Melbourne Water (MW) is responsible for a section of existing gravity trunk sewer servicing the Melbourne central business district, Docklands, Port Melbourne and other adjacent areas, known as the Melbourne Main Sewer (MMS). MW has determined that the 2.2 km long 110 year old sewer will not adequately service these areas into the future or provide the level of reliability needed. The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement project (MMSR) involves the replacement of the MMS with a new gravity sewer main and six key manhole shafts, known as the Melbourne Main Reliever (MMR).The majority of the MMR sewer tunnel is situated south of the Yarra River and will be constructed using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will be lined with precast concrete segments. The tunnel will be 2.4 m internal diameter and will have a 1.8 m diameter glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) sewer pipe positioned within it. This project represents the first large-scale, modern, mechanised tunnel project in MelbourneÆs Yarra Delta Quaternary sediments. There is little precedence known to the authors of similar scale tunnelling projects in these particular geological units. During the recent detailed investigation and design stages of the project, significant effort has been spent on characterising the geotechnical conditions along the alignment and predicting the effects of the new tunnel on the existing environment. Some of the key design issues that have been identified and managed through the design process include short-term surface settlement due to tunnel excavation and the predicted effects on surface infrastructure, potential spalling of the steel fibre reinforced concrete segments under full TBM ram loads and tunnel lining design in geological units with highly variable stiffness.Construction of the new MMR sewer tunnel is expected to commence in mid-2008 with a capital cost of approximately $160 million. Sewer system commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2012.

Many minerals processing plants need to have greater efficiency in current times and optimise their process performance in order to maintain high profitability. This is even more so in the current economic climate. In the case of large flotation cells, such as TankCell«-300 with over 300 m3 active capacity, ensuring consistent operation and optimal flotation conditions is particularly critical, given the high impact on overall process and throughput of such cells. As there are fewer cells to control and monitor, there is also a lower initial capital cost for instrumentation - the requirements, however, are higher. Despite such compelling reasons, instrumentation and basic control in flotation cells has not changed much in recent years. The standard is still to use traditional feedback (PI algorithm) controls for slurry level and flotation air. A new advanced instrumentation and control package for large flotation cells has recently been developed by Outotec and has been installed at Macraes.In addition to the standard basic instrumentation and control, the new system at Macraes consists of a froth image analysis system, a froth velocity control, and a level control system which utilises adaptive feedforward compensation. There are three TankCell«-300 cells in operation at Macraes since November 2007 and the new control system was commissioned in December 2007.The paper will include comparative data from pre- and postsystem installation and discusses benefits including optimised recovery, improved performance, as well as ease of operation.

The, Ore-bodies.-The ore-bodies of the North mine, North Broken Hill Ltd.; consist of two lenses, connected by a narrow neck of mineralized country. They pitch at an angle of 40° in an easterly direction and dip north at 60° to the horizontal. The southern ore-body, on a horizontal plane, has a total maximum length of 800 feet and in one place attains a width of 230 feet, whilst the northern orebody has a maximum'length of 600 feet and a maximum width of 80 feet.

Drilling and blasting practices at Groote Eylandt are undergoing a period of rapid change. Practices over the last ten years are reviewed and some specific blasting problems currently being faced are described. A move from percussion to rotary drilling is outlined, together with the reasoning behind a proposed return to ANFO from watergel explosives. A brief outline of the various firing patterns used is given, together with a description of the drilling and blasting recording procedures currently in use. Current and planned developments in drilling and blasting at Groote Eylandt are also outlined, emphasizing the success of wide patterns, fired in line with long inter-row delays.

Structural arrangement, loads and design methods of the major temporary and permanent works are briefly described for the main station and entrance works. In Australia 'there are hidden deposits of gold, copper, tin, lead and zinc which can be found by drilling at reasonable expense in view of the imp9rtance of the objectives. Exploration of the prospects in mind would mean about a million feet of drilling. The purpose of this paper is to outline, in a technical way, some of the geological thinking that has been given to this matter. To do this, it is necessary to unify the wider ranging thoughts into some sort of coherent perspective and also into some sort of logical sequence. This will be done by treating first the geological subject material which is in fact, at the foundation of the exploratory scheme. With this base, the argument will be continued through a sequence of prospect thinking and brought to a conclusion in regard to the practical employment of geology in the drilling planning. In this knitting together of ideas, the discussion will be given substance by welding into the argument the reasoning that has been applied to the Cobar prospect. The New Occidental Gold-Mines are operating three mines at Cobar, and the writer is indebted to the Company for allowing the reference to be made. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) is a management company, formed in 1989, to manage the assets and operate the Kalgoorlie joint venture for the owner companies Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Limited (GMK) and Homestake Gold of Australia Limited (HGAL). Mining is still in progress on the 'Golden Mile' and surrounding areas more than 100 years after Paddy Hannan's discovery adjacent to the active Mt Charlotte mine. From 1893 until 30 June 1995 the Kalgoorlie Goldfields has produced approximately 45 million ounces (-1400 tonnes) of gold from mining and treating about 179 million tonnes of ore. This paper describes four new families of collector products which are currently being introduced at the industrial level. A brief summary of the chemical basis behind each product family will be given. This is then followed by a selection of flotation examples which illustrate the more important use characteristics that have been observed to date. The Mount Morgan massive sulphide body occurs in a volcanic sequence of Lower or Middle. Devonian age, which is subdivided in the mine into "Upper mine porphyries", "Banded mine sequence", and "Lower mine porphyries". This sequence is intruded by latite, Mount Morgan Tonalite (360 million years), and late Permian dykes. Distribution of macroscopic ore textures and minerals in the orebody are discussed and evidence is presented indicating the pre-Tonalite, Devonian age of the orebody.

Roller seed screens were installed at The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (B.H.P.) Whyalla pellet plant to replace vibrating screens on the green ball circuits. The installation of roller screens was justified by improving the sizing of the green balls. This improved sizing increased the yield of fired pellets produced from green balls thus decreasing the fuel consumption. The fired pellet sizing was improved also. This paper discusses the configuration of the roller screens installed at Whyalla, quality of green balls produced, advantages of roller screens compared with vibrating screens and future development of roller Screens.

The number and severity of sulphide dust explosions in underground metalliferous mines have increased in recent years, despite various methods used to prevent or inhibit them. A dust explosion occurs when a cloud of combust- ible dust in an oxidizing atmosphere is exposed to an ignition source with sufficient energy to ignite the dust. A computer blast simulator model was used to investigate the movement of the fractured rock, temperatures and volumes of the explosion gases in a 70 m high, 24 m wide open stope.

The original leases making up today's North Kalgurli Mines were developed by independent companies on an ad hoc basis. The major disadvantage which now arises is the varying levels of mining horizons. From Kalgurli Shaft in the south, through main Shaft and to Croesus Shaft in the north, there are three separate sets of levels. work has commenced to link the three areas with either common levels or new development which will facilitate common access and haulage via Main Shaft.Generally, the workings at North Kalgurli were established at the turn of the century. The introduction of techniques and equipment to bring the mine into the 20th Century has been difficult and slow. The general size of openings, a widespread workforce and complex ore distribution often make innovation and change more than a challenge.

The approaches to simulation and the techniques to carry it out are discussed in detail covering drying and firing for the straight grate process. Utah's Blackwater mine began operations in 1967. The four CQCA mines controlled by Utah followed over the period 1971 to 1979. Project feasibility studies for all these were based on open cut mining to overburden depths of 60 metres, with typical project lives of 12 to 16 years, depending on reserves Further studies, initiated after the mines had started, showed that continuation of open cut mining beyond the 60 metre highwall was viable. In 1973, the Deep Stripping Project (DSP) was launched to define the scope for stripping deeper, to determine what the additional equipment needs might be, and to pu forward proposals for a full scale trial system. The project commenced at grass roots with a literature survey, proceeded through a sequence of equipment evaluation, specification, design and manufacture to the commissioning of the Goonyella BWE system. Studies are continuing to assess the future deep stripping requirements for all Utah's Bowen Basin mines.

This paper reviews the role of fill in mining including consolidated fill both histor- ically and currently as determined by a recent survey of the Fill Subcommittee of the Canadian Advisory Committee on Rock Mechanics (CACRM). It covers the application of fill in modern min- ing methods including mechanized cut and fill, undercut and fill, post pillar cut and fill and longhole pillar recovery between stabilized fill. An automated fill preparation plant and recent developments in rotary drilling of hydraulic fill conducting holes are described briefly. The paper also summarizes the findings of some of the important laboratory and field work carried out on the behaviour of fill in Canada, the United States and Australia and again draws on current information obtained from the Fill Subcommittee of the CACRM. Space limitations and unavailability of suitable material prohi- bit the summary of similar information from other countries.

Many heap and dump leaching processes involve competitive, complementary and sequential reactions between multiple minerals and reagents. A comprehensive model has been developed to deal with these complex chemical interactions which is based on diffusion control of the reaction rates. All of the mineralogical and chemical data are obtained from representative samples of the ore or the chemical literature. These properties have been incorporated in a general way, making the model applicable to a range of ore-process systems. The simulation is used to predict the absolute reaction rates and can be used before any leach tests are carried out on the ore itself. The applicability of the model and some tests of its validity are presented.

Dewatering of solutions is one of the most significant requirements of the resources industry, as practically all mining endeavours use water in their process for leaching, extraction, cooling, dilution or for potable drinking water.

Recently there has been increased recognition o'f the cost savings that can be achieved by the greater use of offsite preassembly for the construction of industrial plants. Preassembly is a method of construction which involves considerable offsite assembly of complete sections of an industrial plant in established fabrication shops. The preassemblies are transported to the plant site, often by large and oversize transport systems where they are set on prepared foundations, finished and interconnected to other sections of the plant as required. The concept of preassembly is not new, but widespread interest has been shown because site construction costs in all parts of the world have increased rapidly and often at a greater rate than in established fabrication areas. Particular interest has be focused on remote, isolated and inhospitable plant site locations. These areas require the import of skilled labour, the payment of high labour rate premiums and the development of infrastructure to support the workforce for the duration of the construction period.
