Engineers have known for some time that the efficiency of filtering iron ore concentrate slurry can be significantly improved by pre-heating the slurry ahead of the filters. However, heating such large quantities of dense slurry by conventional means has proven to be inefficient and high-maintenance. Recently though, submerged combustion was considered by Altos Hornos de Mexico SA (AHMSA), an integrated steel producer in the state of Coahuila, Mexico, as a means of pre-heating their iron ore concentrate. The company toured many iron ore facilities in Brasil and Labrador, reviewing their heating processes, and concluded that submerged combustion could provide a competitive advantage through operational efficiency and lower capital cost than steam boilers. Inproheat was retained by the company to design and manufacture a SubCom slurry heating system to heat 403 m3/h of iron ore concentrate slurry from 25°C to 60°C. The 60GJ/h SubCom system consists of five natural gas combustion chambers mounted in an iron ore concentrate storage tank. The system features a heat recovery unit whereby the exhaust gases are used to preheat the incoming slurry stream, giving the system an overall thermal efficiency of 95%. As a result, the steel company expects to realise significant improvements in filtering efficiency which will enable them to increase the capacity of their pelletising plant without installing additional filters.

"Gibraltar Mines is located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, 230 air miles north of Vancouver, B.C. and 38 miles north of Williams Lake, B.C. There are four mineable zones within the copper-molybdenite deposit: Gibraltar East, Gibraltar West, Pollyanna and Granite Lake. Open-pit reserves are 358 million tons which average 0.37% Cu and 0.016% MoS2 at a 0.25% Cu cut-off. The Granite Mountain pluton is one of the several Jurassic-Cretaceous intrusions which outcrop along the east side of the Fraser River fault system between Williams Lake and Prince George, B.C. The original Granite Mountain quartz diorite has been metamorphosed by a cataclastic deformation which foliated the rock on a regional scale. Attendant to the development of the foliation, the rock was saussuritized such that the present mineralogy is compatible with that of the greenschist facies. The presence of garnet-bearing assemblages is explained by a restricted increase in water pressure. Pre-mineral intrusive phases within the saussuritized quartz diorite are: (1) leucocratic quartz diorite, (2) aplite and (3) quartz-feldspar porphyry. A late chloritized hornblende dacite dyke is post-mineral. Quartz-feldspar porphyry and leucocratic quartz diorite are locally present on the inner sides of the Gibraltar East, Pollyanna and Granite Lake pits. Their presence suggests a core around which occurs an elliptically shaped sulphide-bearing stockwork. The stockwork, which comprises four ages of vein development, is imposed on and partly controlled by the regional foliation of the samssuritized quartz diorite."

"This paper summarizes the present-day usage of computers in the mining-metallurgical industry. The industry appears to be following a path taken by other industries in improving the operation of processing plants, production schedules, grade control and haulage performance. A reduction in the cost of computers and computing has been a significant factor.An attempt is made to forecast the future of computers in our industry. Such developments as time-sharing, mini-computers, and easy-to-understand process-oriented languages will lead to wider usage. Considerable strides have been made in the use of computers for laboratory data acquisition. In general, the implementation of new methods, new techniques and new equipment will require plant personnel to develop new skills. The universities are meeting this challenge by re-structuring curricula and offering special courses. Most vendors of computers already offer special courses within their own facilities at a customer's plant."

"The last edition of Tax Notes expressed concern about two proposed tax changes in Finance Minister Paul Martin's 1995 budget that could have detrimental effects on Canada's mining industry. This month, Tax Notes expands on these concerns. This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. "The Preston East Dome gold mine is in the southeastern part of Porcupine district, Ontario, 5 miles southeast of Timmins, and immediately south of the property of Dome Mines, Limited.The claims now owned by this Company were originally staked in 1909. After the property had remained dormant for many years, the present Company was organized in 1936 to resume development operations. Two shafts had been sunk: at the time of the early work on the claims, but lateral work from these failed to reach the ore deposits. A successful diamond drilling campaign undertaken under the direction of D. G. H. Wright, however, was followed by the sinking of a five-compartment shaft arid the erection of a mill. From the start of operations to the end of 1944, 1,292,000 tons of ore averaging $11.60 in gold a ton have been mined.An outstanding feature in this mine is the occurrence of the major gold deposits in quartz porphyry intrusives, though minor deposits are also found in the adjacent Keewatin volcanics. This paper presents a case study of how an asset strategy and zero based budget was developed for an existing crushing plant that had been purchased from the contract service provider by an Australian Iron Ore miner. The goal was to directly align the strategies and budget to the business goals. This however was not a simple task due to poor historical records and a general lack of information. These challenges were overcome and the benefits of a documented maintenance strategy, a justifiable zero based budget and employee engagement were realized.

This paper compares an integrated evaluation approach to decision-making with more traditional sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. The primary objective is to highlight the differences in NPV that can arise from using these evaluation methods in a top down and bottom-up approach. Results from three resource scenarios, derived from sampling a "virtual" ore body (reality) on grid spacings of 75m, 50m and 25m, are analyzed and compared.

"With the increase of human engineering activities, global climate change and active plate tectonics movement, the giant landslide frequently occurred in southwest China, which caused huge property and human losses. Besides, the potential landslides pose severely threaten to the construction and operation of airports, railways, highways and power stations etc. In order to provide accurate guidance for the landslide investigation, stability analysis and mitigation, the giant landslide is redefined according to landslide volume, depth of slip surface, complexity of landslide mechanisms, and degree of landslide mitigation difficulty, and classified with the typological classification approach based on the twofold attributes of landslide behavior including formation mechanisms and reactivation features. Finally, the threefold particularity of the giant landslide is also summarized, which enables a more effective landslide mitigation design.INTRODUCTIONWith the increase of anthropogenic activities, global climate change and active plate tectonics movement such as continual uplifting of Qinghai-Tibet plateau and strong earthquakes, the occurrence of giant landslides was in ascending trend in southwest China (Huang, 2009), which caused serious destruction, and greatly endangers such engineering construction from safety, time and economic aspects as airports, railways, highways, power stations, etc. Giant landslides have huge scale, complex formation/reactivation mechanisms and mechanical behavior. They may not be identified during the hazard investigation, but may be firstly initiated or reactivated due to the following engineering activities, heavy rainfall or strong earthquakes. Consequently, the landslide mitigation is inevitable and costly. However, it is difficult to control the deformation of giant landslide with lack of a correct understanding of genetic mechanisms (Marui, 2012; Zhang, 2000) and the excessive large sliding forces of the slide blocks calculated by the conventional limit equilibrium method. For instance, the failure of anchored pile wall for the No.102 giant ancient landslide (Zhu et al., 2012) and stabilization measures for the Sidi Rached viaduct landslide(Guemache et al., 2011); four rows of piles had not prevented the occurrence of the No.12 landslide in a high fill slope in the Panzhihua airport (Li et al., 2012)."

"The Quintette Coal Limited property is located in the north east coal area of British Columbia. A basic agreement with the Japanese steel industry was ex ecuted on January 27, 1981 for the sale of 69.5 million tonnes of Quintette metallurgical coal over a 14.5-year period. This contract period can be extended by Jive years by mutual agree ment. Sale agreements have also been signed for the sale of 19.4 million tonnes of oxidized coal over a 15-year period. Work started on site development in the late summer of 1981, and at present, two of the four eventual pits-the McConkey and Frame-are under development. The pits are currently in a pres/ripping phase. These pits are notable for the stripping volumes that have to be removed from relatively small pit areas. in order to provide for the required detailed rapid short-range planning of these pits, engineering will be computerized, as will the truck dispatch system. The mining area lies 21.1 km from the plant site by road and the transport of raw coal LO the plant is by means of a highspeed conveyor system which has a total length of 13.4 km with a vertical drop of 740 m. The surface plant facility was designed on a modularized basis to facilitate maintenance, and is designed to enable the use ofgravity flow ofraw coal and heavy media in the plant to minimize the use of pumps. The construction of the plant and mine site facilities is on-going, and the first coal production is scheduled for early December 1983. Introduction Quintette Coal Limited is a Canadian company incorporated in the province of British Columbia in 1971. Denison Mines Limited is the manager of Quintette's activities. Equity in Quintette Coal Limited is held by several shareholders, with interests as follows: Denison Mines 'Limited, 500Jo; Charbonnages de France International S.A., 120Jo; and Japanese interest, 38%. The project will develop almost 120 million tonnes of coal for marketing during its first 20 years of production. All of the planned production tonnage has been committed to Japanese markets. Most of the coal will be metallurgical grade, and the remainder will be a high-quality thermal coal. The Mcconkey and Frame pits, which will initially provide the mine's production, will commence production in early December 1983 and will, in 1985, reach the full annual production of 5 million tonnes clean metallurgical coal and 1,380,000 tonnes of clean thermal coal."

"IntroductionAN EXCELLENT paper entitled Potash Discoveries in Western Canada (l) was presented to the 1948 Annual Meeting of the C.l.M. by L. Heber Cole, of the Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa. In the intervening three and a half years, the search for oil and gas in Saskatchewan has added considerably to the information available on the occurrence of potash. It is the purpose of this paper to summarize the additional data. For greater clarity, it may be useful, first, to recapitulate some of the highlights of Mr. Cole's paper.Underlying the western plains of Canada there is a large deposit of sodium chloride, believed to be of early Devonian age. Associated with the sodium chloride are certain potash salts, primarily 'sylvinite,' a mechanical mixture of sodium chloride (halite) and potassium chloride (sylvite) crystals. The potash salts, when present, are usually near the top of the salt formation, though in at least one well they were found near the central part of the deposit. Cole reported on some seven wells in Saskatchewan which had encountered appreciable amounts of potash; these were the Ogema, Radville, Davidson Nos. 1 and 2, Prairie Salt Nos. 1 and 2, and Verbata wells. Depth of potash from surface ranged from 7,653 feet in the Radville well to a minimum of 3,466 feet in the Verbata well. Such depths do not compare favourably with those at which the potash is found in mines in the United States, France, and Germany, where about 1,000 feet is the average. The greatest concentration of sylvite encountered was in the Verbata well, where a bed 11 feet thick carried the equivalent of 21.64 per cent K20."

Puisque la technologie existe pour fabriquer du remblai en pâte sans construire une usine coûteuse, il est maintenant possible d?élargir le domaine d?utilisation du remblai en pâte pour y inclure des gisements filoniens où le besoin annuel de remblai est moindre. Dans certains cas, l?utilisation du remblai en pâte pourrait permettre de réaliser d?importantes économies telles que la réduction de la dilution, la stabilité des ouvertures, la récupération d?une plus grande partie du minerai par la réduction de la taille des piliers et l?entreposage de moins de résidus à la surface. L?ampleur des économies est parfois difficile à chiffrer mais il est tout de même important d?en tenir compte lors de la décision d?utiliser du remblai en pâte puisque ce sont souvent ces économies qui seront déterminantes. Différentes méthodes d?extraction avec remblai en pâte appliquées aux mines filoniennes seront présentées. "The South African Mineral Resource Committee (SAMREC), a Working Group of the SAMREC/SAMVAL Committee (SSC), under the joint auspices of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA) developed the SAMREC Code. The Code sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves in South Africa. It is applicable to the reporting of all styles of solid mineralization or economic deposit. However, certain commodities, namely coal and diamonds, have specific additional reporting requirements. The Code does not apply to oil, gas or water."

Property development starts with drilling and building the geological data base. The feasibility cycle includes all stages of evaluating the decision to proceed with mine development: ore reserve calculations; mine planning; and financial projections. Construction includes project management and project accounting systems. Systems required for operation are those needed by personnel at the mine site."

"IntroductionRECENT ADVANCES in geo-chemistry and in •our knowledge •of crystal structure provide a key which enables us to create a systematic picture of the genesis of many ore deposits. This genetic scheme may be used with confidence in assessing certain types of orebodies and may be of some aid in actual exploration, since it affords a rational explanation of the dependence of the composition •of the ore minerals on that of the rock type in which they occur with which they -are •associated. For purposes of the present paper, .the elements chosen are •chromium, vanadium, iron, and titanium. The oxides of all these metals occur in deposits of similar or related type, and it is proposed to show that, for each, the composition of the •ore mineral is related to •the composition of the enclosing :rock, and that one of the principal factors controlling the composition of the ore is the ionic size of its constituent elements.Geochemical PrinciplesThe crystals of the rock-forming silicates and of the magmatic oxide minerals are essentially ionic types. This means that they are composed •of oppositely charged ions such as Mg²+ and 0²-, which are held together by electrostatic attraction. The ions of each element are spherical, with characteristic size known as the ionic radius. Crystals are built up by the packing of these spheres in the most stable arrangement compatible with the size and the size and valence of the ions• involved.Many of the principles governing the formation of ionic crystals are •simple ,and logical."

"IntroductionOne of the methods used when applying the Market Approach to the valuation of a mineral exploration property is known as the Joint Venture Terms Method. The method is particularly useful for the valuation of early-stage exploration properties. Unfortunately, valuators are sometimes imprecise in distinguishing between joint ventures and other types of transactions.At VALMIN '94, Bob Appleyard1 proposed that, if one ignores the time value of money and the probability that the expenditure commitment would be completed, the formula to calculate the value ($V) of a property owned by Party B at the time of the deal would be:$V =$Ex (100-1%)/1% (Formula I)Where $V is the value of the property2Where $E is the expenditure commitment by Party A, andWhere 1% is the percentage property interest to be earned by party A.At PACRIM '99, Mike Lawrence and Graham Dewar3 referred to this method and suggested that there was an ambiguity in the formula proposed by Appleyard in 1994. Mike Lawrence referred to this problem again at VALMIN '014•Lawrence & Dewar suggested that the formulashould be:$V100% =($Ell%) x 100 (Formula 2)Where $V 100% is the value of the entire property,Where $E is the expenditure commitment by Party B, andWhere 1% is the percentage property interest to be earned by Party B.Subsequently, there has been considerable discussion in the AuslMM Bulletin5. In my view, this discussion has touched on a number of useful points, but generally has overlooked one essential element needed for an understanding of the correct application of the N Terms method. That essential element is to understand that there is a material difference between (1) entering into a joint venture arrangement and (2) the purchase of an interest in a property."
