The state-owned Swedish company LKAB is one of the world's largest producers of iron ore. LKAB mines the greater part of its ore underground, and very high efficiency is vital if it is to compete successfully with open pit mines. Consequently, computers and OR are essential parts of the company's operations. This paper gives some examples of success- ful computer and OR applications at LKAB, coupled with some remarks on the costs and benefits of OR.

The unique chemical and physical properties that can be displayed by polypropylene and its copolymer derivatives are enabling its development as a truly versatile material for water filtration. Well known applications include spiral wound cartridge filters commonly used for household water or the office drinking fountain, to pressure membranes that provide micro, ultra or nano size filtration barriers, whilst needle-felt or woven cloth filter belts or inline pressure bag cloths are well known to the hydro metallurgist and process engineer. A relatively new filtration concept that is generating interest and applications across all industries including the mining sector involves use of a unique fabric type filtering media made from polypropylene fibres. This technology not only has a vastly wider window for potential applications, it delivers an attractive cost saving alternative to the traditional sand media or diatomaceous earth type filters, along with potential benefits for integrated filtration units. This paper discusses the proven potential of the fabric media technology with examples of performance comparisons and confidence gained from full scale operating installations at mine sites and other locations.

In recently completed road tunnel projects in Queensland, such as the Airport Link and the Clem7 tunnels, there is a smoke duct running along the roof of the carriageways to extract smoke in case of fire. In New South Wales, no road tunnels have a smoke duct. In the Melbourne City Link tunnels, there is a small smoke duct running along the roof. All of the tunnels are safe as claimed by the designers and authorities. However, there is significant cost associated with providing a full size smoke duct compared with no smoke duct. This paper is going to present a comparison of the road tunnel safety with a smoke duct and those without one from a risk perspective. It further discusses the cost-effectiveness of such provisions and whether similar levels of safety could be achieved without a smoke duct.CITATION:Lau, R, 2014. Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Aust- ralia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are begin- ning to experience where industry no longer `calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a `high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to elim- inate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

Among the various methods of thick-seam mining already well-tried in practice longwall caving with extraction of a single slice, as thick as possible, abandoning the top and/or the bottom coal, seems to be the most suitable one for the Australian coal mining industry. The production units of the future should be equipped with heavy double-drum shearer-loaders, wide armoured conveyors, (with one or two central chains) and shield support. Material of this type has been developed for seams up to 6 m thick. Output figures of more than 6,000 tROM/d from a single face can be looked upon as a quite realistic expectation. The problems of co-ordinating such large production units with the whole layout of the mine are discussed. The factors to be taken into account in the planning work and for preven- tion of mine fires caused by spon- taneous combustion are dealt with. For economic reasons the highest possible utilization factor of the very expensive equipment must be aimed at. Furthermore, the seams or parts of seams to be extracted should be carefully selected.

The valuation of exploration properties which contain no identified resources or reserves is the most subjective of all valuation tasks likely to be carried out by a geologist. The geoscience rating method proposed by Kilburn (1990) recognises this inherent subjectivity but also attempts to apply some discipline to the valuation process. Some other methods used for valuations of this type clearly lack discipline and are open to misuse and abuse. The Kilburn method essentially requires the practitioner to justify all aspects of the valuation process. The valuer must specify and, more importantly, quantify aspects which enhance or downgrade the intrinsic value of each property. The intrinsic value is called the ""base acquisition cost"" (BAC) and it represents the average cost to identify, apply for and retain a base unit of area of title. The BAC and base unit of area both vary with different types of exploration and mining title but remain constant for similar types of titles in the same mineral tenure regime. In the Kilburn Method the enhancement/ downgrading factors are determined by the geotechnical prospectivity (Kilburn Method) within the title. A modified version of the Kilburn Method presented here (""Modified Kilburn Method"") also focuses attention on other real variables besides the geotechnical attributes which influence valuations of this type, viz., competition for tenure and activity in the markets in which the exploration properties are being traded. The most active such market at present is the stock market. By utilising uniform BACs and base units of area (for similar titles) for all exploration properties (in practice in Australia this is only possible within a particular State or Territory), the method exposes the valuer's opinions of each of these variables to the scrutiny of the investor. The investor (or his professional adviser) is afforded the opportunity to directly compare valuations on different properties by different practitioners and can assess how the final valuation is weighted in respect of geotechnical prospectivity, competition for tenure, and stock/financial market sentiment. No other method currently employed in Australia to value mineral exploration properties affords the investor this `luxury', which some may argue is their right.

The transportable moisture limit of a mineral concentrate (TML) is of great importance in the shipping of that material from Australian ports. Each year Australian mining companies incur substantial costs as a consequence of delaying shipments and/or multi-handling concentrates so as to comply with transportable moisture limits. Despite this there is a general lack of in-depth knowledge concerning factors that influence the parameter. Eight major Australian mining companies supplied sizing, specific gravity and TML data for their concentrates. Zinc, lead, copper and bulk concentrates were represented in their data. Estimated surface areas of the concentrates, as calculated from their normalised sizing data, correlated strongly with the reported transportable moisture limits. This high correlation prevailed in spite of the acknowledged limitations associated with the use of multi-sourced data and the adoption of simplistic approaches in the normalisation of sizing data and the estimation of surface area. Based on the broad range of concentrates studied, concentrate sizing data were concluded to offer potential as an alternative means of reliably estimating transportable moisture limits.

Edie Creek is located in the Morobe Goldfield about 17km by road from Wau in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Four distinct periods of mining development have occurred since discovery of rich alluvials in 1926. During the two years following discovery, individual expat-riate miners with gangs of native labourers mining rich alluvial gravels dominated the field. After the discov-ery of hardrock mineralisation in 1927, companies accumulated leases and devel-oped extensive underground mines and mechanical processing plants at Day Dawn Mine and Edie Creek/Karuka Mine between 1929 and 1942. After the Second World War, the underground operations were not re-opened, and mining activ-ities mostly concentrated on working alluvial and eluvial deposits. From 1962 onwards, Papua New Guinean miners became increasing producers as company activities declined. In 1990, Edie Creek Mining Company Pty Limited, a joint venture company involving Wau landowner groups commenced operations on New Guinea Goldfield's leases. It currently mines by open pit methods, rich quartz stringers and is invest-igating the open pitting of the Edie Creek/Karuka underground workings.This paper describes the mining and processing techniques employed during the various phases of develop-ment at Edie Creek in the past 70 years. The problems and hardships of operating on a new and remote goldfield are outlined.Abstract

A brief history of the development of pneumatic flotation cells from early in the 20th century to the present day and a comparison to conventional cells demonstrates the efficiency and simplicity of design and operation of the ænew generationÆ of pneumatic cells. Recent successful testwork on phosphate minerals in the USA and a variety of coal types in Australia confirm the utility and efficiency of the design. The key aspects of this technology are improved recovery and selectivity with lower capital expenditure and operating costs.

I would like to start by thanking The AusIMM and CSIRO for organising this excellent conference and inviting me to give a keynote address. Today I will focus on some broad observations of our industry, and leave the technical discussion to my colleagues who are presenting specific papers covering a wide range of topics. In preparation for this paper, I did a little research into the early history of the Pilbara iron ore industry. I was fascinated to read a quote attributed to Harry P Woodward, the Government Geologist in the late 19th century, before Federation. Mr Woodward described the Pilbara as an iron ore country and observed that æthere is enough to supply the whole world should the present sources be worked outÆ. Mr WoodwardÆs prediction could be viewed as wishful thinking and certainly at Hamersley Iron I would gladly envisage the Pilbara supplying the worldÆs entire iron ore needs! In reality, Western Australia accounted for 162 million tonnes or 36 per cent of seaborne trade in 2001. An impressive effort, but not quite the total world supply as Mr Woodward imagined. But we shouldnÆt dismiss these historical musings out of hand û perhaps we could see it as a challenge for the industry to æwork outÆ the present sources. We all know there is abundant iron ore in the Pilbara, and I expect it is only a matter of time until our collective technical expertise and sheer hard work will enable us to utilise its greater range of ore types. Opening up new markets will be a key pathway to creating additional value from the Pilbara ores. Today I will examine the state of play of our industry and the major influences that shape our business at present, before considering what the future might hold for us. I canÆt guarantee the accuracy of my crystal ball, but the stability and long-term nature of our industry does enable some reasonable hypotheses on where we are heading. I will also spend some time examining the way in which the iron ore producers are working to maximise the value of their resource base and obtain more from their existing capital assets.

The VERT project 1993 - 1998 laid the technical foundation for curtailing the emission of fine particles from diesel engines at Swiss underground workplaces. The targeted maximum was 100 ¦g/m3 EC. Extensive laboratory and field investigations demonstrated that this specification is only attainable with modern diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems that almost eliminate particles in the entire lung penetrating size range from 20 nm to 2.5 ¦m. In January 2000, Switzerland mandated compulsory particle filters in underground workplaces, particularly in tunnelling, irrespective of engine age, size and type. After the implementation, the particle concentration in the respiratory air was below 40 ¦g/m3 EC, compared to earlier values of up to 750 ¦g/m3 EC. Deployed DPFs have proven filtration rates of 99 per cent in the entire size range of alveoli intruding particles. The DPFs are as durable as the engine, suffer no ageing and require minimal maintenance. The failure rate is below three per cent annually. Of the 6000 retrofitted construction machines in Switzerland, about 400 are deployed underground. Prerequisites for this quality are a sophisticated certification procedure, electronic monitoring of DPF operation and meticulous periodic exhaust gas inspection of the engines.

The microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of cryptomelane-rich and pyrolusite-rich samples of manganese oxides was studied in repeated five-day static batch cultures over II weeks. Manganous ion was leached/reduced faster from the cryptomelane-rich samples (average 510 mg Mn2+/1/d) than from the pyrolusite samples (average 442 mg Mn2+/1/d).Cultures contained 20 per cent (w/vl) manganese mude, five per cent (w/v) molasses nutrient and the end-of-batch bacterial cell numbers were approximately 1010 cells/ml. The cryplomelane-rich sample incubates became more acid with time than the pyrolusite-rich incubates. The breakdown of pyrolusite proceeds in a relatively uniform way, while cryplomelane indicates a stepwise destabilisation.

Overburden removal, mining and reclamation are now accepted as the basic operational steps involved in the winning of coal by open cut methods. To attain the lowest operational cost, the recontouring and revegetation of spoilpiles must be planned concurrently with the planning of overburden removal and mining. The earthworks associated with reclamation work on spoilpiles often account for 75 - 90 per cent of total reclamation costs. Experience at Callide Mine has shown that the way that spoilpiles are contoured does influence water retention and can reduce erosion from rainfall run-off. However, provided the recontoured slopes meet'Mines Department specifications, the quality of reclamation work is judged not by the quality of the earthworks but by the plant regrowth on the reshaped surface. Thus it is the quality of the revegetation which is of prime importance. For vegetation to be successful, time must be spent on planned research into methods of overcoming plant nutrient deficiencies and selection of suitable grass and tree species. This paper records the observations of faulting in the Black Star mine workings. By classifying the faults into two groups, i.e., strike faults and transverse faults, and by pointing out the differences between the groups and their effects on the silver-lead-zinc orebodies, a time relationship between the two groups of faults and the sulphide mineralisation is suggested.GENERAL GEOLOGY AND MINERALISATIONFolding and faulting are closely related to the mineralisation in the shales by silver-lead-zinc and iron sulphides.Commonly the various sulphides are fine-grained and closely associated with one another. However, exceptions do occur locally, where massive coarse galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and to a lesser extent chalcopyrite, have been observed singly or closely associated one with the other.In the main, the sulphide mineralisation forming the orebodies occurs as replacement of, and infilling along, the sheared bedding planes of the finely bedded shale host rock.The shales in general strike north-south with an average dip to 60° to the west; strong shearing along the bedding planes is evidenced by much slickensiding and slaty cleavage.Sequences of finely bedded shales of varying stratigraphic thicknesses alternate with very. massive beds, and it is in the more highly sheared thinner beds that the greatest concentration of sulphides occurs. The unmineraIised massive beds of shale, 11 in. up to 12 in. in thickness, occur singly or in groups between, and to a lesser extent. within, the orebodies. The massive beds resisted sulphide replacement and impart to the orebodies a most prominent banded structure.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. Numerical modelling is extensively used in civil and mining engineering applications because of cost and risk problems associated with different experimental studies. In this study, the effect of resin thickness was evaluated in bolt-grout-concrete interaction and bending behaviour of a fully grouted bolt installed across joints in post failure region. Tests were conducted in 20 and 40 MPa concretes, and modelling simulations were made, using ANSYS version 8.1, to include both with and without different pretension loads. It was found that in all resin thickness, both the strength of the concrete and bolt pretension had major influences on the shear resistance and shear displacement of the reinforced medium. Also it was found that the strength of the surrounding concrete is more important than that of the grout thickness in both the shear resistance and shear displacement when the bolt is pretensioned.

It is now 32 years since Walsh's classic publication (1) heralded the beginning of atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AA) as we know it today. During this time, AA has developed into the most widely used analytical techniques for the determination of the metallic elements. The years have seen progressive changes in instrumentation so that today it is a highly sophisticated technique. One area of development in AA that is experiencing renewed attention is in the area of electrothermal excitation. In this technique a flame is not used by the analyte solution is atomised by an electrically heated graphite furnace. For a large number of elements the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GFAA) is considerably more sensitive than flame work. It is common to be able to detect concentrations one hundred times smaller than those possible by flame. Today's geochemists are finding that they can gain valuable information out of very low limits of detection. Electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry (or GFAA) allows for low limits of detection and can be seen to be a valuable aid to geochemical prospecting Analysis.

Gold mineralisation at the Penjom gold deposit in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia is hosted in structurally-controlled quartz-carbonate veins that display a variable degree of overprinting events under a ductile-brittle regime. Mineralised veins are categorised into two main types: shear and extension veins. Shear veins are interpreted as forming during the fold and thrust episode (D2 event) along the bedding and the Penjom Thrust ore zone. The shear veins are associated with discordant extension veins. In addition, NE- to NNE-trending splays and Penjom-Thrust-parallel reverse-dextral and locally NNW to N–S reverse-sinistral faults overprint earlier vein events, forming a new episode of extensional veins during the D3 event. This is mostly at the fault contacts of intrusives, either as shallow-dipping or vertical-sheeted stockwork or brecciated veins. At least two episodes of faulting comprising D4-D5 are evident, which postdates the main episodes of veining and mineralisation. This is indicated by a series of late episode N–S-trending sinistral and oblique to normal faults that transect and displace the Penjom Thrust and the folded footwall sequence at low angles, and are interpreted to be responsible for intensive vein deformation along the Penjom Thrust and displacement of the orebody. Structural interpretations of mineralised veins suggest that the veins were formed under a compressional to transpressional regime, with later post-vein displacement in a transtensional to extensional regime. Vein formation in response to deformation observed at Penjom reflects regional structural deformation within the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia and specifically along the Bentong-Raub Suture zone.CITATION:Endut, Z, Ng, T F, Abdul Aziz, J H and Teh, G H, 2015. It is important to understand skarn-porphyry transitions in order to use exposed skarns to look for associated and potentially larger porphyries. For such purposes, a good start is to understand the transition between porphyry and skarn in known deposits. In this contribution, we report the transition at Antamina, Peru, where skarns occur in and around a Miocene complex comprised of more than seven porphyritic intrusions. There are three types of skarn-porphyry relationships. The earliest intrusive phase, P1A, contains both endoskarn and porphyry-style quartz veins with secondary biotite halos. The porphyry quartz veins and endoskarns formed at the same time. Locally, the intrusion contains only endoskarn without porphyry quartz veins and is surrounded by exoskarns in carbonate wall rocks. In the third scenario, later porphyry (P2) intruding into P1A porphyry and skarns related to P1A contains abundant granular quartz veins and secondary biotite alteration but does not have significant endoskarn. The granular quartz veins also extend into earlier P1A skarns. The scarcity of endoskarn associated with P2 is related to the supply of Ca. The earliest P1A intrusion intruded into carbonates that supplied abundant Ca, therefore both endoskarns and exoskarns formed. In contrast, where the wall rocks of the later P2 intrusion are P1A or skarn related to P1A, there was little free Ca, therefore only porphyry-style quartz veins formed.CITATION:Chang, Z, Mrozek, S A, Meinert, L D and Windle, S, 2015.
