Introduction Avital factor in the success of any coal mining operation is the method of roof support employed. A coal seam in? place has been described as the filling in a geological sandwich and the process of mining as the art of snatching the filling from the midst of the sandwich. The difficulty of this task can be appreciated -in the realization of the tremendous weight bearing on a coal seam due to overlying strata; a weight that can exert pressures of several thousand pounds per square inch. Over the years that mining has been carried on, methods have been evolved by arduous trial and error, making possible the successful extraction of billions of tons of coal. However, these time-proven methods are not enough. The constant demand for faster and cheaper production, the necessity of mining under increasingly difficult conditions, and the requirement for higher standards of safety, call for ever better and more efficient roof support. A recent and very promising development in answer to this need is that of Roof Bolting. Roof Support in General Before proceeding to the subject proper, a brief discussion of the older roof support methods is of value in illuminating the difficulties involved and the problems to be solved.

Shotcrete is a practical and economical support system in many Canadian underground mines. Although shotcrete technology has gained acceptance in the mining industry, there are some problems that have emerged with respect to quality assessment and thickness measurement of the liner. This paper presents recent tests performed with miniature seismic reflection technology (MSR) developed and patented at McGill University primarily for thickness measurement of this heterogeneous liner. MSR is also capable of providing information regarding the quality of shotcrete in terms of its mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. Work was performed on site in an underground mine in Ontario, Canada. This paper also presents the results from laboratory tests performed on fiber-reinforced and non-reinforced shotcrete panels that were used to assess the P-wave velocity in both materials. The results of these tests were used in a second site investigation. The NDT thickness measurements showed good agreement with direct thickness measurement such as coring. In addition, the MSR technology has the advantage of being more accurate and more affordable compared to other non-destructive testing (NDT) systems in the market.

"Colombian nickel laterites have historically been processed by pyrometallurgy. However, due to the depletion in ore grades, alternative processes are required. Hydrometallurgical processes, such as pressure acid leaching, have been proposed as alternatives to extract nickel from deposits with suitable characteristics. Such a leaching process requires high concentrations of acid to achieve acceptable extractions, and is not selective. In this study, an alternative aqueous alkaline glycine system has been employed to evaluate the leaching behaviour of a Colombian nickel laterite which contains 1.15% Ni, 0.12% Co and 41.1% Fe. Additionally, the effect of the addition of chloride ions, the use of a reducing agent and the application of a pre-treatment to improve the extraction of nickel were evaluated. Extractions of 4.63% Ni, 42.16% Co and 0.33% Fe were obtained using a 1M solution of glycine at pH 9. In addition, an increase in nickel extraction from 4.63% to 25.68% was achieved by applying a pre-treatment to the sample. The results show that even though nickel dissolution was much slower than in acid leaching, it was selective over other metals such as iron, proving the proposed method to have potential as a process for the extraction of nickel from Colombian laterites.INTRODUCTION Before 2010, most of the industrial operations used pyrometallurgical processes for the extraction of nickel, mainly in saprolitic regions of deposits, with greater contents of the metal. Nevertheless, due to the gradual depletion of such deposits, different hydrometallurgical processes have been studied as alternatives to process those nickel laterites with low grade and those which present problems of refractoriness due to the presence of acid consuming materials (McDonald & Whittington, 2008; Oxley & Barcza, 2013; Wang et al., 2012). However, such leaching processes require high concentrations of acid to achieve acceptable extractions and they are not selective. Facing lateritic nickel ore deposits containing high levels of acid consuming materials, an alkaline leaching medium becomes an advantageous alternative over acidic media, due to the increase in selectivity and decreased corrosiveness and reagent consumption (Tanda, Eksteen, & Oraby, 2017). Unlike conventional acidic reagents used for metal recovery, alkaline reagents can selectively dissolve the desired metal, leaving in the solid residue other elements such as iron, magnesium and aluminum, which are problematic in subsequent stages of metals separation and recovery. Furthermore, there are no serious corrosion problems associated with alkaline leaching, even at higher reagent concentrations, or at elevated temperature and pressure (Ntumba Malenga, Mulaba-Bafubiandi, & Nheta, 2015)."

"This paper discusses the aspects of tracking cutters related to the computer-aided design of shearer drums. A comprehensive computer analysis of drum dynamic parameters for multi-tracking tool arrangement is not presently available, as the current computer programs mainly consider the aspects of single tracking. Despite the fact that the single-tracking arrangement is recommended for efficient cutting, some major drum manufacturers have been seen to persistently adhere to multi-tracking, probably due to a lack of information. Further studies in this field are believed to contribute greatly to the current understanding of the computer-aided design of shearer drums.A number of laboratory simulation trials and long-term underground investigations were carried out in detail on tracking cutter arrangement, and an equation required for a computer program was derived. The results obtained from computer assessment of dynamic parameters for drums with multi-tracking arrangement were found to be in accordance with those of the underground trials, indicating the validity of the equations. The procedure adopted for the computer appraisal of the shearer drums designed with a multi-tracking concept, as described in this study, is therefore recommended to be considered in the currently employed computer programs."

Although heap bioleaching has been recognized as an economic alternative for treating low grade mineral ores, the underlying physical, chemical and biological processes involved are complex. A detailed investigation into the dynamics of heap bioleaching processes has provided much insight into the underlying complexities, and has led to the development of a sophisticated modelling tool - HeapSim. This tool can be of great help in the design and operation of heap bioleaching processes. In this paper, the mathematical model implemented in HeapSim is examined. The model takes into account mineral kinetics, particle level effects, bacterial growth, oxidation and adsorption, gas absorption, pore diffusion, bulk advection, gas balance and heat conservation. Three case studies where the model has been applied are briefly discussed. Agitation requirements in oxidation autoclaves can vary widely depending on the mineralogy of the feed material and the specific process selected. Before selecting an agitation system it is important that the client specify the desired throughput, mineralogy, chemistry, kinetics, compartments, overall retention time, and the desired oxygen utilization. In selecting the agitation system, the factors mentioned above as well as oxygen solubility, oxygen mass transfer coefficients, and specific power are evaluated. Much research effort has been directed toward open tank systems for fermentation and oxidation processes. However, for high pressure autoclave oxidation processes little information is available. In this review the author's experience in the autoclave industry and some of the available literature are utilized to compare the installed power per unit volume with some of the methods proposed for open tank oxidation. Equations that appear to give results close to that experienced in the industry have been identified. Further work is required in this area to develop a higher degree of confidence in the ability to predict the power required for any given case.

The paper deals with studying the impact of structural properties and anodizing of surface on the corrosion properties of extruded rods from commercial aluminium alloys: AA6082, AA6262, AA6012, AA2007 and new lead-free aluminium alloys AA6023, AA2015 and AA2111B. Samples were exposed to the corrosive atmosphere NSS, AASS in the chamber by EN ISO 9227. Surface of samples were either in the original state or anodizing by selected mode. The depth of corrosion attack and the form of corrosion attack are evaluated depending on the type of alloy, the metallurgical condition and surface treatment of the samples.

"HistoryThe Nanisivik mine began operation in October 1976 as the world's most northerly metal mine and the first permanent industrial project in the Canadian High Arctic. Located 700 km north of the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island's Strathcona Sound, exploration by Texasgulf Inc. between 1957 and 1970 had outlined the ore deposit. In 1974, Nanisivik Mines Ltd. was formed with Mineral Resources International, the Government of Canada, Metallgesellschaft and Billiton being shareholders, and Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd. providing project management. In 1996, Breakwater Resources purchased the mine from Alberta Energy Corporation Limited which had recently acquired the assets of then owners Conwest Exploration Ltd.Ore DepositThe main ore deposit is very flat, approximately 80 m in width and varying in thickness from 3 m to 16 m. The length of the deposit is approximately 3000 m with satellite zones located on the perimeter of the main zone. The economic mineralization is sphalerite with minor galena and silver. The sphalerite and galena are coarse grained and associated with pyrite as the main gangue component with minor inclusions pf dolomite and calcite within the deposit. The deposit being hosted in a permafi·ost environment creates a number of challenges. Dry drilling is employed in room and pillar production drilling. The permafrost aids in the stability of both the pillars and the back."

"Abstract - Gold mineralization in the Main Reef Complex at Sheba Gold Mine is hosted within shear zones in a sequence of shales and greywackes of the Fig Tree Group. Competency contrasts between these rocks and a steeply dipping chert unit provided a locus for the development of right lateral steeply dipping shear zones. A set of flatter dipping shear fractures crosscut these zones with their intersections defining a system of en échelon ore shoots.Mineralization is both of vein type and disseminated strata-controlled replacement type. The latter occurs mainly within the wall rocks to the shear zones. Arsenopyrite and pyrite are the major sulfides, with arsenopyrite being confined largely to greywacke beds and pyrite to the more iron-rich shale units. Gold was introduced, together with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and early arsenopyrite, toward the end stages of a first pyrite phase. The mineralizing fluids were introduced along dilated cleavage planes and, emanating from these, produced a series of replacement fronts. Mineralization was syntectonic to late tectonic and occurred under conditions of progressive deformation, resulting in sulfides which are concentrated in the hinges of shear-related folds and semi­ massive sulfides within tension fractures which are folded, attenuated and fractured .An analysis of the structures shows a sequence of events in which an initial ductile simple-shear event with a steep sense of movement was succeeded by a more brittle strike-slip event. Mineralization is temporally related to the latter. This evolution in structural style was probably related to reactivation of the Sheba Fault as a transcurrent fault during emplacement of large granitoid bodies."

Waste rock extracted from a mine is typically stored nearby on the surface. Such waste rock piles must be designed to ensure their geotechnical and geochemical stability during the mine operation and after closure. The optimal construction of a pile requires detailed planning. Deposition should involve benches of limited height to control the global slope angle, based on the long term factor of safety. It can also be advantageous to compact the top of each bench and to give the surface an outward inclination to control water flow by limiting infiltration and favoring lateral diversion. When part of the waste rock contains reactive minerals, it is also deemed necessary to use selective placement with the non-reactive portion to prevent direct exposure to natural conditions. The construction must be well documented, and include data from the monitoring program. These and related aspects are presented and discussed in the paper.

"This paper presents the learning from Alcoa Po9os de Caldas Smelter in Brazil, after several energy restrictions resulting from the failures of three rectifier units at its power switchyard. Starting on December 27th, fuses and diodes failed in three rectifier units of Potline #1, causing a long and dangerous power interruption. Even after current was reestablished, amperage was only 70% of the line target leading to a bath freezing process that lasted for around 48 hours. The process engineering team played with several potroom parameters as pot resistance, bath and metal levels, alumina feeding and bath chemistry in an attempt to minimize impact on the potline metal output and energy consumption. As it will be illustrated, the first battle was to keep the pots running on a ""survival"" approach. After that, several changes took place on the procedures used to run at reduced current which were considered rather successful. Finally, some recommendations will be given to foresee and prevent transformers and rectifiers from undesirable failures."

This paper presents a case study in which a slope failure was observed on the west wall of the LAB Chrysotile mine in the vicinity of the main ramp in January 2010. Airborne LiDAR results were used to evaluate slope geometry before and after the failure occurred. Back analysis of the failure was performed to assess rock mass properties at the slope scale using various numerical techniques: limit equilibrium, finite elements and fracture networks. The various approaches correlated well with field observations.

Until recently, the approach to the problem of treating complex ores bas been to produce, insofar as is possible, mono-metal concentrates which are treated in traditional zinc, lead and copper smelting circuits, with the residues and by-products from some of these circuits being retreated for the recovery of contained values either by a separate residue treatment process or along with the primary feed to the appropriate circuit. The continued development of the Imperial Smelting Process, with its ability to treat poly-metal concentrates, calls for a re-examination of the traditional approach to this problem, and this the paper attempts to do. A survey of recent progress in the technical development of the process is made and a summary of current operational performance is included.

"With the narrow vein structure of Nova Scotia gold deposits, selective mining is rarely possible and mill heads will be too low (below 0.10 oz per ton of gold) to support a conventional mill of up to 1000 ton per day capacity at present gold prices. The recent operation of a small 100 t.p.d. mill at Cochrane Hill using fine grinding - leaching - filtration supported this assertion. Milling costs exceeded $25.00/ton of feed mainly due to high capital, labour and maintenance costs.Accordingly, since 1981, efforts have been directed towards the development of a cheap gold extraction process in terms of both capital and operating costs. The main criteria is to produce gold below US $200 per oz including all administration, mining and process stages. This paper describes such a process development for Cochrane Hill. LOCATION AND HISTORY OF THE PROPERTYThe Cochrane Hill property is located about 8 miles North of Sherbrooke, N.S. on highway No. 7. Sherbrooke is about 180 miles east of Halifax. Gold was originally discovered at Cochrane Hill in the 1860's. Early work consisted of trenching. In the 1930's a small shaft was sunk to about 80 feet and some tonnage treated using a stamp mill with gravity concentration of gold.Northumberland Mines Ltd. acquired a 70% interest in the property in 1977. Subsequent drilling indicated a potential zone of gold mineralization with a drill-indicated tonnage of one million tons having a grade of 0.07 ounces per ton of gold (all high assays cut to 1 oz) down to a depth of 300 feet recoverable by open pit mining methods. In broad terms, the goldbearing zone is about 50 feet wide and 800 feet long and dips at about 70°."

Methods for arsenic compound removal from aqueous solutions include processes such as: coagulation, adsorption, membrane techniques, electrochemical and biotechnology techniques. Advanced oxidation using both UV radiation and strong oxidizing agents such as ozone and hydrogen peroxide may also decompose these compounds. It is known that effluents from metallurgical processes contain inorganic arsenic compounds in addition to the organic compounds such as: dimethylarsinic acid and phenylarsonic acid. This paper presents the conditions that lead to the formation of deposits containing mainly arsenic, such as pH, the wavelength of the radiation and the type of oxidant, for this type of effluent.

"The current investigation concerns the removal of arsenic from waste waters using ion-exchange resin and activated carbon as sorption media. Use of certain weak and strong base anion exchange resins permits the removal of arsenic. Arsenic may be loaded on the weak base resin in the pH range of 2 to 3 and on the strong base resin above pH 5. The elution of arsenic is successfully achieved using 0.5 M NaCl or a mixture of NaCl and NaOH. The activated carbon investigated was less effective on loading arsenic, but the arsenic loaded was easily eluted by simple pH adjustments."

The paper focuses on actions aiming at improvement of work safety in mines, particularly in those extracting hard coal, taking into account the characteristics of natural hazards in Polish underground mining and the reasons of mining disasters connected with those hazards. It refers to conclusions addressed to scientific and research centres, drawn during last decade by Commissions appointed by the President of the State Mining Authority in order to investigate reasons and circumstances of incidents, which till now, could not have been accomplished because of financial reasons. Furthermore, the paper presents basic assumptions of the Strategic Research Project Improvement of work safety in mines, announced by the National Centre for Research and Development at State Mining Authority?s President request.

"INTRODUCTIONWestern Mines' copper-lead-zinc operations are located in Strathcona Provincial Park, near the geographic centre of Vancouver Island. This park includes Buttle Lake, which flows into the Campbell River water system. The latter provides domestic water for the Town of Campbell River, approximately fifty-eight miles from the mine site.Operation of the concentrator commenced in December 1966, at which time the tailings were discharged into a small tailings pond near the plant. On May 8, 1967 Permit No. 185 was granted to the company, allowing discharge of the tailings, through a submerged outfall, to the bottom of Buttle Lake.Needless to say, the concept of operating a mine within a park, and the discharge of tailings into Buttle Lake generated considerable controversy. However, this has all but been eliminated over the years by the proven effectiveness of Western Mines' pollution control program. In 1973 this program was further upgraded with the addition of an alkaline chlorination plant. Effluent treatment by this method became necessary as a result of process modifications, and has been effective in maintaining the levels of characteristics in the tailings within the ever increasing pollution control requirements imposed on the industry."

"Two continuous coal zones occurring in a 2500f t (762 m) thick section of the Upper Carboniferous Pictou Group (Westphalian C and D) have been encountered in five offshore wells drilled f or oil and gas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They correlate, by means of fossil spores, with thick coals of the Mabou and Inverness coalfields situated at the eastern margin of the Basin. Therefore, the presence of a large submarine coalfield of at least 18000 sq mi. (46 620 km'] is indicated. This compares with an estimated size of 14 000 sq mi. (36260 km' ) for the Sydney Coal Basin.Accessibility is provided only by the small onshore parts of the Mabou and Inverness fields, because farther offshore the coals lie too deep to be mined (below 4 OOO f t ([ 219 m)).Two near-shore coal exploration wells indicate that at Mabou Mines the younger Inverness coals occur at a mineable depth to at least 5 km from land. A structure contour map of this area shows a reserve of 125 million tons in two Inverness equivalent seams that are 8.5 ft (2.6 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick. The Mabou coals, however, reach too great a depth close to shore to possess mineable resources.A structure contour map of the Inverness submarine area, based on mine data and one off shore seismic profile, indicates inferred mineable resources of 160 million tons, in two seams that are 7ft (2.1 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick . A detailed deep seismic survey will be necessary to substantiate the structure and resource estimates"",Maceral and coal quality percentage diagrams of five column samples of these seams (the 7 Foot and 13 Foot Seams of Inverness Equivalents) show a bright banded coal, high in reactive macerals, which will produce a weak coke unsuitable f or metallurgical purposes. A thermal coal with a rank of H. V. ""B"" Bituminous (0.64% Ro) is present, averaging 12000 btu llb (6 660 kcai/kg), 10% ash and 6% sulphur, of which 60 to 80% is derived from pyrite.Microlithotype profiles of the major Mabou and Inverness coals show characteristic successions that can be used f or seam identification and proved valuable f or structural interpretations.The time of faulting in the major fracture zone on the eastern margin of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Basin has been deduced from coal rank variations. Since the last CIM Zinc and Lead Conference ten years ago, significant technical and market forces have influenced how these metals are used, and the geographic distribution of their uses. Unprecedented price fluctuations have opened competitiveness issues, while the rapid growth of the Chinese market has created challenges both inside and outside China. Recent technical developments in battery energy storage, coatings, castings and chemical applications of lead and zinc will be reviewed together with the influence of these trends on end use markets.
