The history of the physical chemistry of steelmaking is reviewed through international conferences, and compared with the Japanese contribution. Subjects remaining to be solved are discussed. Several steelmaking technologies developed recently in Japan are surveyed.

The electrolytic zinc plant at Port Pirie South Australia, was designed and constructed to treat zinc oxide fume recovered by treatment of lead blast furnace slag in two fuming furnaces, The plant was commissioned in late 1967. The equipment installed and the oper- ating procedures adopted,'are described in some detail.

In this paper, an approach is proposed to monitor the rate of lump coal based on image processing. Using this method, we effectively improve rate of lump coal on comprehensive mechanised coal face.

An experimental study of the influence of surface active agents on the dewatering of fine coal was undertaken with a view to evaluating the usefulness of such materials in reducing the residual moisture contents of filter cakes. Experimental evidence is presented which suggests that while polymeric fiocculants have a beneficial effect on settling, they can have adverse effects on the filtration of the thickened underflow. Detergent addition, on the other hand, was shown to reduce filter cake moisture, and the magnitude of this effect was determined, in part, by the prevailing electrochemical equilibrium at the solid-solution interface.

A review of the current pit design procedures and their performance has been undertaken recently by Mining Research Associates (MRA) and the CSIRO Division of Geomechanics. Visits were made to mines covering a wide range of operations. A questionnaire was completed by each mine in order to collate the relevant information. Interviews were also made with representatives of the Mines Departments to ascertain their role in regulating mine designs. Design expectations were compared with field performance, and reasons for variations noted. Problems associated with designs were identified and suggested methods of alleviating the problems have been made.

Activity of FeO in the ternary system MgO-FeO-CaO in contact with metallic iron has been measured at 1000 K employing the cell.PtIFe, (Mg, Fe, Ca)OIZr02 - CaOIFe, FeOlPt. Adsorption tests have been carried out to elucidate the interaction mechanism between dextrin and sulphide minerals. Sulphides such as galena and heazlewoodite exhibit high affinity adsorption over the pH range that coincides with the iep of lead and nickel hydroxides, and is suggestive of chemical interaction. The adsorption behaviour with respect to the sulphides of copper is of the low affinity type, and follows a different pattern. The adsorption studies on graphite, support the chemical interaction mechanism, with the metallic impurities serving as adsorption centres. In conformity with the proposed mechanism selective separation of galena from chalcopyrite and heazlewoodite from chalcocite has been Achieved.

The rnunber of Cenozoic volcanoes which has already been found in China surpasses 600. An ancient Chinese tourist, Xu Xiake (1587-1641 in the Ming Dynasty), mentioned in his travel notes the volcanoes and hot 'springs in Tengchong, a country of the Yunnan Province, 400 years ago. In 1927, the geologist, Yun Zhanli, expounded generally on the recent volcano distribution in China. In the '70's, China not only accomplished aerial photography and produced topographic and geological naps covering the whole country, but also obtained a new understanding of the geographic distribution and process of development of the Cenozoic volcanoes through Landsat imagery; interpretation and ground verification, together with C14 isotope dating and analysis of volcanic rocks.

Criteria for the selection of team members, and the role played by the project manager in this selection, are discussed. The processes most likely to be adopted for beneficiating ores or concentrator streams containing a large proportion of particles finer than 10 um are froth flotation, selective flocculation, wet magnetic separation and selective leaching. Flotation will be made more efficient for very fine particles if ways can be found to selectively flocculate the valuable mineral beforehand (floc-flotation), to produce smaller bubbles and to reduce entrainment of ultrafine gangue. Schemes for selective flocculation have proved difficult to implement because of the delicate balance between surface forces (electrostatic, dispersion, hydrophobic) and hydrodynamic forces, that determines flocculation, and the changes which occur to particle surfaces through hydrolysis, oxidation-reduction and cross-contamination between minerals in aqueous suspensions. The search for a better understanding of selective adsorption of flotation collectors and flocculants continues and will be particularly important for the practical success of selective flocculation and selective magnetic coating.

Acid mine drainage is an unavoidable consequence of some coal mining operations. Typically runoff pH is below 3.5 and at these pH levels heavy metals are mobilised. Leachate from coal reject dumps may require collection and treatment to raise the pH and precipitate the metals before being discharged.A bi-product of coal mining operations at Clarence Colliery is coarse washery reject. At present the coarse reject is deposited above ground and rehabilitated. Adjacent to Clarence Colliery is the Kable's Transport Pty Ltd sand mining operation. It has been proposed that co-disposal of the rejects from both operations may produce a product whose leachate has near neutral pH.

Portland cement is a finely ground mineral powder obtained by intergrinding a mixture of 95 parts of clinker and five parts of gypsum. It is the generic name for hydraulic cement a man made product which hardens in the presence of water. Today's cement started formally with a patent granted in 1824 to Joseph Aspdin, a Leeds bricklayer. He called his patented cement 'Portland' because it resembled a gray brown stone quarried on the Isle of Portland off the coast of England. The first cement to be made in the southern hemisphere is accredited to Nathaniel Wilson, a pioneer farmer who with his brother John began experimenting in 1874 with the limestone on their property near Warkworth. In 1884 they produced the first Portland Cement to be made in this part of the world.
