ABSTRACT The inevitable uncertainty in modelling spatial variables decreases as more data become available. This reduction depends on the properties of the variable being modelled. Spatially continuous variables show less uncertainty for a given spacing than erratic variables. A geostatistical simulation based approach is developed to quantify the relationship between uncertainty and data spacing. Reference realizations are sampled to condition additional realizations and quantify uncertainty. The procedure is automated, making it straightforward to consider sensitivity and different geological domains. A case study of the relationship between uncertainty and data spacing for net oil sands thickness data from northern Alberta is presented. _ KEYWORDS Simulation, Sampling,

"Des quartzites trés pars ont été découverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix.On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an mains deux domaines géologique différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le do¬maine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à, grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe métasédimentaires, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite.La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confére des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation.Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent.L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. "AbstractThis paper discusses the methods of handling air in a large asbestos mill presently being completed at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company in Asbestos, Quebec.The mill, being the largest single asbestos producer in the world and capable of handling over 14,000 tons of ore per day, requires vast quantities of air. A minimum of 2,500.000 c.f.m. is required or about 10 tons of air for each ton of ore milled.Short descriptions of the process and systems requiring this air are given, followed by details of the fans and filters which make up the heart of the mill.This 'draw through' system, located on the top or 12th floor, is an automatically .controlled volume-pressure system creating the required suction to draw .air throughout the mill building and its numerous air systems.The dry mechanical method of milling develops enormous quantities of airborne dust and fibre. A section of this paper is devoted to a description of the multiplicity of dust systems within a system to control, filter, and remove this dust.Finally, the paper describes the method of returning the filtered air to the• working floors or to the outside, with some notes on heat, humidity and dust counts.IntroductionGeneralTHE discussions in this paper deal only with operations where air movement is involved. Pegmatite dykes containing lithium minerals and beryl occur dose to the borders of intrusive masses of granitic rock in the Winnipeg River area of Manitoba. Both vertical and flat-lying dykes are present. Most of the pegmatites consist of zones, containing characteristic mineral assemblages, arranged more or Jess parallel to the borders of the dykes. Five important lithium minerals are present; each occurs in a separate zone, but all the lithium-bearing zones are situated toward the centres of the pegmatites. Spodumene is the most abundant and widespread of the lithium minerals and occurs as small crystals intimately intergrown with quartz. Beryl is not an important constituent of the lithium pegmatites, but when .present, occurs outside the lithium zones, toward the margins of the -dykes. Beryl is most common in dykes containing few or no lithium minerals. The mineral assemblage in the beryl zone of the lithium dykes is the same as that of the beryl dykes. The attitude and internal structure, particularly zoning, of the pegmatite dykes, and the texture and assemblages of the constituent minerals, have an important bearing on exploration, development, and mining of these pegmatites, and on the extraction of various mineral products from them.

Introduction The development of uranium deposits is a relatively recent phase of mining in Canada. To date, the only producer of uranium ores on a commercial scale has been the Port Radium mine on Great Bear lake, N.W.T. However, with.-in the past few years intensive prospecting has been carried on throughout Canada and many occurrences of uranium-bearing minerals have been discovered. Eldorado has been active in the search for and the exploration of uranium deposits in Canada for a longer period than any other company and has, therefore, accumulated a considerable fund of information, especially about occurrences in Saskatchewan and in the Northwest Territories along the western fringe of the Precambrian Shield. The Company has also had experience in the underground operation, and in the mining, of uranium ores at Port Radium. During the past year or so many requests have been received from the prospecting and mining fraternity for information and guidance regarding the development of the many new uranium discoveries that have been made in Canada. Assistance by Eldorado is freely given whenever possible and this paper is presented to supplement the private discussions and to provide as wide a distribution as possible of the data acquired by Eldorado.

Of the many organic impurities present in Bayer liquor, sodium oxalate is known to have one of the most detrimental effects on the Bayer process. Because of its limited solubility, it will co-precipitate with gibbsite during the precipitation stage which results in many operational challenges for the refinery. Despite the importance of this phenomenon, the interaction mechanism between gibbsite and sodium oxalate is not well understood. In this study, the growth of sodium oxalate on three main morphologies (random agglomerates, prims and hexagons) of water-washed and caustic-washed gibbsite was observed under synthetic Bayer conditions using in situ optical microscopy. After a short induction period, oxalate started to nucleate on gibbsite crystals, and grew with a needle-shaped morphology which eventually developed into oxalate bundles. In addition, the results indicated that caustic washing was able to partly decompose gibbsite crystals and thus make the gibbsite surface rougher, which provides more potential sites for oxalate nucleation and growth. The growth rate of oxalate crystals on the basal (001) face of water-washed gibbsite was 1.33 µm/min determined by the time-lapse imaging of in situ optical microscope.

Zeballos mining camp is on the west coast of Vancouver island; 195 nautical miles northwest from Victoria.; The spectacularly rich gold-bearing veins that made Zeballos an important; gold camp were found early in 1934. Small pockets of very coarse; gold had been found earlier under large boulders at the mouth of Spud; creek; and in the autumn of 1933 rich gold-quartz float was found near the; mouth of the creek. The rocky beds of the steep creeks entering Spud creek; were searched for its source and as a result the veins on the White Star property; were found. The Goldfield vein on the Spud Valley property was discovered; in 1935; and the No. 1 vein on the Privateer in 1936. In the general; prospecting activity that quickly followed; other veins were found; not; only in Spud creek but in other creeks draining into Zeballos river.

"Rare earth intermetallic compounds are utilized commercially as magnetic and battery materials, electron gun electrodes, etc. Several of these intermetallics will be briefly discussed. There are many other rare earth intermetallic compounds which are not utilized industrially but have unusual properties which are of fundamental interest and may have future technological applications. Several of these materials are discussed as well.INTRODUCTIONTens of thousands of rare earth intermetallic compounds exist, but physical properties (primarily their magnetic behaviors), other than their crystal structures have been measured for only a small percentage of these materials. Among these are the commercially important compounds: Nd2Fe14B, and the SmCo5 – Sm2Co17 family – well known high strength permanent magnets; (Tb0.3Dy0.7)Fe2, Terfenol-D, a giant magnetostrictive material; LaNi5Hx a critical component of the rechargeable Ni metal hydride batteries; and LaB6 an electron emitter. There are, however, many other intermetallic compounds which are not utilized industrially, but none-the-less, exhibit interesting, and sometimes, exotic physical properties which are of fundamental interest and may have some future technological significance. These include: the giant magnetocaloric effect compounds Gd5Si2Ge2 and La(Fe13-xSix)Hy; the RCu and RAg families of ductile intermetallics; the mixed intra-lanthanide (R,R')Al2 compounds in which magnetic transitions disappear and reappear as one R is substituted for by R'; and GdNi which exhibits large dilations along two crystallographic directions and a larger contraction in the third direction at the Curie temperature resulting in zero volume change as GdNi orders magnetically via a second order phase transition.COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT INTERMETALLICSNdFeB Permanent MagnetsThe Nd2Fe14B permanent magnets were discovered in 1984 independently in the USA and Japan. It is a ferromagnet and with proper heat treatment and processing Nd2Fe14B is the strongest near room temperature permanent magnetic material known today. This intermetallic compound is utilized as a permanent magnet in many applications, such as electric motors (e.g. the modern automobile contains up to 35 electric motors), spindles for computer hard disc drives, microphones and speaker magnets for cell phones and other audio equipment, direct drive wind turbines, actuators, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) units. There are two kinds of NdFeB permanent magnets – bonded and sintered. The bonded magnets have a lower magnetic strength than the sintered magnet. The highest strength magnets are obtained by small substitutions of Dy (up to a maximum of 10%) for Nd, because Dy can significantly increase the coercivity and thus the energy product (a measure of the magnetic strength or hardness). The bonded magnets account for about 12% of the NdFeB market (~82 metric kt per year, containing ~20 kt/a of Nd). The NdFeB permanent magnet market is growing at a rate of about 15% per year. (Burzo & Kirchmayr, 1989; Kobayashi & Hirosawa, 2001; Coey, 2011)."

"A variety of reagents are utilized in coal preparation, but aside from performing their desired function relatively little is known about the behavior of these reagents within the processing circuits. Where exactly do reagents go once dosed? In this paper, we present preliminary results of partitioning studies on frother (i.e., MIBC) and collector (i.e., diesel) chemicals commonly used in coal flotation, and examine implications for water management (e.g., in closed-loop systems). Additionally, we discuss the usefulness of such data in predicting environmental transport and fate of chemicals – which is currently a top priority for industry.INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of coal preparation is to upgrade mined coal into more valuable products. Since coal is primarily used as a fuel source for electricity generation, product specifications are typically contracted to minimize unwanted constituents that detract from the overall heat value (e.g., ash and moisture) or that add to environmental pollution or other problems like corrosion at a power plant (e.g., sulfur) (Pitt & Millward, 1979). Failure to meet specifications results in a financial penalty for the coal producer (Szwilski, 1986), and thus preparation processes have evolved to simultaneously optimize recovery of valuable “clean” coal with rejection of mineral matter and moisture. In addition to advancements in equipment and circuitry, development and application of various chemical reagents has dramatically improved the performance of coal preparation processes.Contemporary preparation plants typically include multiple circuits that can be categorized by the size of particles they process: coarse, intermediate, and fine/ultra-fine (Figure 1). Coarse and intermediate circuits generally rely on size classification and gravity separations (e.g., dense-media cyclones), and do not require significant chemical reagents. However, fine and ultra-fine circuits often use froth flotation to separate coal from impurities, which requires chemical additives (Table 1). The primary additives include collectors, which coat the surface of the coal particles to render them (more) hydrophobic and thus more likely to attach to air bubbles and float; and frothers, which aid in the formation and stability of the froth that will accumulate the floated coal particles. Modifiers are also commonly added to flotation circuits to regulate pH in instances where coal or impurity characteristics may change water chemistries (Laskowski, 2001). Following flotation, coagulants and flocculants are often utilized in solid-liquid separations (i.e., dewatering or clarification) for coal products, and for tailings slurries prior to their disposal in impoundments. Coagulants function via double-layer compression1 to bring colloidal particles together, while flocculants promote bridging between the grouped colloids – and the combined result is enhanced sedimentation (Wills, 2006). Defoaming or anti-foaming agents may also be required to avoid fouling of dewatering operations."

Of the twelve known ore zones on the Sunro property, acquired by Cowichan Copper Co., only the "B" and "C" orebodies of the "River Zone" had been explored sufficiently to indicate the grade and tonnage. The "B" zone was selected for initial production. The portion of this orebody above the main adit level was developed for horizontal-ring, longhole mining. Ore from the stope would be scraped directly to the coarse ore bin. The lack of a suitable mill site on surface, as well as the 8,000-ft. tramming distance, led naturally to the installation ground. I N November, 1960, a lease was obtained by Co-wichan Copper Co. Ltd. (N.P.L.) from Sunro Mines Ltd., covering the main ore (River) zone of the Sunro property. A total of twelve zones had been located on the property. Nine of these lay within the leased area. "Hecla Limited’s No. 4 Shaft at the Lucky Friday Mine is the largest capital expenditure in the corporation’s 128-year history and is considered the deepest shaft in the United States. This paper will discuss the project’s history and lessons learned from the initial conceptual design work in 2007 through project commissioning in 2017. Change management was key for the owner, contractors, and vendors in delivering the operational and organizational success on the project. The No. 4 Shaft has extended the life of the Lucky Friday Mine by 21 years to 2039. INTRODUCTION The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Company (Figure 1) is the oldest active (77 years) and deepest mine in the Coeur d’Alene mining district, producing approximately 725 tonnes (800 tons) per day from narrow, vertical, silver, lead, and zinc veins. Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Cut and fill stoping is currently employed at depths to 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the deepest mines in the western hemisphere. No. 4 Shaft is a 5.5-metre (18-foot) diameter, concrete lined circular shaft, constructed as a 1.2 km (3,860 feet) deep winze in the Lucky Friday Mine. The 2.4 m (8 ft.) diameter, double drum, double clutch, Siemag hoist and associated headworks are situated at the 4760 level, top station at 4940 and shaft stations at 5900, 6500, 6580, 7500, 7580, 8300, 8380, 8500, and 8620. Shaft stations reference depth below Silver Shaft top station. The 4 Shaft was designed, constructed and commissioned over ten years, between 2007 and 2017. Basic design work was completed by Nordmin Engineering, followed by detailed design completed by Cementation Canada. Shaft construction was awarded to Cementation USA and lateral development was initiated in early 2008. Over the course of the next nine years, the project was suspended and restarted twice, dealt with the loss of a miner, added scope including shaft depth and mine infrastructure facilities, experienced squeezing ground that required liner replacement, changed excavation section, and dealt with a final alignment that was not within design requirement for verticality. Hecla and Cementation were successful in delivering a facility that provides fully functional access from collar at 4940 level to shaft bottom at the 8620 level. Two active mining levels below the collar, 5900 and 6500 are accessed. In addition, the shaft provides access to the future mining level at 7500, skip loading facility at 7580 level, station and loading pocket cutouts at 8300 and 8380 levels, spill pocket at 8500 level, and shaft bottom pumping facility at 8620 level (Figure 2)."

Minera Sabinas in central Mexico treats a complex sulfide ore containing galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and argentite as valuable minerals, and in some cases important amounts of non-magnetic pyrrhotite. For high pyrrhotite ores, results obtained by selective flotation showed good grades and recoveries in the lead-copper circuit, but a commercial zinc concentrate could not be produced due to the high floatability of pyrrhotite. When this is the case, an alternative method was proposed to produce a bulk concentrate by flotation which is then leached to recover copper and zinc from liquor in a SX-EW circuit. Leaching was conducted in an autoclave in order to study the effect of temperature and pressure, but bioleaching tests were also conducted. Leaching lead-silver residues were treated by cyanidation in order to recover silver values. The results obtained by selective flotation and by bulk flotation with leaching of the bulk concentrate showed that the latter alternative increased zinc recovery by 30 % with similar recoveries of the other metals.

Fine tailings produced in the milling process have traditionally been disposed of in tailings ponds. Attempts have been made to use these fine tailings in backfill, however, to date the majority of backfill operations have utilized only a small percentage of fines. The remaining fines are, therefore, being sent to tailings ponds creating a waste disposal and environmental problem. This disposal practice is even more acute in the gold milling industry where fine grinding, required for value liberation, results in the production of large quantities of fine tailings, of which a large percentage cannot be used in backfill. Through Cold-Bond Tailings Agglomeration (CBTA), these fine tailings can be agglomerated into pellets which can then be used as a coarse aggregate in back-fill. This paper presents the results of using these pellets to create an Agglomerated Tailings Paste Fill (ATPF) made entirely of fine gold mill tailings and cementing binders. Through this process, supplementary imported aggregates such as sand, gravel, rock-chips are not required while still maintaining adequate back fill strength. By using this CBTA technology, fine tailings are diverted from tailings ponds and becomes utilized as a value added resource in the form of aggregates for use in paste fill.

"ACCOMPANYING Alberta's great natural endowments of oil, wheat, scenery, fishing, and hunting is also a generous endowment of geophysical problems to plague the interpreting geophysicist. These problems — by no means unique to Alberta — are sufficiently numerous and outstanding to be of major concern in exploration. Some of them have been adequately solved, others are well on their way to being solved, and still others remain almost completely unsolved. Often a problem readily solvable in one area can be solved only with great difficulty in another. Many are closely allied with the geological conditions and require the best co¬ordinated efforts of the geologist and geophysicist for their solution.It is a fairly general practice to study rather carefully the geophysical characteristics of known producing reefs in order to obtain data on which to base an interpretation of unproven areas. This practice obviously has a very sound basis, for, as discoveries become more and more widespread in the Alberta basin, it is found that the variation' in geological conditions has a marked effect on the seismic results, as would be expected. By carrying this analysis over an area it is possible more and more to anticipate the geophysical picture which should be obtained in connection with reefing under the varying geological conditions. Another phase of this procedure, and one that has received less attention, though it is certainly of importance, is the analysis of the all too numerous failures. A study of these failures may be more fruitful than a study of the successes for it may indicate weaknesses of field procedure, computations, or in¬terpretation not particularly obvious in the discovery areas. These studies must not only include the geophysical characteristics of the observed `anomalies', but should also be coupled with a thorough geological study to ascertain whether some unanticipated geological condition is responsible for the erroneous geophysical interpretation."

This paper summarizes an investigation in which beneficiated ilmenite ore was smelted in a continuous, three-phase, 250 kv.a., open-top electric furnace. Minus %. inch ore was smelted, using the standard method. Fine ore, in the order of minus 14 mesh, was smelted in the briquetted form by the open bath method, and in the unagglomerated form by the cold dry-top method. The latter was shown to be superior. The data obtained .are discussed at some length. During the investigation, slag aver-aging 82.5 per cent Ti02 was produced over a period of 87 hours, the maximum being 85 per cent. Such slag should .be particularly attractive for the production of titanium tetrachloride, from which titaniurn metal is produced. The advantages of using paper-mill bark for producing a furnace charge of low bulk density, as required in cold dry-top smelting, were emphasized.

"This is a panel discussion on the milling experience with large volume flotation machines in Canada. Over the past ten years, the Canadian milling industry has been characterized by treatment of ever increasing tonnages of lower grade ores. In order to treat these ores efficiently, mineral processors have been employing increasingly larger volume flotation machines. In older established mills, standard flotation cells have been replaced by the larger volume models with very apparent savings in mill floor space as noted in the Opemiska copper mill.We are pleased to hear from four mill operators with extensive experience on large volume flotation machines. They are:1. I. E. Wahn, metallurgist with Falconbridge-Manibridge, who will describe their mill experiences with the Tank cell and the Maxwell cell.2. G. M. Hughes, mill superintendent of Sherritt Gordon-Ruttan, will detail recent experience with the Agitair cell.3. J. R. Maxwell, mill superintendent of Opemiska Copper, will report on their Maxwell cell installation and operation.4. A. H. Winckers, superintendent of Development and Technical Control, Sullivan Mill, will present a paper written by H. J. An electric survey from a 'plane flown over the ground is much faster and cheaper than an electric survey carried out on the ground. The results are obtained as continuous recordings that are resolvable into both a depth expression and a conductivity effect, so that the indications are easier to evaluate, as well as to correlate from one flown line to the other. The prospecting technique adopted in our electric airborne surveys may be brie fly described as follows: A loop of many turns of insulated copper cable is fastened around the fuselage of the 'plane and connected to a generator supplying a few ampere alternating current, usually of a frequency less than 1,000 cycles per second. Just as the current in the primary coil of a common transformer will induce current in the secondary coil when shorted, the alternating magnetic field from this primary current now induces alternating current in electric conductors that happen to be located in the vicinity of the path over which the 'plane is flown. This induced secondary current in each conductive section of the ground causes, in turn, an alternating magnetic field, secondary field, which disturbs or dampens the normal alternating magnetic field from the primary loop flown by the 'plane. These secondary fields are then picked up and recorded by the help of detecting solenoids, amplifiers, and recorders carried in the 'plane. By closer study of such a secondary field it is possible to localize the secondary current causing it and, thereby, the conducting body that contains the secondary current. In the 'plane are continuously recorded, besides the amplitude or intensity of the field, also the phase, which is a measure of how much the recorded secondary field is out of step with the primary field.

"This presentation will provide a demonstration of the methodology used in designing a modern shaft and hoisting plant utilizing a review of the challenges faced and solutions delivered for the Elk Creek Superalloy Materials Project (Niobium/Scandium). The development of the design required the review of complex hydrogeological conditions, mine production requirements, demanding capital expenditure (CAPEX) limitations and tight schedules. Through an extensive review of various alternatives to satisfy these constraints, the Nordmin Group (including Nordmin Engineering Ltd.) (Nordmin) was able to define a concept and design that addressed risks to the project, met production requirements, cost and schedule constraints and improved constructability. INTRODUCTION The Elk Creek Project, owned by NioCorp Developments Ltd. (NioCorp) presently, will become Nebraska’s first underground metals mine, built to access the Elk Creek Niobium/Scandium deposit. The development of the design for this facility required the review of challenging hydrogeological conditions, mine production requirements, demanding CAPEX limitations and tight schedules. Through an extensive review of various alternatives to satisfy these constraints, the Nordmin Group was able to define a concept and design that addressed risks to the project, met production requirements, cost and schedule constraints and improved constructability. This paper will review the challenges faced, and solutions arrived at in a demonstration of a methodology used in designing a modern shaft and hoisting plant. THE CHALLENGES Nordmin became involved in the project in 2015, invited by the Feasibility Study Consultant to provide input on estimating and layouts for the new operation. Many of the fundamental decisions regarding mining methodology, water handling and production strategy had been made, and the scope of Nordmin’s involvement was very limited in this first engagement. Following submission of that study in late 2017/early 2018, Nordmin had opportunity to discuss the overall effort, and its many assumptions and challenges, with NioCorp’s project team. The dialogue quickly identified several significant opportunities to improve the project construction schedule and costs along with the mine production profile and operational approach while reducing project risk."

"IntroductionExperience at Eldorado has been gained with a variety of mill feeds. That is, the actual mode of occurrence of the pitchblende varies to such an extent that gravity concentration has at times been decidedly unattractive and at others highly successful. Because of this, the type of ore necessary for economic recovery of pitchblende have become well known. Also, those types which do not lend themselves to gravity concentration have become familiar. In general, it may be said that when the pitchblende occurs free, to a large extent, from sulphides or arsenides of high specific gravity, and when the bulk of the pitchblende is localized rather than disseminated, excellent recoveries, high ratios of concentration, and good grades of concentrates , will result from proper gravity concentration. On the other hand, if the ore contains pitchblende intimately or otherwise mixed with large quantities of arsenides or sulphides, or if the pitchblende is finely disseminated, gravity concentration alone will yield high recoveries only at the expense of very low-grade concentrates and low ratios of concentration.According to Taggart, the ease with which gravity separation may be effected is determined by the value of the following ratio: []It is stated that when the ratio is above 1.75, gravity separation can be expected to be easy. Thus with pure U308 (S.G. over 9) and gangue consisting chiefly of siliceous material, the process can he expected to be entirely successful even when carried on at very fine sizes. Unfortunately, the term pitchblende covers a great diversity of material. Although some of the mineral occurs pure enough to have a specific gravity of about 7, the average is much lower than this and is probably well under 5. Some of the pitchblende particles have a specific gravity so low that gravity concentration fails completely. It may also be said that no degree of grinding will produce free pitchblende of sufficient density from such particles. This, then, represents the most important limitation to the application of gravity separation to pitchblende ores."

The wide range of potential feed materials, process steps, and products in metallurgical facilities means that standard equipment might not be available to adequately meet the project technical and economic needs. Custom designed equipment should be considered only after rigorous research precludes purchasing standard equipment. However, the decision to use custom equipment introduces a new element of risk into the project. To manage the risk, custom equipment design should be developed through the same front end loading (FEL) phases as project development. If more than incremental development of custom equipment is required, appropriate test work or pilot trials are required to test key uncertainties. Important activities during custom equipment design include maintaining clearly defined performance objectives, conducting appropriate reviews, carefully crafting commercial and intellectual property agreements with design and fabrication partners, and assembling a multidisciplinary team with sufficient development expertise.
