdivision est une méthode de simuler la variabilité spatiale du gisement dans une cellule par une séquence d’étapes de discrétisation durant lesquelles une cellule est subdivisée en quatre ou huit cellules. De nouveaux développements sont présentés afin de valider les modèles de simulation des gisements et de traiter des mesures ponctuelles des propriétés géotechniques et de teneur du minerai. "Several Fe, Fe-Cu, and Cu-Ag prospects hosted by Mesozoic carbonate-rich sedimentary rocks that were intruded by diorite stocks define an approximately 20 × 200 km belt along the Andes Cordillera of southwest Mendoza province, Argentina (34°-36°S). This belt includes the Hierro Indio and Vegas Peladas Fe skarns, Las Choicas, and several other Cu-(Ag) prospects.The main features of the Fe skarns include: association with mantle-derived middle Miocene (~15-11 Ma) diorite stocks and sills; widespread alteration including epidote ± amphibole ± magnetite endoskarns, and zoned garnet (Grs0-66 Adr32.5-100) ± magnetite ± pyroxene (Di24-50 Jo2-9 Hd74-41) exoskarns formed from oxidized, saline, high-temperature brines (530º-660ºC; 60-70 wt.% NaCl equiv.); and magnetite-hematite orebodies associated with quartz ± epidote ± calcite ± actinolite formed at lower temperatures (290º-436ºC) from saline fluids (32-50 wt.% NaCl equiv.) of magmatic origin.West of the Fe skarn belt, the Valle Hermoso district covers more than 300 km2 and hosts several poorly known Cu-(Ag) prospects (estimated 30 Mt with 1.5% Cu and 20 g/t Ag). These prospects share many characteristics with the iron oxide copper-gold-type systems and manto-type Cu deposits of northern and central Chile. One of the prospects (Las Choicas) is located at the apex of a regional 015°-trending anticline, along the contact of stratified calcareous sandstone and limestone (Neocallovian-Oxfordian) with a diorite pluton. This pluton has positive Ta and Nb anomalies (on normalized diagrams) and a high Ti content, features uncommon in Miocene diorites associated with Fe skarns and of magmas derived from sub-arc mantle sources. Alteration at Las Choicas includes early widespread chlorite + calcite ± albite ± scapolite ± ilmenite or titanite ± apatite, and local actinolite ± hematite ± biotite alteration of diorite and sedimentary rocks along contacts. Later Cu mineralization (1%-10% Cu) is associated with calcite ± albite ± quartz alteration in fractures, vein networks, and crackle breccias. Mineralization is zoned from bornite ± chalcopyrite ± millerite with Zn, As, Mo, Ag, and U anomalies in the main orebody, through chalcopyrite-rich breccias with Zn anomalies, and chalcopyrite ± tetrahedrite vein networks with Sb, As, Ag, and Zn anomalies in the uppermost zone, to a Cu-depleted pyrite-rich envelope with Co anomalies, and finally to late, barren calcite veins in distal zones."

"The regional stratigraphy of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Subbasin indicates that evaporites could be present in the Marysville Subbasin, part of what was formerly called the Central New Brunswick Platform. The Windsor Group consists of basement-fringing, algal build-ups (Gays River Formation), in places with intercalated siliciclastics (Parleeville), which are laterally equivalent to deeper-water, very thin to thinly bedded, euxinic limestone (Macumber). The Macumber is overlain by stratiform, nodular to mosaic anhydrite (Upperton) that is hosted by carbonate or calcareous siliciclastics. The sulphate also is equivalent, in part, to the algal buildups. Deep-water salts (Cassidy Lake) which overlie and in places are laterally equivalent to Upperton rocks have a basincentre distribution. The Windsor Group is overlain by shallow water evaporites and mudstones (Clover Hill) or by greenish grey mudstone (""transitional beds""). The paleogeographic distribution of these rocks provide important clues that help predict where deposits of salt and potash can occur.IntroductionCurrently there are three known potash deposits in southern New Brunswick (2, 3 and 4, in Fig. I). All three deposits occur in the Windsor Group of the Moncton Subbasin, but until recently their exact stratigraphic position within the group was not known.The Windsor Group is a cyclic sequence of carbonates, evaporites and red beds that is up to 1.0 km in thickness (Schenk 1969, p. 1038). It is Late Mississippian (Visean) in age and the type area is near Windsor, Nova Scotia. The group was named by Dawson (1873) but the rocks were described earlier by Hartt (1867). Dawson (ibid.) was the first to assign rocks in southern New Brunswick to the Windsor Group."

Radon emanation rates. J. and compositions of materials from the Canadian Certified Reference Materials Project (CCRMP) indicate that the fraction of the Rn produced that escapes, E, is usually 1% to 8% and the 238U decay chain is nearly in secular equilibrium. For some Chinese ore standards, E values are higher than f or the CCRMP materials. Standard ore tailings have 2/oPb concentrations higher than expected from their 226Ra concentrations and Rn escape rates (12 - 34%) . Biological materials have E ˜100%, their ash E ˜0%. Pelletizing ore powders at 20 000 lb/in2 reduces J by only 20 - 40% but only 2% of Rn escapes from pressed Li2B4O7 pellets and 0.01 - 0.04% from fused Na2B4O7 or Li2B4O7 discs. Large, difficult-to-explain random variations in J are observed in some situations but several highly reproducible ways of measuring emanation rates have been found.

The ores after being mined, or at any other stage of a concentrating process, can be analysed for the uranium dissemination and from these results the possibility of an economical concentration can be estimated.The electronic and mechanical parts of the equipment are described. Difficulties in the operation's, and means by which they have •been and are •being overcome, are discussed. The capacity of the units, the results obtained, the man-power required, and other pertinent data are presented. Simple control analysis on the percent U3O8 has been developed.Research is continuing along lines to develop a more completely automatic unit using a scintillation detector, and applying a few new ideas and some devices that have been developed in colour sorting.IntroductionIt is well known how important the Geiger counter is in the field of exploration for uranium. It was in late 1946 that Dr. C. Lapointe, of the Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, first started work on an automatic picking unit to concentrate uranium ores. He used the principle that if a number of pieces of unknown ore, some of which contained uranium, were individually brought up close to a Geiger-Müller tube, then the pieces containing uranium could •be easily picked out due to their activity. Since then a good deal of work has been done by the Bureau of Mines in conjunction with Eldorado Mining and • Refining (1944), Limited, to develop an electronic concentrator."

Paste backfill as a means of supporting underground mining is gaining popularity. Despite this trend, engineering and design of mine paste backfill systems are still largely based on empirical methods rather than established scientific principles. Because of a lack of sound understanding of mineral paste flow, some degree of trial and error is often involved during commissioning and operating of new paste fill systems. New operations often have to be built with flexibilities and contingencies, escalating the overall project costs. This paper reviews the applicability of some scientific and engineering principles to mineral paste flows. Recent experimental data are used to illustrate important points. The phenomenon of mineral paste flow is examined under the context of improving the efficiency and reliability of underground delivery. Gaps in our understanding of mineral paste rheology are pointed out and from those some future research directions naturally emerge. Status and problems of the current engineering and design practice are also briefly discussed.

Saganoseki Smelter, one of the largest copper producers in Japan, currently operates a single flash smelting furnace to produce 450,000 tons of new copper annually. The smelter used to employ two flash furnaces, and integrated the two into one in 1996. Since then, various improvements to its facilities and technologies have been made to increase productivity. To upgrade the operation efficiency, "stability" was considered a key issue, and the measures were taken to increase the operation and facility reliability. Currently, the furnace is running at a feed rate of 215 DMT/h, while the furnace utilization has been maintained at 97%. This paper outlines recent improvements that have made to increase furnace productivity and efficiency.
