Acid mist is the undesired result of copper electro-winning (EW) process, generating a contaminated and hazardous environment in the working areas, as well as promoting high corrosion conditions for structures and equipment in the EW tank-house due to the buoyancy of sulfuric acid in aerosol form. Likewise, organic entrainments that occasionally occur in this process contaminate the cathodes, as well as increasing the risk of fire. LateralVex® and LateralFlow® are technologies that effectively and efficiently solve these problems, without affecting the usual activities of the operators, thus presenting a significant distinction with respect to other technologies that seek to solve these problems. Minera Antucoya, an AMSA group company, which produces 80,000 tons of electrolytic Cu per year, decided to install both technologies for its EW tank-house, LateralVex® in commercial cells and LateralFlow® in scavenger cells to keep both the acid mist and the organic entrainments under control. This paper presents the effects of applying these technologies in Minera Antucoya’s electro-winning plant, the challenges addressed, the difficulties encountered, the problems and opportunities that their implementation involved, as well as the surprising results obtained at the time of measuring the acid mist— less than one hundred’s part of the Allowed Weighted Limit—in samples taken with the plant operating at maximum current capacity. Additionally, the paper includes some of the improvements identified during the period, more than 3 years, in which these technologies have been in operation in Minera Antucoya. INTRODUCTION Electrowinning is the most used electro-chemical process in the hydrometallurgical industry for the recovery of highly pure metallic copper as its final product, which is formed in previous stages in an aqueous medium that goes through a selective process using organic solvents to separate impurities and concentrate the metal in a sulfuric acid solution. In the last stage, this solution goes through a process in which high- density current at a low voltage is applied, so that the metal in the solution will deposit in solid state on a plate, usually a stainless-steel plate. This last process involves the generation of other sub-products due to the electro-chemical dissociation of the electrolyte’s components, or to the addition of chemical additives, or due to specific physical conditions or lack of controls during the operation.

With profitability pressures in heavy industry increasing, many producers are turning to predictive maintenance as a means of harvesting untapped value from their production assets. Corporations are losing their maintenance and processing core competencies through attrition. As capital budgets are being trimmed, manufacturers are consolidating operating units into fewer, more profitable routes. Maintenance functions, however, typically receive low priority when investment is made, since many companies consider maintenance costs as ?overhead?. Condition-based monitoring, integrated to Level I and Level II process inputs, is seen as the most cost-effective solution to the implementation of predictive maintenance strategies. This paper will review the evolution of preventive and predictive maintenance programs, highlighting examples of successful application of integrated condition monitoring.

"Mineral deposits and prospects of the Pan African Saldanian orogenic belt in the southwestern Cape Province South Africa, are reviewed. Despite the entire absence of operating base or precious metal mines in the area, this study has established at least four metal associations that offer enticing exploration potential.The poly-phase deformed, low-grade metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary Malmesbury Group constitutes a complex, poorly understood supracrustal sequence that has been loosely subdivided into the Tygerberg, Swartland and Boland tectono-stratigraphic terranes by northwesterly trending fault zones. Syn- and post-tectonic granitoids of the Cape Granite Suite selectively intruded these terranes. Early S-types preferred the Tygerberg terrane whereas the later I-types dominate the remaining areas. Anorogenic A-type granites, however, occur in all three domains. Known metallization is directly or indirectly related to the intrusives, yet syngenetic deposits are conspicuously absent from the supracrustals. Four metal associations have been identified.• Cassiterite-wolframite (± Au, Cu, Mo, Fe-sulfides) in quartz and quartz/aplite veins hosted by tourmalinized and locally greissenized S-type granite. Similar exo-granitic veins occur in proximal metamorphites.• Juxtaposed disseminated, stockwork, breccia and vein style Cu-Mo-Fe-(Au)-sulfide mineralization hosted by mafic to intermediate intrusives of high K calc-alkaline, I-type affinity. • Cu-Mo-Au-sulfides hosted by hydraulic breccia pipes, stocks and veins occurring in anorogenic A-type alkali feldspar granites and amphibole quartz syenites.• Scheelite with minor Cu-Mo-sulfides and Au-associated with endo- and exo-skarns spatially related to I-type monzogranite, granite and alkali feldspar granite.The first three associations occur along the Yzerfontein-Helderberg-Zone, a 180 km lineament in the Tygerberg terrane, a zone exploited by syn-, late- and post-tectonic intrusives and their related mineralization. The fourth association is typical of the Boland terrane. The spatial and temporal relationships between the various metal associations is interpreted as the result of sequential intrusion of relative early high level S-type, followed by intermediate level I-type and finally anorogenic A-type granitoids during the evolution of a contracting continental margin arc and its irmer arc. This plate tectonic setting suggests subduction in an easterly direction underneath the Kalahari craton. The spatial configuration of the various terranes at the present erosional levels is the result of rifting and significant differential vertical displacement following cessation of subduction, a terminal tectonic event possibly synchronous with intrusion of the A-type granitoids.Near surface preserved roof zones and cupolas of both S- and I-type granitoids in the Tygerberg and Boland terranes, respectively, render these areas extremely prospective for Sn, W, Mo and Au mineralization. The presence of intermediate to mafic volcanics, a diversity of calcareous lithotypes and favorable plate tectonic setting of the Malmesbury Group suggest potential for the thus far elusive VMS, MVT and Sedex base metal and minor precious metal deposits."

This paper focusses on technological developments which occurred in the village of Deloro, Ontario between 1868 and 1919. These developments illustrate the manner in which improved metallurgical processes linked Ontario mineral resources to industrial expansion. Overview of Deloro The village of Deloro is in Hastings county, about 5 miles from the village of Marmora, the site of the old Marmora iron works and the more recent Marmoraton iron mine. In this area, the Canadian Shield meets the Great Lakes lowlands. The first settlement in the vicinity occurred in the 1820s and was associated with the Marmora iron works. Settlement grew around agriculture. Gold was discovered in Hastings county in 1868. Deloro - the name derives from gold - developed as a concentrated settlement in proximity to several gold mines and the related processing activities. By 1901, substantial smelting works were successfully producing gold and arsenic from local ores. The village was developing as a company town within the framework of benevolent paternalism. For reasons associated with markets and with local ore supplies, the Deloro mills were idle for a period beginning in 1902. Developments in later periods connected Deloro to world events. In 1903, silver was discovered at Cobalt, Ontario. By 1907, M.J. O'Brien, who owned mines at Cobalt, had purchased the Deloro works and was using them to process Cobalt-area ores*.

A new thermal analysis technique has been developed and tested. It utilizes the enhancement in heat transfer characteristics associated with a recent advancement in heat pipe technology. Heat is extracted from a liquid sample of a melt taken in-situ within a vessel or furnace. The rate of heat extraction is such as to cause the sample to solidify. The technique was tested in both laboratory scale and industrial scale (Grenville Castings, Perth, Ontario). A 356 Al Alloy, subjected to various melt treatments was used to perform the tests. Classical thermal analysis was also performed simultaneously using a preheated graphite cup and at the same melt conditions. The comparison showed the potential of the new technique over classical thermal analysis. The major advantages of the new method are that it conducts the analysis inside the melt (i.e. a physical sample is not removed from the melt), it consumes less time and the cooling rate can be precisely controlled during the solidification process. In this study, the effect of silicon on the microstructure, mechanical properties and hot tearing susceptibility of permanent mould cast AZ91E magnesium alloy was investigated. Varying amounts of silicon (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt.%) were added to AZ91E in the form of an Al-53 wt.% Si master alloy. The phase formation, grain size and solidification behavior of each alloy were characterized and related to their tensile properties and hot tearing susceptibility. The results showed that the addition of silicon resulted in the formation of Mg2Si particles. The presence of these particles led to an increase of the hardness, but was detrimental to the tensile strength and elongation of AZ91E. However, silicon significantly reduced the hot tearing susceptibility of AZ91E. This was attributed to the reduction of the grain size and the decreased freezing range of AZ91E, which contributed to improve the interdendritic feeding during the last stage of solidification.

"The Lake George antimony deposit comprises a system of stibnite-bearing quartz veins that cut Silurian greywacke and slate. The stibnite-bearing ore zone is in part enveloped by a uraniferous zone.The ore-bearing quartz vein system occupies an easterly striking, gently north-dipping fracture system that cuts across north-northeasterly trending gently southwest-plunging, tight Acadian (early Middle Devonian) folds. This vein system continues at depth into a siliceous skarn zone intruded by altered granite porphyry dykes, which constitute probably a late phase of the Hawkshaw granitoid intrusion to the north.Most of the ore occurs in a northeast-plunging, trough shaped vein structure that formed where the vein system (gently north-dipping) intersects the axial surf ace zone (steeply northwest-dipping) of an Acadian synform. The trough shaped structure resulted from deflection of the fracture zone (containing the vein system) by competent beds.Emplacement of the quartz-stibnite veins was preceded by, and is in part penecontemporaneous with, the formation ofa micaceous-argillaceous alteration halo, which in turn intersects a patchy biotite alteration zone.The hypabyssal intrusions associated with the Lake George deposit probably represent a late phase (early Carboniferousr) of the nearby Hawkshaw intrusive granitoid complex. IntroductionThe Lake George Antimony Mine is situated 40 km southwest of Fredericton and 2.5 kin north of Lake George, New Brunswick (Fig. 1). The mine is owned by Consolidated Durham Mines and Resources Ltd.Shaw (1940) described the early history and development of the mine. In subsequent years, available drill cores were relogged by several geologists. Much new information became available when an extensive diamond drilling program (Kidd , 1970) was started by Consolidated Durham Mines and Resources Ltd. in 1970. A study of the geology and economic potential of the deposit was made by Glover (1973). Abbott and Watson (1975) made a study of the ore mineralogy. Available drill cores were relogged and a preliminary study of the fracture system in the mine was made by G.A. Pierce and A.A. Ruitenberg during 1976. Outcrops in the area sur rounding the mine are extremely sparse.Between 1976 and 1979 the present authors made a detailed study of the mine workings, available drill core and regional structure in the vicinity of the mine, with results set forth in this paper. The regional geologic setting of the deposit, the geometry and structural controls of the ore zones, and the mineral zonation and rock alteration are emphasized."

"In the first half of 1990, Cambior earned $1104 million, or $0.37 per share, on revenues of$66.4 million. The company's strong cash position, attained late in 1989 and in the beginning of1990 through the exercise of warrants, put working capital at $83.8 million as of June 30, 1990. Long-term debt was reduced by over $10 million during the weak gold market, leaving the company with a debt to equity ratio of only 0.03. Production for the six first months of 1990 was 107 720 oz. Au, an increaseof24% over the corresponding period in 1989.Financial Profile/Results and Corporate Financial StrategiesTotal revenue for the 1989 fiscal year was $116,883,000 compared to $109,848,000 for 1988. The 1989 results achieved despite a lower average gold price, resulted from a higher level of commercial gold production and a 115% increase in investment income over 1988. Investment income rose to $3,568,000 in 1989 due to higher levels of cash assets.Cambior's mine operating costs increased 19% to $68,561,000 in 1989 from $57,472,000 in 1988. This increase resulted from rising operating costs at the Doyon Mine ($250/oz to $274/oz) due to the shift from open pit to underground operations, as well as from the start -up of three new mines with relatively higher costs. These costs have reached a stable level that should be maintained for the next few years.In 1989, net exploration expenses were $6,838,000, down 31070 from 1988, partially due to the Canadian tax reforms introduced since 1987. Depreciation and depletion grew by $1,432,000 in 1989, reflecting a higher volume of commercial production from the Pierre Beauchemin, Lucien C. Beliveau and Chimo mines.Net earnings for 1989 amounted to $17,661,000 or $0.73 per share compared to $17,438,000 or $0.74 per share in 1988.Cambior has an exceptionally liquid and strong balance sheet. As at December 31, 1989, net working capital stood at $85.6 million, with a total assets base of $338.6 million. With a long-term debt (including gold loans) of $21.5 million and shareholders' equity of $277.2 million, Cambior has a debt to equity ratio of 8%. All but about $100,000 of long-term debt is in the form of gold loans.The total market value for Cambior's stock as at September 10, 1990, stands at $420million, based on recent stock market prices. Effective flocculation and dewatering of slurry streams containing clays (particularly kaolin and smectites which are often <200nm in lateral dimension) is becoming increasingly urgent. Release of water (often >75 wt%), for recycle and reduced make-up water consumption, from slurries in tailings streams and dam beds is usually slow and incomplete. Changes in settling rates and solids density of tailings containing clays can be achieved in practice by changes in pH, dissolved cations and flocculant additions. To achieve fast separation of clays from water and minimization of retained water, individual particles need to be bound in the initial stages of thickening into large, high-density aggregates, which may sediment more rapidly with lower intra-aggregate water content. Quantitative STIMAN (STructural IMage ANalysis) cryo-SEM imaging, shows that the structure of aggregates formed before flocculant addition has a determinative effect on these outcomes. Without flocculant addition, 4 stages occur in the mechanism of primary dewatering of kaolinite: initially separate particles and aggregates are dispersed (<0.3GP, where GP is the gel point); a partially-gelled chain network then forms linking particles edge-edge (EE) still well below the OP but remains largely suspended; after an induction time, this network structure rearranges from EE to face-face (FF) contacts densifying, compacting and dewatering the aggregates with settling rates well above Stoke&apos;s Law estimates for >20µm particles or aggregates; the GP is rapidly reached during settling producing a network spanning the vessel with compressive strength. This sponge-like structure with EE oriented particles limits slurry dewatering because the steric effect in the resulting partially-gelled structure is much more dominant than the electrostatic effects predicted by DLVO theory. Van der Waal&apos;s forces at very close distances, as particles slide across each other, may be responsible for the EE to FF change in structure. In this way, the previously extended network contracts, and when the solid volume fraction is low, the continuous network breaks apart forming aggregates and aggregate associations as flocs which arc able to freely settle. These densified aggregates settle at increased rate, give lower bed density and retain less water after drainage. With flocculant addition, the internal structure and networking of the pre-aggregates is largely preserved but they are rapidly and effectively bound together by the bridging action of the flocculant(s). The STIMAN analysis shows that there is a inverse correlation of intra-aggregate porosity (and void permeability) with Darcian permeability (and extent of dewatering) whereas there is a strong positive correlation of Darcian inter-aggregate permeability with settling and primary dewatering rate.

"The Lucky Jim mine is at Zincton in Slocan mmmg division; on the Kaslo-Nakusp branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. It is owned and operated by Zincton Mines; Limited; a subsidiary of Sheep Creek Gold Mines; Limited. The mine is far in the lead in the production of zinc in the Slocan. Its recorded production from concentrates and shipping ore was 102; 260; 191 pounds of zinc to the end of 1945.GENERAL GEOLOGY With the exception of acidic dykes the rocks near the Lucky Jim mine belong to the Slocan series, which is Triassic in age and consists principally of argillaceous rocks. It disconformably overlies greenstones of the Triassic Kaslo series about 3 miles to the northeast, and is cut by granitic rocks of the Nelson batholith 5 miles to the southeast.The sedimentary rocks in this area are best referred to on the whole as slates. They lie within the more fissile basal part of the Slocan series. The term 'slate belt' conveniently distinguishes this area of rocks characterized by slaty cleavage from the more massive argillites that are more characteristic of the Slocan as a whole. The contact between the slaty and massive argillites lies ½ mile southwest of the mine."

The mining industry has generally been slow to apply ion exchange processes to hydrometallurgical applications even if ion exchange offers an ideal solution for a particular problem. Two notable exceptions are in gold and uranium recovery. The largest application of ion exchange in the metals processing industry has been the use of resin-in-pulp (RIP) for gold recovery as an alternative to activated carbon. Iron is a ubiquitous impurity in hydrometallurgical solutions. In many cases, bulk removal of iron from the process solutions is accomplished by precipitation. However, precipitation for iron control is often accompanied by losses of base metals by co-precipitation. Increasingly, the option of ion exchange for removal of smaller amounts of iron from process solutions has been favoured. A number of applications have been developed and proven at the commercial scale for the removal/control of iron from a range of metal processing solutions. This paper provides an overview of the application of ion exchange for iron removal from a range of metal processing operations, including Cu, Ni and Co solutions. A number of case studies are provided which review operational and resin regeneration strategies and the impact upon the commercial operation of metal processing with improved iron control.

A magnesium alloy modeled after commercial alloy WE54 was thermomechanically processed and characterized to understand the mechanisms by which its texture can be randomized, as reported by Ball and Prangnell [1]. Samples were deformed in plane strain compression to prescribed strain levels at temperatures high enough to prevent cracking and then recrystallized. The deformation texture is very similar to that observed after plane strain compression (e.g., rolling) of other Mg alloys, such as common AZ31. However, the texture can radically evolve during recrystallization. Annealing above the precipitate solvus temperature results in a nearly random recrystallization texture where the initially strong basal texture is completely eliminated. Annealing below the solvus temperature produces a recrystallized texture similar to conventional Mg alloys, i.e., a weakened basal texture. If this same material is then annealed above the solvus to promote grain growth, a randomized texture evolves, which is similar that of samples simply recrystallized above the solvus. It is hypothesized that a sort of preferred growth mechanism, whereby grains with random orientation grow faster than those with the original basal texture, contributes significantly to the texture randomization observed in wrought magnesium alloys containing rare earth elements.

"The mining industry has developed a strong need for monitoring underground openings since bulk mining, used for increased productivity, has become the dominant mining method industry wide. The large stopes associated with bulk mining methods generally have to remain open and stable for several months, and monitoring is essential to provide an indication of ground response to mining and stope stability. The instrumentation data is also important during design optimization, which is used to maximize recovery, to minimize the dilution of ore and to minimize costs. Monitoring is essential to implement safety and is also critical in stope and mining sequence designs. The safety related aspects of monitoring include the protection of underground workers and the prevention of accidents by providing early warnings of the onset of any ground instability. The design related aspects of monitoring involve the development of data bases used for stope dimensioning and mine sequencing and timing and the monitoring of ground behaviour as a result of mining to verify the validity of the design thus allowing for remedial action during operation.Manual instrumentation data collection is, in a number of cases, economically unfeasible and, in many situations, dangerous as instrumented areas become inaccessible or extremely unstable. Also, because more and more complex instrumentation is being installed in underground operations, in several cases it becomes practically impossible to collect readings manually. The design and development of low-cost acquisition systems for mine wide monitoring would thus constitute an important step toward automation in excavation instrumentation. A unique menu-driven automatic 32-channel analog data acquisition and analysis system with a built-in rock failure warning mechanism has been designed and developed. This low cost acquisition system is capable of receiving, processing, displaying and storing the transmitted instrument data remotely and automatically. Computer software has been designed to provide data reduction and analysis immediately in the field and to automatically display results in graphical form for quick interpretation. Automatic data interpretation is used to show trends in rock mass behaviour and the system can be used to provide early warning of rock failure to the mine personnel working in there so that immediate remedial action can be safely taken."

This study investigates the role of nitrogen gas injection in the dissolution rate of Si into liquid Al. A unique revolving liquid metal tank was used, with a capacity of 50 kg of liquid Al. Experiments without gas injection have shown that the dissolution of Si increases as the bath superheat and the tangential velocity of the liquid Al increase. When injecting nitrogen gas at flow rates between 0-5 lit/min in the vicinity of the solid Si, results so far clearly show greater dissolution. In addition, results on the role of the gas flow rate relative to the position of the nozzle are presented and analyzed.

"This paper will discuss the application of tools and the evolution of computer-assisted procedures in the production planning process at Quintett e Coal Limited (QCL). In 1986, QCL produced 5.3 Mt of clean coal from their surface mining operation located in north eastern British Columbia. The structural complexity of the sedimentary deposit and high rate of mining necessitate the consideration of large amounts of geological information which continually updates the interpretation. There are multiple unit operations required during the process of mining through a given multi-seam sequence, which results in many interdependent faces, and multiple iterations of scheduling sequences in order to satisfy a given set of objectives. In order to facilitate these activities in a timely fashion, it was recognized that a computer systems&apos; capability needed to be developed which could increase the efficiency of information input, manipulation and output. IntroductionQuintette Coal Limited (QCL) has been operating a large metallurgical open pit coal mine in northeastern British Columbia, since 1982. The mine produced 5.3 Mt of clean coal in 1986 for export to Japan. Throughout the start-up period and the subsequent build -up of production levels, it became evident that the primary producing area was comprised of extremely complex faulted structures. This has resulted in development and modification of specialized mining methods employed to effectively recover the resource. Similarly, the planning and engineering techniques employed have been evolved over the same period of time. The implementation of computerized methods has been one of the major developments in this process, including geology interpretation, modelling, reserve definition, quantification, production planning and scheduling, and graphical plan presentation. These capabilities have been employed, in various forms, for project scale feasibility work and long range planning for some time, however, the use of computer tools for short-term, detailed production planning of a complex mining environment presents a different set of problems. It is hoped that a presentation of the current state of evolution and future plan s for development will be of interest to organizations considering implementation of a similar system."

"Modem aluminum smelters are facing significant operating cost pressure. Key methods used by smelters to manage this pressure are automation and production-information systems to optimize processes, manage quality, anticipate problems and reduce operating costs. In 2002, Aluminerie Alouette Inc. began its Phase II Expansion project, and retained the joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and Hatch (SLH) as its engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) team. Alouette had the distinction of being one of the most efficient aluminum smelters in the world. Alouette already understood the importance of systems integration in project delivery. For Phase II, key objectives were identified to ensure ""a state of the art"" integrated architecture that would support Alouette&apos;s production goals to integrate the existing facilities with the expansion, to form a single efficient facility and meet project schedule and budget targets. Achieving those objectives within the context of a large project often creates major challenges due to the nature of the traditional EPCM delivery model, which relies on several vendors and third-party-systems integrators. In this case, an integrated Alouette-SLH team was made responsible for all aspects of the systems integration, taking over the task from most suppliers. The integrated team was responsible for delivering an automation system and plant-wide-production IT system for the new facilities while accommodating migration for the existing systems. Through the use of rigorous methodology and advanced state of the art technology, the IT and automation strategy led to significant value creation and is recognized today as one of the key factors of the project&apos;s success. The primary results were: fast and efficient start-up of facilities, due to quality programming and implementation; a plant able to operate as a single entity; automation and IT systems delivered before time and under budget; standard programming methods implemented throughout the plant; and reduced and simplified maintenance."

Gold mining in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories started long before the concept of sustainability entered the academic literature and by the time the term enjoyed widespread public acceptance, the Yellowknife gold mining industry was in its sunset years. Nevertheless, the city of Yellowknife will long outlive the gold mines that it was founded on, demonstrating that not only can mining build sustainable communities, but that sustainable mining as a concept is an entirely valid precept. To this effect, the authors examine the complex economic and social aspects of the gold mining industry in the Yellowknife area over the last 70 years.

The mining industry in Turkey has been developing in the last 10 years. Mine wastes and tailings have thus been increasing, depending on the rising production rates. There are many problems related to accidents that occur in tailings damps. In this study, the applicability of the surface paste disposal (SPD) method for a Pb-Zn mine in western Turkey was examined. Density was 3.084 and specific surface area was 0.899 m2/g. The mill tailings have very low plasticity and show characteristics of clays and silts in terms of the Unified Soil Classification System. The particle size distribution of the tailings was 39.2% particles finer than 20 µm. The results of this study showed that the physical and chemical properties of mill tailings make them suitable for SPD.

"The Moulton Hill deposit is in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, 3 miles northeast of Sherbrooke. It is complex, both structurally and mineralogically, consisting of a narrow, irregular, mineralized zone that has been traced for a length of 600 feet, and in places to a depth of 1,000 feet, containing copper, lead, and zinc sulphides with a low content of gold and silver. It lies in a series of highly schistose micaceous rocks, believed to be of Ordovician age, but the mineralization is probably post-Lower Devonian. New details of the structure of the ore have become available since it was first described (1) , and as these show some striking peculiarities a further discussion is here merited .As detailed elsewhere, the deposit was discovered in 1942 as a result of regional geological studies followed by the application of electrical geophysical methods.Actual production began in July, 1944, and ceased in June, 1945. In an underground mine rock reinforcement elements and surface support units are often exposed to conditions that make them susceptible to corrosion. These unfavourable conditions include high relative humidity, the presence of dust and various other particles in the atmosphere, splashing of water and gases from blasting and diesel equipment. The corrosion of support systems is often associated with a loss in capacity that can be a major safety and economic concern in underground mines. A support system is composed of several components such as bolts, mesh, plate, retaining nut, cable ties. Every individual component can deteriorate due to atmospheric or aqueous corrosion and consequently can damage the integrity of the support system. This paper reports the results of a 5-yr study on the loss in capacity of individual support and reinforcement components at selected underground hard rock mines. As part of this investigation corrosion coupons were installed at selected locations at participating mines. A number of these coupons were recovered at regular time intervals and analysed for any signs of corrosion and subsequently tested to quantify any loss in capacity. The testing of the corrosion coupons was complemented by similar tests on recovered mesh and friction bolt specimens from the site. The collected data have provided useful insights on the factors that contribute to the corrosion of support systems. This knowledge can aid in the selection of appropriate support strategies and a reliable assessment of the predicted useful life of a support system and the need for rehabilitation.
