The main direction of research was the application of autoclave technology for the flotation concentrates or biooxidation feedstocks. The industry modernization also expects the possibility of increasing the yield of the flotation concentrate, to allow an increase in gold extraction in flotation circuit. This paper provides brief description of results obtained for concentrates with the yield of 4 and 8%, as well as corresponding biooxidation feedstocks. Technological efficiency of autoclave oxidation is shown for both concentrates and biooxidation feedstocks. The process has been evaluated on a laboratory and a continuous pilot plant scale. Gold extractions from POX discharge are ranging from 94-97% for each product, with only 5-7 kg/t cyanide consumed.

"THE copper smelting operation of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, generates a gas flow of 350,000 c.f.m. at n.t.p. This gas stream passes to atmosphere through a 20-foot diameter by 250-foot brick stack, carrying with it an appreciable dust burden in the form of metallic oxide fumes. The flow constituents during the period 1952 and 1953 and •before gas filtration was included in the treatment scheme are shown in Table I. This paper describes the gas filtration treatment which was installed in 1957, using glass cloth media to recover this dust burden, and discusses the associated problem as its treatment for recovery of zinc and cadmium.The metallurgical details associated with the problem are illustrated by a description of the material flow sequence of the Company's hydrometallurgical zinc plant and copper smelter. In this ore processing complex, the zinc plant and copper smelter form an integrated unit within which intermediate zincrich products of each operation enter the treatment circuit of the other."

The following guidelines have been recommended by the Diamond Exploration Best Practices Committee established by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. These guidelines are applicable to public companies and their consultants reporting diamond exploration results. In respect of these guidelines, Diamond Exploration Results are results derived from the initial activities undertaken to investigate a diamond bearing prospect or deposit, to generate tonnage, grade and value estimates that cannot be classified as a Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve. They do not address the earlier stage reporting of geophysical, geochemical or kimberlite indicator mineral results. Public reports of Diamond Exploration Results relating to mineralization not classified as Mineral Resource or Mineral Reserve must address the confidence limits of the result and contain sufficient information to allow a considered and balanced judgement of the significance of the results. The objective of these guidelines is to assist public companies and consultants in making appropriate disclosure of diamond exploration results by reporting in a manner which is: ??Uniform within the diamond exploration industry; ??Consistent with reporting from other industry sectors; ??Comprehensive; ??Unambiguous. The guidelines are not prescriptive. Materiality is the overriding principle that determines the information that should be disclosed. However, where a company or consultant deviates from the guidelines, the disclosure or technical report should state the extent to which the guidelines have not been followed, and the reasons for the deviation. The guidelines do not in any way replace jurisdictional reporting requirements (For example, the requirement for Canadian reporting issuers to comply with Canadian Securities Administrators National Instrument 43-101 by having technical disclosure endorsed by a Qualified Person as defined in that legislation).

A newly developed computational fluid dynamics model based on a multi-phase particle simulation is presented for predicting the entrainment behavior of liquid metal into slag due to rising single bubble. By comparing results calculated using this model against experimental data, it was found that the transient behavior of bubbles and the two immiscible liquids can be accurately estimated by this method. The rupturing of the thin water film surrounding the bubble was less reliably predicted, but this 3-dimensional unsteady numerical model still nevertheless provides valuable new information for directly predicting the change in the liquid-liquid interface over time. This model predicted the Young-Laplace pressure, and the interface shape was simulated with volume conservation using this model as opposed to the conventional particle method. This simulation model can calculate both of dispersed phase and continuous phase seamlessly.

"Block caving is the preferred underground mining method to profitably extract massive, low-grade orebodies; however, lack of cave access inhibits understanding the rockmass response to mining, which is needed for safer, more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualization (VRSV) is an alternative method for understanding complex cave behaviour, by providing virtual access to the cave. A customized VRSV module was developed at UNSW Australia to investigate rockmass response to undercut developments at a case-study block caving operation. Time/sequence effects are investigated in rockmass response to blasting, which is an important factor in hard-rock mines.RÉSUMÉ La méthode d’extraction souterraine par blocs foudroyés est la méthode préférentielle pour extraire rentablement des gisements massifs à faible teneur. Toutefois, le manque d’accès à la chambre restreint la compréhension de la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’exploitation, ce qui est nécessaire pour obtenir des opérations plus sécuritaires et plus productives. La combinaison de grands ensembles de données de multiples sources avec la visualisation scientifique par réalité virtuelle (VRSV) constitue un autre moyen de comprendre le comportement complexe de la chambre en fournissant un accès virtuel à la chambre. Un module de VRSV sur mesure a été développé à l’Université de Nouvelles-Galles du Sud (UNSW) en Australie afin d’étudier, dans une étude de cas d’une exploitation par blocs foudroyés, la réponse de la masse rocheuse aux développements de galeries de sous-cavage. Between 1993 and 2003, a series of AG and SAG mill pilot plant trials were conducted using Hardinge Ical pilot plant scale SAG mills on numerous ore samples and ranging across a wide variety of operating conditions. The data from these tests were used to evaluate the design of SAG and AG mill circuits for over a dozen projects, of which about half were eventually constructed and commissioned. The data were also used in the development of SAG mill modelling, scale-up and simulation procedures by several consultants who had access to part of the data set. Recently, we have had the opportunity to bring this data together and further analyse the consolidated dataset. This paper reports on the outcomes of this analysis that has identified the impacts of different AG/SAG circuit flowsheets and operating conditions on energy efficiency and operating cost.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. The origin and limitations of the conventional and empirical equation for the interpretation of the results of back pressure tests on gas wells are discussed. Difficulties in data interpretation arise from many causes, including Jack of flow stabilization, uncertainties in connection with the friction calculation, and the effect of turbulence near the sand face in the reservoir. A procedure is developed to ac-count for the turbulence effect. This is based upon the theoretical equation for laminar steady state flow and current knowledge of turbulent steady state flow. The procedure involves the expression of the equation for combined laminar-turbulent steady state flow in terms of a turbulence contribution factor. This factor. is shown to be dependent mainly upon the flow rate per unit of pay thickness and the reservoir permeability. The method of interpretation permits the use of judgment based upon the theory and present day under-standing of laminar-turbulent flow and is considered an improved method

Back in 1995, Air Liquide and Union Minière presented a joint paper at the Copper 95 – Cobre 95 Conference in Santiago, Chile, describing the first full scale plant trials of shrouded sonic injection in a Hoboken converter at the Hoboken smelter in Belgium. Almost a quarter of a century later, the technology known as ALSI, or Air Liquide Shrouded Injection, has been tested or commercially implemented in several copper and nickel smelters. Despite these successes, the copper industry did not adopt it widely in the same manner the steel industry adopted the Savard-Lee tuyere in the 1970s and beyond, not even in the way the lead industry adopted it with the Queneau-Schuhmann-Lurgi, or QSL, process. The development and implementation of bottom-blowing smelting and converting technologies in China in the last ten years, however, changed the industry’s perception that high- and ultra-high oxygen injection in copper smelting and converting was indeed possible under specific process conditions. In this paper, I retrace the key learnings of my journey with sonic injection over the twenty five years from my humble beginnings in my early years with Air Liquide, through plant trials and technology implementation in the late 1990s and into the first decade of the new millennium, and ultimately, to the most conclusive proof that the sonic injection design methodology I established is valid, and the calculation tools I developed are accurate. I conclude by sharing my thoughts about whether the deployment of the Savard and Lee legacy within the nonferrous industry was just a pipe dream or whether it will become a reality. INTRODUCTION In the context of lower quality ores and changing economic markets, copper smelters need to continuously innovate and improve to remain competitive and respect their corporate social responsibility engagements. One avenue towards this business, social, and environmental goal is to increase process intensity while lowering fossil fuel consumption to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reducing process off-gas volumes to better capture As and SO2–laden emissions. I believe high oxygen sonic injection for submerged tuyere copper bath smelting and converting is one technology that can help smelters achieve that goal of higher business, social, and environmental performance. Twenty five years ago, when I discovered that the Savard-Lee tuyere had revolutionized the steel industry (Savard & Lee, 1966; Knuppel, Brotzmann, Fassbieder, Savard, & Lee, 1972), I had a dream — or was it a vision? — that within the first decade of the new millennium, modern copper smelters operating submerged tuyere bath smelting and converting vessels will have implemented high oxygen sonic injection and will be reaping the financial and environmental benefits that the steel industry enjoyed in the 1970s. As we approach the end of the second decade of the new millennium, I have to admit that my dream has been all but shattered as the majority of copper bath smelting and converting vessels today continue to operate under bubbling regime conditions. This mode of operation is archaic, still requires tuyere punching and blows at inherently low enrichment levels, particularly in converting, producing large volumes of process off-gases. Under such operating conditions, regulations and emission quotas for As, SO2, and particulate matter oblige smelters to use not just primary or secondary hoods, but sometimes even tertiary hoods. I vividly recall being told, fifteen or twenty years ago when visiting smelters to promote the application of the Savard-Lee tuyere in nonferrous processes, that implementing sonic injection was not economically viable due to the high cost of compressing air and oxygen. Some of the smelters I visited back then have since mandated their engineering partners to design and build secondary or even tertiary hoods. I cannot fathom how secondary and particularly tertiary hoods, with all of their auxiliary equipment and added ducting, could be more economically viable than purchasing and installing a few compressors, expanding the pipeline network for compressed air and oxygen, and installing a new control valve train to feed sonic tuyeres. Besides, adding hoods does not address the problem of As and SO2-laden fugitive emissions at its source but merely provides a costly mitigation for it by capturing larger volumes of process off-gases rather than reducing these large volumes in the first place. Moreover, hooding does not reduce energy consumption nor does it increase process intensity, two aspects that I believe are critical for smelters to remain competitive and sustainable in a deeply changing market environment.

An account is given of investigations into the application of two neutron methods to the on-line analysis of slurries. One deals with the application of the neutron moisture gauge principle to the determination of the water content of iron oxide slurries, and the other with the application of gamma radiation from thermal-neutron-capture to the determination of the composition of aqueous slurries of iron oxide, copper oxide, zinc oxide and sulphur. Linear relationships were found between the composition of the slurry and the neutron count-rate in the first study, and between the slurry composition and the prompt-gamma-ray count-rate in the second study. A mathematical relationship has also been developed which relates changes in the prompt-gamma-ray counts from hydrogen to changes in slurry composition.

ABSTRACT Electricity production by the Electricity Supply Commission of South Africa (Eskom) is the most important beneficiation process for South African coal. As one of the world’s lowest cost producers, energy-intensive industries such as ferroalloys and aluminium were introduced. However the poor were neglected. The white paper on energy policy (Department of Minerals and Energy, 1998) sought to redress this. Also, chasing economic growth to generate jobs resulted in high electricity demand and interruptions. Lifespan estimates of South African coal reserves based upon peak theory vary widely. Approaching peak, coal production in the future will be more expensive and, thus, contribute to more expensive electricity, which could inhibit industrial development unless South Africans work smarter.

"Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd. operate the Adams mine at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, where they mine approximately 4,000,000 tons of extremely hard iron-formation and 3,500,000 tons of volcanic waste rock annually in order to produce 1,100,000 tons of iron pellets. This paper will discuss the maintenance of the four Model 1600 P & H shovels and the two 50-R drills used to obtain this production. The chief maintenance problems at the mine are due to the hard, abrasive ore and the cold winter weather."

Fluorspar, in addition to its familiar uses as a metallurgical flux and as a source of the electrolyte for aluminum production, has become important as an essential raw material in the rapidly growing fluorine chemical industry. The unique ability of fluorine to react and form compounds with al-most all other chemicals has made it one of the important elements in modern chemistry. Research and development over the past thirty years have resulted in a current annual production of fluorine chemicals that is both technically and economically important to industry. Because many of these chemicals and products are relatively new, and most have properties that are not duplicated by other materials, the present uses are expanding rapidly and new applications are being reported continually. Fluorspar, the only immediate and practical source of fluorine, is therefore an important mineral. This fact has been recognized in major industrial areas such as the United States and Western Europe, but has received little attention in Canada.

When introducing digital training technology a practical approach helps address cultural concerns.  Solutions to help create acceptance are discussed.  Resistance to change may be deeply rooted in traditional mine training personnel.  Traditional training staff members may consider themselves less digitally-savvy and resist technological methods available to them. A transitional approach intended to help mitigate or resolve resistance is presented as a continuous improvement pathway toward full adoption.  This presentation contends every mine should welcome the benefit of a digitally connected critical enabler.  The adoption of a digitally savvy learning centre is often viewed a disrupter to existing practice.  Given a commitment-driven learning centre model, technology offers the opportunity to transition from a compliance-based training model to one of competence.  Learning and Development practitioners should welcome the latest advances in neuroscience, Bloom’s taxonomy of learning model, and principles which guide mine safety training as outlined by the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources at the University of Arizona. By employing digital applications to include animation, game-based simulations and immersive Virtual Reality (VR) these technologies create a viable digitally-savvy learning centre. We will outline the ingredients of a digitally enabled, or VR, Learning Centre to offer some observed benefits, successes, and potential short-comings. Much excitement in the industry surrounds implementation of simulation and/or VR headset training.  Given fair consideration of these as a ‘fit-for-purpose’ solution we examine the paradigm shift required to create real results for on-the-job learning.  Interim steps may be needed to meet the cultural transformation.   Simpler forms of VR, in the form of 3D models and VR environments as displayed on a large interactive touch screen, can serve to bridge this challenge and address a group learning environment. Features of the interactive 3D technology and ease of adoption are presented.  Usage of the touch screen is similar to that of a smart phone. It may be implemented as an obvious transitional tool.  To help describe merits of the interactive touch screen the presentation points out these sample underground and surface mine training applications. There are 3-D simulations such as ventilation, emergency response, support installation, and mine cycle and activity scheduling programs. These applications offer the ability to conduct entry examinations, complete digital pre-use checklists, and perform planned task observations in the virtual world of work. The tool may be used to teach the flow of hydraulics and do fault-finding on machinery such as loaders and dump trucks. Learners may navigate in a virtual mining environment to identify hazards, detect and assess abnormal ground conditions, address poor design features, and alleviate traffic constraints. It is possible to use connected physical controls to navigate machinery in the virtual environment. We conclude the presentation with a “compare and contrast” approach to cite potential cultural benefits by adopting a transitional method.

"Abstract-The Voisey’s Bay Ni-Cu-Co deposit was discovered in late 1994 as the result of prospecting initiated in the summer of 1993. By July 1995, proven mineable reserves were 31.7 x 106 tonnes grading 2.83% Ni, 1.68% Cu and 0.12% Co, and current total resources in all categories are quoted to be in the order of 150 X 106 tonnes. The deposit is associated with a body of troctolite belonging to the Nain Anorthosite (1.35 Ga - 1.29 Ga) suite, which was emplaced across the boundary between the Proterozoic "Rae" Province to the west and Archean "Nain" Province to the east.The deposit can be described in terms of three geological settings. The "Ovoid" is a 600 m long by 350 m wide by 100 m deep lens of massive sulfide, covered by 10 m to 20 m of glacial overburden, and separated from the underlying country rock quartz-plagioclase-biotite gneiss by a breccia of gneissic fragments in troctolite known as the Basal Breccia Sequence. To the west of the Ovoid lies the "Western Extension", comprising disseminated and massive sulfides in a north-dipping sheet of troctolite which ranges from upper unmineralized troctolite down through troctolite with increasing amounts of sulfide (up to 50%), to massive sulfide (in some places only), and then to Basal Breccia Sequence. East of the Ovoid, the troctolite sheet broadens out into a troctolite intrusion, within which occurs the "Eastern Deeps", a zone of massive and disseminated sulfide up to 100 m thick that is currently being explored. The mineralization of the Eastern Deeps lies along the line of intersection of a feeder sheet with the base of the intrusion. The current interpretation is that the three geological environments represent different erosional levels through a single mineralized intrusion. In this model, the deepest erosional level lies to the west and exposes the feeder to surface, whereas the Ovoid represents the base of the intrusion at surface, and the Eastern Deeps the base of the intrusion overlain by 600 m to 900 m of troctolite. Sulfides and gneissic fragments were brought up by magma flowing quickly through the feeder, and settled out where the flow rate decreased as the sulfide-bearing magma mixed with magma already emplaced in the intrusive body."

"A cornerstone of any successful mining project is an understanding of the mineral assemblage and metal distribution comprising the deposit. Knowledge of the precise mineral/ metal zoning enables an operation to utilize different mining and processing methods optimized for different parts of the deposit. The Lac des Iles mine, located in northwestern Ontario, is one operation that depends on a good understanding of these issues. Current resources for the Roby Zone total 94.1 Mt grading 1.66 g/t Pd, 0.18 g/t Pt, 0.14 g/t Au, 0.062% Cu, and 0.053% Ni.The Roby Zone occurs within the gabbroic portion of the Lac des Iles intrusive complex and consists of three compositionally and texturally different ore types with variable PGE, base and precious metal contents. PGE occur as sulphides and bismuthotellurides in net-textured sulphides, coarse sulphide blebs and as finegrained inclusions within secondary silicates.Knowledge of the precise mineral/metal zoning has directly and indirectly improved several operational aspects, including resource modelling, mining, and processing. For example, metallurgical recoveries have been increased by up to 3% to 5% and concentrate grades have increased by up to 100%. IntroductionLac des Iles Mines Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of North American Palladium Ltd., owns and operates a 3000 t/d open pit mine and concentrate facility, located 100 km north of Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario. The Lac des Iles PGE-gold-copper-nickel mine has been in commercial production since 1993 and in 1997, produced 1.8 million grams of palladium, 127 000 g of platinum, 114 000 g of gold, 438 000 kg of copper and 354 000 kg of nickel (North American Palladium Ltd., 1998).Under the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), a two-year study of the mineralogy of the Roby Zone was undertaken with a goal of improving the profitability of the mine. Geological mapping, petrography and geochemistry of the Roby Zone were completed during this study. Utilization of the detailed mineral/metal zoning identified as part of this study was implemented at the mine and shown to positively impact many operational aspects including mining and processing."

Nova Scotia has been mining and exporting industrial minerals for over two hundred years. As an industrial mineral producer, this province continues to rank as the number one gypsum mining and exporting region in North America. Mining of many other commodities is ongoing, supplying many local and export markets. In all, excluding aggregate producers, there are nineteen industrial mineral producers operating at thirty sites producing nine commodities including anhydrite, barite, clay and shale, dolomite, gypsum, limestone, salt, silica sand and stone (Fig. I). Numerous aggregate producing operations supply all the province's aggregate requirements and export some of these materials to other regions of Atlantic Canada and as far away as Bermuda (Fig. 2) . Production value of industrial mineral commodities in Nova Scotia for 1982 was $105 million , representing 39% of the total value for all mineral production for the year. Because of the general improvement in the economy, indications are that the 1983 value of production will be higher.

A newly developed damage model was used in the study of rock fragmentation mechanisms involved in crater blasting. Simulations show that at the detonation of the explosive charge, a crushed zone around the explosive charge is formed due to compressive failure and then a strong pressure wave is sent out forming a pressurized ring that propagates at the dilatation wave velocity. As the pressurized ring leaves the crushed zone, two tensile stress components perpendicular to the radial stress are developed in response to the action of the radial pressure, causing tensile failure and forming a damage zone around the charge. The formation of this damage zone is quite independent of the depth of the explosive charge provided there is no interference by the reflection from the free face. When the pressurized ring reaches the free face, it is reflected there and causes rock failure on the ground surface that forms another damage zone. Under the simulation conditions, it is revealed that the depth of charge is a factor controlling the relationship between the two damage zones. At a depth smaller than the optimum, the two damage zones coalesce into one and there is excessive rock breakage; otherwise, the two damage zones tend to isolate from each other with the increase in the depth of charge.
