Maps of mineral grade used to assess mineral reserves are most commonly generated using one of the many estimation methods available such as inverse distance weighting or ordinary kriging. Most such maps incorporate a degree of spatial smoothing which is an integral part of the averaging process. In deposits with highly variable grade which include many gold deposits, this smoothing can mask the detailed geometry of the mineralization at the economic cutoff grades being considered. In underground mining, a knowledge of this geometry is important in the choice of mining method and thus in the assessment of the minable reserves.The method of conditional simulation in geostatistics can be used to generate maps of grade which reflect the actual spatial variability of grade as measured through the variograms of the drill hole data. Simulated maps can provide a number of equiprobable images of the mineralization geometry from which a more appropriate mining model of the mineralization can be developed. Multiple simulations can also be used to assess the uncertainty existing in the current knowledge of the reserves.

The Northland Peninsula of northern North Island, New Zealand contains a complex and diverse record of volcanism which reflects rapid tectonic changes during the late Cenozoic. The main volcanic associations observed on the peninsula are late Cretaceous- early oceanic crust obducted onto Northland at the end of the Oligocene, Miocene arc-type rocks and Pliocene-Quaternary intraplate basalts. This sucession of volcanic successions can be related to tectonic convergence developing into subduction and followed by a an environment of tectonic tension. While the volcanic activity is ultimately linked to specific tectonic regimes, because of rapid change magmatism was decoupled from the specific tectonic event. This decoupling of magmatism and tectonism appears to be a feature of the zones of plate interaction in the southwest Pacific region.

The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located approximately 520 km north-northwest of Adelaide, South Australia (Figure 1) was discovered in 1975 by Western Mining Corporation. A joint venture to facilitate development of the deposit was formed in mid-1979 between WMC (51 per cent) and the British Petroleum Group (BP, 49 per cent). Production commenced in 1988, and current annual output from the mining and treatment of 2.2 Mt of ore is approximately 65 000 t of refined copper and 1400 t of uranium oxide. Significant amounts of refined gold and silver are also produced.

My forebears migrated to South Australia in the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s. All of them were literate but, because they moved about South Australia looking for work, family papers have become scat- tered and I am left with a few fragments. Some years ago I was intrigued to find among my fath- er's books a frontispiece in an old Anglican Book of Lessons. As can be seen Joseph, a mining smith, was also a Freemason. Thus my interest was aroused. I know some- thing of modern day mining communities in South Australia and wondered what they were like 100 or more years ago.

Three aspects of rock mechanics, namely, in-situ stress estimation by acoustic emission (AE) method, strength of rock mass and role of chemicals to reduce the strength are covered. It is possible to detect the previously applied maximum stress by stressing a rock specimen to the point where there is a substantial increase in AE activity. This is known as Kaiser effect. From the AE signatures in the second and subsequent loadings, AE take-off point was identified more easily than in the first loading. In determining the compressive strength of rock mass, two factors have to be considered, namely, the size effect on the compressive strength of intact rock and the effect of discontinuities on the compressive strength of rock mass. Although a modified Bieniawski criterion gives best agreement with the triaxial test data, modifications have been suggested to Hoek-Brown criterion due to its popularity. It is possible to reduce the tensile strength of sandstone by saturating it with weak chemical solutions made with dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, polyethylene oxide and aluminium chloride by up to 30%. In the case of compressive strength, there is no appreciable effect. The possible explanation is that the chemical solutions produce an effect on the strength of sandstone only when the failure mechanism is dominated by tensile mode.

The technical limits for high-pressure transport of large particle solids by means of sludge pumps, piston pumps or the like lead to the development of the pipe-feeder system. The pipe-feeder is a type of pressure lock in which the high-pressure pump itself is not in contact with the solids. Simultaneous operation of the three chambers with corresponding control of the valves allows continuous flow in both the primary and secondary circuits. Initially the pipe-feeder was used only for the transport of solids. Today it also operates with great success in central mine cooling systems, serving as an alternative for high-pressure/low-pressure heat exchangers or Pelton systems. In addition to the technology applied up to now, the pipe-feeder is also capable of transporting ice slurry, thus increasing cooling output consider- Ably.

The nickel ores mined in New Caledonia for one century are mainly silicate ores. These ores are nickel enriched saprolites, formed by partial weathering of peridotites (predominantly harzburgites and some dunites), serpentinised to varying degrees. Saprolites constitute the lower horizon of lateritic soils, sometimes up to 100 metres thick, developed on peneplains now greatly modified by erosion. Saprolites are generally overlain by laterites, a more weathered horizon, where the main components are iron oxy-hydroxides with a low nickel grade. The structure of saprolites depends essentially on the serpentine content of peridotites and, on the other hand, serpentine minerals may have a high nickel content and, so, represent important nickel bearing minerals in silicate ores. Two types of serpentines can be found in nickel ores from New Caledonia: ò primary serpentines, formed by hydration of olivine at temperatures below 400¦C, during overthrusting of peridotites in late-Eocene (Paris, Andreieff and Coudray, 1979), are generally very abundant; ò secondary nickeliferous serpentines, associated with other sheet silicates in garnierites, are now relatively scarce but garnierites were selectively mined one century ago, because of their high nickel grade.

A small-charge rock excavation method based upon the Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) technique has been demonstrated to be capable of excavating the hardest of rocks. The PCF technique involves drilling shallow holes in the rock which are then pressurised at the bottom by a propellant charge device. A controlled fracture is initiated at the hole bottom comer and propagates in such a manner as to excavate the rock at an energy efficiency three to five times better than explosives. Due to the low flyrock velocities and airblast pressures realised with PCF breakage, the method may be used in close proximity to equipment and personnel and is thus ideally suited for integration into continuous hard rock excavation systems. Over the past 18 months full-scale testing of the PCF method has been carried out in mines in the US and Australia. This testing has utilised a 76 mm diameter gas injector for hole pressurisation and employed propellant charges ranging from 80 to 320 gm. In addition to extensive data on rock excavation performance, data on ground motion, dust, carbon monoxide and air blast have been obtained. These data indicate that none of the parameters associated with PCF breakage are detrimental to the development of PCF-based, continuous-excavation machines. Machines employing the PCF method may range from simple single-boom machines for secondary breakage and small precision-blasting jobs to integrated systems with several booms, continuous mucking capabilities and ground-support equipment for drifting and tunnelling.

A liquid phase sintering (LPS) process for preparing basket anodes from nickel powder has been scaled-up and the innuence of compact green density and sulphur content, as well as sintering conditions (period and syngas now.rate) on the perfonnance of anodes has been evaluated. The product anodes have been tested in an industrial electroplating tank. It is concluded that if anode residues are to be minimised, then with a sintering temperature of 960"C, compact green density needs to be as high as economically achievable (85 - 87 per cent density of solid nickel) and the sintering period approximately 40 minutes. With these constraints, if residual sulphur contents of anodes are to be kept as low as those of commercial anodes, then the sulphur content of the green compacts would need to be less than 1670 ppm. At the same time, it is also found that residual sulphur concentrations as high as 2000 ppm are beneficial to anode pcrfonnancc and not detrimental to the quality of the electroplate. The ability of the LPS process to produce marketable nickel anodes for the electroplating industry is clearly demonstrated.

Future hard rock mining will gradually move towards complete mechanisation which lends itself to remote control and ultimately to robotic mining. This will require different technical inputs into mining engineering and one of these is in the area of rock'mechanics. Traditional hard rock mining has had little rock mechanics input. Problems arising from high stresses and poor ground conditions have in most cases be remedied after they occurred, in the worst case by abandoning a particular stope or area and starting elsewhere. In a fully mechanised remote or robotic mining situation the financial penalty for such an approach could be severe, as a major part of the production costs will be in the development and the equipment. It is therefore imperative that a complete rock mechanics feasibility study is undertaken before an area is set up for robot mining and that a continuous stability monitoring system is installed that will predict rock behaviour well in advance of mining, such that the necessary ground control measures can be implemented without impeding the continuity of mining. This system will utilise already existing instrumentation such as extensometers and stress cells, and possibly additional improved instrumentation which has to be developed for this particular Application.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. The CIP process for gold recovery has enjoyed widespread application in most gold-producing countries. The development of a mathematical model of the CIP process has value for use in process design, process optimisation, and process control. Mathematical model development through laboratory experimentation is an important step in the design and optimisation of the CIP process. For this purpose, data has been generated through small scale laboratory leaching and adsorption tests both in batch and continuous mode. This test program has been carried out on specific ores of various types prior to the application of the models to production CIP plants utilising these ores. The applicability of leaching models derived from batch experiments was tested in a continuous five stage CIP pilot plant. The models were then adapted to scale-up the batch to the small scale continuous operation.

The Auscoke project has reached-a stage where a pilot plant nominally able to produce 100 t.p.d. of coked briquettes is being brought on stream during Nov. 1971 . The targets for this stage of the project are to establish the technological and economic value of Auscoke for the iron blast furnace, and to verify the commercial feasibility of large scale plants. The project originated at the B.H.P. Central Research Laboratories (C.R.L.) and work to date has shown that using a two stage contin- uous process, strong large coke can be produced at good productivities from medium or low volatile poorly caking coals. General features of the pilot plant and processing are discussed.

The Hartley layered mafic igneous complex within the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe contains economically-recoverable quantities of platinum group metals and gold, nickel, copper and cobalt. The recoverable metals are concentrated in a thin gently-dipping stratigraphic unit - the Main Sulphide Zone. The Hartley Platinum mine, jointly owned by BHP and Delta Gold NL, is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 1996 at an initial mining rate of 2.16 million tonnes per annum and will produce approximately 150 000 oz of platinum and 3300 tonnes per annum of nickel, as well as saleable amounts of palladium (110 000 oz), rhodium (11 500 oz) and copper (2232 tonnes).

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. Typical rehabilitation programmes for spoil piles and waste dumps in open cut coal mines involve the spreading of topsoil to assist vegetation growth. In the early years of rehabilitation before a protective vegetation cover has been established, this topsoil is susceptible to erosion during rainfall events. Since the long term success of rehabil- itation procedures is sensitive to adequate topsoil maintenance and since, on many mine sites, topsoil is a scarce resource, erosion losses of topsoil (particularly once fert- ilised) can severely restrict rehabilitation Measures.

The originally estimated mine life at Kidston (starting 1984) was 12 years. Through a continuing process of re-evaluation and improvement in the operation and by expanding the geological knowledge in the region, the mine life has been considerably extended. With falling grades and harder ore, the additional reserves have come with increasing risk - not only in an economic sense associated with diminishing profit margins but also operationally, requiring innovative milling technology and geotechnical designs to provide a lower cost environment for continued profitable mine production.
