IN the recent monograph on Broken Hill, N.S.W., by E. C. Andrews,* two independent petrological reports appear as Appendices 1 and n, by W. R. Browne and F. L. Stillwell respectively. In these considerable differences of opinion occur. Andrews contributes to some of the questions at issue, but no analytical review of the differences appears in the body of the report. Their development may invite question, and the following notes have been prepared partly in explanation and partly as a summary of some of the divergences. The soope of Browne's report extends over the whole district of Broken Hill, while Stillwell's deals with the rocks within 25 chains of the main lode. The more difficult and important rock-types occur in both areas, raising similar questions. In both cases observations extended beyond the limits of the prescribed areas. Broadly, Browne faces his problem as a study of a series of primary igneous rooks, acid and basio, whioh are intrusive into a series of sillimanite gneisses. The development of the sillimanite gneisses is regarded as belonging to an earlier period than the intrusion of the igneous rooks, while the gneissio structures of the latter are features which are incidental to their orystallization, and are not acquired subsequent to their consolidation. He finally produoes a picture in which his views of igneous injection and differentiation takes a prominent place. One direct result is the claim that three separate periods of metamorphism have oocurred in the Broken Hill area. Stillwell primarily examines the rooks as schists and gneisses since their present dominating features have been acquired during metamorphism. The effort is made to understand suoh differences as might arise from differing conditions of metamorphism upon rocks of similar and different oonstitution. The aim is to divest the rocks of those oharaoters which are due to metamorphism before approaching the questions of intrusive relatio'nships between igneous rocks andsediments.

Detailed investigation was carried out on the dephosphorization of a number of phosphorus-rich manganese or samples of India by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid. Various process parameters like concentration of acid, liquid-solid ratio, temperature of leaching, time of leaching, and particle size of the ore were studied in detail for the three samples of manganese ore from central India, and optimum values were worked out on a laboratory scale. Preliminary studies show that certain ores which are not easily amemlible to appreciable dephosphorization by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid can be made amenable by :roasting to 700-900°C before leaching.

Since 2001, the AMIRA P420 gold processing technology project series has been studying the recovery of gold using gravity devices, with particular emphasis on the centrifugal units, Knelson and Falcon concentrators. The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

The Autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) mill is essentially a short retention time centrifugal mill, designed to effectively harness extraordinarily high concentrations of input energy for efficient particle size reduction. The mill which has an operating duty band extending from primary to ultra-fine also has the unique capacity to generate fine and ultra-fine products from single stage size reductions of either coarse or fine mineral feeds, in both wet or dry operating modes. This paper covers developments following a recent optimisation programme which confirmed that mill shell speed and the velocity differential between the shell and the rotating internal disc assembly tips could be optimised in relation to specific energy for a given feed rate and feed size providing the product size remains constant. Subsequent test-work further demonstrated the versatility of the mill with duties ranging from the removal of surface contamination associated with heavy mineral concentrate particles to the production of premium ultra-fine talc, from a single stage of size reduction. Open circuit grinding of a rougher gravity concentrate to liberate gold ahead of leaching also highlighted the scope for the application of low cost KAD milling for a range of hydrometallurgical feed preparation duties, which involve fine and ultra-fine grinding.CITATION:Kelly, J and Kelsey, C, 2013. The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.

There is a lack of information concerning the movements of water on the continental shelf, particularly with regard to data obtained regularly over significant periods of time. The Horace Lamb Centre for Oceanographic Research has recently deployed data acquisition systems on the sea bed off the coast of South Australia to record tides, swell, and ocean temperatures. Some of these early records are described. The swell data are pertinent to future offshore operations with drilling rigs, barges, and other equipment, while the temperature variations give evidence of significant bottom currents, apart from those due to swell.

Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher Process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher Process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

"The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Simulating the location of clay pods followed by CCS of assay variables is the recommended approach for simulation at the Yandi CID.CITATION:De-Vitry, C, 2013. The demand for iron-ore is ever increasing with the industry directly employing 60 500 people in a range of highly skilled roles in Australia. In the year 2019, the global iron-ore production was 2.85 billion tonnes. It is estimated that each tonne of beneficiated iron ore produces 400 kg of tailings. The IOTs are fine, dense and stable crystalline material mainly composed of iron oxides, alumina and silica. The current and most applied method of iron-ore tailings (IOTs) disposal is using subaqueous disposal of tailings in dams. The footprint generated by a tailings dam is massive and requires constant monitoring due to the possibility of a failure making the operation and maintenance of tailings dam extremely expensive. This review briefly discusses the known causes of tailings dam failures, their impact to the environment and day-to-day human life and potential applications of IOTs. The increase in water content enhances the pressure on dam walls. This in turn increases the liquefaction potential of the tailings and reduces the overall strength of the dam making it more vulnerable to failure. Potential applications of IOTs are in paints, aggregates in construction materials and bricks. The reuse of IOTs reduce waste and generates further revenue facilitating a path towards a sustainable future for the industry.

INVESTIGATIONS IN 1936In 1936 the Industrial Pulmonary Disease Committee of the Medical Research Council investigated both clinically and radiologically a group of fifty workers who had been exposed for a number of years to the inhalation of alumina in the reduction factory of the British Aluminium Company. The results are shown in Table 1.They also considered the sickness records of all the workers (Hill, 1936), as compared with those in other parts of the factory (Table 2).

The Karangahake gold-silver deposit is located 11 km west of Waihi in the southern part of the Hauraki Goldfield. Historically it was the second largest bullion producer in the goldfield with a past production (1882 - 1944) of 126.712 tonnes of gold-silver bullion (Au:Ag ratio of 1:3.3) from 1 142 315 tonnes of ore grading 27.4 g/tonne gold equivalents.

Structures formed during ductile deformation have been reactivated during the later brittle mineralisation process. Two generations of folding are classified as: early recumbent megascopic FI folds and FI shears which transpose the hinge regions, and later upright F2 folds. S1 is folded about F2 folds which contain axial planar S2 crenulation cleavage. Vergence relationships between S1 and bedding indicate that many of the mineralised structures occupy sites of FI folds which have acted as plumbing systems for later gold mineralisation (eg Blackwater mine). The Globe-Progress gold mineralisation is localised by a major jog formed by sinistral strike-slip movement on two FI fault segments and mineralisation also occurs in smaller jogs along strike (eg Sir Francis Drake, Happy Valley-Merrijigs, Cumberland).   The lodes of ribbon quartz which exploit the FI shears and local bedding planes, are inferred to have mostly formed after the peak of metamorphism, possibly related to the emplacement of Carboniferous granites. This was followed by a sequence of vein deposition and wallrock alteration which consists of quartz-As/Fe sulphides ? carbonate - stibnite ¦ trace base metal sulphides and Bi-sulphosalts ? illitic clay/sericite-chlorite. Gold at Globe-Progress is mainly encapsulated in arsenopyrite. At Blackwater, free high fineness gold occurs in partings in lode quartz with late sericite-chlorite. The above sequence of events is comparable to that encountered in many intrusion-related gold systems throughout the Southwest Pacific region. There is a spatial relationship between gold mineralisation and dykes variably described as diabase, dolerite or lamprophyre. Alkaline rocks occur in many Pacific rim and older goldfields and may possibly be related to a magmatic source for gold mineralisation.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

In presenting this address I am conscious of the honour that has been paid me in my election to this important office, and I am very aware that I follow, in the position of President, many distinguished men who have led the Institute over the 70 years since its inauguration in Broken Hill in 1893.It is perhaps appropriate tonight that I intend to talk about a metal which recalls the birth-place of the Institute, and is also one with which I have had a direct association throughout the whole of my working career. This metal is Silver.Silver is associated traditionally in everyone's mind with money and silverware, and has always been prized for its natural beauty and elegance. It is today one of the few metals in which world consumption has outstripped production, and the events which have occurred to bring about this situation make an interesting story.In telling this story, I propose firstly to indicate our development as a silver producing country, give an historical review of the metal, trace its use as currency and the factors influencing its price, and then say something of the old and new uses of silver. Finally I shall give some comments on silver production in Australia today.Australia, with 6-5 per cent of the world's output of silver, ranks sixth among the producer countries and over the years has contributed 892.5 million ounces to the world's supply which, based upon production since the discovery ofAmerica, is estimated to have been 22,150 million ounces or nearly 680,000 tons.Although our production appears relatively small by...

ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

Two remediation strategies have been considered to reduce the levels of acidity and dissolved metals in acid mine drainage discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand. The oxidising strategy involves adding alkalinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) resulting in the precipitation of metallic oxides and decreased acidity. The reducing strategy involves removing DO, resulting in the precipitation of metallic sulfides, followed by addition of alkalinity to decrease acidity. Field remediation trials indicate a reducing system may be more effective for this site than an oxidising system. A residence time of only two hours in the limestone layer of a successive alkalinity producing system (SAPS) is sufficient to reduce acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 71 per cent, aluminium by 59 per cent, nickel by 38 per cent and manganese by 26 per cent. The proposed remediation plan will likely include a series of SAPS, followed by an anoxic limestone drain, and settling ponds to capture any remaining precipitates.

In mining industries, materials loading and handling costs represent a significant component of the total (capital and operation) costs. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading and haulage system with the lowest total cost. The optimal size and number of equipment calculation are very important task for mining engineering because loading and haulage equipment are major proportion of open pit mining cost. Capital and operating cost are considered in objective function with respect to interest rate, insurance and tax in non-linear form. Shovel and truck annual productivity constraint, fleet matching constraint and number of truck per shovel constraint are incorporated in this optimisation problem with continuous variables. This formulation will yield total cost minimisation per hour and good accuracy compared to previous methods.
