The Antarctic Peninsula consists of accretion complex sedimentary and volcanic rocks, talc-alkaline magmatic are rocks, marginal basin sediments and extension-related alkali basalts, dominantly of Mesozoic to Cenozoic age. Metallic minerals have been recorded at "250 localities but two thirds of these are innocuous occurrences of Fe+Cu accessory minerals. The remaining -70 localities are related to hydrothermal mineralization processes. Metallogenetic associations identified are: vein and breccia-hosted Fe+Cu+Zn+Pb+Mo or Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn, shear-hosted Fe+Cu, volcanogenic Fe+Cu and pegmatite-hosted Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn. Anomalous Au, Ag, As, W and Sb also occur but are not of economic interest. Metallogenic zoning is unproven and genetic models are uncertain, possibly involving volcanogenic, epithermal to hypothermal vein and porphyry-type systems. Substantial field and laboratory studies are required to understand distribution and Genesis.

A positive displacement pump is being dev eloped for pipeline transportation of coking coal to a -50 mm export specification, at a con- centration and velocity which will allow trans- portation in the plug flow region, minimising degradation of the particle structure, and pipe= line friction losses which will be lower than with turbulent or laminar flow. Pump operation is by hydraulic powered free pistons in a rota- ting cylinder block, with cylinders overlapped by stationary inlet and discharge ports in a water lubricated and sealed rotary valve. Before this development coking coal was not considered suitable for transportation in slurry form, for the valves in the double act- ing duplex piston pumps used for slurry pipe- lines, cannot be divorced from the slurry and require that the solid material must be reduced to a fines'consistency before introduction into the pump suction. The hydraulic transportation of 10 million tonnes of -50 mm coking coal, 50 km from the Bargo area west of the escarpment to an offshore shiploader at Port Kembla is feasible. Study shows that economic factors alone would dictate that the development of a pumping system for long distance transportation of coking coal is necessary. A case-study is presented of the tailings dam of Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd., at Brukunga, South Australia. The methods of-construction and operation of the dam are outlined over the whole working life of the mine. Procedures of soil mechanics used to estimate the stability 'of the face of the dam are described, and seepage problems are dis- cussed. It is concluded that the dam is basically stable, and enabled Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. to dispose of tailings economically, although more attention to seepage control may have been ad- vantageous. Suggestions are made on the construction and operation of tailings dams elsewhere.

The Emperor gold deposit occurs on the western margin of a 5 Ma caldera in a large, mafic shoshonitic shield volcano on the island of Viti Levu, Fiji. Products from two major pulses of post-caldera intermediate volcanism filled the caldera. Caldera collapse-related steep and flat faults and zones of shattered rock provided per- meable conduits for vertical and lateral fluid migration and favourable sites for ore deposition. One large hydrothermal system, operating concurr- ently with extrusion of the second pulse of resurgent volcanism, may have produced porphyry- style alteration within the caldera, epithermal mineralization at Vatukoula, and weakly minera- lized, siliceous veins and breccias in an outflow zone northeast of Vatukoula.

AXTAT is a computerised system developed by the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy in conjunction with the local mining industry for recording and retrieving information about fatalities and work related injuries. Since its inception, the system has gained considerable recognition by consistently demonstrating its usefulness as a tool, not only to the Department, but for the entire industry nationwide. AXTAT has played an important role in the continuous improvement process in management of occupational health and safety in the Western Australian mining industry with gains in both human and financial terms, by regularly providing timely and accurate statistical feedback on fatalities and lost time injuries to industry.

This paper documents the relationship between material handling and processing costs compared to blasting cost. The old adage, 'The cheapest crushing is done in the pit', appears accurate in this case study. Comparison of the accumulated cost of powder, selected wear materials and electricity, indicate a strong, inverse correlation with powder factor (lbs powder/long ton of rock). In this case, the increased powder cost is more than offset by electrical savings alone. Measurable, overall costs decline while shovel and crusher productivity rise by about five per cent when powder factor rises by 15 per cent. These trends were previously masked by the effects of weather, ore grade fluctuations and accounting practices.

For many years the mining industry at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, was carried on with just sufficient attention to underground ventilation and hygiene conditions as to keep pace with necessity. However, the campaign against industrial diseases in other mining centres (notably South Africa) some years ago, brought the subject more prominently before local mining engineers.Throughout a period of several years, gradual improvement has been effected, and at the present time industrial hygiene is considered an essential part of the production operations of the various companies.In June, 1918, a move was first made by the Board of Trade advising an inquiry respecting the health of employees engaged in the metalliferous mining industry in the State of New South Wales. At the end of that year, a recommendation was made to the State Government by the Board of Trade that a Techni.cal Commission of Inquiry be appointed to examine and report upon the dust conditions of the metalliferous mines at Broken Hill. Following this a second report presented in 1919 made specific recommendations in respect to the scope of such a Commission. A Technical Commission of Inquiry was accordingly appointed and arrived in Broken Hill to inquire into the prevalence of miner's phthisis and pneumonoconiosis in the mines. Early in March, 1920, the examination of all mine employees commenced, and the work was completed in June, 1920. A 328 m, 2.4 m diameter raise-bored shaft has been equipped with a modular ladderway system to provide a second means of egress from Aberfoyle's Hellyer Mine in Tasmania. The modular ladderway consists of platforms, ladders and service pipes assembled at the surface and progressively lowered down the shaft. This system provides a rapid, safe and economical non-entry approach to equipping a shaft. The modular construction and single suspension allows for future extension or for reuse in another shaft.

Flash flotation is a process that is included in many new mineral processing plants as part of the grinding circuit. Some of the valuable minerals can often be liberated at coarse sizes and will remain in the recirculating loads of the mill until they are reground small enough to report to the cyclone overflow. In addition, minerals of high density report to the cyclone underflow despite being fine in size. This can lead to overgrinding and makes the recovery of valuable fines by flotation difficult. Flash flotation is used to remove the readily floated coarse particles as early as possible and can therefore prevent overgrinding. It thus has the added potential to improve materials handling of the concentrates in such processes as filtration. The merits of including flash flotation within an integrated comminution-conventional flotation circuit is not easy to determine experimentally. Simple batch flotation tests are unable to provide any measure of the possible or probable improvements that are likely to occur from this circuit configuration. As a consequence expensive pilot plant programs are resorted to, to provide the information that will justify the inclusion of flash flotation into a comminution-flotation circuit. Those who have been involved in such pilot plant programs will know of the difficulty in stabilising the circuit as well as selecting the appropriate operating parameters (eg amount of concentrate to be removed in both the flash flotation and conventional flotation circuits). The interactive nature of this circuit (grinding, classification and flotation) is the root cause of these difficulties. Computer simulation, based on information derived from laboratory batch test work or plant and laboratory data, offers an alternative means by which an initial assessment of the merits of a flash flotation circuit can be determined. It can also provide the basis and focus for pilot plant testwork. Recently MacKinnon, Yan and Dunne (2003) developed a model that allows the performance of a flash flotation to be obtained within a closed circuit grinding operation. This paper provides details of an extension of this model to incorporate the interaction of flash flotation on the downstream conventional flotation circuit and allows æwhat ifÆ scenarios to be explored. Details of the laboratory batch test work methodology and the pertinent data derived from these tests that are used in the models and simulation are provided.

The Miwah prospect lies on the dilational 070¦ trending Miwah Lineament near its intersection with northerly oriented fractures within Pliocene volcanic rocks exposed between a NW trending segment of the dextral transcurrent Sumatra Fault, and the more northerly trending Samalanga-Sipopok Fault to the east. These faults reflect the continued interaction between stresses from the India-Australia plate located to the southwest, and spreading within the Andaman Sea to the north of Sumatra. A system of deep seated faults is believed to have facilitated emplacement of post-Miocene magmas and Quaternary volcanic centres at shallow crustal levels throughout northern Sumatra.

For many years it was realised that the methods used for unloading concentrates at Port Pirie were inefficient and labour intensive, therefore, when a decision was reached to standardise the east-west rail link from Sydney to Perth, the opportunity was taken to consider entirely new schemes for the handling of concentrates at Broken Hill and Port Pirie. After considerable testing and investigation, it was decided to install a completely new concentrates handling plant incorporating a tippler at Port Pirieòto replace the previous long established methods of unloading and dis- tributing concentrates to the operating plant.and the shipping berths. To achieve this, wagons of concentrates from the various mines are marshalled in a set order at Broken Hill and conveyed to Port Pirie in 56-wagon trains. On arrival at Port Pirie, the wagons are checked and moved to a position where they come under the control of the automatic wagon marshalling equipment.

The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

Host-rock - wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

PACMANUS is an actively-forming seafloor analogue of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide orebodies, situated on the crest of an andesite-dacite-rhyodacite ridge overlying rifted older arc crust in a back-arc basin. Hydrothermal deposits range from Mn-oxide crusts to Cu-Zn-rich massive sulfide mounds and chimneys containing significant Au and Ag. Preliminary data suggest a substantial magmatic component to fluids and metal sources, and we speculate that PACMANUS is the cap to a complete hydrothermal system including subvolcanic and intrusive-related mineralisation.

A process for eliminating nickel from electrolytic zinc plant solutions by precipita- tion with dimethylglyoxime (DMG) was developed to enable the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) to treat nickel-bearing zinc dust precipitates. These precipitates are leached to recover their Cd and Zn content. The final Zn bearing solutions contain relatively high Ni concentra- tions (20-100 mg/1) and are treated with DMG and then neutralized to pH 4.6-4.8. The pre- cipitate is filtered off and the solution returned to circuit. DMG consumption is about 200% of theo- retical requirement, and Ni removal is 80% complete overall.

A sample of crude copper powder produced by the CLEAR Process was refined by dissolution and recovery in sulfate media using the Parker Process. The Parker Process offers an alternative method of copper recovery to electrorefining and allows a range of Eh and pH conditions to be used to provide further discrimination of impurities. High purity copper powder was recovered by the Parker Process even in the presence of added impurities when the Eh and pH was maintained near constant throughout the refining step.

Optimisation of capital in the development process is critical to the profitability of any new mining venture. The process of optimisation should apply to all aspects, that is the financing, management, revenue, reporting and, of course, the development of the project. Unfortunately, too much emphasis has been placed on the optimisation of the financing or reporting aspects and too little on the project itself. This paper addresses the latter.

Gold Fields Ghana Ltd (GF Ghana) currently operates an underground mine at Tarkwa, in south--west Ghana. The mine was operated by Tarkwa Goldfields Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the State Gold Mining Corporation of Ghana (SGMC). The mine was making operating losses and in a poor state of repair. Tarkwa Goldfields retrenched all the staff and GF Ghana assumed management responsibility for its own account on I July 1993.

The establishment of vegetation onto open cut mine spoil is dependant on the nature of the soil and rock strata of the overburden. Experience has shown that in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland the nature of the minespoil changes considerably as subsequent and deeper mining strips intercept changing rock strata. The different mixes of strata at the surface of reshaped spoilpiles can produce variable response in the sown vegetation cover. It is usual that land features of mine sites are known in detail and are depicted on mine or locality maps. Subsurface strata and lithology descriptions are available and are used for planning of open cut mining operations. Surface and subsurface data can also be used to estimate the intrinsic nature of overburden through the use of fence diagrams. Lithology at points along a mined strip can be obtained and used to describe overburden. Indications are that correlations exist between salinity of overburden components and the response of vegetation. The developed procedure thus becomes a useful tool for the prediction of revegetation Practices.
